One of your greatest opportunities to make a difference as a leader is self-regulation. Self-regulation refers to a person's ability to consciously manage and control their thoughts, feelings and behavior in order to achieve certain goals or meet the demands of their environment. This ability is crucial in an increasingly fast-paced and complex world. Today, Stefan explains the three components of self-regulation and how you can apply them correctly: Cognitive Control, Emotional Control and Behavioral Control. This is the last episode of the self-management series. Next month, Stefan will begin the team leadership series, which will focus on how you as a leader can best lead your team. ––– Click here for the Tim Ferris Show: https://podcasts.apple.com/ch/podcast/577-hugh-jackman-on-best-decisions-daily-routines-the/id863897795?i=1000552955819 Do you like the LEITWOLF® Leadership podcast? Did you enjoy today's podcast? Share it with another PA and subscribe! If you want more information about healing from burnout or want more resources and information (including my free mini book on recovering from burnout), come on over to my site. Find out more about coaching or upcoming events. I'd love for every one of you to pop over and say hello! Take home points: Be intentional about relationships and invest in them early on and throughout your career. PAs have a remarkable skill set that transcends the practice of medicine. We can literally work in any industry (sales, communication, tech, publications, research, leadership, etc.) Always look for a sense of joy in what you do. Misery is not an option. If you're miserable, stop doing what you're doing and find something else as soon as possible. Prioritize balance in your life. Know what you want in your center. Live with intention and purpose Figure out WHAT you want, HOW you're going to achieve it, WHY it matters to you, and WHEN you want to do it. Time is finite. Allocate the time and resources you have in order of your priorities. Forgetting your core priorities or who you are as a person can lead to burnout. Invest time in contemplating who you are and what matters to you. Looking for an active retirement? Design it with others. Join us in the next Design Your New Life in Retirement group program starting April 26. Today's Building Blocks: Fun and Wellness Spring is right around the corner and it's a great time to explore new outdoor activities and re-energize your routines by trying something new. Caroline Paul's newest book, Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking — How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives As We Age, delves into the science and psychology of the outdoors - and our place in it as we age with real-life stories of women living it today. Caroline Paul joins us from San Francisco. ________________________ Bio Caroline Paul has always filled her life with adventure. Now 60, she expects this new stage of life to be every bit as invigorating and full of high adrenalin escapades as the last. But as she skateboards, paddles a SUP, or surfs in cold winter swell alongside many men her age, she sees fewer and fewer older women. Isn't the outdoors a vital elixir? Shouldn't adventure be something we pursue as we age? Caroline grew up in Connecticut, graduated from Stanford University and originally planned to be a documentary filmmaker. In her adult life, Caroline has been an extremely active athlete: she's not only been a white-water raft guide and a private pilot, but also has competed in the U.S. Nationals for the sport of Luge, mountain-biked in such places as China and Vietnam, flown her para-glider in Brazil, sea-kayaked in Alaska, and skied the back country of Denali and the Sierras. One of the first women to join the San Francisco Fire Department, Caroline wrote the book, "Fighting Fire", about her experiences as a firefighter; this book was published, to great acclaim, in 1998. Caroline is also the author of the New York Times bestseller "The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure" and "Lost Cat: A True Story of Love, Desperation, and GPS Technology", which has been translated into fifteen languages, the middle-grade book "You Are Mighty: A Guide to Changing the World", and the novel "East Wind, Rain". Her TED Talk, “To Raise Brave Girls, Encourage Adventure,” has been viewed over 2 million times. A longtime member of the Writers Grotto, she lives in San Francisco. ________________________ For More on Caroline Paul Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking — How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives As We Age carolinepaul.com ________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like The Joy of Movement – Kelly McGonigal The Mindful Body – Ellen Langer Growing Old, Staying Rad – Steven Kotler The Power of Fun – Catherine Price ________________________ Mentioned in This Episode https://www.retirementwisdom.com/podcasts/breaking-the-age-code-dr-becca-levy/ Caroline Paul on The Tim Ferris Show (2016) ________________________ Wise Quotes On Outdoor Adventure "Everything about outdoor adventure hits all the pillars that we need for fulfilling aging and - all in one fell swoop. So I realized during the research of this book that we need to have community as we age. We need to have purpose as we age. We need to have novelty. And of course there's health. And then the final one, which is lesser known, is the positive mindset about our own aging. And if you go outside you actually in one fell swoop hit all of those." On Awe "There was adrenaline, but that wasn't the actual experience. And what I found was that what I was experiencing was awe. And by the time I handed in my book in there had been other books about it, but I did not know much about it at all when I was writing it. And I realized that awe is what you experience in the face of something bigger than you. And it's mostly considered a religious word most of the time, but we're bringing it more into our vocabulary. But all is something obviously that the outdoors often inspires and turns out it's really good for you.
Neil Mackinnon describes himself as a curious human, and his curiosity has guided him throughout a remarkable career in which he has been immersed in creative projects, surrounded by creative people, and focussed on creative potential.Crucially, he has also spent a great deal of his life listening and being truly present to what has occurred around him, and these qualities aided a sense of catharsis and newfound aliveness when he first experienced coaching.Neil is one of the new hosts of The Coach's Journey Podcast, and in this episode he gets to the heart of why coaching has become such a prominent focus of a life in which he has worked as a professional musician, a creative producer for Europe's largest centre for the arts, and now as a faculty member at the Academy of Executive Coaching. He explains how skilful coaches helped him access the power and potential of coaching to overcome profound challenges in his work, and how coaching appealed to his sense of adventure and his disposition as a man fascinated by all industries, all people, and all walks of life.
