This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with Northern Lights directors John Hanson & Rob Nilsson and cast members Susan Lynch & Joe Spano. This conversation was moderated by NYFF62 Revivals programmer Dan Sullivan. An NYFF62 Revivals selection, Northern Lights is currently playing at Film at Lincoln Center, courtesy of Kino Lorber. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/lights Winner of the Camera d'Or at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, the sui generis Northern Lights marks one of the most moving and committed works of political cinema from the late 1970s. Dramatizing the formation of the populist Nonpartisan League in North Dakota in the mid-1910s, Northern Lights captures the plight of immigrant Dakotan farmers as they toil and struggle against the combined forces of industry and finance. Amid this class tension, two young lovers find themselves swept up in the tide. Shot on location (on grain-rich black-and-white 16mm) in the dead of winter and featuring an astonishing cast of non-professional actors, this handmade masterpiece remains a stirring monument to collectivity.

Have you ever felt like health is an endless puzzle—where every piece you find adds more confusion instead of clarity? Each step forward feels like two steps back, leaving you stuck in a cycle of frustration. I've been there, too, in the endless negative loop created by a faulty health story. When you're in this place, it's easy to feel like a victim—like your body has failed you and no system marketed to "fix" you ever works. This mindset traps us in a cycle of confusion and defeat, where problems seem bigger than solutions, and health feels out of reach. I don't want to dramatize this. In fact, this is about stepping away from the drama of health and looking at it through a clearer lens. I understand what it's like to feel stuck and want health but never quite achieve it. What I didn't realize then—and wouldn't have chosen to see—was how much my beliefs and the stories I told myself shaped the outcomes I experienced. Here's the hard truth: many of the struggles we face in health aren't just real problems—they're amplified by the stories we believe. On this episode of the podcast, we are speaking with Dr. Kathryn Wehr, about her new annotated edition of Dorothy Sayers's The Man Born to Be King, a series of 12 radio plays broadcast and published 80 years ago during the Second World War. It is a fascinating conversation of the unique complexities and tensions of adapting the gospels for dramatic production. Among the topics we discuss: Who was Dorothy Sayers? What are some of her works that we should know? The controversy that surrounded the original production of the radio plays and how it drove publicity and affected the final forms of the plays. Which characters were the most challenging to depict and which creative decisions were most successful How Sayers sought to write plays with ecumenical appeal, for the whole church rather than merely for a particular denomination. What Sayers might have to say to creative artists today. We hope the conversation will encourage everyone to pick up a copy of the plays for themselves, or at least to allow this conversation to lift the film of familiarity from the great and true story that is the gospel. The Netflix series The Last Czars and HBO's Chernobyl have (in very different ways) brought Russian & Soviet history to televisions across the world. In this episode, Ben sits down with fellow Russian historians Dr. Philippa Hetherington and Dr. Jonathan Waterlow to discuss their opinions on the two series, what they think they got right, and ways that producers and scholars might benefit most from collaboration on future projects. Philippa, who is a featured scholar in The Last Czars, shares her experience being interviewed, her impression of the show after seeing it, and her work to correct historical errors that viewers identified after release. This episode is a rebroadcast of RTN #141, which originally aired on Sept. 2, 2019. Tragically, Philippa Heatherington passed away on November 5, 2022 after a long fight with cancer. She was a brilliant scholar, an advocate for those living with cancer, and a genuinely delightful human being. You can learn more about her work at PhilippaHeatherington.com. What does drawing out your difficulties in writing do for you? Not much. Here are three disadvantages to be aware of. Listen up, you know you want more! “Long-suffering” writers create a sort of club that denotes if you are a person who doesn't have any of their symbolism, you don't belong. Lacking an oceanside cottage? You can't get in. Do you not own an ancient typewriter? Too bad for you! Such nonsense. You don't have to pander to this kind of rhetoric. It doesn't make sense for you. Gather the tools that you will genuinely need to create productively. Clear your schedule. Get your headspace right. Read books that will make generating content easier. Take classes. Work toward a smoother road. You're living in the dark ages. Come out into the sunshine, sunshine. Today authors are learning about the tools of digital publishing. They are joining writing groups. They are not waiting for the old masters to give them permission into the traditional and elite clubs–they're making their own! Belt and Roadkill: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LQBJ5N3 paperback https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LGNP95Z Belt and Roadkill Is Tale of UN Corruption By China With Dark Comedy, Series Launched Literary Reflection, Book NEW YORK CITY, Nov 12 – What is a novel? How long should it be? How corrupt is the United Nations? What is the line between real world injustice and fiction, black comedy? A just published novella, "Belt and Roadkill," raises these questions. The corruption of the UN, its documented domination by China as evidenced by two recent real-world bribery prosecutions in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York, are the soil or message of the text. But the meta questions about what is a novel(la) is raised by its form and length. (It is available, first on Kindle, here). Earlier this month Parul Sehgal in The New Yorker bemoaned the democratization of literature, or content, by Amazon and Kindle Direct Publishing. But who are the gatekeepers? Who should they be? The author of Belt and Roadkill, years ago, was on the threshold of elite / elitist publishing, summoned to a venerable firm on Union Square in Manhattan and told that if only the actual names of Citigroup's predatory lenders could be dropped, it might be possible to move forward. But aren't public figures open to satire, without danger of libel lawsuits? Aren't those Predatory Benders who foreclose on thousands of homes just targets, like those at the UN who cover up hundreds of rapes by peacekeepers, and ten thousand Haitians killed by cholera, as only two examples? Belt and Roadkill does not mention Haiti, even once. It does, however, name-check Cameroon and Western Sahara, Huawei and the January 6, 2021 insurrection, breach or protest, whatever your politics.

