Keeping the consumer first in mind is something that has always been obvious and has been delivered by the likes of the tech wizards and creative types in the gaming and movie worlds, where their work is approved, accepted, and fanatically enjoyed by many millions of happy consumers. In the property world, however, such devotion and focus on that end consumer has mostly been sadly lacking. The tenant. The resident. They often find themselves way down the list of priorities behind profits and planning designs. But what if you could take those consumer-focused tech teams and get them to produce software that would benefit residents in new residential schemes in ways never before imagined? That's where today's guest Jeremy Heath-Smith comes in. Former creator of the global sensation in the gaming and movie worlds - Tomb Raider - and now founder and CEO of Spike Global, the UK's leading resident engagement and property management software provider. Jeremy shares the fascinating story of how the incredible transformation of Battersea Power Station brought him and his team into the world of property. Jeremy gives a live demonstration during the show, of how Spike Global's software portal and messaging platform has transformed the engagement, integration, communication, and happiness and well-being enjoyed by the residents in that and other housing schemes in the UK. See and hear about how developers can completely change their game when it comes to delivering for the end-customers: the landlords, the property managers, the residents, the tenants. Listen to Jeremy talk about how his team's systems performed in ways they never imagined when the global pandemic swept across the landscape. Efficiencies in building management, and control of logistics and operations within a scheme, yes. But more than that. Building and evolving thriving communities. Making people feel connected and supported. Enriching the lives of users and communities by creating better places to live and work...

The champagne is flowing freely today for Michelle now that she has survived the ‘Summer from Hell', and Suzanne is celebrating her recent victory as well. One thing they're not exactly celebrating, however, is how travelling post-COVID-19 is a different experience from what it used to be in the past. In today's episode, our hosts have more than a few things to say about the new flying experience and what it means for air passengers. The episode starts with Suzanne picking up from the last episode and talking about how she won the candle contest on Instagram. Then, she moves on to the theme of the day's podcast and discusses how flying is now an uncomfortable experience for her, including her experiences with flights being delayed or canceled at airports. She also relates her difficulties with car rental services, and problems related to obtaining food on flights. Together, Michelle and Suzanne explore how employee shortage hurts flight operations at airports. Finally, the episode ends on a positive note, with Michelle giving a shout-out to her daughter-in-law for taking on the Orange Juice Optional Instagram page. Episode Highlights Michelle and Suzanne's reasons for celebrating COVID-19 protocols air passengers are expected to follow Suzanne's difficulties while traveling by air Vaccination, employee shortages, and their impact on the flying experience The upcoming Orange Juice Optional Instagram page Quotes ‘‘And my point at that point was, if you're getting on a plane, and passengers have become unruly, and it's like, I wonder if that's because the airlines have made it so uncomfortable for us to travel, that our frustration levels are at their peak.'' “But instead of trying to get to where we were, how to recreate a positive environment that we can all peacefully live in without feeling this angst and this stress, and this frustration, wherever we go, the judgment.'' “It's like I am on a campaign now to find the positive ways to deal with life in general.'' Suzanne's candle contest is drawing to a close – in fact, it will be over by the time this episode airs – but she has taken time out of routinely checking the voting updates on Instagram to join Michelle for today's episode about fall – the favorite season of at least one of our hosts. In their wide ranging discussion here today, they share their perspectives on autumn and explore some facts about the season that prove to be as interesting as they are entertaining. The episode begins with an update on the candle contest followed by the autumn personality quiz, Michelle's feelings about the fall season, leaves, and Suzanne's pumpkin spice cookies. Suzanne goes on to review her love for autumn colors like yellow, brown, and orange, and together she and Michelle talk about the places which they would like to visit in the fall. Love it or hate it, fall is a fact of life – one which our hosts shine the spotlight on in today's fun and fascinating episode. Episode Highlights Suzanne's candle contest update How Michelle and Suzanne feel about fall Michelle and Suzanne's fall quiz results Things that Michelle and Suzanne love to do in the fall season Quotes ‘‘I love seeing different leaf colors. I love to feel the crispiness in the air, like when I breathe in to take it in and it feels so crisp and fresh.'' “But I like how the skies look when it's fall. Like, there's a lot of drama in the skies, the clouds.” “In fall, there just needs to be an eeriness in the air, just a little bit of mystery.'' ‘‘Fall colours are my favourite colours. Michelle and Suzanne certainly are no strangers to this condition, and today they focus their trademark entertaining and informative spotlight on some of their more stressful situations in life as well as some techniques that can be used to beat stress. In today's episode, Suzanne starts by discussing a candle slogan contest she is participating in on Instagram. Then, the conversation shifts to the topic of stress, an evil that makes people feel overwhelmed in certain situations. After discussing stressful experiences related to airport protocols and passengers, Michelle and Suzanne explore stress management, techniques to combat stress, and how unconventional stress reduction techniques like sparking joy for other people can also help them uplift their moods. Finally, the episode ends with Michelle committing to implement the stress reduction techniques next week, an excellent example for all of us to follow. Also just breathe, just breathe.'' “And a lot of times when I close my eyes like that, I will listen for sounds and I have always found this fascinating that when you really listen to sound, you don't just hear one level of sound. You can usually hear different sounds all at the same time.'' “And the best, best, best way for me is if I take a walk. It's like, for whatever reason, it clears my brain, it makes me feel better.'' “When you turn, try to turn someone's day around just by giving them a nice comment, just by making them feel better.'' After doing a quick check on what kind of mood they're in, and reviewing just how overwhelming Michelle's move is at the moment, our hosts pick up where they left off at the end of the previous episode to explore the world of ‘life hacks'. Realizing that sometimes we all can get so used to performing actions in a specific way, today Suzanne and Michelle share with listeners some of the life hacks – those pieces of information that make your life simpler - that they have adopted over the years which have worked for them and might just work for you as well. Beginning with Michelle's embarrassing moment of realization that water boils faster with the lid on, they go on to look at hacks that can be used in the kitchen and share their experiences of applying some specific life hacks. They finish up by discussing the hack that involves taking a photo of a car in the parking lot to remember its location. Whether or not you have heard these tips before, today's episode is as entertaining as it is informative – definitely one you do not want to miss. Episode Highlights An update on Michelle's move Life hacks related to alcohol and the kitchen Hacks that help cure medical problems Hacks related to everyday household objects Quotes ‘‘I probably missed a lot when I was writing my list down as well, for that very reason. Because there are things that you just do over and over again, that you forget is a life hack.'' ‘‘Okay, so you, if you have boiling water with no lid on it, and you want to keep the water from boiling over, you put a wooden spoon across the top of it.'' ‘‘But again, for me, it was really hard because, you know, you integrate them into your everyday life, and they don't feel like hacks anymore, but they could really save somebody else some time.'' With fingers crossed that their mic issues are in the past, Suzanne and Michelle are back today to talk about one of the side effects that technology holds for them – procrastination. But it's not just technology that inspires this delay of completing tasks in their lives, and in today's episode they take a deeper look at why and how it shows up for them, much of which will undoubtedly ring true for listeners as well. They begin by exploring some surprises in Suzanne's life and the reason