Hi there! It's Lauren and Kristýna and this is our podcast Let's Chew the Fat. We met in Spain, after we'd both decided to move there to study a 4 year bachelor's degree! This crazy decision has become our everyday topic of conversation. So, we figured
Very, very soon (we're both not completely aware of how soon it is), we'll be going abroad for a semester: Lauren Australia and Kristýna to Belgium! So, in this episode we wanted to share why we decided to do a semester abroad, what our goals and expectations are, what we're a bit worried about and what we can't wait to experience. If you too are going abroad next semester, this might be the one for you! As always, we hope you enjoy this episode. You know the trend on social media where it says "when you remember you you're living the life you're younger you dreamed of"? Well, it probably wasn't phrased like this but for some reason I can't remember and there are probably also multiple versions. Listen, it's important to, every once in a while, stop and think about what you love about yourself. We tend to think more about the negative things and don't realise how proud we actually are of what we've accomplished, gone through and built for ourselves. It's Kristýna's turn to spill the tea. We did Lauren‘s interview a couple of weeks ago and so today, Lauren asked Kristýna some good questions. And she had some good answers. There's things we grew up with that seem normal to us, but when you tell a friend who grew up in a different country you realise it's actually not that normal at all... And for this episode, we collected a whole list of these things. Lauren for Switzerland and Kristýna for the Czech Republic. So, here are a couple of things you might not know about our countries: from mandatory schooling for dogs in Switzerland, all the way to the large consumption of beer in the Czech Republic. We hope you enjoy this episode and maybe learn something new! You've probably heard of FOMO aka Fear of missing out, right? And you've probably felt it at least once in your life... Well, don't worry, you're not alone. This is a veryyy special episode!! We decided to ask our friends a list of questions with the goal of learning more about what life has taught them so far, what wisdom they have to share, and what they're struggling with at the moment. It's supposed to be a little pocket of comfort and inspiration. Growing up is difficult and navigating the early years of adulthood can be challenging. So, sometimes we need a reminder that we're all in this together, even while we're all facing our own challenges, learning are own lessons – you're never quite as alone as you feel. There's always someone out there dealing with the same thing you're dealing with. I loved hearing what everybody had to share: I felt so proud of them listening to their answers and I found a lot of comfort and motivation in what they had to say. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed making it. And I hope you too can take something from it. It's been a while since we said our first goodbyes. During this conversation we realised our view on them changed dramatically. The both of us have different strategies as to how to go through with the goodbyes and we're debating which one is better. Dramatizing it and doing a whole goodbye event every time we leave or pretending there is no going away and kind of ignoring it? You decide.. And with goodbyes come hellos too! We have to say, we kind of miss the emotional airport arrivals but at the same time it means we're stronger now and we also have new beautiful hellos in Madrid. So in our books, it's a win-win. And let's not talk about the last goodbye that will come a the end of our university experience... Enjoy this episode! Unsurprisingly, our weekly recap was focused on one thing and one thing only: the 5 Seconds of Summer concert and the aftermath of it. It was the most incredible experience and we're still not over it – let's just say that much for now. For our main part, we had another special guest on! Ana's originally from Greece and in the last two years she's studied and worked in France and the Czech Republic. We got to ask her all of our questions and get another perspective on leaving your country and making a life for yourself abroad. She talked about differences in culture, what it's like to make and have friends in various places, what she's learned from it all, and much more. We loved getting to talk to hear and we hope you enjoy this conversation too! Finally: Bookclub! Kristyna finally finished 'The Robber Bride', Lauren's trying to love 'Happy Place', we talk about 'Gilmore Girls' and 'Sitting in Bars with Cake', and finally share our songs of the week. We hope you enjoy this special episode. Sarah L. Thompson accepted our invitation to come onto our podcast and oh boy, we're so glad she did. She shared her story, how she ended up where she is now (living in Italy with her husband and two children), what was it like to move all the way from the US, the struggles that came with it but also what a beautiful life she's created. We related to each other to what it's like having to learn a new language and immerse into a new and different culture (and let's not forget the culture shocks!!). This episode is packed with challenges, advice, compassion, inspiration and so much more! We can honestly say, that this has been the easiest transition from being back in our home countries to coming back to Madrid for university yet. Which is a huge success! Of course, goodbyes are always difficult, but the days before leaving now contain less crying and settling back into life in Madrid is so much easier and happens way faster. It took us a while to get to this point, but we're so thankful. (And hopefully it only gets better from here on.) For this episode's main topic, we do another semester outlook. It's a tradition at this point! We're starting our first semester of our third year of our Journalism degree (which is insane!) and want to take a look at our classes and talk about our first impressions and expectations. We definitely have a very interesting mix of classes this time around: from Feature Writing, to Investigative Reporting, to Multimedia Communication, ... We