Some movies have great titles that you just blurt out for no reason whatsoever mid-conversation as a non-sequitur. This movie is definitively one of those films. This week in Non-Cannon, JD and Randy kill the Babysitter. That's right, we checked out 1991's "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead".
School's out for summer and Mark brings back his film scholar friends Jason Kashiwagi and C.C. Webster to talk about two June movies: 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for its 50th anniversary and 1991's Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead for its 30th anniversary. These films have more in common than just 6 word titles! We bow down to Joanna Cassidy and Gene Wilder, and learn that we stand divided on sleeping in your parents' bed when they're away. And Soapdish, which also just turned 30, gets a special mention!
Comedy writer Sara Hov *physically* drops by the studio to discuss the 1991 classic film DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER'S DEAD starring Christina Applegate, Josh Charles, Joanna Cassidy and, inexplicably, David Duchovny. Whether you're prepubescent or your pubescent days are over, this movie is a treat! What's this? It's a guest! This week we are joined by one of our trusted drinking game consultants and our dear friend, Abby! She joined us for this nostalgic trip to the 90's, where Christina Applegate has to hide a body and then raise her siblings whilst trying to save a failing business. It literally couldn't get more 90's. Whip up some excitement and take a listen! Instagram - @takeadrinkwhen / Twitter - @tadwpodcast / Intro Music by Julian Moore / Art by Abigail Lupoff
Sue Ellen doesn't really like her mom very much. She doesn't like her siblings. She doesn't like much of anything. When her mom heads to Australia with her new boyfriend for a couple of months, the babysitter abruptly dies and Sue Ellen takes the opportunity to get a job. Grown up life isn't quite what she bargained for... Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy and John Getz star in Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead.
On this episode of The Movie Know it All Podcast, join Will, Bob, and Patty as they talk about Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead. They will discuss what would be the proper way to dispose of a body so your mom can stay on her work trip. Only on RGVTitanRadio.com.
We all remember Christina Applegate as the ditzy Kelly Bundy from TV's "Married with Children," but people often forget she did '90s movies, too. Before starring in "Anchorman" and "Bad Moms," a young Applegate went dark and quirky with "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead." Commissioner Brad N. told the Shat Crew to do its worst on this comedy, not knowing it was an Ash Schlafly favorite and just wild enough to entertain Gene. The big question: What will Big D say? There's a lot to love with this teen movie, including Bernie Sanders as a babysitter, damaged kids, horrible parenting, Scientology jokes, an adorable romance, and sexy villains. Yes, that is David Duchovny. Ash makes the case that Josh Charles is hot; Gene mourns the loss of another great stoner; and Big D gives us a lecture on responsibility and respect for the dead. Grab your acid washed jeans and your non-vintage Metallica tour tee because this week, the Four Old Millennials are going all the way back to 1991 to talk about the Christina Applegate classic, "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead." We remember some of the movies we used to watch on broadcast TV or basic cable just because they were airing on a Saturday afternoon, try to figure out how old these kids are, wonder why nobody has called DCFS on this negligent hoarder of a mother, and of course break down the absolutely absurd uniforms that somehow save the day. Inside the Screenwriter's Mind: A Screenwriting Podcast with Alex Ferrari
Today we go inside the mind of screenwriter Neil Landau (Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead). Neil Landau serves as Assistant Dean of Dean’s Special Programs at UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television. He's also a Professor and Associate Director of the MFA Writing for Television Program at UCLA TFT where he’s taught Screenwriting for more than 20 years.
DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD is perhaps a strange choice for a podcast that has covered such illustrious films as Notorious, Seven Samurai and Pan’s Labyrinth. It is very much a B movie, but there is just something about this film. Certainly part of it is Christina Applegate’s charming performance, and David Duchovny’s standout turn as a general slimeball. But also, this story subverts expectations again and again. Far from perfect, this is a fun, silly fable that has something to say about growing up, taking responsibility, and finding yourself in the process. Also mentioned: DEAD TO ME (2019) - TV Series. I couldn't pass up the chance to cover this classic gem before it vanished from the free movies section... I've honestly been wanting to do this since the news of the race swap remake, which I'm actually fully against. There's just too much flair in this movie that captures the essence of the 90s era, in more ways than several. And due to the fact that this title is misleading (yes, it is), I love it nonetheless. Enjoy, y'all.