why she dislikes them so much, and then they move on to discuss the times when they themselves have procrastinated. They also examine why the need to procrastinate arises in the first place, and throw light upon how procrastination can be viewed as a positive activity. To finish up, Michelle and Suzanne take the procrastination quiz and determine which type of a procrastinator they are, based on the five different types outlined. There's no surprise that today's episode is yet another thoroughly entertaining one, and listeners will come away so very pleased that our hosts didn't put this one off. Episode Highlights: Suzanne and surprises Procrastinating before having important conversations How Michelle and Suzanne procrastinate in different situations Why they procrastinate The five types of procrastinators Quotes: ‘‘Like, if I have to have a really uncomfortable conversation with somebody, or share some news, or have a talk that I'm not looking forward to, I will procrastinate. I do not want to step into that feeling of I'm disappointing someone. I don't want to step into that feeling of being mad at me, perhaps.'' “There's always that element of surprise in a conversation that you've planned to have, especially uncomfortable conversations. Even when you try to anticipate their responses, there's always that element of surprise.'' “So, I guess what I'm trying to say is when it comes to having a timeline in place, or a deadline in place, I am very good at not procrastinating because I don't like to put myself in a state of chaos, like this move every step of the way.'' “So, people might procrastinate because they feel anxious about something, like they're not going to be able to do it well enough, or it's too much on their plate or there's no interest.'' In moments of frustration or truly poor customer service, sometimes you've just got to slip into “Karen Mode” to stand your ground. Suzanne kicks off today's episode with an absolutely aggravating story about a recent experience she had while visiting Las Vegas for a home product show, and reflects with Michelle about why middle-aged men are not labelled a “Karen” when they ask to speak to the manager. As they contemplate this double standard, Michelle then shares her hilarious story about a makeshift Louis Vuitton dog leash, and the puzzling feedback she's received from buyers in the very stressful process of selling her home. Michelle and Suzanne touch on today's topic, procrastination, and discuss the pros and cons of being a mental listmaker versus writing things down. They chat about the sense of accomplishment that comes with getting things off your plate, which brings them to a most amusing conversation about work dinners, exaggerated stories, and experiencing FOMO when they miss out on events with one another. Of course, they have much more to say about procrastination as well, but they'll get to it next time! Episode Highlights: Suzanne's recent “Karen” moment at a hotel in Las Vegas Michelle's hilarious makeshift Louis Vuitton dog leash and the stress and frustration of selling her house Procrastination, To-Do Lists, and the sense of accomplishment you get when checking things off Exaggerating stories for the sake of the story without going too far Being supportive partners at their husbands' work dinners and missing each other when one cannot make it Quotes: “Are we dealing with a little bit of a double standard here? Because all of a sudden, middle-aged white female women are ‘Karens' when they create a scene about something that is somewhat justified. But this older gentleman, who is tossing around names and tossing around his importance in life, and demanding a table right now is not getting a ‘Karen' label.” “Experiences in selling a house... I know it will sell when the time is right. It's a beautiful home. It's just having patience. And we all know that is not a strong suit of mine.” “It's such a great feeling, when you can get it off your plate. When you actually take care of something, you accomplish it. It's done. And it's off your plate. No more procrastination.” “Exaggerating stories once they get too far exaggerated is a huge pet peeve of mine, because I'm sitting there going, It didn't happen like that.” “It's great having a person like that in your life, who makes you feel like they want you there.” “Of course, procrastination - we have a lot to say on that. But yes, we procrastinate until next time.” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! Modern Home: Why Hello! Modern Home Why Hello! Time was, many top interior designers sought to conjure a perfectly seamless décor—whether it be all Louis XV furniture, all early American, or all modern. The results could be beautiful—but also somewhat boring, and certainly impersonal. Interior decorator Thomas Jayne suggests another way to put together the spaces we live in: by using creative combinations of striking art and objects from across time to derive a style that's endlessly evocative, livable, and fresh. In this episode, Ben Miller gets the goods from Jayne on the history of interiors (from the Greeks to the present day); what to budget first; and the spirit of “democratic decoration,” that, historically, has animated American interiors.
In getting her house ready to be sold, Michelle is going through a lot of her belongings and trying to decide what needs to stay and what needs to go. As she engages in this process, she's finding, as many of us do, that the memories arising are making her feel quite nostalgic, reminding her of different moments in the lives of herself and her family. As a result, this week's episode is all about the sense of nostalgia that virtually all of us experience at some point in our own lives as well. Today, Michelle and Suzanne begin by catching up on some news such as Michelle's two new ‘hellions', Suzanne's swimming history, and the board game, ‘Really Karen?” From there, they go on to explore what makes them and their family members nostalgic as, together, they take a trip down memory lane, recalling such items from the past as certificates, jerseys, dragons, and Power Rangers. They also discuss how deciding to put an old object in the trash or keeping it safe is a difficult decision, and finish up by reviewing how our good and bad memories make us who we are today. Rest assured, today's episode is yet another one which will bring you joy, and which will be remembered fondly for a very long time. With all of the frustration that technology has introduced into their lives, Michelle's been looking for a topic to discuss with Suzanne today that is benign enough to calm everything down for a bit. Given that the Tokyo Games are running right now, the Olympics and sports in general seem to fit the bill perfectly. This week, she and Suzanne start by sharing some of their technological woes, before going on to discuss the Olympic Games, including the athletes who participate in them and the performance anxiety they go through, and the impact of COVID-19 on their experience at this year's Games. They also discuss the sports they like and play, as well as their flexibility and athletic build, and, as is their habit, head off into such tangents as picky eaters. As always, you just never know what exactly you're going to get when these two best friends get together, but you always know you're going to enjoy the ride. Episode Highlights: Michelle and Suzanne's frustration with technology Their memories of watching athletes participate in the Olympics Athletes and performance anxiety COVID-19 and its impact on athletes' experience of The Olympics Michelle and Suzanne's experiences playing sports Some ‘tangent things' Quotes: “But there's actually a thing that they refer to when you kind of lose your train of thought, in the middle of your routine. And she said that's what's happened to her, is her mind and her body connecting.'' “Because in anything you do, you have to be mentally strong and prepared.'' “So, I think there's a lot of pressure, especially in the Olympics on individual athletes, especially on the ones that are favored to win the gold because they get so much media attention, which you kind of have to blame the media, you kind of have to tell the media back off, you know, let these kids perform, because most of them are just kids.'' “If you have the passion for it, you could be really good at it if you have the skill, right?” “To be perfectly honest, tangent things are more interesting to me than the Olympics.” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! In this episode, I share about how modern home fires are very different today than they were in the past. The materials and supples used in construction to make homes less expensive, easier to install and quicker to build can come with hazards. There are chemicals that might be released during a fire and the strength is just not their in flooring materials used today. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/matt-warren8/message
