From notes of affirmation to gift cards, Portland nonprofit Wildly Kind aims to spread acts of kindness to strangers  LONG SYNOPSIS: Wildly Kind is on a mission to spread acts of kindness to strangers, not only in its home base of Portland but also across the nation and around the world. The Portland Tribune recently profiled the three-year-old nonprofit and the national media attention it received for a pop-up event it held in February, which involved setting up a phone booth for people to record anonymous messages of hope and encouragement for others to hear.  Executive director and founder Kayla Lamoreaux says Wildly Kind grew out of a desire to affirm and maintain her sobriety from alcohol through fostering “a community of kindness” by handing out flowers or self-care kits or paying for a stranger’s groceries at the check-out line. Wildly Kind has now grown to include volunteers, corporate sponsors and more than 100 “ambassadors” who go out to perform acts of kindness in more than 20 states and six countries. Ambassadors pay $20 a month to receive a branded t-shirt, a monthly newsletter with ideas for spreading kindness, priority sign-ups for pop-up events and other perks. Lamoreaux joins us to share more details about Wildly Kind and its unique nonprofit model.

QP: Oregon Ranks 35th Nationally in Return on Investment for Education Spending

Is more money the answer to Oregon's abysmal K-12 academic rankings?  The Heritage Foundation annually releases an Education Freedom Report Card, which ranks states according to school choice, academic transparency, regulatory freedom, and education spending. The report assesses what each state does well, identifies where it can improve, and suggests how local leaders can better address education issues.  Oregon ranks at or near the bottom of all states in each category, including 51st overall and 35th in return on investment for education spending. Oregon students' National Association of Education Progress (NAEP) scores rank 42nd in the country, even though Oregon spends above average per pupil annually (the 21st-most at $17,374 per student). Oregon also has a high ratio of non-teaching to teaching staff: There is one non-teacher for every two teachers in Oregon public schools.  In early October, the Portland Tribune reported that Oregon elementary students' academic proficiency remains “significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels, with only 31% of all Oregon students testing at proficiency in math, 43% in English and 29% in science.” The Tribune noted that while every state “experienced a decrease in average assessment scores…between spring 2019 and 2022,” “compared to every other state, Oregon was third last for improvement in reading test scores….” All children deserve effective educational options that meet their learning and developmental needs. Spending more money—in the same district schools that haven't helped students succeed for decades—isn't the answer. To show we're serious about improving education outcomes, Oregon should reinstate graduation requirements, provide school choice including open enrollment across public school districts, and minimize time and expenditures focused on non-academic services and initiatives.

The Pamplin Media Group announced Monday that the Portland Tribune and more than two dozen of its other local newspapers in Oregon had been sold to Mississippi-based Carpenter Media Group. As reported in Willamette Week, Ross Island Sand & Gravel, part of R.B. Pamplin Corp., has been under fire for its failure to refill the cavernous hole it dug while mining the Willamette River bottom from 1926 to 2001. The R.B. Pamplin Corp., which has a variety of business holdings,  had been struggling financially for some time. On the same day, EO Media Group, which runs 15 family-owned newspapers from Enterprise to Astoria, announced it would be cutting staff and looking into new ownership. We discuss these developments and their possible implications with Brent Walth, a long time investigative reporter who now teaches journalism and runs the Catalyst program at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism

“We should have the right to repair our stuff,” says Oregon Senator Janeen Sollman (D-Hillsboro). In an op-ed in the Portland Tribune, she made the case for Senate Bill 542, known as the Right to Repair bill. She says too often, when a device breaks the only option is to get a new one or take it back to the manufacturer or authorized repair technicians. Either option can be expensive and consumers should have the ability to do the repairs themselves, Sollman said. And to do that they need access to spare parts, repair documentation like the schematics and manuals, diagnostic software, and special tools. The Right to Repair bill was voted out of the Energy and Environment committee this week, which Sollman chairs. She joins us to tell us more about what the bill would do and the impact it could have for consumers.

