Clarke, and the Making of a MasterpieceThis is the definitive story of the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey, acclaimed today as one of the greatest films ever made, including the inside account of how director Stanley Kubrick and writer Arthur C. Clarke created this cinematic masterpiece. Author Michael Benson explains how 2001 was made, telling the story primarily through the two people most responsible for the film, Kubrick and science fiction legend Arthur C. Clarke. Benson interviewed Clarke many times, and has also spoken at length with Kubrick's widow, Christiane; with visual effects supervisor Doug Trumbull; with Dan Richter, who played 2001's leading man-ape; and many others.A colorful nonfiction narrative packed with memorable characters and remarkable incidents, Space Odyssey provides a 360-degree view of this extraordinary work, tracking the film from Kubrick and Clarke's first meeting in New York in 1964 through its UK production from 1965-1968, during which some of the most complex sets ever made were merged with visual effects so innovative that they scarcely seem dated today. A concluding chapter examines the film's legacy as it grew into it current justifiably exalted status. We can honestly say, that this has been the easiest transition from being back in our home countries to coming back to Madrid for university yet. Which is a huge success! Of course, goodbyes are always difficult, but the days before leaving now contain less crying and settling back into life in Madrid is so much easier and happens way faster. It took us a while to get to this point, but we're so thankful. (And hopefully it only gets better from here on.) For this episode's main topic, we do another semester outlook. It's a tradition at this point! We're starting our first semester of our third year of our Journalism degree (which is insane!) and want to take a look at our classes and talk about our first impressions and expectations. We definitely have a very interesting mix of classes this time around: from Feature Writing, to Investigative Reporting, to Multimedia Communication, ... We can't wait to listen back to this episode in a couple of months and realise that we were wrong about everything and had no idea about what was ahead of us. And of course, we end this episode with our bookclub: Lauren's has finally almost finished all of the books she started reading in May (how impressive!) and Kristyna is still working her way through a really long Margaret Atwood book. Additionally, Lauren has a couple of documentary recommendations: 'One Child Nation' and 'Generation Wealth'. And Kristyna's trying her best to keep up with all the new shows that are currently coming out. And, obviously, we share our songs of the week. (Well Lauren actually decided to change the rules and mention two full albums...) We're really excited to be back and hope you enjoy this episode. Çin'deki her eve girip kadınları muayene eden ebe ordusu, son 30 yılda 400 milyona yakın bebeğin doğumunu kürtaj yoluyla engellemiş.

In this episode, Aimee and Alia are rejoined by Chinese adoptee, Shelley, to discuss their thoughts on the documentary, Found , available on Netflix. Along with the emotions this documentary provoked, they share how Found has impacted their views on DNA testing and the possibilities of them attempting their own birthparent search. They also discuss the importance that documentaries like Found and One Child Nation play in not only helping Chinese adoptees learn more about themselves and their past, but also acting as a tool for non-adoptees to educate themselves. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The HBO Original six-part documentary series Mind Over Murder, directed by Nanfu Wang and produced by Vox Media Studios chronicles the bizarre and psychologically complex story of six individuals who were convicted for the 1985 murder of a beloved 68- year-old grandmother, Helen Wilson, in Beatrice, Nebraska. Despite five of the individuals originally confessing to the crime, the “Beatrice Six” as they became known, were exonerated by DNA evidence in 2009, a turn of events which divided the rural town and incensed the family of Helen Wilson. As the filmmakers track the case from the murder, through investigation, trial, exoneration and two civil suits, shifting perspectives cloud the truth; a stranger-than-fiction tale emerges that raises salient questions about the reliability of confessions and memory in criminal cases. Director Nanfu Wang (Hooligan Sparrow, One Child Nation, In the Same Breath) joins us for a conversation on her own journey to gain the confidence of a community convinced they already knew the truth, uncovering the venality of local government officials, and her ideas about how storytelling can be a way to break through to people traumatized by violence and misinformation. Kelly is joined by Yane as they review First They Killed My Father from 2017 and One Child Nation from 2019. Other political topics discussed after. Episode recorded 3/26/2022.
In her searing Oscar-shortlisted HBO Documentary “In the Same Breath”, award-winning filmmaker Nanfu Wang challenges both the Chinese and U.S. governments' initial responses to the pandemic. As she did in her previous film, the devastating “One Child Nation”, Nanfu relentlessly questions government authority and gives voice to those who insist on telling the truth, even at the risk of heavy personal cost. Ken sat down with Nanfu to talk about this incredibly powerful film, which combines reporting, internet sleuthing and compelling personal narratives to re-examine the critical early period of the pandemic. What if we could roll back the clock and have a “re-do” on the first days and weeks of the pandemic? What if the Chinese government hadn't silenced those who called attention to the first Covid cases? How did incorrect information from some in the U.S. government do us harm? As someone who grew up in China and now calls the U.S. home, Nanfu has an insightful perspective on both countries. Not only does she insist on asking the hard questions, but manages to show us the possibilities for a better world. “In the Same Breath” is now streaming on HBO Max. Hidden Gem: Black Sun