can't wait to listen back to this episode in a couple of months and realise that we were wrong about everything and had no idea about what was ahead of us. And of course, we end this episode with our bookclub: Lauren's has finally almost finished all of the books she started reading in May (how impressive!) and Kristyna is still working her way through a really long Margaret Atwood book. Additionally, Lauren has a couple of documentary recommendations: 'One Child Nation' and 'Generation Wealth'. And Kristyna's trying her best to keep up with all the new shows that are currently coming out. And, obviously, we share our songs of the week. (Well Lauren actually decided to change the rules and mention two full albums...) We're really excited to be back and hope you enjoy this episode. If you listened to the previous episode, you know the drill. We are far away from each other with Lauren and it's difficult to match up our schedules and record together so we tried this new concept of solo episodes. I decided to focus on the "frustrations" that come with studying abroad. Like I said in the episode as much as I am grateful to have this opportunity, it's also really hard sometimes and I want to share these hardships because I am sure there are people out there going through the same. One big thing for me is romantic relationships and the fact that I've been struggling with having one while studying and living abroad. Another huge thing is not being able to be there for my family when they need me. For example when caring for our grandparents. Which is also connected to being scared of losing them and never knowing when is the last time I see them. I hope you can relate to this episode and if you do let me know, please! This is my first ever solo-episode! It's quite difficult for Kristyna and I to coordinate and find the time to record together while we're back in our hometowns for the summer. So, we decided to do a couple of solo-episodes, where we talk about topics that we're passionate about. In this episode, I quickly update you on what I've been doing these past months: I spent three weeks working on a farm / in a hotel in Italy, traveled to La Spezia on the way back, and focused on making memories with family and friends while back in Switzerland. For the main part, I decided to talk about the concept of 'home'. Where or what is home to me? How did moving away change things? Why do I feel like a guest in my own hometown sometimes? I dive right into it! Finally, I talk about the (very minimal) reading that I've been doing. But I have finished 'Forever, Interrupted' by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which I've been working on for forever! I mention the show 'Modern Love', which I've rediscovered, a 'High School Musical' movie night with my cousins, and share my summer song 'bellissimissima
What were our first weeks of summer break like? Lauren has entered her Kristyna-Era, meaning she's been traveling non-stop. Spent a week being a tourist in Madrid, then went to London for a Harry Styles concert (as you do), and then spend a couple of days exploring Lisbon before finally going back home to Switzerland. Kristyna went back home and dove right into her internship, which has been quite the adventure. No sleep, very last minute scheduling, etc. – it contains everything she loves in life. Besides that though, she's been really enjoying it and learning a lot. This episode focuses on our traditional semester recap: we take a look back at our classes from the fourth semester of Journalism. What were our initial impressions and expectations and how did we end up experiencing these classes? We talk about Online Journalism, Design Thinking, Televisión Informativa, etc. It was a rollercoaster of a semester for sure! And finally, it's time for our book club: we've been pretty busy, so, we haven't been reading or watching much. Kristyna did read two books about different end-of-world scenarios, and Lauren watched an Amazon Prime Documentary called 'Happy Shiny People'. Lauren goes on a passionate rant about Noah Kahan's new extended album 'Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever)' and Kristyna talks about her 'Prague Rocks' Festival experiencing, where she got to see Maroon 5 and (some of) James Bay. We hope you're having a nice summer too! And we hope you enjoy this episode. Honestly, nothing much's changed. These last couple of weeks were HARD. Having to finish all projects, study for exams, completing learning agreements, trying to find internships, pack to go home... All if this combined together was extremely draining. We knew we had very little time left to go but we couldn't see past the horrible time we were having. But we did it! We also had some fun activities like picking up our pottery that we painted a week ago. And it turned out really pretty! We developed a new tradition: Write each other a letter at the beginning of the semester, put it away and read it on our podcast right before we go home for our break. This time, we actually wrote it super early and so we completely forgot what we wrote. We were quite surprised, to say the least. In between exams, we love to do movie nights so we can turn our brains off for a bit. And this time we watched Cars 1 & 2 (although to be honest, we never finished the second one because we were exhausted and never found the time again...). We absolutely loved it! It's amazing how it's made for people of different ages. Kids can watch it for entertainment and visual "effects" and adults can watch with them because of the hidden real life stories. This past week consisted of studying, working, exams, and – whenever we were feeling especially crazy – the occasional walk. On Thursday we even went all out and decided to take the afternoon off to go ceramics painting with our friends – which was a great experience and a very much needed break. Other than that, we talk about our study routine, not being able to sleep, how our first two exams went, and a lot of other fun stuff... For this week's main topic, we asked you for your assumption about us or international students in general. We all hate our home country? We're all rich? We don't take university seriously? We never fight? We