It's been a crazy few weeks for Michelle and Suzanne, and it's shaping up to be a crazy summer as well. They haven't even had the opportunity to talk much lately, so today's episode is a chance for them to catch up with each other and for listeners to catch up on everything our hosts have been up to right along with them. Beginning with an update on Suzanne's refrigerator and Michelle's experience helping her son move to Colorado, they go on to discuss how complimenting strangers can make them feel good. The episode then concludes with Suzanne sharing her experiences at her niece's wedding in Alaska. The crazier things get, the more we all need an opportunity to take a breath and catch up with good friends, something that we all get to enjoy here today. Episode Highlights: Suzanne's refrigerator update Helping Colton move Suzanne and Michelle's families, weddings, and tasks at home How complimenting strangers is a good thing to do Michelle and Suzanne's plans for the future Quotes: “The moral of the story is…telling people nice things that make them feel good, makes me feel good.'' “But I'm going to start doing it more because I think the conversation was now that we can see people's faces and see how they react. And we can see them smile or engage with us to say something nice to them or about what they're wearing or, you know, a compliment is really nice thing.'' “I realized on that trip that I do need to step back a little, that he'll live how he wants to live. And I just hope at some point that it moves from, you know, college life to professional life, which it will.” “That's all I want, you know, at the end of the day, one, for any of them, is to be happy and safe and successful in their life with the people and what they choose to do, whatever they choose to do.'' In today's podcast, Michelle and Suzanne continue their discussion about friendships from last week, picking right up where they left off (after a brief discussion about bear and moose encounters). Once again, through their own example they clearly demonstrate that good friends are like rare gems and that those who find them are truly blessed. They begin by sharing some stories about bear and moose encounters, and then resume their conversation about friend groups by looking at the difficulties a new member of a group faces while trying to fit in with other members. Together, they go on to discuss topics like ghosting friends, divorcing a friend, the evolution of a friendship, and how the dynamics of a friendship can change due to situations like disagreements. Our hosts bring this episode to a fitting close by celebrating their friendship and just how thankful they are to have each other in their lives - something that all listeners of the podcast can be truly thankful for as well. Episode Highlights: Some stories of bear and moose encounters How every group of friends is different How changing locations can affect friendships Personal struggles with keeping friends Ghosting in a friendship and the importance of closure Things that lead to the evolution of a friendship Quotes ‘‘So, you bring up an interesting point, meeting new people is always a challenge just because, you know, personalities and stuff and the time you have to invest in starting from that new place, obviously.'' “But in my heart, my friend is my friend. You don't that just that, you just can't flip that switch off.'' ‘‘Because when somebody causes hurt, or something happens that causes a change in the relationship, it gets wrinkled, and it can't ever go back to that perfect state.'' ‘‘I think that realistically, even if the friendship evolves and becomes stronger, it takes a lot for me to let my guard down once it's up.'' Given the busy days Michelle and Suzanne have ahead of them, and to give their livers a break as well, it's a champagne optional day today. Recent events in both their lives have brought the topic of criticism to the forefront, and form the basis for today's episode. Drawing upon their own experiences, they have a lot to say about so many aspects of this topic, many of which will be very familiar, some that may just surprise you, and all of which will definitely get you thinking. Michelle starts things off by sharing some of her wedding ‘crunch time' items, and then she provides both a definition of criticism and the categories that she applies within it. She and Suzanne go on to look at the various forms that criticism takes, the problems with it, some of their own experiences with it and how they accept it. They finish up by exploring who has the right to criticize, shadow work, and self-criticism. Filled with insights that only experience can provide, our hosts engage in an enlightening examination of this universal topic of criticism, and offer some valuable food for thought for all listeners here today. Episode Highlights: Wedding ‘crunch time' items The definition of criticism Michelle's categories of criticism Constructive criticism and feedback Problems with criticism Cyber bullying How Michelle and Suzanne accept criticism Some of their experiences with criticism Getting blindsided by criticism Taking criticism as an asset Who has the right to criticize you? Shadow work Self-criticism Quotes: “We have to have a police officer present for that time of the reception.” “I feel like a bitch on wheels this week.” “It could be an upgrade from Texas wine to, I don't know, box wine.” “To say that it's constructive criticism is somehow justifying your right to criticize, and I don't necessarily agree with that.” “Sweat pants, alcohol, and kids always tell the truth.” “Never send a drunk or an angry email.” “That was such bullshit criticism, right?” “It's a dangerous approach to use anger as our vehicle to improve things.” “To sit back behind a computer screen, not wanting to be part of the action, but criticizing what everybody does, you're not helping the problem. You're just inciting more discontent.” “I am now 50 years older than that, and I still remember that it's the first thing of criticism that I remember.” “Take criticism as an asset instead of an insult.” “Let it go, Suzanne, let it go.” “I am probably the queen of criticism. I probably criticize people more than anyone else.” “What good purpose does that serve?” “I do have a critic in my life, and she's a nasty little bitch.” “Too much criticism from a good friend turns into ‘I don't want to be around that person anymore.' ” “I think that's an incredibly challenging thing to have to do is go to that employer and say, ‘Here's what I think you're doing wrong' or ‘Here's my opinion of you.' ” “Don't be so hard on yourself, accept who you are and what you do as good.” “I kind of blissfully go through life thinking everything I do is the right thing to do.” “I have very few regrets in my life… I really feel pretty good about myself.” “I can be such a bitch, I'm just saying.” “God, why did I do that? Michelle has some big news to share today regarding a ‘middle age move’ she and Robb are undertaking, and Suzanne is ready with valuable advice to help them through it all. Choosing to downsize their residence in Alaska means that Michelle and Robb will be getting their current home ready to sell, and preparing a smaller space to move into. Happily, Suzanne’s interior design experience and knowledge will help them, as well as all those listening, to do it the best way possible. Michelle begins by describing the upcoming transition, bringing up memories of garage sales and Chuck E. Cheese, and Suzanne then begins to demonstrate her expertise in interior design. She offers advice on choosing paint colors, getting a house ready to sell or move into, and how to combine spaces and work with contractors and industry standards. As you will hear, Suzanne has a great deal of passion and advice to offer in this area, which means that we can all look forward to yet another episode on this topic sometime in the future where she can share it all. Episode Highlights: Michelle’s middle age move Garage sales and Chuck E. Cheese Suzanne’s design tips Choosing paint colors Getting a house ready to sell Getting a house ready to move into Combining a guest space with an office Working with contractors and industry standards Quotes: “The house holds so many memories, and it holds so much crap, also.” “Well there are 10,000 creams out there and picking the right one can make or break it.” “It's called Pavillion Beige, and it's an overall perfect beige, and it's a Sherwin Williams paint. And no matter where you put it, you will love it.” “You don't want them to zoom in on wedding pictures or pictures of children or what kind of dishes you own, or...your tastes and furniture - you’ve got to get rid of all that stuff and make it feel very neutral.” “Everything that can be cleaned should be cleaned spotlessly.” “I think anything you can do to make it feel like a home without making it feel too personal is a good idea.” “I want somebody to be able to create new memories there with their family.” “Do not live with someone else's carpet.” “What fit perfectly in your big house is not going to work in a smaller scale home.” “You need to learn the personality of the townhome and furnish it accordingly.” “You might save 1000 bucks buying something cheap today, but in the long run, you're going to spend 10 times that replacing the cheap sofa that you buy.” “Animals are the hardest possible thing on an area rug or on carpet...invest in the highest quality you can, because it's going to be a lot easier to maintain it and keep it looking nice.” “I am feeling like I have jumped into the deep end of a pool, and I'm going to drown without help.” “I'll just throw it out there to the universe and say, ‘Cheers, everyone’.” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! Suzanne’s had a bit of a sleepless night, but Michelle’s fully rested and ready to take on the topic of middle age, or as she prefers to call it, middle adulthood, in today’s episode. Originally intended to review the more positive side of this time in life, our hosts, as usual, look at all sides of the topic, adding in a number of their own experiences, both hilarious and touching. They begin today by tending to some unfinished business from their previous episode, namely sharing their favorite Seinfeld episode, before beginning their exploration of middle age. When they first noticed it setting in, the age they consider it to be, and some of its negative and positive attributes form much of this exploration along with examples from their own lives. They finish up by highlighting the importance of a ‘carpe diem’ attitude, and some pieces of valuable advice which they received from their parents. In yet another episode that runs the gamut from lighthearted to deeply thoughtful, Michelle and Suzanne again bring their unique perspective to bear on a fact of life to which everyone can relate. Episode Highlights: Their favorite Seinfeld episode When they noticed middle age setting in The age they consider to be middle age Some negative and positive attributes of middle age Carpe diem The valuable advice their parents have shared with them Quotes: “Just that word ‘middle age’, it just conjures up such a negative image in my mind.” “Middle age is not pretty.” “I’m dangerously close to considering myself old.” “Somewhere along the way, I became not so young anymore.” “When did I become the oldest woman at the table instead of the youngest at the table?” “Look at you getting all positive and reflective on us here.” “It's like, ‘Oh my God, what is this?’” “Older women clothes are much more comfortable than Ann Taylor ever was.” “I would go into the old women's section to buy for my mom at that time. And look at me now. Now…they know me by name.” “I also have a very false sense of how good looking I am, and how fit I am. And, remember, my mind tells me I'm still 24.” “I had blissfully gone through life, not knowing about underarm flap, not looking for it, and I found it when someone pointed it out to me.” “As a middle aged woman, I don't really care about what other people think of me.” “We have to enjoy life now because we're not guaranteed old age.” “In middle age and middle adulthood, we actually get to that point where we become the ones who share our wisdom and our experiences with our kids, and hopefully can make a difference in their life.” “It was a tough day, but now we're proud AARP people.” “Stop calling me out.” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! It’s been a day of frustration for both Michelle and Suzanne, so the orange juice is completely optional for this episode. To provide an uptick to their day, they have chosen to follow the example of one of their favorite TV shows (especially for Suzanne), Seinfeld, and host an episode about nothing. As you will quickly discover, however, any conversation between these two best friends always results in some entertaining and profound moments for themselves and their listeners, and today is no exception. They start off by describing the reasons behind their frustrating days, the notion of making this a Seinfeld-esque episode, some Star Wars trivia, and the definition of ‘making dinner’. They also venture into what it means to babysit, Aunt Susie’s Rules, grandkids and Disneyland, Mother’s Day and their own experiences as children and mothers, and some of the dumbest things they did as teenagers. Born out of frustration and with a plan to be about nothing, this episode is anything but, as it celebrates the ease and warmth of a conversation between great friends and the variety in both lightness and depth that can be found there. Episode Highlights: Michelle and Suzanne’s frustrating days Seinfeld Star Wars trivia Making dinner Babysitting Aunt Susie’s Rules (ASR) Grandkids and Disneyland Mother’s Day, moms, and children The dumbest things they did as teenagers Quotes: “Some days that's what you need to do is just bitch about it.” “Give me a fucking break, you idiot!” “That guy needed a Xanax, and now you need one.” “While you were releasing to the universe, you made me laugh.” “You're in charge of the kids. Therefore, you are babysitting.” “I think it's an aunt's place or a grandparent's place to spoil those children.” “You were only thrown out by the Disney police once. It's not like it happens every single time you go in there.” “If I have to go to Disneyland, they better remember it.” “You will be the grumpiest grandma there.” “I think I lied through my teeth to my parents about what I was doing.” “I don't see you ever doing anything stupid.” “I got in so much trouble for that one.” “At that point, it was the drunkest I had ever been.” “It's a miracle no one was killed that day… and looking back on it, I am totally horrified by it.” “That's a direct shot at me.” “Were you too drunk to remember winning it?” “She had strict rules and we were all the better for it.” “I think God gives us the children we're meant to have, and we raise them because God knows how we're going to raise them.” “God never gave me more than I could handle.” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! It’s just orange juice and coffee for Michelle and Suzanne today as they recover from their weekend making joyful memories together with friends in Tucson. Given that, it makes perfect sense that the topic they have chosen to explore this week is the concept of ‘sparking joy’ – what it means, examples from their lives of what does and doesn’t spark joy for them, and how to make a conscious effort to find joy in daily life. They start off by reviewing their weekend and what Michelle learned and observed during it, and then delve into their experiences with Marie Kondo’s exercise in sparking joy. Along the way, they share their own examples of what does and doesn’t spark joy for them, illustrate these with their trademark entertaining stories, and highlight the need to build joy into daily life and get rid of whatever doesn’t bring it. Fittingly, they finish up the episode by defining the joyful exclamation ‘Skol!’. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that joy is an essential component in our lives, and our hosts’ words of wisdom and humor certainly provide that spark for listeners here today. Episode Highlights: Michelle and Suzanne’s recent weekend together and what Michelle learned during it Their experience with Marie Kondo’s exercise in sparking joy Some examples of what sparks joy in their lives Some shopping stories Trusting your instincts Some joyful memories Building activities that spark joy into every day Getting rid of aspects in life that don’t spark joy Practicing self-awareness The meaning of Skol Quotes: “I found it so fascinating trying to watch those two guys get a word in edgewise. They were struggling.” “I knew I could share it with Suzanne and she would be on my side - but you weren't.” “Are we doing a little role reversal here where you're becoming kinder and gentler, and I'm getting more of an edge to me?” “It's a stress release for me to go shopping. It always has been my entire life.” “I did probably get rid of fifty percent of my closet.” “I heard it saying to me, ‘Give me one more chance’.” “I've been wearing pajamas for a year.” “Whatever I have on, in and of itself, should make me feel good about myself.” “I think Spanx should all be burned.” “In my quest to spark joy in my life I did get rid of every empty box I found.” “I will never cut corners on my packaging.” “This is truly turning out to be the most superficial podcast we've ever done.” “I always wanted to wallpaper my wall with my shopping bags.” “I don't consider myself a visual person either, I really go with that feeling…and when I get that feeling, I know it’s right.” “It's all about being present also in that moment and actually letting yourself completely relax into it and remember everything going on around you.” “I want to find joy in the small things.” “I never thought you were a bitchy little Karen.” “Skol!” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! Fresh from an eventful weekend with Suzanne, it’s orange juice only today for Michelle as she gives her liver a rest, and together she and Suzanne delve into a topic which arose in last week’s podcast. The notion of ‘pulling a Karen’ was a new one for Michelle last week, so she has since done some research on just what the criteria for a Karen are, and today she and Suzanne offer their perspectives on Karens, and explore the possibility that one of them might meet these criteria. Before they get into the main topic, though, Michelle shares a couple of scary experiences she has had, one of which just happened recently, and then she and Suzanne review their safety plans for potentially dangerous situations. They also discuss March Madness Pools, COVID vaccinations and ‘vaxholes’, the universality of COVID, and Suzanne’s experience with an anti-mask demonstrator while she was visiting Michelle. Finally, they dive into the Karen criteria, Suzanne’s perspective on them and on being considered one, her results from a couple online ‘Karen’ quizzes, and some concluding thoughts regarding the Karen approach to life. If you’ve ever wondered about what it means to be a Karen, today’s entertaining episode is the one for you! As Michelle explains, it’s been a shitty day for her, so you know that the orange juice is truly optional for this week’s episode. Luckily for us, that doesn’t stop her and Suzanne from putting together another entertaining episode for us all to enjoy, and this time around they are looking at the concept of ‘random acts of kindness’ and the impact they make in our world. Michelle begins by sharing the reason for her rotten day, and then goes on to explain her love of what she calls synchronicities in our world that then leads her into the topic of National Random Acts of Kindness Day. She provides some examples from her own life which support the idea that ‘no good deed goes unpunished’, and then she and Suzanne explore the state of their ‘crowns’, Suzanne’s favorite quotes about kindness, and Robb’s acts of kindness. They finish by discussing the random acts of kindness which others have done for them, the feeling that comes with performing such acts, respecting people’s feelings about COVID protection, and the true meaning of kindness. What starts out as a shitty day for Michelle evolves into a most heartwarming and humorous episode whose sincere message is one that we can all take to heart as it inspires us all to ‘do something kind every single day’. Important Events February 15, 1842 Today is the anniversary of the death of the Scottish surgeon, botanist, and naturalist Archibald Menzies. The famous story about Archibald goes something like this: Once, Joseph Banks sent Archibald on an expedition. At some point, Archibald ended up warmly received in Chile, where he dined with the country’s leadership. During the meal, Archibald was served nuts from the Chile Pinetree to eat as part of the dessert. Archibald ate a few of the nuts, but then he managed to put a handful in his pocket after he recognized that the nuts were actually large seeds. On the trip back to England, Archibald could not wait and he started growing the five precious Chilean pinetree seeds and he managed to get them to grow successfully. Back in England, the evergreen Chili Pine Trees were blessed with a new common name - the Monkey Puzzle tree - after someone remarked that even a monkey would not be able to climb the tree. And Archibald’s unique introduction earned him the moniker “Monkey Puzzle Man.” Sadly, Monkey Puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana "arr-oh-KAR-ee-ah arr-oh-KAN-ah") are considered endangered today. But, like Archibald, gardeners still attempt to grow these curious trees from seed. February 15, 1876 Today is the birthday of the prolific English plant collector, gardener, botanist, and explorer Ernest Henry Wilson. When the botanist Augustine Henry met with a 22-year-old Ernest Henry Wilson, he wrote to his friend, Evelyn Gleesen, to share his impressions of Ernest after their first visit together: “He is a self-made man, knows botany thoroughly, is young, and will get on.” Henry also shared with Evelyn that he, "would be glad if [Wilson] will continue to carry on the work in China which has been on my shoulders for some years. There is so much of interest and novelty." Later the same day, Henry also reported back to Kew about helping Ernest with his quest: “.... [I wrote] on a half-page of a notebook ... a sketch of a tract of country about the size of New York State [on which I marked the place where I had found the single tree of Davidia involucrata (the Dove Tree or Handkerchief Tree) in 1888. I also provided Wilson with useful information and hints.]" Henry and Ernest stayed close and corresponded for the rest of their lives. Henry returned to his native Ireland, and Ernest went on to find the Dove tree. Also known as the Handkerchief Tree, Ernest brought the Dove tree to England in 1899, and it would become his most famous tree introduction. Without a doubt, Ernest’s first trip to China was a resounding success. Ernest returned to England and provided his sponsor, the nurseryman Harry James Veitch, with seeds for over 300 species in addition to 35 very full Wardian cases. Before he left for his second trip to China, Ernest married Hellen Ganderton. And within six months, Ernest was headed back to China with another singular mission: the yellow Chinese poppy (Meconopsis integrifolia) and it's commonly known as the Lampshade Poppy. Not only did Ernest find the yellow Chinese poppy, but he also found the Regal lily, rhododendrons, roses, and primulas. During that second trip, Ernest’s leg was crushed in a landslide. As incredible as it sounds, Ernest’s leg was splinted with the legs of his camera tripod - but the story doesn’t end there. The place where the rockslide occurred was on a very narrow trail - they had been walking single file along the mountainside. Before Ernest could be moved, a mule caravan came upon Ernest and his party. So, Ernest did the only thing he could - he laid down on the trail and let the 40-50 mules step over him on their way across the mountain. I always imagine the surreal experience Ernest had there - laying there in great pain and watching the bellies and hooves and whatever else of the mules passing over him for what must have seemed an eternity. Ernest himself marveled at this experience, and he later said, "The sure-footedness of the mule is well-known, and I realized it with gratitude as these animals one by one passed over me - and not even one frayed my clothing." After this trauma, it took Ernest a full year to walk without crutches. And forever after, Ernest walked with what he called his “lily limp.” Incredibly, when Ernest was asked about the damage to his leg, he simply said, “The price I paid has been stated… The regal lily was worth it and more." After all of his daring experiences and bravery, it was a car crash that ultimately claimed the life of Ernest and his wife. They were driving their roadster on wet roads when their car swerved on a “carpet of leaves” and went over an embankment before plunging 40 feet onto a field - landing on the back bumper with the front wheels in the air. Ernest and Helen died within an hour of the accident. Their little Boston terrier, however, somehow managed to survive. At the time of the accident, Ernest had been working stateside as the Arnold Arboretum’s keeper in Boston. The death of Ernest and Ellen shocked the botanical community and the country. Ernest and Ellen were survived by their daughter — a girl they had adopted and named Muriel Primrose. She was honored with the naming of a bamboo - Fargesia murielae ("Farj-eez-ee-ah Muriel-ee") commonly known as Umbrella Bamboo. Unearthed Words Information is so tantalizingly scanty about the expedition in 1927 for gardener-botanists so distinguished that one expects all the flowers of South Africa to have bowed down to them as they passed. The 4th, Reginald Cory, how to find Garden at Dyffryn near Cardiff, and is gratefully remembered for the bequest of his considerable Fortune to Cambridge University for the benefit of the botanic garden, and up his magnificent Botanical and Horticultural library to The Royal Horticultural Society. — Alice Coats, English gardener and author, The Plant Hunters, Africa Grow That Garden Library Dried Flowers by Morgane Illes This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Techniques and Ideas for the Modern Home. In this book, Morgane updates our preconceived notions regarding dried flowers. If dried flowers aren’t intriguing to you or if you feel that they belong in your 3rd-great grandmother’s steamer trunk along with vintage lace - get ready to be inspired. Morgane brings preserved florals out of the past and into the modern home. Selected for their color, texture, and architectural interest, Morgane's top 30 picks for blooms continue to look incredible after being preserved through drying or pressing. In addition, Morgane showcases fifteen projects that feature dried flowers — from wreaths and wall art, to terrariums and flower crowns. This book is 144 pages of preserved blooms that will enhance your home with everlasting beauty. David shared his advice at the 1992 Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle. “In many instances, the city yard can be used as an outside room. You can extend the space inside the house out into the garden and make the two work as a single unit. It is important, especially for North Americans with large, open backyards, to break down the garden space into a series of smaller rooms. One of the great tricks of landscape design is to create a sense of mystery and surprise as you move from one space into another. If you see everything at once, it becomes uninteresting. But if you break the space down into individual rooms, it becomes inherently more interesting. [England has] some remarkable gardens, but the average backyard is a lot more mundane than most people imagine. We're