“I appreciate you keeping me safe, but I'm good… I can cross the street, I can go to college, I can leave town, I can try this new job… I can even fail! And I'll be okay.”In this episode, I hope you take away a lot of beautiful realizations as much as I did talking to this week's wonderful guest. We get vulnerable and speak openly about what we think it takes to be a better leader based on our own experiences. We talk about leadership, the art of growing up, his book called Reboot which I highly recommend, and a new book coming later this year called “Reunion: Leadership and the Longing to Belong” which he teased was a “powerful book to write” and that he is very proud of it…Joining me on the mic is someone who has been on The Tim Ferris Show, The EntreLeadership Podcast with Dave Ramsey, and so many other reputable podcasts, and is now on The Leaders Lab to share his wisdom with our audience. Today it is just me, I'd like to share a quote with you that opened up my mind a little bit, in a really good way, and inspired me to think about what I know, and how we should perhaps be a bit more opened minded sometimes... But before I share that with you, I'd like to tell you a story of self-reflection this week. For the past 7 days, I was in Honolulu Hawaii, on spring break with my family, and had the chance to catch up with 2 other sprinkler nerds, my good friend Paul Bassett and Dave Woods, both from ENVOCORE. They are working on a killer project at Pearl Harbor that I was fortunate to assist with, and it was great to see them both. Special shoutout to Dave Woods, for entertaining my wife such that she actually drank a beer. 2 beers. My wife doesn't drink beer, and we met Dave at a tiny microbrewery on the Island, and my wife actually drank beer. On the flight home, I was catching up on emails and remembered that I had been asked to be interviewed on the Scaling UP! H2O Podcast, and as part of the scheduling process I was asked to answer a series of questions, one of which was to write a short bio about myself and my business history. It was in this process of reviewing my past that I had a few moments of self-reflection that I typically don't allow time for. I asked myself a question, I don't know why, but it seemed like to right question to ask if I wanted to advise someone else and tell them about my business career. At first I wrote down a whole bunch of things, a ton of accomplishments, timeline, work, projects, etc. Then I reflected again, and asked myself how I could simplify this - if someone were to ask me for advice, about what got me where I am, I'm certainly not going to rattle off all of this goobliguck to them, TMI!.....then I thought, is there something specific that ties my different successes together. And I encourage you to ask yourself this same question - what makes you, you? What makes you successful at what you do? What got you where you are? I boiled it down to 2 specific traits, or philosophies, or whatever you want to call it. #1 Creativity #2 Curiosity That is pretty much how I got here. Got here talking to you, and that is how I'm going to get where I want to go. This will be different for you, and I encourage you to spend time reflecting on this from your own life, and if you have never had a thought like this before, give it a try, it may seem awkward weird, but I can tell you that the benefits will start to compound over time. So now, let's transition into the quote of the week... I heard this quote while listening to the Tim Ferris Show, and I'll plug that again, it is a great podcast for expanding your mind, I highly recommend it. Tim mentioned this quote, and he couldn't recall the exact phrasing, so I looked it up. The quote is this: "Half of what we are going to teach you is wrong, and the other half is right. Our problem is that we don't know which half is which". This quote was from Dr. Charles Burwell, Dean of Harvard Medical School from 193-1949. It resonated with me, partially because of my passion for curiosity and creativity, but also because this is all just a big experiment. Seriously, watering plants is just a big experiment, and I think that it is important to remind ourselves that what we think we know maybe be correct, and it also may be incorrect. And it could be correct today, in 2023, and it could also be incorrect in 2028. Everything is subject to both change and relevance to the information provided at the time which may lead to the theory being correct or incorrect. Just think about sprinklers. How we water the landscape today, is different than how we watered the landscape in 1975. The tools we use are different. The scheduling formulas are different. The automation is different. And I say this to give you permission to keep an open mind. You do not need to be an expert who has all the answers, instead, I encourage you to be an expert that continuously questions what you know, in constant pursuit of perhaps a better way of doing it. That's it. 50% of what you know is right, you just know which 50%. That's it, my friends, I encourage you to stay curious, ask questions, try something new, learn, and repeat. Have an amazing weekend.

