This week, we present Chris's interview with some of the Fairfax County Public Schools AT Team: Jeff Sisk, Meaghan Tracy, Jennifer Carr, Ashley Kiley, and Colleen Kalamajka! They gather to share about the life of AAC/AT Specialist Jeff Powers, who passed away in 2023. They celebrate some of the many things he brought to his work with AAC, including helping people feel OK even if they don't know everything, early support for the Specific Language System First Approach, his work sharing AAC on platforms like Youtube, and more! Before the interview, Chris and Rachel discuss the recent addition of automatic transcripts to Apple Podcasts, and some of the previous “behind the scenes” work that was done to provide transcripts for TWT episodes. Our guest today, Dr. Jeff Powers discusses CBD use in pets. The main areas that CBD has scientifically been shown to be beneficial for is reducing, pain and, increasing movement in dogs with osteoarthritis. Much like in people, CBD has been shown in studies to reduce frequency of seizures in dogs. There's increasing work now in the area of anxiety and the results have been mixed. But what they have found, in a recent study, is as long as you get a significant amount of CBD, into the pet, it can also be beneficial in reducing anxiety as well. And so some vets may be up to speed on where it can be used and when it can be used, and a lot of other ones may not be, or may be fearful to even recommend it because of potential legal implications because it's not a pharmaceutically approved medicine at this point, except for there's one approved. Guest Expert on CBD Jeffrey Powers, DVM, Practice Owner of Beaver Island Hemp Co. Dr. Power is currently the owner of Jordan Valley and Beaver Island Veterinary Clinic https://www.veterinaryclinicsnorth.com/, two offices in Northern Michigan. Dr. Powers was president of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association in 1997 and has served on numerous MVMA and AVMA Committees and Councils. Jeff recently Chaired the AVMA's Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents, and helped form the AVMA's Veterinary Cannabis Working Group. He also serves as a board member of the Veterinary Cannabis Society https://veterinarycannabissociety.org/about-us/committees/, consults for Green Gruff, Inc https://greengruff.com/ and owns Beaver Island Hemp Company (www.beaverislandhemp.com ) where he grows and produces CBD Hemp Products for human and animal use. Dr Powers and his human and animal families live in Northern Michigan. Jeffrey Powers, DVM, Practice Owner Caring for animals has been always been a way of life for Dr. Powers. Ever since he was a child he has always had a deep love for all animals. That is why, it wasn't a surprise when he decided that he wanted to become a veterinarian. Dr. Powers decided to follow in his oldest sister's footsteps who is in the health professions field as well. Dr. Powers graduated from Michigan State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science with High Honors, and in 1980 from Michigan State University with a DVM degree with Honors. At the age of 23, he worked under the guidance of Dr. Robert Johnson in Yale, Michigan. He soon established his own practice in 1980, where he would work out of a one room office and would drive the country roads of the thumb of Michigan from farm to farm. Dr. Powers is the founder and owner of Beaver Island Veterinary Services and the owner of Jordan Valley Animal Clinic, providing mixed animal veterinary services to the community of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan and East Jordan Michigan. He is also the founder and former owner of South Sanilac Veterinary Hospital in Peck, Michigan. He continues to care for all animals large or small which explains why his customers often describe him as very caring, sensitive and compassionate in the care of their animals. Before we get to the interview lets take a look at this weeks Slurred Word Six Pack of the Week **Six Pack of the Week** YEAHHHH Thats right its another edition of the Six Pack of the Week. Remember if you would like to make an intro song for the six pack of the week post it on SoundCloud and tag it with #SixPackofTheWeek. This weeks pick is a N.E. IPA from Old Nation Brewing Co. called M-43. M-43 is the first release in Old Nation's "New Orthodox" IPA series. It is designed to accentuate the deep and complex character from the combination of Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hops. This beer has a big citrusy/tropical aroma and flavor with notes of Pineapple, Mango, and Grapefruit. The hop bitterness is not particularly intense, which lends itself to a very drinkable, juicy IPA. The beer has a very destinctive haze not from the yeast, but rather from an interplay of lipids from the malted oat and oils and acids which naturally occur in the hand selected Dry hops. The Slurred Words Six Pack of the week is sponsored by 9 & Hilton Market, located at the corner of 9 Mile Rd and Hilton Rd in Ferndale MI. With a great selection of craft beer, wine, and spirits you are for sure to find something to enjoy. So head on down to 9 & Hilton Market and tell them Bill sent you. Jeff Powers is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music with a degree in Classical Guitar performance and have been teaching and performing in the Cleveland area for 20 years. I've been playing guitar since a very young age and have studied Rock, Classical, Blues, Jazz and Folk styles. Also, I'm a songwriter and have recorded 3 CD's of original music. After many years of teaching in my studio, music schools and at Tri-C I decided to teach to the home. My motivation was fueled by an earlier experience when I was living and teaching in Mexico City. Since the city was so big and the traffic was beyond belief many students started asking me to come to their home.