a nation of plant-lovers, but we're certainly not a nation of garden designers. A lot of our gardens are too busy and overcomplicated.” Next, David offered the following tips for people thinking of making a garden: “Don't let your garden end up a muddle of hard and soft landscaping. Take time to draw up a plan. "Most people tend to rush off to the garden center the first fine day, stick everything in the trunk, and then wonder where to plant it all.” Before planting anything, put in all the hard landscaping, all the decking, walling, paving, the bones, and composition of the gardening. Plants will bring the garden to life, softening the hard surfaces. Keep the design and planting simple. Many gardens suffer from over-complication and gimmicks. Be careful not to use conflicting materials that can be "restless on the eye and hard on the pocket." Resist the temptation to plant too many different things. The well-planted border has a limited number of species that relate well to one another. "There are many foliage textures, colors, and shapes that give you interest throughout the year." You have to think about foliage and texture as well as flower." Remember what Gertrude Jekyll, the famous Edwardian garden designer, taught: hot colors (reds, yellows) foreshorten the space through their vibrancy. "If you put a pot of bright red flowers at the bottom of the garden, your eye will go straight to it. Use hot colors close to the viewpoint and cooler colors farther away. It gives a nice feeling of space, and small gardens can be made to feel larger." Do your homework before planting. Find out if a plant likes sun or shade and how big it will grow. "I'm a great believer in growing what does well in my climate. I won't plant things that are going to look unhappy. I'd much sooner have something that thrives than something that's good for a couple of seasons and then gets knocked off by bad weather." Don't bite off more than you can chew in one season. Take a few years to build your garden.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
A huge glass of champagne is certainly most appropriate for today’s episode where Michelle and Suzanne raise a toast to love and all things related to Valentine’s Day. While the two have vastly different approaches to it, both of our hosts are, naturally, filled with stories and opinions about this holiday, and they don’t hold anything back as they share them here today. They begin with the big event that is quickly approaching for Suzanne, and then proceed to examine the different perspectives on Valentine’s Day that occur at various stages of life, recounting many of their own experiences as well. Along the way, they also review such topics as jewelry shopping, Suzanne’s mother, Valentine’s Day dinner stories, and the origins of Jeff’s favorite expression regarding Suzanne. They conclude by giving ‘shout outs’ to their husbands, and offering a glimpse into future episodes including some interesting information about one of their future guests. Being the very best of friends does not always mean agreeing on everything, and that fact is made crystal clear today as our hosts share their own take on Valentine’s Day and so much more in this very special ‘episode of love and celebration and sensitivity’ couched, as always, in happiness and humor. Episode Highlights: · Suzanne’s big upcoming event · Valentine’s Day stories from different life stages · Their jewelry purchase experience · Valentine’s Day treats · Suzanne’s mother · Michelle’s Valentine’s Day dinners stories · The story behind ‘everlasting vision of loveliness’ · Michelle’s sister · ‘Shout outs’ to Robb and Jeff · Upcoming episode teasers Quotes: “There’s this cynical thread that runs through my family.” “After I had my meltdown – and it wasn’t a little one.” “Why would I hold showing my love for you to one day a year?” “You’re wondering if you’re the only one that got a Valentine’s Day filled with poop.” “It’s the most painful day of the year!” “It always seemed kind of forced.” “Is that like an omen?” “Why would you send flowers when you could send jewelry?” “I felt really spoiled.” “I don’t do gift cards. I don’t believe in them.” “That inspires me for my next story.” “My sister, she was the hellion.” “He’s a lot of work, but I’m up for the challenge.” “You always have a day or two in your life that you hate your husband.” “I think that I will be the yin to your yang.” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! It’s finally February and 2021 is moving along fairly well for both Michelle and Suzanne to this point. One thing that Michelle is particularly looking forward to is going back to visit her house in Alaska, and that trip is the inspiration for today’s episode. Having lived for many years in Alaska, our hosts have received a number of interesting comments and questions about the state, and today they share these along with their responses and, of course, their many stories that just naturally spring up during the discussion. They begin by reviewing their first experiences in Alaska and then engage in responding to the many questions that have come their way over the years. In the process, they recount stories of ‘Binky’, the reality of wildlife in Alaska, and bear and moose encounters. They also offer some insight into its geography, its state bird and flower, termination dust, and some of the great aspects of Alaska. Our hosts also review a few of the weirder questions and comments they have received before finishing up by expressing the pride they have in this great state. Today’s episode really is all about everything you wanted to know about Alaska that some people weren’t afraid to ask, and Suzanne and Michelle take the opportunity to set the record straight in the most heartfelt and humorous way imaginable. For reasons made clear in this week’s episode, Michelle is ‘bored out of her mind’ these days, but that doesn’t stop her from joining Suzanne for yet another entertaining conversation. COVID has, indeed, been a Grinch for our hosts over the past little while, and today they fill you in on all the details. They begin by discussing the COVID diagnoses that both Suzanne and Robb received in December, what their quarantine experiences were like, and Michelle shares details of her own COVID test. Some of their stories regarding those times when they had to be nursemaids to members of their families follow, as well as a discussion about Suzanne’s hypochondria as a child, and what they both are like as patients. They finish up their conversation by reviewing their worst illnesses, including the dreaded strep throat. While the subject matter may be somewhat heavier than usual this week, Michelle and Suzanne’s trademark good humor and vibrant nature render this episode one that will still offer you some things to smile about and, of course, a whole lot of things you’ll find completely relatable. As all rich conversations do, theirs tends to veer off into fascinating asides, but they always find their way back to the main topic of Thanksgiving and all that goes along with it, especially champagne and vodka. In addition to describing what their Thanksgiving holidays usually entail, including traditions and some memorable stories, our hosts also share details about their grocery shopping practices, Suzanne’s pantry, the love of her life, and a glimpse of what life is like in Alaska. Shopping, Black Friday, and even a little bit of Christmas decorating are all explored as well. Prominent throughout the episode is their discussion of those aspects of life, unique to each of them, for which they are thankful – and there are a lot. Once again this week, you are invited to laugh along as you recognize some aspects of your own self in the entertaining stories and insightful observations of these two great friends. Episode Highlights: · What Thanksgiving is like for Michelle and Suzanne · The Thanksgiving meal and traditions · Grocery shopping preferences and practices · Robb’s deep fried turkey experience · Thanksgiving traditions · Michelle and Suzanne’s memorable family experiences · Suzanne’s pantry · What Michelle and Suzanne are thankful for · Shopping and Black Friday · Decorating for Christmas · Alaskan sunshine and temperatures Quotes: “We used to go to Hawaii every year for Thanksgiving.” “Part of being a Pastor’s kid is you have to go to every potluck the church ever has…I hate potluck.” “I buy the groceries, they cook the groceries.” “I have trouble when a room is quiet.” “Nobody was hurt in the making of our turkey, but our driveway was scarred.” “It was a shitshow.” “We always plan our…Thanksgiving dinner around when the Dallas Cowboys are playing football.” “There’s always one family that dominates the conversation at the table.” “We don’t want everyone to hate us already!” “It’s not something they taught you in Sunday School.” “Amazon at our house should have its own line item in the budget.” “I like to touch and feel.” “I now do trees in every room of my house.” “I will never, ever take it for granted when I open my eyes and the sun is shining.” “It’s like The Wizard of Oz.” “We would actually…have to duct tape our faces.” “We’re not going political here.” “Happy Thanksgiving everybody. Today's talk is with Eve