Published by Castle Bridge Media, this gripping time-travel adventure, in which a woman races to stop climate change before it begins, is a finalist in the highly competitive Narration By The Author category. Nguyen's debut has placed her among industry icons like Whoopi Goldberg and Salman Rushdie. The Audie Awards®, often referred to as the Oscars of audiobooks, celebrate the very best in the field. Past nominees and winners include luminaries such as Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, and Sam Heughan. In The 23rd Hero, Nguyen delivers an extraordinary performance, voicing over 30 characters with accents ranging from French to Swedish. Speaking about her narration journey, Nguyen shared, “I never intended to narrate this audiobook myself, so I didn't hold back when writing diverse characters from all corners of the globe. Recreating those voices was a challenge, but one I embraced wholeheartedly.”Nguyen credits New York City dialect coach Erik Singer, known for his work with Austin Butler in Elvis, for helping her bring the characters to life. “Erik is a miracle worker,” Nguyen said. “He helped me navigate some of the toughest dialect challenges, including crafting a French accent from the 16th century before modern French existed. This nomination wouldn't have been possible without his guidance.”The audiobook was produced at Independent Studios in Milwaukee, WI, with expert sound design by Steve Kultgen. The 2025 Audie Awards® winners will be announced at the Audies Gala in New York City on March 4.Rebecca Anne Nguyen (she/her) is no stranger to acclaim. Welcome back! This week the ladies reviewed "Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno- Garcia. (Warning, this episode contains spoilers for the book.) In this book, a family of in-bread colonizers living in a mold laced haunted mushroom house in the Mexico City country side, try to hold main character Noemi, and her cousin, Catalina hostage in this creepy hellscape. The Doyle family, originally from England, planned to use the women's wombs as incubators. The goal?... An effort to diversify their incestuous gene pool, while simultaneously preserving the twisted patriarch's tainted bloodline in an effort to obtain immortality! Gross and weird! It's giving serious Lord Voldermort vibes!!! Of course Kat finds a way to slide in a Star Trek reference, and they also have a fundamental disagreement on what they would have done at the end of the book. Tune in to find out what had the ladies divided! *Dedication: To the listeners: * To our listeners always, to indigenous people all over the world and the Latinx community and finally Kat's late father, that dude Buster. The audio track is garbage. Sorry but Jim's an old blind guy so it was really a goddamn miracle we recorded anything at all. Janky sound was inevitable. And, as we address almost immediately, perfect for the subject matter: the documentary (https://twitter.com/R_Roddy_Piper/status/383693269068050432) They Live. Anyway. There's a real murderer's row of talent on hand to discuss the rich, insurrectionary art of They Live. Two of my favorite writers and people join me to celebrate and dissect John Carpenter's masterwork: Slackjaw (http://www.electronpress.com/EPexec/Slackjaw.html) columnist Jim Knipfel (http://www.jimknipfel.com/) and investigative journalist Alexander Zaitchik (https://www.zaitchik.com/). When it was released in 1988, They Live was a reaction to Ronald Reagan's America but, as Jim says, "They Live never goes away." We talk about the cultural and historical forces that made _They Live _ inevitable and the diverging ideological interpretations of the movie that have sprung up since. Jim is a force of nature. Alex makes sharp observations. I drop a minor bombshell about "Rowdy" Roddy Piper being a teensy bit reckless about racial slurs in a decades-old interview. Hope his estate doesn't sue. Maybe I can convince them to put on these special sunglasses they'll see things my way. You can read the original Ray Nelson short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" here (https://pvto.weebly.com/uploads/9/1/5/0/91508780/eight_o%E2%80%99clock_in_the_morning-nelson.pdf). Episode 27: Howdy-do, folks. Are you gung-ho to dive on in today? Well, you better be! The boys worked mighty hard to keep this one afloat. Is that a mixed metaphor? Probably and sorry. As promised, Albert and Ryan partake in a little Dingbat Cocktail exploration and the results are simply smashing...in that, the fellas get a bit smashed. However, nothing could really ever stop the idiom train from plowing through that wee town known as Inebriation, so onwards and upwards! Anyhow, find that play button on your least favorite listening device and give it a long, hard push. You'll be pleased as punch that you did.