Andy shares his insight about the definition of quality while listening to an interview with Seth Godin on The Tim Ferris Show (#638). QUALITY. If you are a perfectionist, Quality as is a great way to hide. And if you factor in that according to Wikipedia, 25-30% of the general population are perfectionists. That's quite high, and how is the word Quality, a great way to hide? He says this because he believes, and I would agree with him, that you do not want to be an enemy of quality. I'm going to dig into this, but I'd like for you to think about how often you might use this word in your own business, or in your own daily routines. I'd put money down, that you use the word quality to describe your company, your work, your ethic, etc., you cannot be the enemy of quality. When an engineer, a product manager, or a company, says, "I can't ship this yet because the quality isn't there (like a physical product, or software), or someone says, "why are you racing through that project, don't you want to put quality into it?" We feel defenseless in the face of that question, because yes, we want quality. So, someone who doesn't want to ship their work is going to stand behind perfectionism. BUT perfectionism has nothing to do with Perfect, and perfect does not have a lot to do with quality. BOOM! Mic fucking drop right there. I think I should say that again, perfectionism has nothing to do with perfect, and perfect does not have a lot to do with quality. Holy cow, right?!? So, what this means, and this is the heart of my aha moment, and this episode, is that quality has a very specific definition. This concept is something that I had not given much thought to in the past, because, perhaps I was making my own definition of quality, through my own lens, and my personal tastes, based on my own experiences, but in knowing what was this ever a specific definition of quality. So, what does QUALITY mean? Seth Godin said that, the definition of QUALITY, comes from Edwards Deming, and the rest of the quality movement of the 40's and 50's, the people who gave us, the Toyota, and what it means is, MEETS SPEC. That's it. That is what quality means, that. is. it. MEETS SPEC. Then he says, so if I asked you what is a better car, a Toyota Carolla, or a rolls Royce, the answer is, a Toyota Carola, because the Toyota meets SPEC. It more reliably does exactly what it is supposed to do, when it is supposed to do it than a rolls Royce does, but rolls Royce is a different thing, it is luxury, and it is deliberately spending resources to create something that most people can't have. Boom, mic drop again! To me, this means quality could mean many things, but you must know what the specification was, in order to decide if the product or project was quality. I guess that what this might also mean, is that if you are a landscape contractor or an irrigation contractor, and you do not meet the project specification, you do not do quality work. Simple as that. How well did you meet the project specification? If you are a design-build contractor, perhaps you also have the advantage of writing the specification - and if you can write the specification - I would you could deliver a finished project that meets your own specification well. The next definition of quality which I won't go deep into in this episode, but it is equally important, especially when there is no clear SPEC to MEET, which is often the case with landscape construction projects - the next definition of quality is THE MAGIC of MAGIC. What is the Quality of Magic - think about the good old fashion coin trick, when a good magician either makes the coin disappear, or the coin goes from one hand to the other. For a moment you feel something, some amazement, some tension, the tension of questioning how that just happened, because you know that couldn't happen - but that just happened - and you have both of these feelings at the same time. That couldn't happen, but that just happened, at the same time. Once you know how the tick is done, it is simply a trick, the magic is gone. And in the case of a great performance or great customer service, or great theatre, the first time you experience it, the unexpected moment when the lights turn on for you, that is the magic moment, and that Magic moment is another definition of quality. Seth believes that with robotics, artificial intelligence, and offshoring, the work that is left for us, is the work to create magic. That is really powerful, how do you create magic? So guys, if your product or project does not has a SPEC you can MEET, you might look for the magic in the magic. What can you offer your clients, for the first time, that will have an unexpected moment of wow? - I'm writing that down - look to give your customers an unexpected moment of wow - and they will perceive that as QUALITY. So perhaps, and I'm going to leave this thought with you....would it be possible to meet a spec 100% and do a quality job, and if every contractor met the spec and did a quality job, what could you do to create magic. Maybe, the money is in the magic. and you know what I like best about that thought, there is no right answer, only possibilities, and only opportunities for you to separate yourself from your competition, and leave them wondering how the hell you are so successful, and why is everyone always talking about you. Alright, so let's wrap this one up. Remember that quality has a specific definition, whether you agree that the 2 we discussed here are accurate or not, you cannot define quality. What you think is quality may not be interpreted as quality to another person, and everyone uses the word quality to describe their work. So go do that - meet spec - and add magic. Or, just go create MAGIC. All right guys, so that's it, that's gonna wrap this up. And remember, as always, I'm here for you, I'm rooting for you, and I believe in you.

Welcome to another episode of the Young Dumb & Woke Podcast! Today's episode is one I am very proud of and really has the ability to change people's lives. I had the great honor of chatting with the Silicon Valley Porn Star, Jason Portnoy. I first learned about Jason through listening to an episode of one of my favorite Podcasts, The Tim Ferris Show, where he and Tim had a conversation that fully captivated me. Jason is first and foremost a fantastic human being, who goes to incredible depths of vulnerability to share his story with the world, in his new book titled Silicon Valley Porn Star. Along with his recent author title, Jason is an Entrepreneur & Venture Capitalist, who began his career at PayPal, working closely with technology icons like Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Max Levchin, and Reid Hoffman. He served as the first Chief Financial Officer of Palantir Technologies (NYSE: PLTR) and later founded Oakhouse Partners, a top-performing venture capital firm. Evidently, Jason's credentials are hard to top, and as much as I would have loved to just talk with him about his wealth of knowledge & stories in the business world, our conversation more focuses on topics that are even more captivating and impactful. Topics such as the “gateway drug” of porn, addiction, what healthy masculinity should look like in our modern day, the power of vulnerability, childhood programming & breaking generational curses, the importance of climbing your spiritual mountain, and much more. This conversation with Jason, and I truly mean this, was one of my favorite ever conversations I've had with someone, recorded or not. I got so much out of Jason's wisdom and felt energized during our entire conversation, especially because we really dove into topics that are often avoided (but desperately need to be talked about) in our culture. I hope you feel the same way.You can watch the video version of this episode on the Young Dumb and Woke YouTube ChannelIf you enjoyed the conversation, please don't forget to leave Young Dumb & Woke a 5-star rating on Apple and Spotify! You can find Jason @ https://www.jasonportnoy.com/Follow us on Instagram:@gideon_davis @youngdumbwokepod
