In this episode Dr. Kirstie Oswald walks us step by step through the process of diagnosing and treating Gastric Ulcers. We were surprised at how complex this seemingly straight forward problem actually is and how connected ulcers are to your horses mental health and overall physical health. We JAM PACKED this episode full of detailed information on everything from preventing gastric ulcers, how nutrition plays a factor in gastric ulcers and how other injuries can interact with a horses overall health and cause gastric ulcers (or vice verse). We really dig into the details and get some juicy info about just how us horse owners can kick gastric ulcers to the curb for good (or manage them successfully). We sure do appreciate Dr. Oswald joining us and taking time away from her regular duties as veterinarian with Elm Creek Equine Veterinary Services. CONNECT WITH DR. What's the secret to taking those amazing, jaw dropping images we see of each other cruising through the arena? In this episode we were able to ask photographer, Carey Lee, about how he captures those really great moments with our horses. If you live in Manitoba and compete in rodeo or barrel racing you've probably been photographed by Carey Lee at some point and maybe even bought a photo or two. Carey Lee has also earned his spot as an official photographer for Crossfire Bull Riding. During the summer months he is all over Manitoba photographing equine events and posts hundreds of amazing photos of athletes, both horse and human. We are very lucky to have such an accomplished photographer in our area! You're probably wondering if we asked him for tips on how we can take better photos. We sure did! He gave some helpful suggestions but honestly it had us thinking we're better off on the horse and letting him take the position behind the camera lens. There is a lot of time, effort, and equipment that goes into capturing and editing a fantastic photo. We can't thank Carey Lee enough for joining us on the podcast and giving us some insight into being an equine photographer. Horses are like kids. Just when you think everything is going smoothly they throw a curve ball at you. and more times than not that comes in the form of an unexpected injury or illness. It’s inevitable. Knowing how to handle those dumb situations our horses get into AND keep your cool can save you so much time and stress (for the horse and for you)! On today’s episode we interviewed an expert on Equine First Aid, Kelsey Wood-Steppler from The Wood Ridge Ranch. She talked us through strategies for dealing with these emergency situations. Now she’ll be the first to tell you that preparation is the first key to equine and canine first aid which is why she generously shared what’s in her own First Aid kit. You’ll find the full list below. And it is GOLD. During this episode she also gave us tons of tips and tactical strategies for when disaster strikes. Perfect for us horse moms, dog moms or kid moms that accept that accidents happen and want to feel prepared and ready to take action when disaster strikes. As livestock ladies it's important for us to know about the equipment we need to get the job done. This is that episode! Being mom's with jobs and horses is pretty busy so it hasn't always been easy for us to be consistent podcasters, but it wouldn't be possible at all without our guys that have our back, Brad and Channce. So, it's only fitting that the two guys that are the biggest supporters of the podcast should be the first episode in our second year of podcasting. On this episode of Ride Like a Mother we invited our husbands to step up to the mic and add their voice to the conversation, specifically about farm equipment. Brad is an auctioneer at Grunthal Auction Service where him and his team auction everything from teacups to tractors. Brad is pretty well versed in the ins and outs of used equipment. Channce has been a mechanic for 11 years. Currently he works for Kubota and Versatile. This guy knows a thing or two about keeping your equipment in shape. We asked them both about owning and maintaining horse ranch equipment. We also discussed buying, selling and markets. Happy anniversary to Ride Like a Mother!! Horse breeding can look real glamourous but for those of us who have tried it, we know that there are a lot of challenges involved. Death, injury, illness, dissapointment and waiting can be a very real part of the journey. And when that happens it can be really tough. Mentally and financially. We hope this conversation will help lighten the mental load. Shelby and her family have been breeding horses for years, at one point having over 100 mares on pasture. She has amazing insight into what it takes to raise horses. Brad and I have been breeding horses for 15 years now and have also had our fair share of experience with both the fun times and the struggles. In this episode we shed some light on common (and some not so common) but unfortunate challenges you may come across when raising horses. When those things occur it can be easy to get hard on ourselves, blame ourselves, feel overwhelming guilt and frustration. Although it's important to keep learning and improving your system, no matter how much you try, there will be times when nature takes over and horses come up open or injured, or ill. And it's important to keep reminding yourself that it's part of the process and doesn't mean that your failing or not cut out for it. Keep your head up, focus on the good and get after it. Breeding horses is magic. Never wasting a sunset on a life you don't love. New Music "$20 Dollar Bottle" and