Full Text: The ballot for November's election is filling up, and a lot of local governments are trying to reach into your pocket for more of your tax dollars. Some of them are real doozies, like Portland Community College's construction bond measure. In 2017, PCC voters approved $185 million in new property taxes for construction projects. In that Voters' Pamphlet, PCC boasted it had 78,000 students. Five years later, PCC now wants another $485 million of your money. In this year's Voters' Pamphlet, PCC reports it has only 50,000 students. In just five years, PCC has lost 28,000 students. It shouldn't be expanding; it should be shutting down campuses. PCC says some of the money will be used for “flexible hybrid learning options.” That means more online instruction and less in-class instruction. OPB reports 50% of PCC classes this fall will be a hybrid format. PCC doesn't need fancy building remodels if enrollment is down and many of its classes are taught online. PCC spent more than $6 million from the 2017 taxes to remodel a welding shop at its Rock Creek Campus. The welding shop remodel was completed just last year. Now, according to The Portland Tribune, PCC wants to use your tax money to tear down and rebuild the entire building. Apparently, that $6 million remodel was a waste of money. More money for modern buildings won't save PCC from declining enrollment. It's got bigger problems, and money management is one of them. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

Soon a task force of over 40 police and F.B.I. agents and the entire community of Oregon City were frantically searching for the missing girls. Jim Redden and Janine Robben reporters for the newly established Portland Tribune reported on the case and worked tirelessly to help solve the crime. QP: Oregon's Land is Overregulated

Coffee with Cascade

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2022 2:08

Full Text: Land use regulations in Oregon are adversely impacting the state's residents and economy. A quick glance at recent news headlines reveals as much. OPB reports that the Oregon Department of Transportation cannot repair key portions of Highway 101 along the Oregon coast due to a land use regulation that prohibits the fortification of highway infrastructure along the shoreline. Thanks to this regulation, parts of Highway 101 are literally crumbling into the ocean below, creating a public safety hazard. In Clackamas County, a faith-based addiction recovery facility is being shut down simply because it sits on land zoned for agriculture. According to the Portland Tribune, the facility was intentionally placed in a rural setting to limit access to drugs and alcohol for individuals in the program. To the county, though, this was irrelevant. Perhaps most alarmingly, The Oregonian revealed that Intel chose to expand its operations in Ohio rather than Oregon due in part to a lack of available land. The state's largest employer needed 1,000 acres for its new factory, but the biggest parcel zoned for industrial use in the Portland region was only 200 acres. Excessive regulation is preventing individuals, businesses, and even the government from using land productively. It's time for elected officials to take action and relax the stringent land use rules that are holding Oregon back. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

NY Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez DID NOT "vacation" in Newberg PRESS RELEASERyan Clark of the Portland Tribune reported the far left representative from the Big Apple just happened to be in the area last week for vacation. We don't believe it. But, that isn't the real story. What IS real, is the shocking attack on 4 decent office holders on the Newberg School Board. Held in May of this year, Board elections resulted in the addition of two new members, Renee Powell and Trevor DeHart. The new majority including Dave Brown, and Brian Shannon can now make some bold changes to policy, and they are dong it. Isn't that what happens in our form of government? We elect representatives and they vote. The vote may not be what we all want, but citizens are to adhere to specific protocols when dissenting viewpoints are expressed. At the very least, they are to be civil.Brian Shannon, Board Vice Chairman is straightforward and reminded his fellow board members of the fact, they won the election, and majority rules. The Left doesn't care about protocol. "To hell with the election," they say! They kick and scream until they get their way. What they really want is for students to rebel against their parents AND their government. Public schools have become distribution centers for far leftists, and the idea of losing ground is frightening for them, and it shows."Cancel Culture" on steroids.Wanting to keep classrooms neutral when it comes to political flags and banners, the four (4) majority members have been under attack for recommending the US National flag and the Oregon state flag be the only flags on permanent display in the school buildings, which is state law and recommended policy by the Oregon School Board Association.Portland-style Progressive activists did not disappoint, with their usual unkind verbal attacks and coordinated “cancel culture” strategies. ...Divide and conquer? The display of a myriad of flags representing political organizations, (Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ) are divisive, and creates potential issues between K-12 students, who are not even of voting age. It is obvious these issues are controversial, and even more disturbing not age appropriate or academic.BLM in School specifically takes issue with capitalism (honest work), and divides races based on skin color encouraging the collective, not the individual. In addition BLM is known to recruit minor students to participate in protest demonstrations, breaking laws if necessary. Parents and voters in the district expressed specific concern about this issue. That is why the board members won their election. What about their wishes? When in enough, enough? Recognize the absolute blatant hypocrisy of the Progressive Left.  When they lose an election, they cannot be civil, and honor the very governmental system in which they work. Oregonians should know by now, they are being played by packs of community thugs and bullies!Fortunately, these four board members will not be intimidated or deterred in their promises to stop the takeover of their school and community. At least this election was fair…they won! Support the show (https://www.parentsrightsined.com/support-the-cause.html)