address all of these assumptions and many more. Finally, we discuss 'Forever, Interrupted' by Taylor Jenkins Reid and 'Things I Want My Daughters To Know' by Elizabeth Noble or our book club section. We even watched a movie this week: Monsters Inc.! And Kristyna talks about the newest season of 'Selling Sunset', which she is not impressed by. And, of course, we share our songs of the week: 'Kids Again' by Sam Smith and 'El Mismo Bar' by De Rancho, H. Roto, and GARZI. We hope you enjoy this episode. A very exciting week! We went to a Eurovision watching event and it was Kristyna's first. And she loved it. We finally finally finished our university end-of-semester projects as we're moving into the proper exam preparation. The ice hockey world championship of 2023 has started and Kristyna has been watching all the games. And one last thing, we're both working on our Learning Agreements for Erasmus (in Lauren's case non-european mobility). This month marks our first year of living together! A year ago, we made the decision to try it, after knowing each other for a year. It has come with some challenges for sure but we really enjoy being able to talk whenever we want to, have movie nights, etc. We explain how the process of moving in together was, what we were afraid of, what we've learned from each other so far and so much more. At the end of the episode, we talk about Eurovision 2023 in more depth and explain our issues with it. Kristyna touches on how she regularly discovers new music and Lauren explains how an album is created. A lot of culture, let me tell you! This past week, Kristyna turned 21! (Although her actual Birthday was mostly spent doing work for our spreadsheet class...) We did find the time to go bowling and get cocktails with friends in the evening – which felt like a vacation! And, the day after, Kristyna actually went on a trip to Malaga with her mom and got to enjoy some sunny days by the beach. Other than that, we spent our days chasing deadlines after deadline, as all the final projects suddenly had to be finished. It was a stressful week to say the least. For this weeks main topic, we decided to take a look back and compare our high school experiences to our current university years. Lauren talks about the intense academic pressure that she was under during high school and how her relationship to grades has improved drastically. Thankfully! We also talk about how much more freedom we have now and how we can spend this time exploring different projects and finding our interests. We definitely realized that there were some significant differences in between our lives then and now. And a lot of that certainly also has to do with personal growth. Our traditional bookclub once again wasn't really a bookclub, since we didn't read much. (We blame university – this is not on us...) Instead we planned out our summer and dreamt about reading by the lake and going to outdoor car cinemas. We have a high hopes for the upcoming months! And, of course, we shared our songs of the weeks and played an interesting(?) game connected last week's songs competition on Instagram. Thanks for joining us on this episode – we hope you enjoy it! Once again, Lauren got sick. Luckily, it wasn't anything crazy this time around and she got better pretty quickly. And good thing she did because her and her dad got the opportunityx to go watch a Madrid open tennis match and it was very nostalgic. Kristyna went to visit her friend to Valencia, where she is studying on Erasmus and she had an amazing time! She watched a sunset, played beach volleyball, padel, worked... It was a busy few days. Since we are university students and we're at the end of another semester (which is crazy) and exams are knocking at our door, we talked about when we feel the most productive, when we tend to procrastinate and also how! We haven't progressed with our books too much but Kristyna talked about the lacrosse tournament happening in her hometown and how amazing it feels to be a part of something that brings people together. We also side tracked and talked about BeReal for a second. And of course, songs of the week! We're on a bit of an interesting recording schedule these days, due to sickness and travel. So, for this episodes weekly recap, we decided to just focus on our weekend trip to Barcelona. Since we have a lot to talk about! The trip finally managed to make it out of the group chat and us and our friends enjoyed three days in Barcelona. We didn't get a lot of sleep, but we definitely made the most out of our time there and made so many great memories. For the main topic, we discuss our habits and routines. We talk about whether or not we like and/or need routines, what habits we cherish or would like to implement in our lives, study routines that have paid off... and a lot more! We even look back at our childhoods and how present routines were in our day to day lives back then. As always, we end the episode with our bookclub. We've been VERY busy, so, we haven't been reading and watching much. We're both still stuck on the same books... But we do have our songs of the week to share: Lauren chose 'Bad Omens' by 5SOS and Kristyna chose 'Wonderland' from Seafret's newest album. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode! We are in our concert girly era and we love it. Last weekend, we didn't go to one concert... We went to two! The first one was of SYML, where we went with the whole friend group and it was amazing. Brian (the lead singer) waqs interactong with the audience in a very special way and even took Kristýna's BeReal picture! The next morning, we watched the new Lewis Capaldi Netflix documentary, which was great. And the day after that, Birdy concert happened and we were just... so happy. In this episode's main part, we've decided to talk about future. And aůll the stress around that. Because somehow, it always seems like such a scary thing but in the end, we always look back at some points of our life and we say, hm, it wasn't that bad. So this episode is very honest but hopefully also encouraging. (We loved talking about this topic.) In the book club section, we talked about the Lewis Capaldi documentary some more, Kristýna is currently reading Cather in