We review the first episode of Impeachment: American Crime Story, and chat about how it feels to have the first major political scandal of our lifetimes dramatized for TV. This Monday episode reacts to a full and diverse weekend of golf offerings, starting with the U.S. Amateur. Andy and Brendan review the revolving door of tv channels that the final visited, the Greaser-Piot match, the limited coverage earlier in the week, and yes, the alternate lines down different venerable Oakmont fairways that got plenty of action on Twitter. At the Wyndham, there's a rant on the overselling of what it now means to *not* make the top 125, as well as some thoughts on the six-man playoff format, Chesson Hadley's push, and Roger Sloan getting family time. In Europe, there are two segments dedicated to Ryann O'Toole facts and Calum Hill facts, which devolves into research on the Western New Mexico University mascot. They close with what turned into arguably the most compelling conclusion of the day, the regular season finish on the KFT, where David Skinns burst through for a win and a Tour card, Austin Smotherman held on for dear life, and Taylor Montgomery got screwed thanks to a well-worn old scheduling gripe.

The way you tell your story matters. We often like to dramatize our story because it justifies our feelings. But adding the drama only adds more emotional weight and heaviness to an already emotional and heavy situation. Your story is already dramatic enough. You don't need to keep adding to it. Today I am going to talk about why we do this, why it's important to recognize it and how to change it.  Join me for a week-long virtual event "Healing the Hallowed Heart". This will be a week dedicated to spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical healing and I am so excited to be talking about how to forgive after betrayal. Father Mike is an actor. Always has been, always will be. He’s also a missionary with a vast array of experiences in Latin America, Asia and Africa.   Turn your dial up and learn about the versatile and spiritually gifted Father Michael Bassano, M.M., who currently works with refugees in a UN-run camp in South Sudan. Follow his exciting and remarkable journey from Chile to Thailand to Tanzania and beyond as a Maryknoll missioner of unshakable faith and calling.   In this deeply moving podcast, the ebullient priest gives his testimony as to how God tugs on us until we answer; how He prepares us for our real calling through everything we do beforehand, and how “…all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)   From his humble days in the Diocese of Syracuse, the small town pastor felt a nudge—no, a shove—to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15). But just how would that happen in the context of his cozy parish?       So, in 1987, he decide to join the ranks of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers—the Catholic Foreign Mission Society—with the understanding that he would return to his duties Stateside after five years.   Well, God had other plans. Moved by the sacrifices of the Church martyrs of El Salvador, he mobilized himself for the poor and voiceless, and remains a Maryknoll missioner to this day.       But, let’s go back to “Act One, Scene One” of this real-life play for a moment.   Some actors are shy in real life; others have a boldness that crosses over from the stage to the street. Father Mike possesses that boldness. His journey with Maryknoll started out with an unannounced visit to the Maryknoll campus, when he asked to see “a priest” and stated his case for apprenticeship. After securing his bishop’s permission, he was assigned as an associate to Chile.   Fear ran through Father Mike’s veins as he disembarked the plane, entering into the dangerous territory of the Pinochet regime. But he wasn’t as afraid for his own safety as much as he was of his perceived inadequacy for the calling that burned within him. “If you’re working with the poor, you must be communist!” he says of the military junta’s perception of him.   During his reign as president and then Supreme Head of the nation, Augusto Pinochet had incarcerated 80,000, tortured tens of thousands and executed 3,095 souls.   Even when teargassed, arrested, and finding himself in the midst of a post-coup volatility that could have resulted in his death, Father Mike sang songs of justice for those who vanished mysteriously, never to return to their families.   He took to the streets, a wandering minstrel of sorts, with guitar, cross and basket in hand to perform the Gospel of Saint Matthew for anyone who would listen. Dramatizing reality was a means of survival for many Chilean youth; it brought healing from growing up in alcoholic homes, witnessing neighbors being tortured and feeling the uncertainly of their future. The tenacity of the human spirit in these “poblanos” astounded the early missioner.   “It's like God had been preparing me for all the theater I did before, to do something as a missioner that would really impact the hearts of people,” said Father Mike.He continues to take his show on the road in other parts of the world where Maryknoll missioners serve.   You won’t find stories like Father Mike’s in any history book or documentary. Listen and learn—as they say—to what a real-life missioner with the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers has to share, because we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface here.

In their most recent work, Loving and Loving, they explore, examine and dramatize the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple from rural Virginia who were arrested in 1958 for the crime of being married. Their decade-long legal struggle resulted in a landmark civil rights case decided in 1967, which upheld their right to live as husband and wife and struck down all remaining state bans on interracial marriage. Beginning in the present day and delving into the historically rich 1950’s – 60’s, Loving and Loving looks at this nearly 50-year old story from a 21st Century perspective, exploring the enduringly complex nature of intimacy, identity, and the impact of the law on our most personal decisions.