Screenwriter Neil Landau (Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead) discusses his new role as Director of Screenwriting at UGA, why he moved to Georgia, and gives tips for writers!
True to form, Jeff compares his recording f*ck up last week to his spirit character, Tim Taylor. We’re back this week—with only having to record once because the mixer thingy was capturing audio through the right wires and settings and whatnot—for Angie’s pick: Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead. Jeff and Angie dig into this coming-of-age dark comedy (now considered a cult classic) and bond over their mutual love of Christina Applegate. And to Chadwick Boseman, thank you for showing us how to live purposefully. You will be profoundly missed.

The Swimfans get in over their heads, but in a much less bleak way than they expected with Stephen Herek's 1991 Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

No parents. No rules. No problem, right? Chris Parker and Sue Ellen Crandell are two teens forced into roles they never asked for — saving their own skins and watching after some youngins. The Season 3 Opener takes a closer looks at these beloved teen comedies— ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING and DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD! ▶️ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING, (1987): After her date-night plans fall through, Chris takes a babysitting job looking after a brother/sister duo and their hormone-happy friend. But when her best friend needs to be rescued, Chris has no choice but to take the kids into the big city, with nothing but trouble following close behind. **Starring Elisabeth Shue, Keith Coogan, Anthony Rapp, Maia Brewton. Directed by Chris Columbus.** ▶️DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD, (1991): A crotchety babysitter comes to watch after five kids, then almost immediately drops dead. Refusing to have their summer plans ruined, the oldest sister, Sue Ellen, decides to fake-it-til-you-make-it by getting a job in the fashion world, provide for her the bratty siblings and maybe fall in love along the way. **Starring Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy, Keith Coogan, Josh Charles. Directed by Stephen Herek.** ⏩⏩Discussions include:Origin, development and inspirations for DON’T TELL MOM and ADVENTURES’ storylines; the extremely opposite writing processes, script changes and intelligent plot motivators for both films; refreshing/rethinking formulaic plots; cultural influences and flipping of conventional gender roles; the expansive cast for both films, importance of an engagingly strong female lead and solid supporting cast; brief histories on DON’T TELL MOM and ADVENTURES’ directors; box office release; how these lengthy-titled films are vastly different in their storytelling, types of comedy and soundtracks, plus a ton of memorable moments and behind-the-scenes action thrown in! **Picks of the Week will be back in Episode 55!** ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: Billy’s surprising feelings on working with 11-year-old, Jaeden Lieberher Martell, in ST. VINCENT (2014). ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: Some of our favorite things that stick out about DON’T TELL MOM and ADVENTURES. ▶️NEXT UP: WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE (1995)!

When your mom's on an extended vacation and your babysitter croaks and you accidentally threw away all the food money, you'd better flip a coin (or an off-brand frozen pizza) and see who has to get a job and provide for the family. Even better, let's lie on a résumé to get that job you're dangerously unqualified for! Better still, let's get real acquainted with our new favorite phrase, "petty cash"! When Sue Ellen (Christina Applegate) finds out that the company may go belly-up, she devises a plan for her and her siblings to put on a fashion show to save the company. Will she be right on top of that? Will the dishes get done? Will the dirt get mowed? Tune in and see! But watch out for that creepy Gus character. He's an A-1 slimeball. It's Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead!