the Rye, Lauren isn't reading at all but of course, we enjoyed our song of the week section. In this episode, we look back at a week containing a migraine, the end (finally!) of Kristyna's sickness, a hectic Thursday, and Lauren's dad's book event. And: The beginning of the most stressful part of the semester. Slowly but surely, all of the deadlines are getting closer and closer and stress-levels are starting to increase. It's very exciting... For the main part, we decided to talk about a topic that is outside of what we usually focus on. We talk about our relationship with our bodies, food, and sports, what we've struggled with, what we've learned, and where we're at now. Insecurities regarding your body and a complicated relationship with food and sports is something that most people deal with at some point in their lives and in some shape or form. That why we figured it would be an interesting topic to discuss and we wanted share our experience with it. This episode ends with our bookclub, as always. Lauren made pretty much zero progress with her book. But Kristyna finished reading the book 'Subtweet' and really enjoyed it. We also talk about 'Love is Blind' and, of course, share our songs of the week! We hope you enjoy listening to this episode. Kristyna was sick this past week, that's why there wasn't any new podcast episode last Sunday. Lauren's grandparents finally arrived. But the weekend before all went down, we got to do a little trip to Patones de Arriba. We wanted to see a local Grand Canyon but for one small particular reason, what turned out to be quite an important detail, we didn't get to. But we hiked anyways and it was (once again for many reasons) an unforgettable experience. Right in the beginning of our podcast journey, we talked about our culture shocks of living abroad in Spain. By then, we have only lived here for a couple of months. So today, after having lived in Madrid for almost two years, we've decided to do an updated version! In the book club section, we talked about some shows like How I Met Your Mother or Love is Blind, Lauren has started reading a new book but most importantly, in our Song of the Week segment, Kristyna had to rap! She lost the first round of the song poll and this was the "punishment". Hope you like it! We begin this episode like we do any other: By looking back at our past week. We both spent a good amount of the weekend working, enjoyed a Monday off (we still don't know why we didn't have university class) painting at the park, played padel, and went on a spontaneous train trip to a beautiful village outside of Madrid (Lauren's newest "highlight of her life"). So, all in all, a successful week! We decided to dedicate the main part of this episode to a very important topic: Daisy Jones & The Six the Series. We briefly touch on our our opinions of the book (we loved it, obviously), but mostly focus on what we thought of the show adaption. And a warning: There are a lot of spoilers. So, if you haven't read the book / watched the show and our still planning too, maybe come back to this episode later. Honestly, this episode contains some very passionate conversations and speeches. Pretty sure, this is the most strongly we've ever felt about any podcast episode topic. (I don't know what that says about us...) We're also very interesting in hearing your opinions on the book and the show – please let us know! As always, we end the episode with our bookclub: Lauren finally finished the book she's been reading for the past three months – what a day! And we share our songs of the week with you. (This time around you get three, initially, we chose the same song...) We hope you'll enjoy this episode. We had an amazing and eventful weekend! The main even was a school run (that Lauren refuses to call anything else than MARATHON) and it was so much fun! Kristyna managed to run those 5 kilometres as Lauren and her sister watched. During the week, we did a lot of sport activities like padel and a mini hike to the (geographical) centre of the Iberian Peninsula, which we had on our list for quite some time haha. Today, we dove into the positives of what studying abroad has brought us so far in these almost 2 years. And it is quite a list to be honest! We talked about our self-confidence growing, navigating new friendships while maintaining the ones from home and independence – that is a big one. When we got sick for the first time after leaving home, we felt a little scared. It feels uncomfortable not having your parents by your side in case you need them. And our book club has a little update! More specifically, 'the song of the week' part. We are turning it into a little game, we want you to be able to participate too! Hope you like it:) With love, L&K Our IG / TikTok account: 2strangers2friends Our YouTube Channel: L&K Abroad CREDITS: intro+outro: Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/walz/name, License code: NCB87HXDYNPVYJUJ sectioning music: Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/all-good-folks/together, License code: I9UE6CSLJPDSMDPX --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lets-chew-the-fat/message
As always, we spend the first part of this episode talking about our week. We both spent the last weekend working (not very eventful) and then started the week with an amazing university class: we were told to bring our dogs along! Which was incredible – no further explanation needed. We also had a stressful Adobe inDesign assignment, had our very last cooking class (we got the credit!), Lauren's sister arrived in Madrid and Kristyna went golfing for the first time in forever. For this episodes main topic we answered the questions that we were asked on Instagram – which was so much fun for us, we've always wanted to do this! We talked about getting the courage to study abroad, what to do when you're feeling homesick, how we became friends, what languages we speak, and a lot more. Finally, for our bookclub segment we discussed the books we've been discussing for weeks because we just can't seem to finish them... We talk about the newest episodes of 'You' and we each share our song of the week. Per usual, we start with recapping our week but lately we are having issues