Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Manudy Thursday – 03/28/2024 Tonight, I am going to wash at least one foot symbolizing Jesus washing his disciples' feet. Thus, it is important for us to understand at least partially why Jesus may have washed his disciples' feet. This is not a practice at all churches on this night. Many people say, “I don't want people seeing my feet”. I had never done it until I went to Ishpeming a few years ago. Tonight, I will invite anyone who wants to come up. Jesus' disciples were not too sure about Jesus washing their feet either as it was not really appropriate for a Teacher, their leader to wash their feet. It was the custom to wash one's feet when coming into a home as they normally wore sandals, and their feet were dirty. In some homes there were servants who did this. This whole scene took place before the Passover, Jesus knew his hour had come to soon depart from this world and go back to his father. There was a lot going on in that room and only Jesus knew all of it. He knew Judas was going to hand him over to the Roman authorities. The other disciples thought they were just having a nice meal with their teacher. I wonder if they may have thought more was going on when Jesus took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself, poured water into a basin and began to wash their feet? Most of them were quiet and maybe in shock, except Peter. It seems Peter was always filled with anxiety and had to say something. So, when Jesus came to Peter, Peter asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus said, “You do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand.” At first Peter spoke what the other disciples may have been thinking, “Lord, you will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you will have no share or part of me.” Jesus knew that Peter did not understand. The only other time that the word wash is used in the Gospel of John is in the story of the healing of the blind man. He washed in the pool of Siloam and his sight was restored. This gave the man more of an ability to see Jesus, to recognize who Jesus was and is. Thus, this is not really about sin, doing wrong as we often define it. In John, sin is about not believing. Remember Judas is reclining at this table and Jesus washed his feet too, even though Jesus knew that Judas would be handing him over to the Roman authorities. Jesus stated that not everyone was clean and of course he was speaking about Judas. Judas' uncleanness is about not believing. Could Jesus washing of his disciples' feet be about being better able to see who Jesus was and is? Jesus put his outer robe back on and returned to the table. He still had more to teach them, to help them understand what he had done. Think about it, Jesus says, if I am your Lord and teacher and have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. He said, “I have set you an example.” I wonder if they had ever washed each other's feet, let alone the one who is not clean. Don't you think they were wondering which person was unclean? They had been travelling with Jesus for a few years now and one of them may have chosen not to follow Jesus, to believe that Jesus is the Messiah. I go back to the question, “Do you know what I have done for you? In the paraphrase of the Bible, the Message we hear Jesus saying, “I am only pointing out the obvious, A servant is not ranked above the master; an employee doesn't give orders to the employer. If you understand what I am telling you, act like it—and live a blessed life.” So then, Jesus may be asking us tonight, who is your master?, who is your employer? If Jesus is our master, how are we carrying out this example that Jesus has set in the humbleness of washing their feet. It was totally out of the norm for Jesus, their leader to wash his disciple's feet including the one who would hand him over. This washing of the feet was Jesus' example of loving one another. In a sense it is not a brand new commandment, as the ten commandments have been broken down to two, love the Lord your God and your neighbor as yourself. Maybe one thing that is new is that here was God in Jesus Christ carrying out this loving act of washing their feet in person. The disciples probably did not realize until later that God had washed their feet. Of course, I am not God, but tonight we wash feet to remind us that God humbled Godself to come to earth for each person out of love. Acts of love in reality are about washing feet. This symbolic act reminds us what Jesus is asking of us, as to how to live in community, loving one another, washing each other's feet. As we love one another, we are better able to see Jesus in each other. But it doesn't only mean the people in this beloved community, but in the world. For God so loved, that God came to earth in human form, in Jesus. God sent Jesus into the world not to condemn it, but to love it. Unfortunately, we see a great deal of condemnation and not love. If Jesus did not come into the world to condemn, then that is not we are commanded to do. We are reminded tonight by Jesus' example that we are called to love one another as we are loved. This is a bit overwhelming as there are people we do not want to love. In the months to come we are going to be challenged more and more by Christians to condemn others and we may feel condemnation ourselves. Tonight, we are reminded of Jesus' example of how to love. It doesn't mean being a doormat, but it does mean speaking the truth in love. He has shown us what this sacrificial, humbling love is about and he says to each us, if you try and follow my example by washing others' feet, people will know that you are my disciples, and the world will be loved.