We wake up to coffee from a pod, listen to music on our pod devices, drive to work in our Smart cars, Fiats, or other increasingly pod-shaped vehicles, sit all day in a cubicle (pod), relax after work in a hip, new float pod, wash our clothes using detergent pods, and while we wait for them to dry, we listen to our favorite podcast. Sound about right? What is it about pods that we're so drawn to? And why do an increasing number of our products and services all feature the word pod in their name? Is it possible the pod's slick, liminal aesthetic, or the allure of its Pandorian promise holds some sway over our subconscious? Might Freud have something to say about its curvature, or its role in nature as a place of transformation, emergence, and ultimately independence? Perhaps it's the pod's minimalism and symmetry which appeal to us as we negotiate an increasingly chaotic world. Or is it simply an efficient design suited to meet the needs of our busy lives? This hour, we speak with experts and discuss the mystery of the pod in consumer- and pop-culture. We'll also look back over recent history and explore the possibility that we are, and always have been, pod-people! GUESTS: Blanka Domagalska - Lecturer at Otis College of Art and Design teaching courses on product Design, with expertise in art history, media and cultural theory, philosophy and aesthetic liminality Elvina Beck - Co-founder and CEO of Podshare, a membership based real estate startup designed to allow low cost pod living in major cities Kotaro Aoki: Former philosophy major at Wesleyan University and self professed pod napper Jim Knipfel - Novelist and author of a series of critically acclaimed memoirs including Slackjaw, Quitting the Nairobi Trio, and Ruining It for Everybody; he also authored the longrunning "Slackjaw" column which appeared in several publications Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. Hi and welcome to what I hope is the first of many episodes! I'm your host Lauren Morris. I am also the founder and director of AdLib Theatre. Just like with the Improv Teachers podcast, I wanted to take a closer look into the world of artistic directors. What do we look for when performers take to the stage? How can we give clear notes? What goes on behind the scenes? These are some of the questions we will be examining in these short episodes. Every week or so, I will give you a recap of our show, what the expectation was, how it turned out, and some tips and tricks on bringing your improv to life on stage! I hope you enjoy this new experiment and I look forward to this adventure with you. About Me (Lauren Morris): Lauren Morris is the founder and director of AdLib Theatre Company as well as the Executive Producer for the Central Florida Improv Festival. Lauren studied improv at The Annoyance Theatre & Bar with Mick Napier and with Paul Vaillancourt (co-Founder of iO West) at iO West. She has taken workshops and classes with such improv notables as Kevin Mullaney, Jill Bernard, Rebecca and Rich Sohn, Adal Rifai, Susan Messing, and Mark Sutton and members of the UCB Theater in New York City. Lauren hosts The Improv Teachers (winner of Best of Improv Podcasts, 2017, PlayerFM). A podcast dedicated to discussing the art of teaching improv. Additionally, she is a veteran of numerous improv festivals where she has been invited to perform and teach. As a writer, Lauren has been featured in publications such as Weekly Humorist, Slackjaw, Belladonna, MockMom, Points in Case, and Robot Butt. She honed her satire skills via Second City. Michael Christian (Bordeaux, I'm Susan, Slackjaw) and Isabella Roland (Mom-Prov, Turnt, Crumbs) join us this week for tales of terrorism and heroism. Izzy shares her experience in Paris during an attack and Mike talks about living in New York with some vagabond neighbors and almost dying on the way to a wedding. This leads to some insanity involving the Vice President's whereabouts, the comfort of existential dread, and keeping it together at a death-defying wedding! A spoken word version of the humor piece, "How to Be a Famous Writer Who Makes Fat Wads of Cash," featured in Slackjaw.