with remembering what we did during the weekend. Lauren went to get bagels and ice cream (!!!) and Kristýna went for a run after almost a year. Other than that, we didn't do a lot. And during the week, we had our second cooking class, a very busy Thursday; filming outside of university for our TV class and a bunch of other classes. In the main part of this episode, as you can see from the title, we dive into our passion for concerts. Kristýna will soon celebrate a year of concert craziness, whereas Lauren has been in it for years. Some of our favorite artists that we saw live are Lewis Capaldi, 5 Seconds of Summer, Yungblud, Måneskin and more. In our book club section, we talked about our impressions of the new season of You. And books? Haven't advanced much since last week. But we introduced a new mini-section, which is 'Song of the week'. So if you have any recommendations for us, let us know! This episode starts off with a harmless weekly recap: It wasn't our best week. We were tired and things just felt off. But we did have our first vegan cooking class of this semester, which was a lot of fun and brought us a great dinner! And then for the main topic we decided to just dive right in and discuss the horrible feeling of guilt that we've experienced in connection to moving so far away from our hometowns and the people in it. Missing out on milestones, family traditions, and important events and not being able to support the people you love when they need it most – it's not a great feeling. We talk about when the guilt is the worst, how we've dealt with it in the past and how this feeling might even be useful. For our traditional bookclub, we talk about the huge amount of new shows that are coming out at the moment. We just watched the first episode of the newest season of 'You' and Kristyna's already half through the new episodes of 'Outer Banks'. We hope you enjoy this episode. And if you've also experienced the guilt that comes with moving away from home, maybe you'll find some comfort in this conversation. Kristýna went to uni classes for a week and then took off again, this time to Tenerife with her mom. Lauren is a proper student and so she kept going to classes, where to her words “nothing great happened but also nothing awful happened”. Madrid is currently working on improving the cercanías train lines and so it creates a lot of traffic issues. So Kristýna and Lauren ranted about how annoying and stressful it is to try to get to places now. The topic of emotions and feelings is very close to us right now. We've been going through a lot these past few year. We have been challenged to say the least. And sometimes we wonder, if we are too dramatic, or if we experience things too heavily, or if what we feel is even normal. But the truth is, we can't necessarily do anything about it. We just have to accept that we feel deeply and let it go. Because asking ourselves the never answered question 'why' doesn't get us anywhere. Our book club isn't going as great as we'd love to because we are both a little confused about what we're reading about. But we are determined to continue and figure it out. There is a lot of new seasons of shows coming out, which we don't have a lot of time for but we will for sure get into that. Hopefully, you can relate to this episode:). Sooo... this episode was a fun one to edit. We were both in a really good mood while recording: Kristyna was finally out of the difficult transition phase that comes moving back and forth between two countries and we'd both just enjoyed a sunny day at the park. We talk about our first BodyCross and Zumba classes (Lauren was really just thrown into it...) and look back at a week full of classes. This episode is a semester outlook: We take you through all the classes that we have this semester, what our first impressions were and what we thing awaits us in the next couple months. Spoiler: We have like 4 different "businesses" (Lauren's not quite sure which ones she's the CEO of) and are expecting a good amount of assignments. But hopefully the final exams will be a bit easier on us this time around. And then for the traditional bookclub! This one's an exciting one 'cause Kristyna took Lauren's advice and read Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. And (of course!) she loved it. You can also expect a passionate rant about Kristyna's new book light (she highly recommends it)! We hope you have fun listening to this episode. Kristýna finally arrived to Madrid as well but before she left, she went to visit her grandparents, did some last minutes doctor's appointments and spend the day of her flight with her sisters. Since the university classes already began, Lauren had a rough week (going to Spanish classes alone, without Kristýna made it even worse). But we went to an amazing concert of an Eurovision contestant Amanda Tenfjord that made us both very happy. The production was just… something else. In the main part of this episode we dove into the heavy topic of going back and forth between Madrid and our home countries. It has been extremely difficult since the beginning and the scariest thing is that it never gets easier. Only the cause and reason of the difficulty changes over time. We would have never thought we would have to go through anything like this and the cycle is becoming emotionally draining. At least the good thing is that now, you can find a lot of content that you can indentify with and relate to. Because that really helps you feel normal and that you are not overreacting over what's happening with you. We compared leaving for Madrid in the past and now as well as going home the first time and the other times. In the book club part, we celebrate Kristýna's amazing achievement of finally finishing The Wuthering Heights and Lauren announces she's started reading her dad's newly published book called The Sedan! In this episode, we catch each other up on our lives: What did we spend January doing? We talk about New Years, spending time with family and friends back home, coming back to Madrid for our Economics exam, a trip to Gran Canaria... and so on and so forth. This has become a tradition: After every semester of our Journalism degree, we dedicate an episode to