It’s a rite of passage for teens to keeps secrets from their parents, like when they sneak out to go to a kegger at Porkchop’s lake house, or dump the corpse of their babysitter and fake their way into a job at a fashion house while embezzling a small fortune. You know, teen stuff. We’re discussing the very relatable 1991 comedy, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead. suggestions@traumatizedpodcast.com Instagram + Twitter: @traumatizedcast facebook.com/traumatizedcast

We're right on top of that Rose! Scott and Pete sat down with the very funny #friendofthepod Mark Rosenberg (This Made Me Think of You - available on Amazon) and watched Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead! This movie has everything a little gay boy could ask for - tricking adults into thinking you're older, drag queens boosting a car and teenage Josh Charles (swoon). Sue Ellen (Christina Applegate) may be in over her head at General Apparel West but the general apparel in her closet is everything! Throw in some lip sync worthy performances by Joanna Cassidy as "Swell's" all too accommodating boss Rose and Jayne Brook's perfectly evil receptionist Carolyn (PER-SO-NNELL) and this movie has the makings of every baby-gay's top ten list. We had some stuff come up after recording this episode back in May, so, sorry about the delay. However, we still had tons of fun making this one, even if Kenny is ready to forget all about this movie. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is a HBO staple and 90s cult classic and worth seeing at least once, but three times in a week can be a little grating. We discuss child actors, Hustler v. Playboy, our personal lives, and any other random thing this movie reminds us of. Enjoy.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to write a screenplay fast? I know I do. This is why I invited on the show award-winning producer/director, best-selling author, film festival organizer and public speaker, Jeff Bollow. He is the author of Writing FAST: How to Write Anything with Lightning Speed. Jeff Bollow began as an actor at age 12 in his native Los Angeles (credits include Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead and TV's Columbo) before working nearly every job in production, from camera to sound to lighting — and including jobs in development, post-production, and distribution.Jeff has worked on feature films, TV series, commercials, music videos, radio, and corporate productions for companies such as Universal, Castle Rock, Propaganda Films, DNA and the Oxygen Network. After migrating to New Zealand, where he directed television for TV3 and co-founded the Big Mountain Short Film Festival, he moved to Australia, where he launched Embryo Films. Through his company, Jeff has reviewed over 20,000 project submissions and has edited, assessed and/or mentored over 350 projects. He has script doctored in Singapore, Australia, NZ and the US; and has conducted over 80 live weekend workshops to over 1200 writers in 9 cities in 5 countries, with a unanimous "recommend" approval rating. His students have been optioned, produced and won (and placed) in competitions worldwide. He designed FAST Screenplay in 2004 and began officially building it in November 2009. It was finally completed in July 2016, nearly 7 years later. Alongside it, he created the FASTscreenplay YouTube Channel, which now includes over 30 detailed and insightful free videos to encourage writers and screenwriters around the world. In May 2015, Jeff Bollow delivered his first TED Talk, "Expand Your Imagination... Exponentially" (see video below) at TEDxDocklands in Melbourne, Australia, to prepare for the next phase of the larger plan. Jeff's aim is to build an independent film studio that inspires creativity worldwide, to help prepare humanity for the dramatic changes our future holds. When he's not busy helping writers with FAST Screenplay, he is working on a new book, developing a television series, and planning two feature film projects. Enjoy!

The Brothers are left alone for a whole summer without any parental supervision.
A woman inexplicably leaves her children for several months to dick around in Australia while some rando geriatric "takes care of them". Well, turns out some posters full of jugs and satanic references kills her, the money she was given is buried, and the family has to find a way to survive against all odds. Come for the quotables, stay for the blatant sexual harassment by an . . . executive? Who knows. This movie is amazing. The dishes are done man.
