Today on Too Opinionated, The Other Stuff, a powerful new short film by writer and director Bernard Gray. In The Other Stuff, the central theme revolves around the trauma men hold and their intimate internal battles to confront it. The film offers an honest exploration of how Black men, especially those from environments of crime, straddle the paths of good and evil as they attempt to transition into healthier, more fulfilling lives. The film follows Winston played by Dwain Murphy (CROSS, DIGGSTOWN), a 30-year-old Black man, and Shannon played by Golden Madison (CROSS, LAW & ORDER TORONTO: CRIMINAL INTENT) who embark on a journey of self-discovery through couples therapy before preparing to start a family. However, their journey takes an unexpected and intense turn when Winston's suppressed childhood trauma surfaces. Under immense emotional strain, Winston confronts his uncle—the source of his abuse—in an effort to find healing and closure. The film highlights the critical role of therapy in helping men face their pain and work through the deep emotional scars that often remain buried. “The Other Stuff sheds light on the generational trauma and emotional friction that men, especially Black men, face in their daily lives. As a reflection of my personal journey with therapy, the film explores how men are often conditioned to suppress their pain and avoid seeking help, leading to a damaging cycle of silence,” said Bernard Gray. “As men, we are often conditioned to suppress our pain, to "be strong" in ways that ultimately do more harm than good. Through Winston's story, I aim to challenge this narrative and highlight the power of confronting trauma and the healing that therapy can bring. This film was born out of a deep desire to explore these issues openly and authentically. It is not just a film about trauma—it's about the emotional barriers we place around ourselves and the internal struggles we face when we try to break free of them. Now, more than ever, we need open conversations about mental health, and connect with audiences on this deeply human issue.”   Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

The conversation that Richard and I had was remarkable. I am super excited for Richard and his career path. He is doing such a great job with everything he has done so far. Richard Chevolleau is a native of Kingston, Jamaica. The multi-talented artist has honed his career over the years by living and working in New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver Calgary, Ottawa, and Toronto, where he currently resides. Richard, a Canadian Gemini and Actra award winning actor, is going to camera summer 2024 on his latest short film, “Marvelous Marvin.” Chevolleau brings his director/writer/producer skills to the table for the project. “Marvelous Marvin” is produced by Three Finger Film Productions Inc. Chevolleau's production company, executive produced by Richard Fagon & Angie Reid. The film stars Knyght Darius Jack, (Accused, Blues Clues, Grayson's Encounter) Angie Reid (Coroner, Slip, Promise Me) Shanice Banton (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Murdoch Mysteries, Lifetme's Her Stolen Past) and actor Michael Brown (Four Brothers, Hudson & Rex, Diggstown). Chevolleau's sensitive and heartwarming film is a coming-of-age drama. “Marvelous Marvin” follows the journey of quiet ten-year-old Marvin Marvellus, who lives in a small rural town. Marvin has caught the wrath of the schoolyard bully, Tiny, and endures daily bullying from the boy. Marvin feels defeated and helpless until one day he discovers his father's vintage superhero comics. He finds inspiration in the comic book heroes, leading him to believe that he can become a real-life superhero. He wears a make-shift cape and calls himself Marvelous Marvin. But, even with the name change and cape, Marvin realizes that defeating his bully isn't that simple. He finally confronts his tormentor, and by standing up to him, Marvin discovers that courage comes from within if you believe in yourself. Being a passionate and character focused actor, it's no surprise that Chevolleau will educate and inspire us with “Marvelous Marvin.” Chevolleau pays attention to his craft and knows you can not stay quiet, and every day is a journey. By directing, writing, and producing projects, Chevolleau makes sure his work is heard on his terms in the stories and characters he creates. Along with “Marvelous Marvin” Chevolleau has a slate of projects to come. Marvelous Marvin delivers a powerful message about the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of inner strength in the face of adversity.” Richard Chevolleau, the actor is currently in pre-production as the creator, writer & producer on the upcoming feature film, "STINKY: THE NILO GOODMAN STORY". Richard is the actor and director known for Narc (2002), Earth: Final Conflict (1997), and Four Brothers (2005). Today on Too Opinionated we talk with director Tommy Stovall and producer Mark Sterling about their new film Condition of Return. The drama, directed by Tommy Stovall from a script by John Spare, stars AnnaLynne McCord (68 Kill, 90210), Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, God's Not Dead), Natasha Henstridge (Species, Diggstown), and James Russo (Django Unchained, Not a