South Africa has an awkward history with payday lending and payday adjacent lending, so I was a touch concerned when I first heard that a fresh pair of South African entrepreneurs were looking to shake up the industry. Luckily, all my concerns were misplaced, because SmartWage is not looking to rethink payday lending, they're looking to make it redundant. You can read more about SmartWage at https://www.smartwage.co.za/ In today's episode, we talk about digitising communication between employers and employees, removing trucks' worth of paperwork, and proving earned wage access.Follow Carolyn van der Merwe on LinkedIn for news on SmartWage but also updates from the Yale Africa Startup Review (or just head there directly at https://www.yasr.org/)Follow Simon Ellis on LinkedIn for news on SmartWage but also his thoughts on leadership and his podcast hot tips - including The Knowledge Project and The Tim Ferris Show which were mentioned. You can learn more about myself, Brendan le Grange, on my LinkedIn page (feel free to connect), my action-adventure novels are on Amazon, some versions even for free, and my work with ConfirmU and our gamified psychometric scores is at https://confirmu.com/ and on episode 24 of this very show https://www.howtolendmoneytostrangers.show/episodes/episode-24If you have any feedback or questions, if you would like to participate in the show, or if you'd like to find full written transcripts with timestamps head on over to HowtoLendMoneytoStrangers.ShowRegards,Brendan See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

If you've been paying attention to the mental health and wellness space, you know that psychedelics have burst onto the scene in a big way. Major universities like Johns Hopkins, Yale, and Berkeley are studying their effects on PTSD, anxiety, depression, and more. Many guides and shamans in this space describe the use of psilocybin, MDMA, and other substances together with integrative therapy sessions to be equivalent to years and years of traditional therapy. And now, these plant medicine journeys are making their mark on luxury wellness travel. My guests today are Robert Grover and Gary Logan who provide private luxury retreats and create profound experiences for clients. We discuss their experience with these medicines, their guiding philosophies, and how they orchestrate a comfortable luxury setting. For more accessible information on the science of psychedelics I can also highly recommend the Michael Pollan interview on The Tim Ferris Show. Last but not least, though the substances discussed on this episode are showing great promise in the clinical studies, they are not legal in the United States and many other countries. Celebrating The Wins And Struggles Along The Way—Mawk Phoenix (Ep 131) Today's Indie Musician—Mawk Phoenix (Ep 165) Marc was living in Malta, but had relocated to nearby Gozo when we spoke for this episode. If you're like me you may need a clue as to where these places are. They are islands in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. Marc and I reconnected as he was finishing up a course called Musical Architects, which he describes as a practical workshop that teaches how to write, arrange, record, produce, mix and finalize a song. Marc has produced and re-mixed for more than 50 major artists such as Nelly Furtado, Luis Fonsi, Paul van Dyk, Peter Gabriel, En Vogue, Alice Cooper, Cindi Lauper, Luther Vandross, Erasure, and many more, leading to several top 5 Billboard Hits including 2 #1 Hits. Needless to say, he's qualified to teach you and me how to get it done. Topics of discussion… We talk a about his upcoming album and he asks me about my experience recording songs (my first two singles). Also discussed: Marc's Musical Architects course, getting stuck in the recording process, how he starts his days with deep work in mind, and house concerts. On the topic of Deep Work, Marc mentions a book he was then reading called Deep Work by Cal Newport. Since our conversation for this episode, I heard an interview with the author on the Tim Ferris Show, one of my favorite podcasts. I have since added Deep Work to my reading list. Cal Newport has his own podcast, which I'm now enjoying (link in the show notes below). Please enjoy this conversation with me and Marc Dold. What will the future look like? In his most recent November appearance on the Tim Ferriss Show, entrepreneur and investor Balaji Srinivasan presents a cohesive explanation of the current world, and plausible scenarios of how things will play out. I found Balaji's theories so mesmerizing, I listened to the four-and-a-half-hour podcast several times, then read and took notes on the transcript. Listening to this episode was like reading a book, so – like I do with my book summaries – I wanted to improve my own understanding of the content. So, here is a podcast summarizing a podcast, in my own words. Needless to say, the podcast is worth listening to, and since this is just a summary, you should absolutely listen to it – over on The Tim Ferris Show – to get the full context. The decline of the nation state One of the main forces at play in world events, according to Balaji, is the decline of nation states. He presents this idea in reference to a prescient twenty-five year-old book called The Sovereign Individual, which he cites in this podcast appearance and others. Since the nation state is declining, it is becoming increasingly difficult for countries to control their citizens. When it's hard to control citizens, it's hard to collect tax revenue to fund institutions. This loss of control is accelerating with the rise of remote work, catalyzed by the coronavirus pandemic. As more people have been able to work from anywhere, they've become increasingly aware of how local laws and taxes affect their lives. The power of “exit” The control of a nation state over its people is limited to the extent that people have the right to what Balaji summarizes as “exit.” If you're unable to leave a place, either because the government is oppressive, or because you're tied down because, say, you have land to