Left-wing protesters chased down, attacked and unmasked a man they believe to be the right-wing author Andy Ngo in disguise during a downtown Portland protest on Friday, May 28.The Portland Tribune has not independently confirmed the fleeing man's identity, and Ngo did not immediately issue any public statements on the matter. One longtime protest observer told the Tribune he saw Ngo working out at a gym in a southeast Portland neighborhood one week ago, with gym staff reportedly greeting Ngo by name. The Friday evening protest — which had lasted for several uneventful hours, at least by Portland standards — had not been declared an unlawful assembly or riot by authorities as the clock neared 11:30 p.m., with the crowd of perhaps 100 marching through the city without any reports of property damage before returning to a staging area outside the Multnomah County Justice Center.Join your host Sean Reynolds, owner of Summit Properties NW and Reynolds & Kline Appraisal as he takes a look at this developing topic.Support the show (https://buymeacoff.ee/seattlepodcast)

Holy Sons is a one-man solo band built around Portland songwriter and drummer Emil Amos. Amos is notable for releasing "genre-bending" albums, according to LA Weekly music reviewer Chris Martins, and for being a prolific songwriter; one account in Spike Magazine suggests he has written over a thousand songs. Amos is also a multi-instrumentalist for groups such as Grails and Om and Lilacs & Champagne. Amos was born of the lo-fi home recording movement of the '80s and early '90s. Amos described the mission of his music as "facing your personal reality." Amos said in an interview that, beginning at age sixteen, he used drugs every single day and didn't let up for years. A music critic for The Guardian described him as a prolific songwriter and as having a "great voice". Reviewer Rob Cullivan of the Portland Tribune described Holy Sons' album Survivalist Tales to be an "ode to the dime novels in the early 1900s that peddled the stories of wilderness explorers," and described the music as "sonic wanderings" with "strange song structures." A review in the Portland Mercury described his music as "dark, languid psychedelia" and commented how Amos has "habitually been kept underground" with few live performances up until the last few years. His vocals have been compared to Neil Young but change personalities quite often. Willamette Week described the album Decline of the West as "a varied, meticulously constructed piece of avant-folk that stands.