Stranger). At the heart of Condition of Return is a question: what happens if you get what you wished for? As Eve explores the answer, she encounters supernatural elements that are grounded in realism. The Devil, with whom Eve makes a deal to reclaim her life, is disguised as an actual person, as is God. The supernatural is implied, allowing viewers to find their own meaning and answers to the film's questions. Much of the enthusiastic reception to Condition of Return at the 2023 Sedona International Film Festival centered on the work of McCord and Cain, who plays psychoanalyst Dr. Donald Thomas. In a police station breakroom, Dr. Thomas interviews Eve, trying to determine her fitness to stand trial. Each manipulates the other into revealing their secrets, scenes that were praised for their tension and subtlety. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

My guest on this episode is Lynn Coady. Lynn is the author of eight books, including the novel The Antagonist, which was shortlisted for the 2011 Giller Prize, and the short-story collection Hellgoing, which won the Giller Prize in 2013. Her most recent novel novel is Watching You Without Me, which was published by House of Anansi  2019 and Knopf US in 2020.   Publishers Weekly said that Watching You Without Me “stands out for its incisive, bleakly humorous look at gullibility and the complexities of guilt.”   Lynn is also an accomplished TV writer who has worked on shows like Diggstown and Orphan Black.   Lynn and I talk about how winning the Giller did, and didn't, change her career and her perspective on her own writing, how writing for TV has become her main creative outlet, and is in many ways a healthier and more rewarding one, and why she isn't 100% sure she will ever write another novel. We also talk very, very briefly about the scandal that her book Hellgoing played a very minor part in.   Lynn Coady: lynncoady.com Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. She's probably best known for being in recurring roles on Diggstown and Kung Fu, but she also played the narcissistic boss, Ingrid Jordan, in the romantic comedy Lease on Love. She has several other credits to her name including the upcoming short film The Park, where Dorren not only acts in it but also writes, produces, and directs. We talk to her about that experience as well as several of her other roles, how classical piano has helped her acting, thoughts on more representational roles and stories, the importance of Diggstown and Kung Fu, learning American Sign Language, the power of making mistakes, and so much more. Dorren Lee recently joined host Elias in the cave! You can see Dorren as Yuen Oye for the third season Kung Fu on The CW. Lee's character Yuen is the leader of the Wan Zai and rival to character Daniel Yan played by Terry Chen. In this interview, Dorren Lee shares details about the new season of "Kung Fu," including what to expect and where to watch the show. The CW's "Kung Fu" is a reimagining of the 1970s series and is set in the present day with a female in the lead role. The new version has been lauded for being the first network drama with a predominantly Asian American cast. Born in Taipei but raised in Canada, Dorren also has a recurring role on season 4 of CBC's highly acclaimed authentic legal drama "Diggstown". "Diggstown" is a powerful series that highlights the very real inequities that exist in the Canadian legal system and has never shied away from delving into issues of class, race, and gender. BET+ aired season 3 in the US and may pick up season 4 in 2023. This is part two of our two-part episode with Floyd Kane, the creator, showrunner and executive producer of Diggstown. Diggstown is an authentic legal drama that highlights the very real inequities that exist in the Canadian legal system and has never shied away from delving into issues of class, race, and gender, even changing policy in the process. For example, after years of lobbying, last season's birth alert storyline helped to call enough attention to the issue that a few weeks following the broadcast, the province of Nova Scotia dropped the controversial practice; one of the last Canadian provinces to do so.Throughout our conversation, Kane shares why he created Diggstown and what he hopes we pull from it, the complexities of Marcie Diggs and her fellow castmates, and his thoughts on Canada's media landscape for Black entertainment professionals. We even pan the idea of a Canadian House of Cards with a Black male lead…Be sure to watch Season 4, available now on CBC and CBC Gem.