recapping the classes of the past months. Information Law, Documentary Film, Radio Journalism, etc. We had a wide range of classes this year. Some we liked more than others. Certain courses were a bit more challenging than others. And some completely destroyed us. And we're here to talk about it all! As always, we end this episode with a short bookclub session. Lauren still hasn't finished the book she started in November, but has instead started a new one called "The Vanishing Half". And Kristyna just finished a Swedish book that she really enjoyed. We hope you enjoy this conversation. Thanks for listening! First of all: HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope you had a nice time celebrating the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023 last night. And we wish you all the best for this new year! We wanted to surprise you with this bonus episode: It's the second part of our conversation with a friend of ours who shared her own experience moving and living abroad with us. We're not gonna lie; this second part is a little more random and chaotic than the first. Nevertheless, it was an entertaining and insightful conversation that we think you'll enjoy! As always, we give you the rundown of our past week: The semester ended and we flew back to our home countries for Christmas! And you can join us for our "bookclub" where we talked about Lauren's experience reading 'Carrie Soto is Back' and finally getting around to watching a Christmas show (she almost didn't make it in time). And we both still haven't finished the books we've been struggling to get through for weeks now... We hope you enjoy this special bonus episode! Also: Lauren forgot her microphone in Madrid. So, please forgive her and excuse the not so great quality of the audio... In our last week before going home, we managed to study, do a secret activity that Kristýna planned and nobody had any idea about, have an amazing Christmas dinner with our friend group and study some more. The days have gotten way longer and more draining but we're almost there (at least that's what we keep saying each other to not go crazy). Kristýna writes herself a letter every year and so we decided to do that too in a different way. We wrote a letter to each other (we were supposed to do it in the beginning of the semester but Lauren kept forgetting and wrote it 2 weeks prior) and now read it out loud accompanying it with great comments of course. It was a lot of fun and it was really sweet. This is our last episode of the year 2022 and we hope you will continue being with us in the next one! Happy Holidays! We have not been doing much. Well, that's a lie, we have been studying like crazy. It's just that we have a pretty regular routine going on everyday and so it's not as interesting. We did have one day though that was a bit different and we both enjoyed it very much. We needed to go to the centre to run some errands and we turned it into a date with ourselves, kind of. The year of 2022 is slowly (very quickly acually) coming to an end and we have been coming up with some habits and goals we would love to focus on in the future. We are not big fans of the concept of New Year's resolutions because we want to do these things in the long run, not necessarily just achieve them in one year, per se. It's always good to try to improve ourselves, adapt new habits, not be afraid of trying new things and so that's what we want to do. Yet again, we didn't talk about books in our so called 'book club' section. We just don't have the motivation right now. BUT we finally (!!) finished The Circle season 4 and it was very bittersweet. Everybody was so cute and nice that it was almost sad to watch them go home. Kristýna discovered that Lauren has never seen a single second of the Twilight saga and she felt the urge to fix that. And so we kicked off the Twilight marathon and will keep reporting on that! A lot happened this past week: Lauren went on a work trip to Frankfurt, Kristyna had a very disappointing experiencing trying to go to the official lighting of the Christmas lights in Madrid, Lauren had a stressful experience being the editor of a news program for our Radio class, we went to a Christmas vegan baking class, and Lauren got food poisoning (this is unrelated to the vegan baking class!). This week we have a special guest: We interviewed a friend and got to hear her perspective on moving and living abroad. She's originally from the US, spent some time in England and is now living in here in Spain. We loved talking to her about how she experienced the transition from one country to another. What culture shocks did she experience? How did she make friends? How do you get used to speaking different languages and how does your personality change depending on what language you're speaking? And: She also joined us for book club! We loved talking to her about all the books she's been reading and her reading habits. We hope you enjoy this special episode (and look out for a part 2...) We both got sick. I mean, Lauren has been sick for a very long time now (she basically skipped a whole month of pilates classes) and Kristýna couldn't resist anymore. This being said, you might think that we didn't do anything, which is a very wrong assumption. We did rest during the weekend (we were forced to) but during the week, we did many other things. We filmed a TikTok (as an assignment for school!!), Kristýna cried multiple times and had a breakdown and Lauren was just trying to survive. We switch in between multiple languages all the time. Now that we live abroad and study in a non-native language, we constantly use various languages and sometimes it is really hard. Our love for languages is still strong and growing but also we struggle with it a little bit. You have to distinguish each person according to the language you speak with them, then when you're writing an assignment, you need to make sure you're using the appropriate language etc. Not to mention our inability to be able to express ourselves well in any of the languages. But it's also fun. In most of the situations we feel frustrated, we just laugh. (Because that's all we can do hahah) We haven't been reading so at the end, we talked about our