We set out to make a Michigan Bucket List show and ended up with a guest list that is all over the map and book-ended by two well-known names, one in the travel industry, and one for abiding while creating an incredible theatrical destination for all to enjoy. We were pleased as punch to confirm an interview with Pauline Frommer. Yes, of that Frommer family, the kind of kings of travel publications. We were interested to hear some of her experiences around Michigan as a travel expert, and what she sees trending in the next few years. She did not disappoint. Frommer is the Co-President of FrommerMedia, Editorial Director of Frommer's Guidebooks, author of the best-selling "Frommer's EasyGuide to New York City" and "Frommer's New York City Day by Day", and co-host of "The Travel Show" You see what I'm saying? This woman is an expert. Then we turn closer to home, and visit with our friend, and radio legend, Mary Ellen Murphy. This award-winning DJ hosts The Morning Show on WGHN in Grand Haven. Passionate about the Tri-Cities region, which also includes Spring Lake and Ferrysburg, Mary Ellen shares her thoughts on 'beach time' plus what she loves about this area. One thing I love about Mary Ellen is her fantastic studio at WGHN, which looks directly out over the Channel and boardwalk in GH. You can see what she sees on their live camera link here. Pro beach-going move: check out their OTHER cam for live beach conditions, so you know before you go.An old friend then calls in, all the way from Savannah Georgia. We first met Matt DeWitt at the bar he used to own in Ishpeming, a little gem of a spot called Brogie's that served one hell of a Bloody Mary. May have been named a top glass by a couple of food writers we know. Anywho, Matt has been having quite an adventure the last few years, working for that crazy baseball team, the Savannah Bananas. We get to hear all about what that's been like, plus what he misses most about the Upper Peninsula. It may, or may not, be a certain sausage. EDIT: I almost forgot! Matt and his wife EV have started a new website, crabrankoons.com. They rank crab rangoons and all derivatives. Yes, you cannot make this up. These are the people we love at Behind the Mitten. Finally our last interview, and yes, it's a big one. Jeff Daniels took time to chat with little old us about his incredible Purple Rose Theatre."Founded in 1991 by acclaimed actor and Chelsea native Jeff Daniels, The Purple Rose Theatre Company is a creative home for theatre artists to define our collective Midwestern voice. It is a place for emerging talent and seasoned professionals to learn more about and to practice their craft; a place for patrons of the arts to laugh, cry, and perhaps even learn something new," according to their website. We learned it is so much more than that, not just to Daniels, but to the Chelsea community that has been truly transformed by its presence over the last thirty years. Daniels' passion for theatre and acting is pretty evident, but what I found most interesting is that The Purple Rose focuses on laughter, the best medicine, and developing hilarious plays from the ground up, all to bring some much-needed joy to our world. How awesome is that?Their newest play had me giggling just reading the summary. Directed by Rhiannon Raglan, and written by David MacGregor, "The Anti Christ Cometh" premiers to the world on March 22 and runs at the theatre through May 25. "The Antichrist Cometh is a comedy about a happily married man who discovers that he might be the Antichrist. Will he be able to enjoy a small dinner party with his loving wife, former college roommate, and his roommate's devoutly religious fiancée? Or will their home-cooked meal usher in the Apocalypse?"Daniels goes a little bit deeper with us, and let me say, this sounds like quite the dinner party, and one you don't want to miss. Remember, it's a comedy! Chelsea is a charming, lively downtown with great restaurants and shopping, so when you go to a show, plan on making a day of it.It was a pleasure talking with Mr. Daniels, who at the end of the day, is just another Michigander like the rest of us. It's his passion for this project, for the Purple Rose and all that it might mean, that sets him apart. We salute his years of hard work building this Michigan gem. Daniels is also a big Lions fan and attended a few games this year, so you know we had to ask him about that. Who could we possibly have on the show next week? Who knows! But stay tuned to Behind the Mitten to find out!Follow John and Amy:Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitter at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

Season 4: Episode 1--The UP Notable Book Club presents author Phyllis Michael Wong speaking about her book We Kept Our Towns Going: The Gossard Girls of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Crystal Falls Community District Library in partnership with the U.P. Publishers & Authors Association (UPPAA) presents author events with winners of the UP Notable Book List. For more information please visit the links below www.UPPAA.org www.UPNotable.com https://msupress.org/9781611864205/we-kept-our-towns-going/ Phyllis Michael Wong, a native of the San Francisco Bay area, would follow her father's sage advice of “listen, talk little, listen” in her roles as a historian; educator, including as a writing instructor and director of online learning; and 30-year member of the university-level academic world, including as First Lady at Northern Michigan University (2004-12) and San Francisco State University (2012-19). Among her favorite First Lady accomplishments is co-founding a One Book, One Community county-wide reading program at NMU. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is known for its natural beauty and severe winters, as well as the mines and forests where men labored to feed industrial factories elsewhere in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But there were factories in the Upper Peninsula, too, and women who worked in them. Phyllis Michael Wong tells the stories of the Gossard Girls, women who sewed corsets and bras at factories in Ishpeming and Gwinn from the early twentieth century to the 1970s. As the Upper Peninsula's mines became increasingly exhausted and its stands of timber further depleted, the Gossard Girls' income sustained both their families and the local economy. During this time the workers showed their political and economic strength, including a successful four-month strike in the 1940s that capped an eight-year struggle to unionize. Drawing on dozens of interviews with the surviving workers and their families, this book highlights the daily challenges and joys of these mostly first- and second-generation immigrant women. It also illuminates the way the Gossard Girls navigated shifting ideas of what single and married women could and should do as workers and citizens. From cutting cloth and distributing materials to getting paid and having fun, Wong gives us a rare ground-level view of piecework in a clothing factory from the women on the sewing room floor.

MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Houston Astros 7, Detroit Tigers 0 Chicago Cubs 5, New York Mets 2 White Sox were off Astros 7, Tigers 0 – Valdez pitches 1st shutout, Astros blank Tigers 7-0 Framber Valdez pitched his first career shutout and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 7-0. Valdez posted his 24th straight quality start, tying Jacob DeGrom in 2018 for the longest single-season streak. He gave up six hits and struck out eight with one walk. The Tigers were shut out for the second day in a row and club-record 21st time this season, tying them with the 1973 New York Yankees and 1976 Chicago White Sox for most by a team with a designated hitter. Jeremy Pena had three hits for the Astros and scored twice. Cubs 5, Mets 2 – Cubs hound Bassitt, beat NL East-leading Mets 5-2 Chris Bassitt had his shortest start in three months, failing to get through the fourth inning as the NL East-leading New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2. The Mets had won each of Bassitt’s last eight starts, a span in which he had a 2.24 ERA. But the right-hander gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings — his quickest exit since he lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings against San Diego on July 8. Rafael Ortega and Zach McKinstry homered for the Cubs. The Mets stranded 10 runners — including seven over the first six innings against rookie Javier Assad, who allowed five hits in earning the first victory of his career. Tonight Houston (Brown 1-0) at Detroit (Hutchison 2-7), 6:40 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:20 Chicago Cubs (Sampson 1-5) at N.Y. Mets (deGrom 5-1), 7:10 p.m. Colorado (Kuhl 6-8) at Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-9), 8:10 p.m. NFL – National Football League – Week 1 Yesterday Seattle Seahawks 17, Denver Broncos 16 Seahawks 17, Broncos 16 – Seahawks survive Wilson’s return, edge Broncos on missed FG Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes, Denver fumbled twice at the 1-yard line in the second half, and the Seahawks beat the Broncos 17-16 in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left and the Seahawks escaped with another wild victory involving Wilson at quarterback. Except this time Wilson was the opponent and there will be plenty of questions about Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett’s late-game clock management and decisions in his first game. Denver faced fourth-and-5 at the Seattle 46 and had three timeouts left, but the Broncos ran significant time off the clock before Hackett called timeout and decided to have McManus try the long field goal. NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner expected to miss season with injury Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will need surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman says Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall on Saturday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California. NCAAFB – Narduzzi mum on status of injured Pitt QBs Slovis, Patti No. 23 Pittsburgh is dealing with uncertainty at quarterback as the Panthers prepare for a road trip to Western Michigan. Starter Kedon Slovis left last week’s overtime loss to Tennessee with an undisclosed injury. Backup Nick Patti injured his left leg early in the fourth quarter but had limited mobility. Head coach Pat Narduzzi offered no update on the status of either quarterback. Dartmouth transfer Derek Kyler and redshirt freshman Nate Yarnell have been competing to be third on the depth chart behind Slovis and Patti. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Tonight Connecticut Sun at Las Vegas Aces, 9:00 p.m. (LV leads 1-0) WNBA – Sun beaming with confidence despite loss to Aces in Game 1 The Connecticut Sun might be down one game in the WNBA Finals after losing their first series opener of the postseason, but they haven’t lost confidence thanks to a stringent defensive effort in Game 1. The Sun did what they hoped to do in by holding the league’s No. 1 offense well below their season average. The top-seeded Las Vegas Aces averaged a league-best 90.4 points per game during the regular season and were scoring a playoff-best 92.3 per contest heading into the finals. Sunday, the Sun held Las Vegas to its lowest point total of the postseason in the 67-64 loss. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is known for its natural beauty and severe winters, as well as the mines and forests where men labored to feed industrial factories elsewhere in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But there were factories in the Upper Peninsula, too, and women who worked in them. In We Kept Our Towns Going, Phyllis Michael Wong tells the stories of the Gossard Girls, women who sewed corsets and bras at factories in Ishpeming and Gwinn from the early twentieth century all the way into the 1970s. PHYLLIS MICHAEL WONG has held roles as a historian, an educator, and thirty-year member of the university level academic world, including as First Lady at Northern Michigan University (2004–12) and San Francisco State University (2012–19). We Kept Our Towns Going: The Gossard Girls of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is available at msupress.org and other fine booksellers. Phyllis will be speaking in Gwinn, Michigan, on April 12. On April 13 at 6:30 PM at the Marquette Regional History Center in Marquette, Michigan. On Thursday, April 14, in the afternoon at Northern Michigan University. Like most of the time do I not know what will happen in the recording. I have no manuscript. I let GOD's Kingdom take over my recording and this time did I get a male visitation and he made me make a PRAY and it was a pattern of pray for you to use. The visitor was Frank Arthur Burling, born 1882 in Ishpeming, Marquette, Michigan, USA ... one of my cousins in USA