the writing process. What a healthy mindset for an artist looks like. What it's like travelling down the road. How he pivoted when he couldn't do live concerts (And the solution is so creative and awesome!). It was a pleasure listening to this introspective cowboy as he shared how he is building a life he loves with his people! Would you notice if your horse had Kissing Spine? Chantal did but was only able to diagnose it because she was persistent & followed her intuition. It's one of those issues that can be easily misinterpreted. The signs can be subtle but when you ride your horse often enough you can tell when something is off. Just like Chantal did. In this episode she explains her and Chargers journey through the Kissing Spine diagnosis. This is part 2 of a 3 part series in which we are interviewing Vet, Horse Owner and Rehabilitation Expert on their experience with Kissing Spine. IN PART 1: of the series we interview Dr. Chris Bell of Elders Equine about what Kissing Spine is, diagnosis, surgery and recovery. We've all been there... We're riding our horse and somethings not quite right but you can't quite pin point it. Maybe its that your fire breathing dragon turns a barrel and instead of the usual flaming run you just get a a little puff of smoke. Or maybe they're getting a little cinchy. Could it be Kissing Spine? In this 3 part series we are interviewing Vet, Horse Owner and Rehabilitation Expert on their experience with Kissing Spine. This ailment affects more horses than one might expect and has a surprisingly quick turnaround and recovery rate after surgery. Which is a great reason to know a bit about it as a competitive rider (in any field). IN PART 1: of the series we interview Dr. Chris Bell of Elders Equine about what Kissing Spine is, diagnosis, surgery and recovery. IN PART 2: of the series we interview Chantal Kesslering about her horse Charger who was treated for Kissing Spine. We discuss how she noticed a problem, the steps she took, the rehab process and plans for Charger's future. Are you wondering if you actually need a farm website? Or maybe you have one and your wondering what the point of it is? This episode is for you! In my experience, two of the biggest hurdles for small farmers and business owners that want to build a website is that they don't get it done and launched. Or they don't put it to work and actually USE it. What do I mean by that? I mean the website has no purpose. I think of websites as a hub for your business online. It can be a tool to lead people to your offers and turn them into paying customers. But what I see all too often is a website full of crickets. A great website that's going to work for you is one that attracts the eyeballs of the people that really want what you have to offer! You don't just want them to land on your website, you want them to TAKE ACTION: Read further.Subscribe.Order.Purchase.Make an Appointment.Give you a Call.Ask you about your service.or some combination of the above. It's our job, as business owners, to create a path for our customers to find us online and take action. You may be able to make an initial connection with them on your social media but it's your searchable long-form content that really makes it easy for people to seek you out. Rather than you running on the social media hamster wheel. All that said, here are 5 questions you should ask yourself when building your farm, ranch or equine biz website: 1. Do you need a website? What is its purpose? 2. How will people find your website? 3. What components do you need in your website so you can choose the right platform for you. (online store, blog, calendar, subscribe buttons etc) 4. What action do you want your customers to take? 5. What is your VIBE? How do you want people to feel when they hit your website? 6. How will you keep your website active and fresh? Listen to the episode to hear my answer to each of these questions! When you're considering the health of your horse, your kids or yourself, hydration is the first place to start. It's the most foundational health strategy there is. Without water we can't think properly, can't get the nutrition from our food, the function of our heart and lungs are restricted, our muscles can't move properly, our nerves and impulses are impacted. Basically, being dehydrated makes everything harder: your horse can't perform, your kids can't be their happy selves and you will have less energy. Not fun for anyone! In today's episode we're talking about: ~ Benefits of being well hydrated (which is more than just the amount of water you drink)~ Preventing dehydration~ Defining some important terms~ Tips and hacks to make getting hydrated easier If you have a topic or show idea for future episodes PLEASE EMAIL: ridelikeamother@gmail.com Connect with us on: INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/ride.likeamother/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ridelikeamother YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYpumCi9VLrWC2ZfSuLr5pA WEBSITE: https://ride-like-a-mother.castos.com Article regarding Magnesium and Salt improving bowel movements and quality of life. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5334415/ The effects of fluid deprivation on energy and mood. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3553795/ Hydration and weightloss https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19661958/ Hydration in horses https://extension.psu.edu/how-much-drinking-water-does-your-horse-need Hydroplex fact sheet https://static.plexusworldwide.com/cdn/hydroplex-infosheet-en-ca.pdf