tend and a flock of sheep, the government has more leeway in what policies they can enforce. Citizens as “customers” If people can exit their jurisdictions – whether that's a country, a state, or a city – then citizens stop being “subjects” that jurisdictions can extract resources from, and start being “customers,” that jurisdictions want to appeal to. We've of course seen this for a long time, as cities have given tax breaks or other perks to compete over companies shopping for jurisdictions in which to place their corporate headquarters. But citizens are starting to look more like customers as smaller players have exited en masse. For example, lots of people and companies have been leaving California for Texas, in search of less state control. Balaji points out that not everyone has to exit to influence policies, but the fact that some do is tremendous leverage on any system. Crypto entrepreneurs call New York's bluff An example Balaji cites of this struggle happened when New York state introduced the BitLicense – a series of regulations required for companies to do certain kinds of cryptocurrency transactions. Balaji characterizes New York's posture in introducing these regulations as “We're New York. What are you going to do? We're the center of the world.” At least ten crypto companies then left New York, including Kraken, Bitfinex, and Poloniex. In some cases they had to pack up and move. In other cases they just stopped servicing New York customers. New York apparently overestimated their leverage, and companies left for other jurisdictions, who were more accommodating to their “customers.” Declining returns on state violence Something Balaji doesn't talk about much but that is a major theme in The Sovereign Individual – and is relevant to the decline of state control – is declining returns on violence, at least at the state level. You can think of a nation state as a collection of people who contribute taxes in exchange for protection. Serfs used to pay, to their feudal lords, the returns of farming on their plots of land, in exchange for protection. Businesses in organized-crime-controlled neighborhoods pay a fee to the mob so their businesses won't “burn down.” U.S. taxpayers pay taxes, the U.S. keeps a strong military that defends the interests of those taxpayers, and protects U.S. taxpayers' green-bill privilege by ensuring the U.S. dollar remains the world's reserve currency. A relevant observation that stands out to me: Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari once essentially said that wars used to be about control over natural resources. You can invade a country and get control over such resources, and maybe even control over labor. But China can't invade Silicon Valley, force all the engineers and entrepreneurs to work, and by doing so extract the resources there. That's a decline in the returns on violence, on the state level at least. Centralized China vs. decentralized world The main conflict Balaji sees playing out in twenty to forty years is between “centralized China” and “decentralized world.” China is a nation-state, and one of the main forces at play is the decline of the nation state, so how does that work? What is centralized China? As Balaji describes it, China is the most centralized government. It has “root” access to everything – much like you have over your computer if you have the root password. We're seeing that in the coronavirus pandemic: If there's a couple cases in a city, China can and will shut down everything, and they have total surveillance over their citizens. This high degree of centralization will be, according to Balaji, an advantage in the short- and medium-term. It's been an advantage in the coronavirus pandemic. I think the implication is that in an interconnected world with so much technological power, being highly-centralized is the only way for a government to retain control over its citizens, and thus extract resources to keep itself running. How do we get to “decentralized world?” If Balaji thinks it will take twenty to forty years for China's centralized model to cease being an advantage, that implies that a “decentralized world” will emerge as an opposing force within that twenty to forty years. So as less-centralized governments lose the ability to stay together and fund themselves from their citizens, that will fragment into smaller jurisdictions – sometimes based upon geography, other times based upon ideology. From that no-doubt messy process would emerge new models for organizing people and resources. These new models would rise to become so much better that they rival the reigning world power in this scenario – China. Sidenote from me on guns, germs, and innovation The idea of fragmented jurisdictions competing and developing “better” models makes me think of the theories presented by Jared Diamond in Guns, Germs, and Steel. Diamond theorizes that Europe came to dominate the West hundreds of years ago because Europe had itself fragmented into many competing nation states. Europe's east-west orientation also meant new methods of agriculture or livestock management easily travelled from one jurisdiction to another. If a new method was developed in Spain, it could be used in France. Those two nation-states would then compete to improve that method, along with other neighboring countries, and any improvements could easily be traded back and forth, thus optimizing a “better” method. (I say “better” in air quotes because obviously European dominance of the West is morally unsavory. Their methods were “better” merely from a game-theory standpoint: If there is one playing field – in this case, the world – the player with Europe's set of characteristics probably gains control over that playing field in most scenarios. Other methods could be considered better, depending upon by what criteria you rate them.) Since agricultural technology was so important to the success of a nation at that stage of global development, the portability of technology depended a lot upon climate – thus Diamond's theory that continents with long east-west axes, and thus similarity in climates amongst jurisdictions – innovated rapidly. But in a world where innovation in digital technologies is so important, technological innovations are more portable, and so an idea can be iterated upon and improved within every jurisdiction in the world. The three-way struggle for power: woke capital, communist capital, crypto capital Balaji presents a theory of three forces that are and will continue to be struggling for power over the coming decades. I think the implication here is many “jurisdictions” will emerge with various levels of these values. As these jurisdictions compete, some will emerge as “winners” that collectively act as a “decentralized world,” which competes with centralized China. Those three forces are: woke capital, communist capital, and crypto capital. The three organizations that represent each of these, respectively are: The New York Times, the Chinese Communist Party, and Bitcoin. A little more about each of these: Woke Capital: As embodied by