Isenberg. Eve and I met in 2005 when I was a project manager at a construction management firm. We built a particularly challenging, special project together. We talk about that project a little, but we start the conversation with her current work, where Eve runs an architecture firm with her partner Brigette Steines, their office InkStone architecture focuses on mid-century modern homes. If you're not familiar with mid-century modern homes, do a little research. I think you'll find a lot of the mid-century modern aesthetics carry into the contemporary architecture we see today.InkStone's practice sustains the legacy of the mid-century modern architectural style while renovating these older homes with today's modern envelopes and mechanical systems. Eve shares good advice for both the first time homeowner doing a project. And then we talk about some of her more seasoned owners and how they experienced projects differently. At the end, Eve and I have an outtake where we reflect on the project we built back in 2005. We talk about the lessons learned from that project, how decisions we made back then played out today. It's an interesting conversation. So enjoy. And if you're inclined to ask questions, please reach out. I'd love to include your questions or discussion on future podcasts. Thanks for listening. Today, I'm joined with my friend Jason Faulhefer and we are going to talk about how to protect your family and their private information during this modern age. PII is personal identifiable information - like security questions, social security info, etc. It is important to look at the terms and conditions for the technology you have in your home, like Amazon Alexa, Siri, etc. A lot of times they will disclose that they share information with third party companies. Understanding the risk - what you should and shouldn't be asking - is important. Know the laws, especially as it pertains to your children. Anything on the internet lives there FOREVER. It stays on the internet. The biggest things that Jason has done to protect his family is: Use a Password manager Freezing his children's credit Not using social media to share information about the family. Educating his family on how to spot scammers and phishers. Jason shares some eye-opening things that you might not realize about the internet. A good rule of thumb is: "The more convenient something is the less secure it is." Everything is driven by an app and phone safety - like protecting your Sim card is also important. This week, we chat with the phenomenally talented, Ben Uyeda. We talk about his incredible undertaking of building a shipping container home in the middle of the Joshua Tree desert, his design process and some of his favorite materials to work with currently. LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040 FAST FACTS ABOUT BEN (FROM BEN): - Started out as a professor at Cornell University speaking about sustainable design. - Started a design firm called Zero Energy Design- https://zeroenergy.com - Started a tech company called Free Green where he gave away free blueprints with eco friendly housing, and sold advertising on the actual downloadable blueprints, and eventually sold it. - Launched Homemade-Modern.com where he started creating DIY projects. Show Highlights: - Ben takes a lot of cues from food media. They don’t need a lot of fancy stuff or gadgets, just understanding the elements. - Plywood and concrete are two of Ben’s favorite materials. Concrete because it’s accessible worldwide, plywood because even if it’s not the same globally, people are at least familiar with sheet goods. - If you’re going to buy furniture try to find the cheapest basics and then splurge on the things you’re going to keep forever. - You can have a creative career that’s not dependent on patronage. - You can be more forgiving: Everything doesn’t have to be perfectly flat, people actually like things that look more homemade. - Tracy asked Ben about the future of architecture and he talked about the trends of smaller homes and more urban type living situations like lofts. Open floor plans becoming the norm, building performance, thermal comfort and smart homes are all trending. - Ben doesn’t like analytics but he values them. When looking for new property he searched areas where Whole Foods were popping up. We Mentioned: The Spiral Staircase Made With CNC- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd-Z7OTAjJ0 The Bucket Stool- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npPRWDgpduI The Lounge Chair- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QHbp2bwUyA Ben’s Shipping Container Project: - Ben felt like there was a lot of misinformation about container construction, so he decided to just show the process and enjoy the fun challenge. - He wanted to show the regulation intensive process of building in California. - You might think a container is a great deal, but take into account the labor cost and how intensive each step can be. Homemade Modern: - Driven by the underserved DIY population of people who wanted to build things in a smaller space with minimal tools. - You can build a ton of stuff with an orbital sander, circular saw and drill. PHONE CALLS/SOCIAL: Q: How long did it take to cut all of the plywood for spiral staircase? A: It was actually cut with a cnc machine (https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve) , so about 30 hours of cnc time. Q: Is there any difference in insulating a shipping container as opposed to a house? A: Yes and no, the only part that’s really different is if you have to insulate between floor beams. Wood isn’t as conductive of heat as steel is. They insulated between steel beams and then continuous insulation above the plywood and from the metal in. Q: Were you building things and taking things apart when you were young? A: Ben loved the way that making could lead to adventure. He was inspired by Swiss Family Robinson and Huckleberry Finn. Q: Besides permits what was the biggest challenge of building the shipping container? A: Just not having clear answers for the workers on how to do things. They’d ask questions about how to do things and Ben had to research and figure things out as they moved forward. (And holding his temper in the comment section of the videos…) Q: What’s the cheapest place to get a shipping container? A: It depends on where you are. In CA they have to be a one trip condition container. In SoCal it’s https://containersdiscount.ca Find Ben’s Quickfire video on our Instagram! @howtohome_guide Ben’s INFO Website | https://www.homemade-modern.com Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda Twitter | https://twitter.com/BenUyeda Pinterest | https://www.pinterest.com/BenUyeda/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/ben.uyeda Youtube | https://www.youtube.com/HomeMadeModern The Modern Home Project | https://www.youtube.com/themodernhomeproject FOLLOW US on social media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM
Heather Kirtland and Marissa Huber are two artists and mothers, who happen to be the dynamic duo behind the Instagram community Carve Out Time for Art and blog by the same name (COTFA for short). The goal of COTFA is to cultivate a positive and nurturing community for creatives who want to find time to satisfy this part of their identity – a perfect match for Everyday Creative People! Some of the things we talked about included: * The power of self talk and the importance of choosing to claim your own creative identity * How motherhood impacted both Heather and Marissa as artists* How to make art amidst a busy life, even (especially) if you don’t have a dedicated space to do it in Marissa founded Carve Out Time for Art in 2015 after the frustration of being told she’d never have time to create once she had children. She didn’t want to give up on her own dreams and felt being a mother made her a better artist. She set off to interview women who were making it work, and unintentionally created a community of artists. She teamed up with Heather Kirtland that same year to start writing a book on artist mothers, and they became partners in writing and in creative shenanigans for their COTFA community. Marissa Huber is an artist, writer, designer, connector, and mother who lives in South Florida with her husband and two children. By day, she uses her interior design background as an Occupancy Planner, where she plays Tetris with space and is a friendly hostage negotiator for offices. You can visit her at marissahuber.com or follow her on Instagram and Pinterest, both @marissahuber. Heather Kirtland currently teaches encaustic workshops and is focused on her own studio practice. She was awarded The Maryland State Arts Council Grant and was a resident artist at The Holt Center. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, abroad in Italy and Wales, and in Modern Home and Country Living UK magazines. Heather recently moved from Baltimore to a more rural part of Maryland where she lives with her husband and two children and Luna their rescue dog. When she is not painting she loves to read, run and encourage other mothers to find a creative outlet through Carve Out Time for Art. You can check her out at heatherkirtland.com or on Instagram @heatherkirtland.