La columna de Juan Pablo Mansilla para Crónica Anunciada para Futurock FM
In the Same Breath is a strikingly original analysis of the early days of the pandemic as it unfolded in China and the United States. Filmmaker Nanfu Wang draws upon multiple sources of footage to study how governments shaped the messaging about coronavirus and how they missed opportunities to limit the virus. Her collaborators include her husband Michael Shade as an editor and Jialing Zhang as one of the producers. Nanfu and Jialing previously appeared on episode #115 to discuss their film One Child Nation about China's extreme efforts to control population growth. Pure Nonfiction host Thom Powers interviews Nanfu about the logistical and emotional challenges of navigating China's censorship. She discusses the lessons she learned making her first film Hooligan Sparrow, about a Chinese dissident, that was her first experience with government pressure.
So this is the final episode of Season Four - which I started back in March and honestly I have no idea where that time has gone. There will be a couple of bonus episodes coming out to coincide with some film releases, but apart from that I'll be on hiatus for a couple of months figuring out and planning for Season Five. But I feel like I'm going out with a bang!! This season has been a real treat - I've spoken to some amazing women and had some really fun but also important conversations and that trend is definitely continuing with this episode in which I spoke to Mandy Chang, who is currently the Commissioning Editor at the BBC's feature documentary strand Storyville. Mandy has been on my radar for several years, I've seen her speak at Sheffield Doc/Fest and have watched many of the films she's commissioned and executive produced and I was incredibly excited when she said yes to being interviewed. I knew it would be one of those interviews where an hour / hour and a half is simply not enough time to ask all the right questions and I'm sure there are plenty of other paths that we could've gone down but what you're about to hear is the conversation that we did have and I found it to be as thoughtful and illuminating as I had hoped. Mandy started out as a freelance filmmaker, producing and directing docs for TV. Her credits include The Mona Lisa Curse, an Emmy and Grierson award-winning polemic that traces the pernicious rise of the art market and The Camera That Changed The World, a portrait of the first portable cameras and the impact they had on filmmaking and filmmakers. Mandy was later Head of Arts at ABC TV, a broadcaster in Australia before joining Storyville in 2017. During her time there she has shepherded many incredible documentaries to our screen, among them are: UNDER THE WIRE, ONE CHILD NATION, COLD CASE HAMMARSKJÖLD, INTO THE STORM, I AM GRETA and the upcoming MISHA AND THE WOLVES. And she has just been announced as the new Global Head of Documentaries at Fremantle where she will spearhead the producer-distributor's growth in high-end factual production. We talked about her filmmaking career and how she sustained that for two decades, as well as how those experiences have informed her approach to commissioning. We discuss how she built on Storyville's legacy whilst also pushing it in new and bold directions, why caretaking is a central part of her commissioning philosophy and what that means and what excites her about the future of documentary. I think Mandy was really generous with her answers and I certainly got a lot from hearing about her career journey, so I hope you do as well.

As part of our week-long series about how the arts are dealing with Covid-19, Eve Jackson speaks to the award-winning, Chinese-born, New York-based filmmaker Nanfu Wang, who won the jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival two years ago for "One Child Nation". She presented her film "In the Same Breath" at this year's virtual festival. It draws parallels between misinformation about the pandemic in China and America. Also on the programme, film critic Lisa Nesselson and film producer Marc Missonnier discuss how film-loving France is continuing to support the industry like never before.
In this regular episode, I fly solo through the films I saw in January. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tenha acesso a conteúdos exclusivos! “One Child Nation,” a documentary about the devastating effects of China's one-child policy, has been nominated for many awards. But director Nanfu Wang says any film buff who has to rely on Chinese media to follow these competitions wouldn't even know her film exists -- it's totally banned in China. Wang tells us about making “One Child Nation,” which started as a personal story and grew into something broader.