NYT, says, “you should sympathize.” Communist Capital: As embodied by CCP, says, “you should submit.” Crypto Capital: As embodied by BTC (or Bitcoin maximalists, in its extreme), says, “you should be sovereign.” Both woke capital and crypto capital essentially say “you are powerful…” But woke capital finishes that sentence with “…and you should apologize for that power.” Crypto capital finishes “you are powerful...” by saying “…and you should be self-sufficient.” Communist capital instead of “_you_ are powerful,” says “_we_ are powerful…” but, like woke capital, encourages a posture of submission or bowing down as you make yourself subservient to that power. Crypto capital on the other hand encourages a confident posture with head held high. An optimal “decentralized center” Any of these forces taken to their extreme is bad. Different jurisdictions will embody different mixes of these values, and, Balaji hopes, we'll reach an optimal “decentralized center.” We'll hopefully have a decentralized world, with a good mixture of concern for one's fellow human, self-sufficiency and personal responsibility within the populace, and some degree of control by competent leaders and organizations who are qualified to make decisions for large swaths of people. State-controlled press, or a press-controlled state? The New York Times, and the American press at-large, seem to be the incumbents in America, and maybe it's because Balaji leans toward crypto capital himself – he's the former CTO of Coinbase – that he spends a good portion of the conversation criticizing the press. A resonant quote Balaji says is common: “If China's got a state-controlled press, America's a press-controlled state.” In other words, in China, politicians fire journalists. In the U.S., journalists get politicians fired. Are journalists competent? If journalists have so much influence over politics, Balaji poses the question, Why isn't the U.S. establishment led by more competent people? The media has so much influence over American politics, our remaining leaders are those who are best at using the media to gain power, not those who are actually competent in their domains. By contrast, Balaji says, the Chinese system is led by people who think more like Venture Capitalists or technologists. They can think ahead and plan for various scenarios. He cites China's decision to block outside social media companies starting way back in 2009 as prescient, probably preventing an Arab Spring-like uprising. Since the U.S. establishment do not think like VCs or technologists, they don't actually know how the world works. So everything is a surprise. As Balaji says, “the U.S. establishment [is] always behind the eight ball. Lehman is a surprise. Bear is a surprise. COVID is a surprise. Trump is a surprise. Afghanistan's a surprise. Everything is a surprise.” He presents as examples various article titles by American journalists, such as “Why Facebook Will Never Make a Significant Profit,” “Amazon.bomb,” or “Google's Toughest Search is for a Business Model.” He says, “These journos are not off by 50 percent. You can't just read their article and think you're being sophisticated by discounting it. Their mental model of the world is often off by 10,000 or a hundred thousand X.” Yet news organizations, which are for-profit endeavors, advertise themselves as arbiters of facts. Fox News used the tagline, “fair and balanced.” The Washington Post's masthead says, “Democracy Dies in Darkness,” and The New York Times ran a billboard in Times' Square that just said “Truth.” Russell's conjugation A weapon in the struggle amongst the forces of woke, communist, and crypto capital is Russell's conjugation, also known as emotive conjugation. Russell's conjugation is using different words, with different emotional valence, to describe the same thing. When philosopher Bertrand Russell talked about it on a BBC broadcast in 1948, he used the example, “I have reconsidered the matter, you have changed your mind, he has gone back on his word.” Balaji uses the example, “he doxes, she leaks, but the New York Times investigates,” pointing out that newspapers are essentially for-profit intelligence agencies. An average person can't just dig through somebody's trash and put them under surveillance, but that's what newspapers do. Obviously anyone can use Russell's conjugation, but since the media has so much power to shape our conception of reality it's especially dangerous in their hands. (If the idea of the media shaping our reality is news to you, read my summaries of media theory books such as Understanding Media, The Image, and Amusing Ourselves to Death). An example Balaji cites of Russell's conjugation in action is that the New York Times, in 2012, published an article called “How Punch Protected the Times”, about how dual-class stock helped keep the newspaper in the hands of the Sulzberger family. But in 2019, they criticized Facebook's use of dual-class stock by publishing “You Can't Fire Mark Zuckerberg's Kid's Kids”. (To be fair, they were both opinion columns.) Will the U.S. seize Bitcoin? The main force that will lead the move toward decentralization is Bitcoin. But will Bitcoin keep growing in influence, or will it be made irrelevant? Since China recently cut off mining of Bitcoin within their borders, Balaji says it's unlikely there will be a successful technical attack on Bitcoin. China was the biggest potential threat on that front, and Bitcoin survived. Threats to Bitcoin There's still some possibility of software attacks, such as a “zero day” attack, a very popular client having a vulnerability, a supply chain attack in which a library is included in the code and isn't caught, or quantum decryption being developed before quantum encryption. One potential threat to Bitcoin is the U.S. government seizing Bitcoin, much like F.D.R. did with gold in 1933. With executive order 6102, F.D.R. made it illegal to “hoard” gold coins, bullion, and certificates (which I notice was a nice Russell conjugation: Instead of “hoarding,” he could've called it “saving.”) Everyone had to turn in their gold, in exchange for a low, fixed price, so the Federal Reserve could issue more gold-backed money. Could the government do the same for Bitcoin? History running in reverse Balaji considers this an unlikely scenario, or at least a scenario unlikely to be successful, because “history is running in reverse.” That is, in 1933, the world was moving toward centralization, and today, the world is moving away from centralization. Balaji sees the peak of centralization as 1950, when there was one telephone company (AT&T), two superpowers (U.S. and U.S.S.R.), and three television stations (ABC, CBS, and NBC). Moving toward that, the Western frontier closed, the Spanish flu pandemic spread, there was the rise of the “robber barons” and private banking, the right and left were fighting in the streets, and inflation ran rampant in Weimar, Germany. Moving in reverse, we have the internet frontier opening, the COVID pandemic, the rise of tech billionaires and crypto, the right and left fighting in the