Send us a textWhen we had Matt on the podcast at the end of 2024 there were several topics we never got a chance to talk about. Two of them, running form and breathing, are things that Matt is passionate about because he believes they can make a big difference for runners. We obviously had to have Matt on again to talk about these topics, and he also talks about the importance of the foot and arch.A little reminder about Matt's book. Built to Run is a book to help runners improve form, mobility and strength so that they can run injury free more often… because we all know we'll eventually get some kind of niggle, but the idea is that we're not sidelined for months at a time. The book has 8 chapters, starting with an explanation of your body as a system, moving on to training mobility and strength, and ending with breathing (yes, we can actually train that!) and common running injuries.Dr. Matthew Silver is a coach, educator, physical therapist, and founder of Alpha Project Phyzio & Performance. He has been a distance runner for the past 13 years. While a freshman in high school, he fell in love with distance running and hasn't looked back since. He was first exposed to physical therapy after suffering from runner's knee and low back pain while running cross country. After high school, he ran collegiately for 2 years where he set his college's 8K record and made the all-conference team. This was bittersweet as he could not finish the last two years of his collegiate career due to this recurrent and persistent knee and low back pain despite going to multiple medical practitioners. Believing his competitive running career was over, he decided to focus on his education by learning as much as he could about running injuries and physical therapy. He started to notice a trend of runners getting prescribed cookie-cutter exercises, being told they need “new shoes”, or, even worse, being advised to stop running altogether to avoid their pain, rather than addressing the underlying dysfunction that is causing their pain. Because of this, he has developed a unique interest in injury prevention and rehabilitation through movement quality.Link for 20% discount on Caffeine Bullet https://caffeinebullet.com/RUNNINGBOOKDiscount automatically applied and visible on checkoutSupport the showAny feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. Running is a high-intensity sport—more than just putting one foot in front of the other, it's about understanding mechanics, building strength, and managing stress on the body. In this episode, Dr. Andrew Fix is joined by Dr. Matt Silver, physical therapist and author of “Built to Run,” to discuss the common injuries runners face and the unique challenges of the sport. Pointing out running as a high-intensity activity—essentially a series of single-leg hops—they explore how this repetitive motion places significant stress on the body, often leading to injuries like runner's knee, IT band syndrome, shin splints, and Achilles tendinopathy.   Dr. Silver shares his journey of overcoming running injuries and how it inspired his work at Alpha Project Phyzio & Performance, helping runners achieve longevity in their sport. He points out the important role of strength training in injury prevention, and debunks the myth that stretching alone can resolve running-related pain. Instead, he explains how strengthening muscles and tendons enhances their spring-like qualities, enabling better recoil and support during runs.   Join Dr. Fix and Dr. Silver's discussion to gain insights that'll indeed help you optimize your performance as a runner and stay injury-free.   Quotes “Once we understand that running is essentially a single-leg hop repeated over and over, it's clear that it's a jumping exercise—a high-intensity exercise. I can't think of any other sport that involves as much single-leg jumping as running does.” (07:59 | Dr. Matt Silver) “We have to ensure we build strength and think of the muscles and Achilles as muscles and rubber bands. The Achilles acts like a spring—there needs to be a certain level of tension there. So, when we hit the end range, it can contract out of it, making us run more efficiently. If your tendons are loose, you're going to have to work a lot harder to run.” (17:37 | Dr. Matt Silver)  “Strength training is important—you'll gain a lot of adaptation just from that alone. But something else that I think would really help runners is jump training. If we know running is essentially jumping, then we need to incorporate jump training into our routine. It's not only great for becoming a more efficient runner and training your tendons to contract and relax the way we want them to, but it's also fantastic for your bone health.” (20:24 | Dr. Matt Silver) “Before we even talk about how your foot's hitting the ground, we need to address your running form. Shoe wear does play a role in this—if you're wearing a shoe with a massively built-up heel, you're probably going to heel strike more aggressively. But if you're overstriding, that's what we need to fix first before even discussing how your foot is hitting the ground.” (37:23 | Dr. Matt Silver)   Links Connect with Dr. Matt Silver: https://www.alphaprojectphyzio.com/built-to-run-book https://www.instagram.com/alphaprojectphyzio/ https://www.amazon.com/s?k=running+rewired&hvadid=241596968295&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9028754&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=4347788781906826674&hvtargid=kwd-377142194578&hydadcr=22534_10353871&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_4ngqsthky4_e https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeVgsbB_TW4 SideKick Tool: https://bit.ly/4a6CqJS   Movemate:

Today, we've invited Matt Silver on the show to give us a clear overview of the Mexico market, cross-border transportation, the growth of Mexico's freight volume, and the increasing opportunity of investing and expanding your freight business in this market.   About Matt Silver Matt Silver is the Co-Founder and CEO of Cargado, an early stage technology startup revolutionizing how U.S.-Mexico cross-border logistics is executed. Silver is an industry leader in cross-border freight whose career spans over a decade, deeply rooted in the industry since his teenage years. His expertise lies in integrating technology with traditional logistics practices, emphasizing the industry's evolution while acknowledging the importance of relationships. Matt's notable career began at Coyote, where he was instrumental in establishing and leading the Mexico department, which he helped integrate into UPS in 2015. In 2018, he founded Forager, a Chicago-based venture-backed freight tech company that revolutionized freight movement between the US, Mexico, and Canada. Forager's platform provided comprehensive solutions for shippers and carriers, powered by a uniquely built internal TMS, enhancing the overall efficiency of cross-border freight. In early 2022, Forager was acquired by Arrive Logistics, marking a significant stride in cross-border logistics. This acquisition combined Forager's cross-border expertise with Arrive's domestic network, accelerating growth and establishing Arrive as a leader in North American cross-border logistics. At the end of September 2023, Matt left Arrive and embarked on a new project with a focus on further innovating U.S.-Mexico cross-border logistics. His vision and leadership continue to shape the future of U.S.-Mexico logistics. You can find more about his journey and his perspective on the industry through his newsletter (https://mattsilver.substack.com/), his LinkedIn profile (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattpsilver/), or on X (https://x.com/mattsilver).

US imports from Mexico are surging. Former President Trump's tariffs on China, as well as the renegotiated USMCA treaty, have encouraged supply chains to move to North America. Then Covid hit, and that re-energized interest in "nearshoring" or "friendshoring" as an alternative to China. So how much further can US-Mexico trade go? What kinds of goods are being imported from Mexico? And how does the trade boom interact with Mexico's shaky security situation? On this episode we speak with Matt Silver, the CEO and co-founder of Cargado, which is building technology to facilitate cross-border freight. Silver, a former freight broker with a long history of doing business in Mexico, talks to us about what he's seeing on the ground, who's investing, plus the extraordinarily complicated process of getting goods across the border.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
