What do you do when you've heard something from God, and you know it was God because your spirit lept within you - but it hasn't rained...yet? Noah was told to build an Ark and was 600 years old before he entered it and the rains came. But here's the kicker..he was somewhere between 500 and 600 when he was told to build the ark. Some scholars say that it took anywhere from 50-70 years for it to be completed. So what do you do when you're faced with a task that seems daunting, that takes years to be completed and is hasn't rained yet? How do you deal with the onslaught of lies from the enemy? In today's episode, host Taylor Phillips shares encouragement from her situations of building when there's not rain on the horizon, as well as encourages you with a word from the Lord. Just like Soldiers or Athletes, we're always training for the battle or game (opportunity). Coach John Wooden once said "When opportunity comes, it's too late to prepare." For too long, we as Christians have been conditioned toward religion - not relationship. As a result, we have failed to show up in the world around us shining the light of Christ. From business owners to media, we've been told that the world is too dark and it's impossible to show up and impact the world. We see darkness all over, but we don't counteract that darkness with the Light of Christ and the Truth of His word - we sit down, complain, and only use our gifts within the four walls of the church. In today's episode, Author and Producer Shivawn Mitchell joins me and we have a conversation about prophetically producing what is on God's heart, and how we show up in the entertainment industry as Christians. We talk about the importance of connecting with people, storytelling as Christians, and how we can start showing up in the world of Entertainment and Business. The neat thing is: it doesn't just apply to the entertainment industry. It applies to business, to education, to home and more. If you feel like God has called you to ministry outside of the church but you've been afraid to step out thinking you've heard wrong, or you want encouragement to continue stepping out, this is for you. About Shivawn: Creativity, filmmaking and mental health wellness are key themes in Shivawn Mitchell's life and career. The Virginia native and Norfolk State University & Wilkes University graduate wants to be remembered as a woman who gave others permission to live their dreams. As the author of two Books, Producer whose work has been seen on PBS, Essence Festival, Apple TV, Fire Tv and more. Marlena Banks of Big Idea Food joins me for today's episode, and y'all...it's J U I C Y. A few weeks ago she had a revelation from the TV Show "Breaking Bad" and shared about it on her IG. So I asked her to come and share the revelation she had on my podcast. In the midst of it, we talk about obedience and what it looks like. We talk about who we're doing it for - ourselves or God, and how the enemy loves to blur the lines. We talk about the importance of being obedient in the small things, and how, often, what God asks us to do seems small - but in reality, it's a large seed. If you've ever said: "my calling doesn't matter because it's not as big as theirs." "that doesn't fit into my overall vision, so I don't think it's God." If I were a betting woman, I would bet you've used the phrase “I need to…” followed by a goal you want to achieve numerous times. Maybe it's “I need to get up earlier,” or “I need to lose weight,” or “I need to keep a better work schedule,” or “I need to do dishes more often.” Or maybe, you've got a goal that you want to achieve, but looking at your schedule you're not sure whether that's achievable or not. Researchers from Duke University say that over 40% of what we do isn't determined by decisions, but habits. So, as you can see, habits are important for our daily lives. Without habits in place, we don't carry out those goals we've set at the new year, or any time throughout the year. Instead of making goals and hoping willpower will help us through, we need to set goals and habits to start implementing. In today's episode, I share more about habits - the reason (other than the grace of God) I'm able to do all that I do. We talk about what habits are, establishing new habits, and why they're important. If you're ready to create new habits and crush those goals - this episode is for you! Coming off of spending time at Youth Camp with some teenagers who learned how to develop their battle cry, I felt like it was time that we had the conversation we've needed to have for awhile: it's battle time. We've spent far too long allowing an enemy who is defeated to tell us that there is no need to fight. E.M. Bounds once said "Prayer fills man's emptiness with God's fullness. Prayer fills man's poverty with God's riches. Prayer puts away man's weakness with the coming of God's strength. It banishes man's littleness with God's greatness. Prayer is God's plan to supply man's great and continuous need with God's great and continuous abundance." (Purchase his book here) Prayer is such a vital part in our walk with God because it's a connection to the heart of the Father. There are two things I've heard the most when it comes to prayer: “I don't know how to pray,” and “I don't feel comfortable praying out loud.” And both of these are valid concerns. BUT I think that we've made prayer such a production that, if we don't do it the way we hear someone else praying, we're not praying correctly. I believe that this is exactly where the enemy wants us: afraid we're doing it wrong, so we don't do it at all. I believe this because of what James 5:16 says “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” So in today's episode, I want to give you a few prayer tools for your secret place. We've been conditioned to put trials and suffering on levels. Culture says that, unless we've suffered a certain amount, we need to get over what we're going through. Church culture sometimes ignores what people are going through and blanket scripture over the top, almost dismissing the real thing someone is enduring. We can all agree that 2020 was a year of trials for everyone. Some dealt with more than others, but we suffered just the same. In today's podcast, your host Taylor Phillips interviews Keagan Hayden about trials, truth, and triumph: how we walk through trials, how we can move toward truth and walking through them in God's word, and how we can walk through trials with others. We've found ourselves amid cultural issues more than we have in the past. We're hearing good sounding phrases that are partly true, but they're not truth. Christians find themselves wondering how to defend what they believe when phrases like "don't judge, just love" come up. So how do we defend what we believe? It starts with rightly dividing God's Word. 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to study to show ourselves approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. It's important that we study scripture, what it means, background, who it's intended for, and more.