After two botched attempts back in November, we're FINALLY re-recording our Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's episode. Rejoice!!! This flick was a family classic that we'd watch every time it came on TV and although it gave us false hopes about how our adulthood would turn out, it still made us appreciate so much. It taught us important life lessons like, how to do QED reports (make your nice friend do them!), how to send a fax (wait for that same nice friend and then copy her!) all while jamming to some amazing soundtrack work. HOLY COW YOU GUYS! We did it! We somehow conned an actual famous actor from a movie we love to come on the podcast to talk flicks with us! Our very first celebrity guest, the ridiculously cool Keith Coogan, graciously stopped by to discuss 2 personal favorites - Adventures in Babysitting (1987) and Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead (1991)! And it was a boatload of awesome! We literally almost had a movie geek panic attack. But we kept it together and chatted about everything from Keith's geeky wedding, famous grandfather Jackie Coogan, doing voice work for Fox and the Hound, Corey Feldman's music career, his stint on our fave show Growing Pains, dates with Elizabeth Shue (!!!!), blues bar performances, weird 80's hair and sweaters, seeing Vincent D'Onofrio in Full Metal Jacket for the 1st time, 'Beat It' video subway fights, 'So Cool' license plates to Rolling Stones tattoos, living with Corey Haim, Kenny's wig and ability to get dishes done, smoking fake weed, advice to David Duchovny & even a bit of Toy Soldiers love! Plus, Keith gives us the scoop on his surprising new gig involving lizards! And we even got to verify IMDB Trivia for the very first time with someone who should know! Cruel Summer threatens to become Endless Summer as we present this much delayed episode. A million things interfered with our recording schedule but we'll point the finger mainly at illness, back to school and Rodan (not necessarily in that order). We planned this as two separate episodes but figured it was time to move on to new things so it is a 2 for 1 deal. This week we're joined once again by comedian Brian Ward to discuss DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER'S DEAD, the 1991 teen comedy starring Christina Applegate, Josh Charles, Keith Coogan, Kimmy Robertson and David Duchovney. That's right, Fox Freakin' Mulder! Plus an old lady, somebody's sweet nana, who dies alone. Anyway. DTMTBD gave us our first taste of freedom as youngsters and taught us how not to handle human remains, but how does it hold up now? Listen below to find out. Also, Subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher. Was this movie secretly written by a 10 year old that doesn't understand the real world except through the characterizations of TV sitcom adults? Also, Sam would like to sincerely apologize for mixing up Joshua Jackson and Jeremy Jackson in her Camp Nowhere reference. It’s inexcusable but she learned her lesson, unlike the Crandell kids who never learn anything. On this week's episode, the #SBE2016 rolls on with the 1991 cult classic, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead! As the guys chat about this "We Love Movies" selection, questions come up including: What was with that deleted story arc where one of the kids killed the babysitter? Is that teenage kid really flying the Confederate flag? And what is with that Mr. Egg fella? PLUS: What if Star Wars never took off and George Lucas was forced into menial office work? It might sound... a little something... like this. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead stars Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy, Josh Charles, Keith Coogan, David Duchovny, Kimmy Robertson, Danielle Harris, and John Getz; directed by Stephen Herek.
Neil Landau, screenwriter of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Tad the Lost Explorer, and professor of screenwriting at the UCLA program, offers his advice to aspiring screenwriters.
Steve Cooper talks with actor Keith Coogan. Keith is the grandson of legendary character actor Jackie Coogan, and began his acting career doing TV commercials -- his first gig was as a stand-in in a McDonalds TV spot -- as well various TV shows and made-for-TV movies. He did the voice of Young Tod for the charming animated Disney picture The Fox and the Hound. His first on-screen role was as the smitten Brad Anderson in the delightful teen comedy cult favorite Adventures in Babysitting. He gave a very funny and engaging performance as Christina Applegate's stoner layabout brother Kenny in the equally enjoyable Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead and was impressive as Jonathan Snuffy Bradberry in Toy Soldiers. Among the television programs Coogan has made guest appearances on are The Love Boat, Eight Is Enough, Mork & Mindy, Knight Rider, CHiPS, Starman, 21 Jumpstreet and Tales from the Crypt.
We talk about the trailer for the "remake" of Point Break, get a phone call from Keith Coogan (Adventures in Babysitting, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Toy Soldiers), and we play a create-your-own-buddy-cop-by-numbers movie.
We're right on top of that, Rose! In this episode we dig up the corpse of one of Donna's childhood favorites and try to convince her it's a rotting mess. She still loves it, Carlos doesn't, and Chris is somewhere in the middle. Join us as we discuss irresponsible mothers, moon goddesses, bizarre pick-up lines, Chris' problem with the lack of "fun & games" in the screenplay, the irresistible charm of Kenny and Brian, why Steve Harvey would approve of this story, and of course... the fashion.