Welcome to Episode 47 of Sit & Sew Radio, a Quilt Addicts Anonymous podcast! We're so excited to be back with another episode after a break. We're back with an interview with Frank Bennett, the CEO of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. We spoke with Frank while we were in Paducah for AQS QuiltWeek in April, and things have been a bit crazy over here at Quilt Addicts Anonymous ever since. As soon as I returned I had to hustle to finish multiple projects for Quilt Market in Portland. Check out my vlog that I did by clicking here to see all that went into getting ready for quilt market and the different projects I created. Also during that time we were working on shooting photos for my first book, Simple Quilts for the Modern Home, which is available for preorder. After that, we zeroed in on the launch of our FREE Beginner Quilting series sponsored by QT Fabrics. The series consists of 12 videos and teaches you everything you need to know about quilting from beginning to end. It has been great to see some of the responses to the videos and how it has been helpful for beginner and veteran quilters alike. Check out the videos at quiltaddictsanonymous.com/learntoquilt and download the FREE pattern to get a 20% off coupon for the supplies you'll need to get started! Listen to the episode to hear more about what we've been up to and what's coming next at Quilt Addicts Anonymous. Frank Bennett, CEO of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky. It was great to chat with Frank Bennett, CEO of the National Quilt Museum, who took some time out of his very busy schedule to meet with me during the week of the big quilt show. It was my first visit to Paducah, and it is clear this is a huge week for the town and the museum. Frank and I chat about some of the exciting things going on in Paducah during show week as well as some of the exhibits at the museum. One of the big topics is the museum's Free Block of the Month Club which launched a few months ago. I am super excited to be one of the designers who will be doing a block for the club due out in April. Listen to the episode to hear what my block is and what I have planned. Learn more about the museum's free Block of the Month Club and sign up at the Facebook page by clicking here. Thanks again for checking out Episode 47 of Sit & Sew Radio. Here's a link to the National Quilt Museum website if you want to learn more about what it has to offer.
Updating your home, either for your own enjoyment or to prepare it for the market, can be achieved through a few strategic projects. Selling your Colorado home? Get a free home value report Buying a Colorado home? Search all homes for sale Whether you're preparing to list or simply want to keep your property up to date, there are a number of home improvement projects I recommend. “SOMETIMES THE SIMPLEST CHANGES MAKE THE GREATEST IMPACT.” 1. Make kitchen updates. Solid-surface countertops, stainless steel appliances, and white cabinets are all great choices that never go out of style. Including these features in your own kitchen can really make the room shine. 2. Make bathroom updates. Solid-surface countertops are also popular in bathrooms. One popular bathroom update in higher-end homes is the inclusion of heated floors. 3. Update the flooring. Carpet is still popular in bedrooms and family rooms, but hardwood flooring is the way to go in kitchens, dining rooms, hallways, and more. 4. Update the lighting and plumbing fixtures. Brass is no longer a sought-after finish for these home features. Instead, opt for brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze. 5. Add fresh paint. Light, neutral colors such as beige are a good go-to choice these days. Greys are also very popular. Sometimes the simplest changes make the greatest impact. 6. Pay attention to current trends. Open floor plans are something many buyers look for in a home. Also, outdoor living areas have become more highly sought-after. Formal dining rooms, on the other hand, seem to be falling out of favor. If you have any other questions, would like more information, or want to know how we can help you meet your real estate goals, feel free to give my team and me a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Welcome to Episode 40 of Sit & Sew Radio, a Quilt Addicts Anonymous podcast. This week we have Shell Rummel on, and I couldn’t be more excited to introduce her to you all. Shell is a fine artist whose watercolor designs are licensed by the Free Spirit/Coats team to bring fabulous modern coastal quilting fabric to all of us. But Shell is far more than just a fabric designer. Her designs are also available as bedding and bath sets, rugs, silk pillows, wall paper and even house paint. And between now and February 9, 2018 you can save 25 percent on all Shell Rummel fabric we have in stock over at shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com using the coupon code SEWSHELL. Real quick before we get to the episode, make sure you head over to shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com to sign up for the Dimensions Block of the Month by January 31, 2018 when sign ups close! I just love this Block of the Month design because each month we are just using two fabrics, one solid and one Kinkame Shades ombre fabric available through Clothworks. I have always wanted to design a quilt with ombre fabrics that really shows off the color changes that happen across the width of fabric, and Dimensions is that quilt. Check out the video we made above to get a preview of this quilt and click here to sign up. Shell Rummel, Fine Artist & Designer I fell in love with Shell Rummel’s fabric long before I met Shell. I am normally all for the bright and vibrant fabrics, but I just can’t get enough of Shell’s fabric. The soft color palette is just gorgeous and it challenges me in my fabric placement to create drama with the ranges of color, rather than relying on a bright focus print to do the work for me. The results are fabulous. I used two of her fabric lines in quilts for my book, “Simple Quilts for the Modern Home” that is due out later this year, and tagged her on Instagram with a few sneak peaks. I had no expectations and just wanted to show other Shell Rummel fans what I was up to. But Shell replied and before I knew it we were talking on the phone discussing future collaborations. None of those projects are out in the world yet, but stay tuned, they are coming later this summer. I just love everything about Shell and I hope you do to. You can see more of her home décor creations at www.shellrummel.com.
On this week's episode of A Taste of the Past, host Linda Pelaccio speaks with chef and cookbook author Joyce Goldstein. For twelve years she was Chef and Owner of the ground-breaking Mediterranean Restaurant, SQUARE ONE, in San Francisco. A consultant to the restaurant and food industries, Joyce’s areas of expertise are recipe development, menu design, and staff training. She is the author of Inside the California Food Revolution, and her latest book is The New Mediterranean Jewish Table: Old World Recipes for the Modern Home.
In this episode of AnthroTalking, we talk to Inge Daniels about her ongoing research on amateur photographic practises in Japan. Daniels is an Associate Professor in Social Anthropology at University of Oxford, and also a Fellow at St Cross College. She finished her PhD in 2001 at University College London, and in 2010 she published the book “The Japanese House: Material Culture in the Modern Home” at Berg Publishers (Oxford), which won the ICAS Book Prize in 2013. In this episode, Daniels tells us about how the stereotype of Japanese people taking lots of photos can be said to carry some truth with it. She was intrigued by how the people she met and lived with in Japan tended to avoid displaying personal photos. Instead of associating photos with memories, to Japanese people, it is more about the future and looking forward, Daniels argues. Analytically, photography as a practice enables them to question normative practices. Thus, by using photos, these people create a certain imagination of themselves and their family, but also beyond it.