recent new music discoveries and some other (very important) things. Enjoy! We had a boring, but stressful and productive week. A lot of studying, exams, assignments... Basically one deadline after another. At this point we really just need the semester to end and our break to be here. But within all the stress we did have some nice moments: Lauren got to spend time with a dog (!) and Kristyna has developed a nice morning routine, since she keeps accidentally waking up super early... This episode's main topic is everything related to books. We talk about when we started reading and how our reading habits have changed. Where we get our books from and how that has changed throughout the years. How we lost our love for reading a bit throughout high school when we had a lot of mandatory reading. The reason we read and the different ways in which books add something to our lives. All of it. We talk about all of it. And honestly we could've continued talking about books for another hour. To end the episode Kristyna updated us on the Christmas movies that she's been watching. And how it feels to have finished watching Gilmore Girls (again). We loved recording this episode and we hope you enjoy listening to it, as this is one of our favorite topics. We are slowly running out of energy. We have a lot to do to school, all the assignments, exams, etc and we really need a break. But at the same time, we are trying to enjoy some nice things, such as our cooking class that we finished last week! (Well, not really..) We enjoyed thst very much. Kristýna went to get drinks with the group afterwards but Lauren went home because she is STILL sick. Oh yeah, and she had to go to the hospital. And not to forget, we went to yet another cocnert (Kodaline), unfortunately, the last one of this semester. This time we talked about friendships. Kristýna discovered that there is such a thing as low maintenance friendship and actually has had a couple of them. Making friends is such a weird but natural concept that you don't think about until you grow up, move abroad and get cut off from all of your life long ones. At first, it might seem intimidating but with time you realise, how natural process it is and how cool it is to keep meeting new people. Because every individual person brings something different and special to your life. Or it might be just a passerby, who appeared in your life for a certain reason as well. We both came to the conclusion that you have to treat friendships the same way as romantic or family relationships. And communication is key! This weekly recap covers a lot: We threw a Taylor Swift album release party and forced all our friends to come. (Some were more excited than others...) And Lauren had a great time at the Taylor Swift club night afterwards. We had a lot (and I mean A LOT) of assignments to do and exams to prepare for. We've officially reached that point of the semester. Lauren got sick. Kristyna went to New York. We took another vegan cooking class and went to a James Bay concert. So, all in all, a nice collection of events. In this episode we're gonna talk about the future and what we think (and hope) it holds in store for us. Neither of us are set on one specific plan, but we have a couple of ideas of what we'd like to do after we graduate. Are we gonna do a masters? Are we gonna stay in Spain? Move back to our hometowns? Or move to another country? Find a job? Start a farm? Nobody knows! We end this episode by talking about the latest books we've been reading and giving you an update on our experience watching 'The Circle'. We hope you have a nice week! This past week, we did so many amazing activities. First of all, after a really long time, we had a nice relaxing weekend, which was absolutely needed. But the highlight of it all was going to our first session of cooking classes! Our university offers a short course of vegan cooking and we've decided to try it out. Everybody was super super nice and the food was, of course, delicious. We also give you an update about our law exam, which trust us, you do want to hear! Have you ever had the problem of not wanting to go somewhere but you felt bad because you think you'd dissapoint your friends? Today's topic is all about finding and balancing the thin line between prioritising yourself and sacrificing for others. It is really hard, and we are nowhere near perfect but we found a few tips and tricks that might help you, if you struggle with it like we do. In the book club part, we raved about how much we love the rain (in certain situations) and complained about how we aren't able to find the right time to read while it's raining. It has been really difficult to fit the right day and time window. And lastly, we reflected on our sleeping schedule. We look back at a busy week: A padel tournament (they did not win!), a visit from a friend from home, a Tom Odell Concert, study sessions, a failed exam (?) and even a spa visit. There has been a lot going on and we're updating you on all of it. This episode is the second part of a friend interviewing us. Our friend prepared a bunch of questions for us to answer and games for us to play: This leads to a bunch of different conversations on topics such as going to mars, being in your twenties and the pressure and opportunities that come with it, and what we would say to our past selves. (Just to mention a few.) It's a chaotic collection for sure! And, of course, we also catch you up on what we've been reading and watching lately. Can't forget our "book" club. We hope you enjoy this episode. We had a great time recording with our friend, Estela. We went to Castellon for a weekend, which was amazing but very exhausting. The initial point of the trip was to film a documentary for our university class but in the end, we did so much more. Our friend Sara (it was her hometown) took us to a very traditional event, which she tried to explain to us prior (unsuccessfully unfortunately) and according to Lauren's words, it left us even more confused after seeing it. We spent our last night there on a beach, which was just what we needed. We came back to take economics exam, which went as expected - partially failing but not a big deal. Lastly, we went to a concert