On this episode of This vs. That, we explore the fascinating tension between fear of man and fear of God with special guest Ed Welch and guest co-host Jonathan Holmes, Executive Director of Fieldstone Counseling. We trace Ed's journey of writing his influential book "When People Are Big and God Is Small," which began as a response to the codependency movement of the 1980s. Through our conversation, we discover how Ed's perspective shifted from a sharp critique of cultural trends to a more pastoral approach as he began seeing these themes everywhere in Scripture. We discuss the evolution from codependency to today's independent mindset, and explore how the fear of God isn't about being afraid, but rather about awe and reverence that draws us closer to Him. Through personal stories and biblical wisdom, we unpack what it means to love Jesus more than we love the approval of others. ---  Anchored Virtual provides practical help to those hurting, by anchoring their hope in Jesus, and helping others gain a better understanding of his promises. Jeremy is joined today by Jonathan Holmes to talk about why identity is such a hot topic today, and what it means for us as Christian parents of kids facing enormous cultural pressure. How do we give our kids a gospel-centric identity in Christ? Do we need to spend more time and effort building a family identity to combat peer-pressured identity formation? How can the church start to take back ground on gender, identity, and the Christian sexual ethic? These topics are hard to talk about, because so many people want to focus solely on the exceptions to the rule, and forgo talking about the general teaching, so it was a blessing to wrestle deeply with these issues with Jonathan. This conversation needs to be happening way more often, especially for those of us with children being impacted by an outside world heavily influenced by the enemy. There are a ton of reasons why people walk away from God or, as some say, “lose their faith.” Very often it is related to difficulties and trials that they face which end up being too strong for them to bear. In such cases, some people despair and crack under the pressure and may even blame God for their circumstances. The fact that all of us likely know someone like this punctuates the point that we need to have our theology worked out before we face deep waters. We need to be prepared knowing that for a believer, it is possible to go from despairing of life to the worship of God. As we look at 1 Samuel 16:14 to 19:17 on Sunday, we'll see David in a precarious situation that threatened to shipwreck his relationship with God. The narrative will help us see that we can indeed trust his perfect plan. This message will also prepare us for a look at Psalm 59 next Sunday where David writes a song about the experiences we'll look at this week. Series: The Great Exchange Todd Dugard Message: 2 – From despair to worship: Part 1 Harvest Bible Chapel Text: 1 Samuel 16:14-19:17 Sept 22, 2024 To go from despairing of life to the worship of God I must… …accept that “bad” things happen to “good” people (19:1a) Why do bad things happen to good people? That only happened once, and he volunteered. R. C. Sproul …surround myself with faithful friends (19:1b-7) Matthew 10:36–37 Biblical friendship exists when two or more people, bound together by a common faith in Jesus Christ, pursue him and his kingdom with intentionality and vulnerability. Rather than serving as an end in itself, biblical friendship serves primarily to bring glory to Christ, who brought us into friendship with the Father. It is indispensable to the work of the gospel in the earth, and an essential element of what God created us for. Jonathan Holmes, The Company We Keep …acknowledge the sovereignty of God (19:8-10) Under divine providence everything ultimately was attributed to him; why not say he did it in the first place? Walter Kaiser, Hard Sayings of the Bible God brough redemption and forgiveness to anyone who would believe. It goes against all the normative patterns that we follow like power and strength are better than weakness, winning is better than losing, big is better than small, health is better than sickness, comfortable living is better than suffering, to gain is better than to suffer sacrifice and loss...The message that we proclaim, the message of the gospel, is based in a complete reversal of power and conquest. The cross of Jesus Christ, a symbol of death and shame and weakness and suffering, stands at the heart of our faith. David Barker Isaiah 53:10a Romans 8:18 Romans 8:28 …trust his perfect plan (19:11-17) Psalm 59:9

Our series on mental health has helped us understand its connection with human dignity. Though God created us as perfect, embodied beings, sin has marred the human experience holistically, not only crippling our relationship with God, but with our bodies as well. As a result, mental illness is a part of living in a broken world, but the gospel has not left us without hope. While we live in the presence of spiritual and physical brokenness, Christ has promised to redeem us, making right what has gone wrong, and that includes our bodies. In the meantime, we live in the tension of what God has already done in providing Jesus, and what he has promised to do in making all things new. And he has given us the gift of the Church and each other to help us as we walk in this world. Specifically, for those who may want specialized help, the Lord has provided counselors to assist us in the daily fight to grow in Jesus in the midst of both our spiritual and mental struggles.  Joining us on today's episode to discuss the role of counseling in the church are Jonathan Holmes and Brad Hambrick. Jonathan Holmes is the founder and executive director of Fieldstone Counseling in Northeast, Ohio. Before founding Fieldstone, he served as a pastor for 15 years. He graduated with his M.A. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and has authored and contributed to a number of books.Brad Hambrick serves as the pastor of counseling at The Summit Church in Durham, N.C. Integrating Biblical Counseling in the Local ChurchIn this episode Mike and special guests, Jonathan Holmes and Andrew Dealy, focuses on integrating biblical counseling within local churches. Hosted without his co-host, Mike is at the made administer conference, featuring guests Jonathan Holmes of Fieldstone Counseling and Andrew Dealy of the Austin Stone Counseling Center. They discuss the importance of biblical counseling in churches, their personal journeys into counseling within a church context, and practical aspects of setting up and running counseling centers that are both clinically sound and deeply rooted in gospel principles. The podcast also touches on the challenges of maintaining a robust partnership between counseling centers and churches, ensuring community integration for those counseled, and how they care for their counselors. Key insights include the necessity of a community in healing, the value of counselors sharing their own struggles, and the concept of counseling as a temporary 'rest stop' on a longer journey of spiritual growth and community integration. I found it confronting listening to Tova O'Brien's guest this past week as she described the experiences of staying in motel emergency accommodation with a young daughter. From my relative privilege (of choosing the right parents and having things turn out ok for me so far), I find it hard to imagine being in this situation. But it's the reality for nearly 6,500 people across Aotearoa, half of whom are children.  This is an emergency, and the problem is complex. The solution will require more than simply building more houses because the underlying issues are more complex than that. Related to this is a proposal from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to review the building consent process in New Zealand. This is something I'd like to look at in more detail because we must get the balance right. In 2023, MBIE sought public submissions in response to an options paper on a review of the building consent system. This week MBIE published a summary of the 270 submissions received. At the other end of the spectrum, I caught up with Jonathan Holmes about living in a Certified Passive House Premium home and working on assessing the embodied carbon in our buildings.  Other links for this week's podcast episode: Jonathan Holmes on LinkedIn Holmes House, Sustainable Engineering Hawea Flat, Home Style Green Be sure to register for Reimagine Buildings '24

In Psalm 31, David cried out to God for mercy. In this sermon, Jonathan Holmes helps us to see how David was honest about his need, but he also acknowledged God's goodness and faithfulness, trusting that God would meet him in his circumstances. In the same way that David looked forward to the coming Messiah for his ultimate salvation, believers today look back at the finished work of Christ on the cross. When Christ cried out for mercy, he received none in order that all who trust in him may receive mercy in abundance. Christ bore our punishment completely so that we may claim his reward.