streets, and what Balaji describes as “Weimar, America,” with accelerating inflation. Additionally, in 1933, F.D.R. had the world's smartest people helping him in his Brain Trust. Today, the smartest people are no longer working with the government. So, Balaji feels that if the U.S. were to attempt to seize Bitcoin, they wouldn't be able to pull it off, because history is running in reverse. I'll add that it seems that would be a tough thing to justify to the public. Executive order 6102 was at least ostensibly for the purposes of making sure the currency was backed by enough gold. I struggle to imagine a palatable justification for seizing Bitcoin from private citizens. The DeFi Matrix A big idea Balaji talks about and that Tim Ferriss agrees is a big idea is the “DeFi Matrix.” Turning an asset into money is called a “liquidity event,” because money is a liquid asset. But, increasingly, every asset can simply be traded directly for another asset, on the DeFi Matrix. For example, it's extremely easy to exchange any cryptocurrency for any other cryptocurrency. Supposedly, the DeFi Matrix will make it possible to price things we couldn't price before. Balaji uses examples such as a megabyte on your hard drive, a JPEG, or a minute of your time (which I already do on Clarity.fm). He describes this as being like when every newspaper went online and Google News was indexing all of them. Suddenly they were all competing against each other, and local newspapers that were just syndicating AP stories couldn't compete anymore. Bitcoin as a world government Are you struggling to see the connection there? If all assets can be exchanged directly for one another, then currencies are no longer dependent upon geography. Suddenly, smaller countries such as Switzerland, Singapore, or Dubai, have an opportunity to compete with their currencies on a global scale. They can add privacy features or Bitcoin backing. So even if you don't trade a megabyte on your hard drive directly for a cup of sugar, you can at least more-easily choose what liquid currency you convert to. This makes Bitcoin as like a world government, placing a constraint on every state. If a country spends more than they have, people who hold the currency can “exit” to BTC, or the DeFi Matrix. Honorable mention I've covered the main thread of this conversation, but it's extremely wide-ranging, and this summary is of course no substitute for actually listening to the conversation. Some ideas I'd like to give honorable mention, which you'll learn more about if you listen to the episode, are: Bitcoin as a “money battery,” that uses the surplus of renewable energy sources Blockchain explorers as the stealth threat to search engines How data becomes money when stored on the blockchain, thus making blockchain companies more secure How data stored on the blockchain makes it difficult to spread falsehoods What it means to be a “capital allocator,” and why we need more of them The principle/agent problem, and how automation will relegate management to the arrangement of automation Unbundling and rebundling Why San Francisco is like a terrible product with great legacy distribution How city coins will turn NIMBY into YIMBY Bitcoin as a parallel to the Protestant Reformation There you have it. I wish I knew enough to intelligently disagree with Balaji somewhere, but I personally wanted to digest the conversation, as it's a wide-ranging and cohesive picture that gives the appearance of being correct. Eric Jorgenson is an investor, business builder, startup growth strategist and the author of "The Almanack of Naval Ravikant". He also runs the online Leverage Course which I'm attending right now. In this conversation, we discuss both Naval Ravikant's wisdom, why and how Eric curated it into a book that I highly recommend, as well as how the Leverage Course came about. They don't teach you this kind of material in business schools or in any executive development or leadership programs. And yet, I would have loved to have had access to this kind of material 15 or 20 years ago. I firmly believe that many of these tools, models and insights are going to be fundamental for surviving and thriving in the world we live in. We also explored areas such as WEB03, crypto and the concept of permissionlessness. A number of projects that I'm actively working on today owe quite a lot of their design and the momentum behind them to Eric and his materials. What is Covered: - How the idea to curate Naval Ravikant's reflections into a book came about and the results it produced - The concept of premissionlessness and who are the gatekeepers in today's world - The mental model of leverage and how to reinvest in leverage - WEB03 and its impact on future society Key Takeaways and Learnings: - There's a lot of ways to earn money if you unbundle the concept of a career, and all you're trying to do is get money in the most suitable way possible for your particular set of tastes and interests - Permissionlessness is an important concept to embrace, because the Internet of meritocracy and WEB03 technology is making opportunity more global and more universally available by the day. - You can continually reinvest in leverage and go from 1x productivity to 10x or to 100x productivity. This type of leverage is not leverage over somebody. We are all somebody else's leverage, this is a mutually beneficial agreement between all of us that results in consumer surplus Links and Resources Mentioned in This Episode: - Almanck of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness, by Eric Jorgenson https://www.navalmanack.com/ - Leverage Course by Eric Jorgenson https://www.ejorgenson.com/leverage - Connect with Eric Jorgenson on Twitter https://twitter.com/ericjorgenson - Principles: Life and Work by Ray Dalio https://www.amazon.com/Principles-Life-Work-Ray-Dalio/dp/1501124021 - How Not How: The Formula to Achieve Bigger Goals Through Accelerating Teamwork, by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy https://www.amazon.com/Who-Not-How-Accelerating-Teamwork/dp/B08KYKR23H/ - Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital, by Carlota Perez https://www.amazon.com/Technological-Revolutions-Financial-Capital-Dynamics/dp/1843763311/ - The Infinite Machine: How an Army of Crypto-Hackers is Building the Next Internet with Ethereum https://www.amazon.com/Infinite-Machine-Crypto-Hackers-Building-Internet/dp/B07XJ7WKXL/ - Drug Cartels, Vanguard and Goldman Sachs with Codie Sanchez on Jorgenson's Soundbox Podcast https://www.ejorgenson.com/podcast/drug-cartels-vanguard-goldman-sachs-codie-sanchez - Into the DAO with Simon Judd: How Index Coop is Building Crypto Index Products on Jorgenson's Soundbox Podcast https://www.ejorgenson.com/podcast/into-the-dao-with-simon-judd-how-index-coop-is-building-crypto-index-products - WaitButWhy and G64 Co-Founder Andrew Finn on How to Acquire a Free Company on Jorgenson's Soundbox Podcast https://www.ejorgenson.com/podcast/waitbutwhy-co-founder-andrew-finn-on-how-to-acquire-a-free-company - Chris Dixon and Naval Ravikant — The Wonders of Web3, How to Pick the Right Hill to Climb, Finding the Right Amount of Crypto Regulation, Friends with Benefits, and the Untapped Potential of NFTs on The Tim Ferris Show https://tim.blog/2021/10/28/chris-dixon-naval-ravikant/ - Bankless Podcast http://podcast.banklesshq.com/ - Mohnish Pabrai: Cloning, Learning from Charlie Munger, 100 Baggers on OutsideVoices Podcast https://outsidelens.com/mohnish-pabrai-cloning/ - Nicholas Thomas: The Return of Curiosity - Encounters with the Unknown on OutsideVoices Podcast https://outsidelens.com/nicholas-thomas-the-return-of-curiosity/ Connect with Mark Bidwell: - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/markbidwell/ - Twitter https://twitter.com/markehb