-- Special thanks to Fido Mobile for their financial contribution, which enables us to reach more people than ever before.Music provided by Toronto's very own, B.ONLOCATION. The Mikes are a couple of conmen placing a multimillion dollar bet on a boxing match for the ownership of a town...nope, wait...I was thinking of https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000249/?ref_=tt_ov_st (James Woods) and https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001283/?ref_=tt_ov_st (Louis Gossett Jr.) in the 1992 film, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104107/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 (Diggstown). In the film, just released from prison, smooth-talking con man Gabriel Caine (Woods) and his partner in crime, Fitz (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001624/?ref_=tt_cl_t_4 (Oliver Platt)), travel to a town named Diggstown. Upon arriving, Fitz and Caine bet the wealthiest resident, John Gillon (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001136/?ref_=tt_ov_st (Bruce Dern)), that they know a guy who can beat Diggstown's 10 best boxers in one day. After Caine reels in "Honey" Roy Palmer (Gossett Jr.), an ex-professional boxer and old friend, the grift is on. Join Mike Butler and Mike Field as they discuss what works in this conman film; namely the relationship between Caine and Palmer as they execute their plan to win this ridiculously long boxing match. Their chemistry is on full display in this film. Dern likewise plays a great villain in Gillon, a conman of a different ilk. The Mikes also discuss why the film works despite some of the contrivances, that are so often found in heist/con films, as well as well as what doesn't work in the film. In today's episode Sarah Taylor sit down with Kimberlee McTaggart, CCE. Kimberlee has been working in the Canadian film industry for over 30 years. She graduated from York University with a BFA in film, where she won the Dean's Prize for Excellence and a national prize from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and TV. More importantly, she met a bunch of cool people who inspired her then and continue to do so today. Despite spending her university years in Toronto, a city she loves, she was immediately drawn back to her home province of Nova Scotia where she has carved out a varied and successful career. Kimberlee produced, directed, and/or edited several award-winning documentaries before beginning to work exclusively in post production in 1994. She also began to work exclusively on non-linear systems, glad to leave the Moviolas and Steenbecks behind! Kimberlee has edited several dramatic series such as Lexx, Gullages, Made in Canada, This Hour has 22 Minutes, Call Me Fitz, Studio Black, Seed, Pure and Diggstown. Her work on the Call Me Fitz pilot brought her one of the last Gemini Awards. She was also nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for her work on both Call Me Fitz and Seed, as well as the feature film Blackbird. Kim took a break from editing for a few years to run a production company where she and her business partner produced several documentaries and two documentary series. She also worked as a business affairs consultant for other companies during this time, and executive produced several short dramatic films. And now, after being back in the editor's chair for 10 years, she is dipping her toes back in to the producing waters, beginning with the award-winning short film Pearls. In addition to serving on the Board of the CCE, Kimberlee serves as the Chair of Women in Film and Television – Atlantic as well as the Editing Caucus Representative of the Atlantic Regional Council of the DGC.

I first met film and television producer, Karen Wentzell when she spoke on a Women in Film & Television (WIFT-Atlantic) panel. I was struck by her poise, insight and generosity in sharing her knowledge. She is behind such critically acclaimed hits as the comedy series Seed, the history-making CBC series Diggstown and of course the show that changed the landscape of Canadian television-Trailer Park Boys. Golden Nuggets: •Understand you are in the room for a reason. You have a voice. Use it. Be heard. •”Hearing a good story is like taking a drug.” •”No one wants to see you fail.” •”Our film crews here are among the best in the world.” •Tune in to find out what she had to say about working on the groundbreaking series, Trailer Park Boys. •Find out about a little known (and very cool!) surfing story that has been uncovered as a result of the work on Diggstown. Academy award winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. joins us to talk about his life story in film, stage, and screen. Best known for his Oscar winning performance in the movie An Officer and a Gentleman, he also has a wonderful memoir called An Actor and a Gentleman. Born May 27, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, Lou has a flair for projecting quiet authority and has scored well personally in a string of diverse and occasionally challenging roles. The aspiring actor caught a break at his first Broadway audition for “Take A Giant Step” (1953), where, beating out 400 other candidates, the then 16-year-old landed the lead. His acting career soon flourished and his work in the stage and film versions of the groundbreaking drama about African-American family life in Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” (1961) proved a watershed. This led to numerous appearances on network series in the 1960s and 70s culminating in 1977, when he picked up an Emmy for his eloquent portrayal of Fiddler in the landmark ABC miniseries “Roots”. Meanwhile, his big screen reputation grew with critically acclaimed work in such comedies as “The Landlord” (1970) ”The Skin Game”(1971) with James Garner, “Travels with My Aunt” (1972) and the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning drama “The River Niger” (1975). A riveting performance as a drug-dealing cutthroat stalking Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset in “The Deep” (1977) catapulted him to wider popularity, but the tough by-the-book drill sergeant in “An Officer and a Gentleman” (1982) won him a Best Supporting Oscar that consolidated his place in the Hollywood hierarchy. Following his Oscar, he made numerous big screen and television appearances ,being singled out for his work as Egyptian president Anwar Sadat in “Sadat”(1983), the sci-fi adventure “Enemy Mine” (1985) where his lizard-like makeup won kudos, and in the action adventure series “Iron Eagle” (1985,1986,1992,1995) which introduced him to a whole new generation of moviegoers. Still going strong, Lou’s trendsetting bald head and imposing six-foot-four physique served him well in “Diggstown” (1991) where he played a down-and-out boxer, a heroic headmaster in “Toy Soldiers” (1991). Lou’s well thought out and nuanced performances also managed to give credibility to socially themed projects such as “To Dance with Olivia” (1997), and the critically acclaimed “Jasper, Texas” (2003) The recipient of every known acting accolade, including multiple Golden Globes, Emmys, and People’s Choice Awards, Lou’s performance has connected him with his fans on a global scale.  Organizations such as the NAACP, CARE, and the United States Armed Forces have used his likeness to add validity and integrity to their causes. Recently, Lou was the new lead on the popular science fiction series “Stargate SG-1” introducing him to a new generation of fans worldwide.  Lou has also developed the Eracism Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at creating entertainment that helps bring awareness and education to issues such as racism, ignorance, and societal apathy. Content Warning: Diggstown contains overt themes of racism, violence and brutal deaths of people of color, and is headlined by James Woods. Woods has been accused in relation to the #MeToo movement. The year is 1992 and the sport of boxing is enjoying a heyday in the United States. Director Michael Ritchie would take a stab at some of that boxing success, after a string of other sports films including The Bad News Bears. While not a hugely successful film, and panned by critics as being derivative; Matt and Trevor make the case that a fresh watch in 2019 isn't a wholly unwelcome thing. With an all-star cast including Louis Gossett Jr., Heather Graham, Oliver Platte, Tex Cobb, and Jim Caviezal; the crackling dialogue and the Sting-like grits elevate this beyond any simple boxing movie.

Diggstown delivers the ultimate sleight-of-hand hustle to the viewer, by tricking everyone into thinking this is a great "con-job" movie. Look over here, guys and don't pay attention to the paper-thin plot and how the big con is just betting on unsanctioned boxing. Let's just get this out of the way - this isn't a TERRIBLE movie, but it's pretty crummy stacked next to how good its telling us it is. The whole thing is a giant ruse. Maybe someone can take that as a sign of how well edited it is, but we can't. Our job is to breakdown stories and judge them and this story is ludicrously empty - it's borderline "idiot plot" except one of the requirements is that just ONE person has to show a sign of intelligence to prevent the whole movie - but even if there was one person who could show such intelligence wouldn't prevent anything BECAUSE NOTHING HAPPENS! The plot is so thin it can be put to this: A retired professional boxer gets put into a bet to fight 10 men, one after the other. Actually that sounds alright. Well what actually happens is that he only fights one boxer and 9 townies in an underground boxing ring where the rules sometimes matter and other times don't, fights 5 men in a row on separate days, to the backdrop of two guys betting on how much they can cheat each other. So the only plot is a guy beats up townies and his old boxing nemesis. There's no great con, guys. James Woods' Caine is NOT Danny Ocean or even Bret Maverick. He just cheats at boxing - the least noble thing one can do. He cheats at underground boxing, the most scummy and rookie crap a scumbag can do.  Then the resolution - Diggstown is now owned by an foreign (Florida IS a different country) convict now, instead of a local. What a deal! Why does anyone still live in Diggstown? Diggstown is for those that like to get tricked only. The people who think Last Boy Scout is a great movie. But for the rest of us, it's just too thin on plot and outside of that there's not enough popcorn-eating to work with.

The year is 1992! I was four years old and started paying attention to classic films like Encino Man, SideKicks, Captain Ron, and Toys. Some of the best movies of 1992 didn't come to my attention until many years later when I had come to enjoy gritty dramas like Diggstown and Juice. Or when my obsession/Fan boy-ness for Matt Damon had fully blossomed and led me to School Ties, which is packed with great young talent like Ben Affleck, Brendan Fraser, Chris O'Donnell, and of Matty D. The movies on my top ten list for 1992 span many different genres of film from comedy and animation to sports and action/adventure. 1. Aladdin 2. A league of there own 3. A few good men 4. Mighty ducks 5. White men cant jump 6. Reservoir dogs 7. Wayne's world 8. My cousin vinny 9. Sister Act 10. 3 Ninjas