Welcome to Decomposed Radio Show 045, broadcasting from back here in Sheffield, UK! First up, apologies for being off air for a few weeks and not keeping up the fortnightly shows whilst away in Australia. Predictably it turned out to be a little tricky to get mixes and recordings together whilst based out of a tent in the outback! I'm happy to say though, that we're back on it now, and have some great plans, including some quality Antipodean talent that we discovered in Melbourne, and a mix of the amazing music from the iconic climbing film "Hard Grit." Today's show is inspired by one of the labels that we re-stumbled across whilst researching and collecting the music from Hard Grit, the equally iconic "Platipus Records". Platipus Records was the brainchild of artist and producer Simon Berry, and was a super popular and successful trance label throughout the 90's and well into the naughties. The release "Platipus Archives Volume Three and Four" includes the track "Chrome" by Chromium, which Slackjaw film used to great effect in the bouldering segment of Hard Grit. Show 045 is a departure from the usual house and techno fayre on Decomposed Radio, and features some great trance tracks, all from that release. The climbers amongst you will no doubt recognise the iconic track, as well as some serious anthems........

Your Government: Mary Ocher + Your Government's live show is a sub-religious experience with the mysterious spirits of the ancients, in an audio-visual explosion of cult futuristic rock&roll, with the queen outsider of Berlin Avant-Pop exploring the depths of forbidden tribal, electronic ecstasies. Mary Ocher & Your Government's debut album will be out in November on Faust's Klangbad Records - a synth-heavy psych bomb, consisting of various elements of oldschool industrial music as well as cumbia and tribal rhythms, krautrock and no-wave. https://www.facebook.com/MaryOcherMusic Iskwé: Called ‘One to Watch’ by The Grid TO and one of the ‘Top 10 Canadian Musicians You Need to Know’ by CBC Music, Iskwé’s cross-cultural aesthetic is as striking as her tripped-out blend of soul. The name Iskwé (pronounced iss-kway) means ‘woman’ in her native language. Iskwé’s debut album weaves together her Irish and Cree/Dene roots with hip hop breakbeats, left-field R&B, and traces of piano pop (Think Esthero meets Alicia Keys). Her debut record was nominated for Electronic/Dance Album of the Year at the 2014 Western Canadian Music Awards and single “Slack Jaw” was voted Regional Finalist in the 2014 CBC Searchlight Competition. The first 15 minutes of the show are wonderful collages and music, by DEVO (new and mostly unreleased), Rev. Royal de Capitator, The Large, The Deathbillies, The Psycho Skeletons, Rev. Cozmik Debris (with NEW "PR NOOZ!"), Dr. Slackjaw, the Ministry of Slack and The Horror of Party Beach. Then the "ON AIR" display lit up, Dave called in, and, well, you know. We went off on some tangents. Then Dr. Sinister entered the studio, and he added more tangents. A great motherlode of tangents, contradictory as that may seem. We enjoyed it, but it took 6 hours and much movie viewing to slow down and go to sleep after performing this live show. I, Stang, was somewhat agitated and worked-up for some reason, probably the return of health after an ankle injury during our 3 months of travel.
This episode just seems to spew pretty much all over the place. Dr. Slackjaw, also known as Rev. Royal de Capitator, Rev. Xister and Rev. Sweetness McGee of the Ministry of Slack show podcast all provide godzillions of collages. We experience The Puzzling Evidence show from KPFA Berkeley last February, with hosts Puzzling, Philo Drummond, Dr. Hal, and special guests Kaosmic Bobkat, Rev. Phineas Narco, Dr. Gary G'broagfran, Princess Wei, and Rev. Ivan Stang. X-Day is a-coming, so that gets addressed at length, with a short side-trip to Austin, Texas from the winter's SubGenius Family Vacation. Radio Synaesthesia of WCSB Cleveland is abused from afar.