When I sat down with Tim, he'd recently returned from an intensive 10-day silent meditation retreat. While gone, he lost yet another close friend. He was, in his own words, in an incredibly "porous" place, leading more from the heart than the head, which was a bit of a major turnaround for him.We spent time deconstructing Tim's 10-day silent meditation experience, his struggles and awakenings, how it compared to psychedelic experiences and how, barring one major saving grace, his retreat may have sent him spiraling into a very bad place. We also talked about his experience with death, his decision to append audio of his departed friend, Terry Laughlin, which was recorded by Terry's daughters in the hospital during his final days of life to the end of Tim's recent podcast interview with Terry. Tim also shared his decision to take the TED stage, switching last minute to talk about something deeply painful and personal, and what that meant to him, his lens on legacy work (and how it landed with his family, who didn't know what he'd be talking about). I have shared multiple times on this podcast that I am a huge Tim Ferriss fan. "The Four-Hour Work Week" really changed the way I viewed my work and freedom goals. I also listen to his podcast. They are what's called "long-form" interviews in the podcasting world as he spends between 1.5 - 2.5 hours per interview. Joe Rogan conducts his interviews the same way. By spending so much time, Tim and Joe can really dig deep into their guest's life stories. I LOVE hearing these stories of challenge, obstacles, overcoming, learning, and victory. I always hear some one-liners and zingers too that I share on Instagram or Facebook. Plus, I hear some mindsets that I feel compelled to share here on the Smart Cleaning School Podcast. This episode is one such example, similar to "When You're Humble, You're Teachable".I encourage you to check out "How to Reinvent Yourself" from the Tim Ferris Show where he interviews former NBA star and member of the Big 3, Chris Bosh. In 2010, LeBron James made the decision to take his talents to South beach. Chris Bosh came with him from Toronto to join Dwyane Wade and Lebron. The Big 3 went on to win two out of four NBA titles in four consecutive years. I was always perplexed by Chris. He was a star in Toronto and seemed to disappear in the Miami hype with Lebron and D-Wade. He even changed his game to adapt. Chris was unselfish and ultimately, it paid off with 2 championship rings. Therefore, when I saw the interview with Tim, I had to check it out. Here are some observations about Chris from the interview. He is a voracious reader. Chris is so articulate and interesting. At one stage of the interview, he broke down why the league changed from playing bigs in the paint to shooters behind the arc (3-pointers). As I watched the game change as a fan, I was disappointed in the changes and never understood. That's when Chris broke it down. It was all sabermetrics and statistics. As an engineer, I loved it. This new style of play was more probable of winning games. It also had less injury and demanded a different type of athlete. I loved how intelligently Chris broke down the progression of the game to a non-basketball fan in Tim Ferriss. Tim shifted gears to life after basketball. This is the part that really taught me some valuable life lessons. Chris is a current ambassador for the NBA and has found himself complaining. Then he talked to a CEO who had survived cancer and got a totally different perspective and stop complaining. Previously, he had gone to Africa and India and saw real poverty. Chris made this comment. "India made the projects look like a five-star hotel." Chris then said this and it made Tim pause. "What do people say? You think you got problems? Well everyone put their problems on the table. You'll pick yours back up real quick." This is so profound as we all think we're going through the worst thing in our life. But there was always someone better off and there's probably 10 more that are worse off than you. Those 10 worse off souls could be in your community or somewhere else in the world. It's all perspective. If you're carrying a load right now and you feel like you can't push through. Get some perspective from Chris Bosh. He played with at least 3 Hall of Famers in LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Ray Allen and won two championships. Chris also won an Olympic Gold Medal, was an 11-time NBA All-Star, along with many other accolades. And he was complaining. Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

Back from the dead, or at least back since Episode 50, Nick G. hangs with his pal Dewey in the studio to talk about what you say to the Universe when the Universe speaks first. Probabilistically speaking, if you were born without your right hand, what are the odds that you would become a world-class concert pianist? You might be mistaken (and forgiven) for assuming that the chances would be relatively low. However, that's perhaps because you have not heard of my guest on this week's episode. Meet Nicholas McCarthy. Nicholas is a world-class concert pianist who has played all over the globe. He was born without his right hand. He was the first left-hand only graduate of the prestigious Royal College of Music in London. He has played alongside Coldplay at the opening ceremony for the 2012 Paralympic games, has a wonderful solo album, was a guest presenter at the BBC Proms, is a radio host and will soon launch his own podcast called "Of Note". He has also appeared on several prominent podcasts, including the Tim Ferris Show. Nicholas is hugely inspirational. In addition to this however (and as usual as this show's USP), I apply a risk lens to Nicholas' story and it provides some wonderful insights into the question: "how can you turn the odds of something you want to achieve to your favour?" We cover loads of great stuff in this incredible conversation: Nicholas' background growing and how he got interested in the piano (and some great insights on parenting here); The challenges that he faced in studying the piano at a world-class level (there were several!) Left-hand repertoire, the style of playing in which Nicholas specialises; The balance between talent and diligent practice; Risk and risk-taking; Much, much more I am delighted to bring this conversation to you and I hope you check out Nicholas' work.