Independent Journalism is a critically important part of maintaining a democratic society. Unfortunately, it seems that media has become increasingly dominated by a handful of major corporations and technology companies. In many cases, local journalism is the only remaining bridge to create an independent voice. Doug and Mark talk about the dynamics of local journalism and its importance to the community's overall health. Doug's business specializes in partnering with companies and non-profits to capture overhead cost savings without layoffs to fund growth and strengthen financial results. Schedule time with Doug to talk about your business at www.MeetDoug.Biz [Music] [Introduction] Welcome to the terminal value Podcast where each episode provides in depth insight about the long term value of companies and ideas in our current world. Your host for this podcast is Doug Utberg, the founder and principal consultant for Business of Life, LLC. Doug: Welcome to the terminal value podcast. I have Mark Garber with us. Mark is the chief publisher for Pamplin Media Group, which is a local media chain, I think you'd say for the Portland metropolitan area. And Mark and I are here today to talk about the importance of local journalism, not just to the Portland area, but really to pretty much any area. Mark, welcome to the show. And thank you for coming on. Mark: Thanks, Doug. Glad to be here. Doug: So tell me a little bit how has the pimply Media Group been, you know, how is the vault? Everybody wants to talk about COVID. But just in general, the, you know, the technical turmoil, the technology turmoil that's been happening for the last 15 years. How is this impacted? pamphlet? Because, of course, it's a diversified set of newspaper news publications, but there has to have been an impact. Mark: Oh, yeah, the technology, as you know, dramatically changed what we do. And local journalism. And you know, it really goes back, Doug for 25, 30 years. If you think back to the very beginnings of, of online content, and newspapers, actually, were some of the first entities to jump into online news. You know, I started publishing news online.  Doug: Yeah. Mark: And so we were really competing with ourselves for a number of years in terms of giving our product away. Doug: Yeah. Mark: Online while we were still charging people to read it in print. So but you're right, that is really accelerated. I'd say, you know, since you know, the mid 2000s.  Doug: Yeah.  Mark: It's really changed the newspaper world. And we actually, with our 25, local newspapers, we have more people now, who read us digitally than who read us in print, we still have, you know, hundreds of 1000s of people read us and brand. Doug: Yeah.  Mark: But we have more than that, who read us online? Doug: Yeah. yeah, that's, and yeah, I mean, what are some of the adaptations even making I mean, because, you know, I think, you know, of course, we'll get to the importance of the local journalism, because I obviously think it's important because I subscribe to the local journalists, and, you know, and to the, I actually do the all digital all access package, to subscribe, not just to the Portland Tribune and the Newburgh graphic, which is where I live, but also the broader Metropolitan papers, just because I think it's really important to understand what's happening in the different local communities. Just, you know, that tell me a little bit about, you know, just kind of a about the adaptations that Pamplin has made to, you know, to stay in the game. Mark: Yeah, and I'll try to not get too too technical in what we do. But obviously, it's changed our entire workflow as far as how we, how we distribute the news. Doug: Yeah.  Mark: And so, you know, in the old days, where there was a daily newspaper, or weekly newspaper, or twice weekly, whatever the frequency was, I mean, everything was geared toward meeting a...