of Ludovico Einaudi and we enjoyed it so much that we dedicated the whole third part of the episode to talk about just that. For the main part of the episode, we invited our friend to come on the podcast and interview us! Whenever we get together and talk, the conversation is always really interesting and makes us wonder about different stuff. She prepared a few games and topics to ask us and talk about. It is an episode filled with a lot of laugh, wondering, trying to remember (important) things, etc. Hope it'll maybe make you get into your thoughts as well! As always, we recap the week: These past days included a surprise visit from a friend, a not so successful study session for an economics, and drinks and food with family and friends. For this episode's main topic, we try to answer the simple (but not quite so simple) question of "why are we here?". Why did we decide to leave our hometowns, our families and our friends to study in a foreign country? The truth is, we aren't 100% sure what the answer to this question is ourselves, but in this episode, we try to figure it out. Come along for the ride! And finally, we talk about a new show that we've started watching and that we've been loving. Check it out for yourselves, maybe you'll enjoy it too! In the first part of this episode, we talk about everything that we've done the past week. And to warn you, it was a lot, sports especially. Lauren's mom visiting, picking up the mugs we painted last week and were stoked to see how they turned out, Kristýna's volleyball tryouts and much much more. We also updated our recording gear, we can now hear ourselves and each other through headphones so hopefully the quality of the following episodes will improve a little bit again. This episode is more practical than other ones. We wanted to give you some tips for the week before you leave to go to another country for a longer period of time and also the week after you arrive. There are some things you have to do that you don't maybe think about and it's good to be prepared. We gained these experiences the hard way so we want your experience to be a little bit less stressful. In the last part, we talk about the books we've read the past week. We are so happy we both love reading and can talk about it with each other and also on our podcast. It's a big passion of us. Enjoy! This past week was eventful – but in the best way possible! And we talked all about it in the first part of this episode. We planned an exciting weekend trip to one of our friend's hometowns. Made the most out of a 2 for 1 burger offer. Spent a couple of hours painting mugs and drinking tea. Took some time writing. And so on and so forth. For the main part, we decided to discuss this upcoming semester: What classes are we taking? What are our first impressions? Which challenges can we expect? And which project will be fun? We give you the whole rundown! And finally, we talk about the latest book Lauren read (and loved!) and share our thoughts on the Reality TV Show "Dated & Related", which we got unreasonably invested in over this past week. You're very welcome. We know you really wanted to know all of our opinions on this topic. We hope you enjoy this episode! Have a nice week! We are back! Summer's over now (technically not, because it's still over 30 degrees in Madrid) and we returned to our second home - Madrid. We haven't honestly talked much during summer since we were so busy! But we decided to make up for it by making the first episode all about how we spent our summer, what trips we took but of course we also dig a little bit into how we feel about being back, what it was like having to be parted from your friends again, etc. A couple of updates were made, especially the last part of the episodes. Instead of asking a question we've decided to turn it into a mini book club (well not really) and talk about what we're currently reading or what TV series we're watching. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as we do. The second semester of our Journalism degree is officially over. We managed to pass all of our courses and have been enjoying the first weeks of summer break back in our hometowns. Lauren finally realized that in order to have plans she needs to actually make plans. So, she's been catching up with friends and enjoying being surrounded by lakes and rivers (since Madrid lacks that a bit...). Kristyna's been having a little bit of a tough time, but has still managed to spend a lot of time with friends. She had a late Birthday party, went rollerblading, and even got a new job. In this episode, we wanted to talk about how we experienced the second semester of our studies. We take a look back at all of our classes, our first impressions and how it all developed. We had an interesting collection of classes this semester, with quite different approaches regarding the work load throughout the semester and also the final exam. Of course, we encountered some challenges along the way, but, thankfully, it all worked out in the end. As it usually does. And we've successfully finished the first year of our Journalism studies! It was quite interesting for us to take a look back at these past months and how we experienced them. How we thought each class would be versus how they all actually turned out. We hope you enjoy this episode! Lauren went finally home as well, back to Switzerland! So now the both of us are back in our hometowns, enjoying every second of it. In the beginning of this episode, we raved about the concerts we went to. Lauren saw Seafret and Kristýna was able to squeeze 2 concerts into one single week: Yungblud and Imagine Dragons. From then on, all we've been listening to on repeat are those 3 music artists / bands. This is our second time going home for our school break and it is always something. We had some experiences and expectations from when we went home during Christmas but it turned out to be something completely different. We have to adjust to being alone (in a different sense than what we go through in Spain and we really struggle with it), our eating habits have suffered a little change as well and so on and so forth. The summer has already started and we hope you're enjoying to your fullest!