Sept 10, 2020: Thousands Flee Western Fires

AM Quickie

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2020 7:41

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: As the American West burns, scientific experts warn of rising global temperatures. At least one Democratic governor has had it with climate change deniers. Meanwhile, Why did Donald Trump spend so much time on the phone with Bob Woodward? Someone must have warned him it might not be a good idea – I mean, right? And lastly, police leadership in Rochester, New York, takes early retirement after public outrage over another killing by officers. More and more cops are doing it: resigning, that is. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Thousands flee Western fires Nearly one hundred wildfires are burning millions of acres across the American west, destroying towns and prompting mass evacuations. Eerie images showed red and orange skies filled with ash from the San Francisco Bay to the outskirts of Portland and beyond. In Colorado, the fires still smoldered under a fourteen-inch blanket of snow that fell suddenly in a storm the other night. California and Oregon are suffering some of the worst at this time, but fires also raged across Washington State, Nevada, Utah, and Montana. Compared to the same point in last year’s fire season, state officials said, California has endured a two thousand percent increase in acres burned. And there are still four months left in the fire season. California Governor Gavin Newsom said he had no more patience left for climate change deniers. Oregon Governor Kate Brown said her state was facing what could be the largest loss of life and property due to fire in its history. The entire county of Clackamas (Clack-Uh-Mass) outside of Portland, comprising over four hundred and twenty thousand people, was put on notice to evacuate. The entire city of Medford, population eighty-two thousand, was also under an evacuation order, along with prisons and nursing homes elsewhere in the state. Tens of thousands of people lost power due to downed lines in Oregon; in California, more than one hundred thousand are waiting to have their electricity service restored. Hot, dry, and windy weather accelerated the spread of the fires and slowed containment efforts. In Oregon, six of the largest firefighting helicopters were unavailable to aid in the all-hands effort because they had been sent to Afghanistan to help with the ongoing military occupation, according to the Portland Tribune. In California, at least fourteen firefighters have been injured, and one is reportedly in critical condition. For those directly threatened by the fires, local news radio is proving to be indispensable. Separately, the United Nations World Meterological Organization reported that global temperatures risk exceeding a limit set by the Paris climate change agreement in 2015. And some twelve thousand people in Europe’s largest refugee camp, on the Greek island of Lesbos, were left homeless once again after a fire tore through their tents. Arson was suspected. Trump blabs to Woodward It’s a big week for books about Donald Trump. First Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, came out with his tell-all. Now excerpts are coming out from veteran Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward’s book on Trump, titled “Rage.” Trump apparently spoke on tape with Woodward for eighteen hours, and even more than usual, seems to have let his guard down. Among Woodward’s revelations are an apparent secret nuclear weapons development program, possibly in violation of international treaties. But what captured headlines yesterday was Trump’s open admission to Woodward that he purposefully played down the threat of the coronavirus even after being briefed on its deadliness in January. At a time when Trump knew the virus would be deadly and dangerous, he was telling the public it was no more serious than a seasonal flu. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden was quick to respond to the revelations. Speaking at a United Auto Workers training facility in Warren, Michigan, Biden lambasted Trump’s fatal negligence, noting that the news came on a day when America hit one hundred and ninety thousand dead from COVID. Biden said Trump, "knew how deadly it was. He knew and purposely played down. Worse, he lied to the American people. He knowingly and willingly lied about the threat it posed to the country for months. He knew how deadly it was. He had the information. He failed to do his job on purpose. ... If he acted two weeks sooner, fifty-four thousand lives would have been spared in March and April alone. ... It's beyond despicable. It’s a dereliction of duty. It’s a disgrace." Well put, Joe. Rochester police leaders resign Top police in Rochester, New York, have voluntarily resigned amid protests and scrutiny of the department’s treatment of Daniel Prude, a Black man suffering a mental health crisis who died after officers put a hood over his head. Prude was forty-one years old. He died in March but video footage was released by his family’s lawyers last week, sparking outrage. Seven police officers have been suspended from the city’s force, according to the Washington Post. And New York attorney general Letitia James said she would impanel a grand jury as part of an ongoing investigation. Then on Tuesday, Rochester Police Chief La’Ron Singletary and Deputy Chief Joseph Morabito sudden announced their imminent retirement. Per the Post, they are only the latest in a growing list of police resignations: Chiefs in Atlanta, Louisville and Seattle lost their jobs or resigned amid the public outcry, and also on Tuesday, the police chief in Dallas announced her plans to step down later this year. An attorney for Prude’s family, Antonio Romanucci, called Chief Singletary’s retirement an important step and said Prude’s treatment was inhumane, and the subsequent coverup was unacceptable. Joe Prude, Daniel’s brother, has said he called 911 seeking help after his brother disappeared. He told NPR, " I didn’t call them to come help my brother die. I called them to come help me get my brother some help.". AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: A new whistleblower complaint alleges top Homeland Security officials doctored intelligence assessments to suit Donald Trump’s agenda. The complaint, reported by CNN, says acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf told officials to play down Russian interference and instead focus on China and Iran. Agents were also told to downplay the threat posed by white nationalist groups and instead hype the threat from Antifa and anarchist groups. Surprise! US military commanders announced the draw-down of forces in Iraq by approximately one-half, to three thousand soldiers. The withdrawal will begin later this month and has been long in planning. At the height of the war, the US had more than one hundred and fifty thousand troops in Iraq. So while Trump will brag about this on the campaign trail, the biggest military draw-downs took place before his tenure. Vice President Mike Pence will attend a fundraiser in Montana next week hosted by a wealthy couple who have promoted the Q-Anon conspiracy theory. Caryn and Michael Borland have both shared Q memes on social media, according to the Associated Press. Together they have donated more than two hundred and twenty thousand dollars to Trump’s reelection campaign. Cukoo money is still green. Attorney General Bill Barr yesterday defended as "perfectly legitimate" the Justice Department’s shocking decision to intervene in a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump. The complaint was filed last November by E. Jean Carroll, who says Trump lied about raping her in the 1990s. This week the Justice Department effectively took over Trump’s defense in the case, an unprecedented intervention that Barr told NBC News was perfectly normal. Nothing to see here folks, provided you think there’s nothing wrong with the Attorney General using public resources to clean up after Trump’s many abuses. That’s all for the AM Quickie.
