This insight is a profound reminder of the deeper spiritual growth that can occur through adversity. Podcast Intro: My guest Katie Jones is quite inspiring and her story had me holding my breath and fighting back tears. Life is often a tapestry of unexpected events and trials that test our resilience and faith and Katie has that in common with many of us. Early in her marriage, she and her husband discovered they were not able to conceive and the doctors could not give them an answer as to why they could not. Katie struggled with God about wanting to be a mom. As she and her husband try to discern God's leading He opens their hearts to fostering children. Despite the challenges that come with fostering children they fall in love with the kids and the beauty in breakthroughs and progress in the children's healing journey. As they walk out their fostering journey with the Lord, they shifted their desires to align with what they believed were God's plans for them, no biological children but rather the blessing of foster children. Her story takes a dramatic turn when she unexpectedly becomes pregnant. This news was hard to wrap her mind around and is initially met with disbelief but that soon turned to joy, and Katie and her husband began to let themselves be excited about having a biological child. But their joy and happiness were severely tested at the birth of her sweet baby boy. Within hours both Katie and their newborn Malachi were being monitored for serious problems. Within a day or two they are both diagnosed with sepsis and things began to quickly and drastically change for them both. Katie had to make a life or death decision that would prevent her from having any future children and Malachi would endure a last ditch effort that involved cutting into both the carotid and the jugular arteries, a high-risk procedure that would prevent any further use of those two arteries in the future. One of the more profound moments, for me during our conversation was when she shares how she was praying with her husband, their family, church family and those who have supported them in the last couple of days. They're praying together as Malachi is preparing to go in for this procedure, what they call an ECHMO procedure and she verbally takes a stance by telling God out loud, God if you take his life, I still trust you. That was yet another place in our conversation where I had to fight back tears because she stands in faith knowing that her one and only son is at risk during a medical procedure and that she has no future opportunity to have biological children. Katie's story is an incredible testament to resilience, faith, and the power of community. She emphasizes the importance of the church's support and the way God is working through the church as a global community of believers. Her experience underscores the belief that while God does not promise an easy life, His gives us the beauty of HIs presence and His faithfulness and that offers us comfort, peace and hope in the darkest of times. Listen in to Katie's message of who the God of the Holy Bible is in the midst of loss and uncertainty and may your faith be encouraged for greater intimacy with Jesus. We kick things off with results and analysis of Don Samuels vs Ilhan Omar in the 5th congressional district primary. Josh breaks out his google docs. We list all the factors working against Samuels in 2024, compared to his previous campaign in 2022. We cover Katie Jones's victory in Minneapolis's only competitive state legislative race (house district 61A) - and what the results can tell us about Council Member Katie Cashman's Ward 7 reelection campaign in 2025. Taylor joins us for the second half hour, delivering her unique brand of tabloid political coverage. Which 61A campaign turned down the endorsement of Mayor Jacob Frey? The CDC's Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain excludes those undergoing cancer treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care. In doing so, it seems to give the impression that pain seen in cancer is inherently different than pain seen in other conditions and that those with cancer may not have the same risk for opioid use disorder as compared to other conditions. Today's podcast tackles these issues and more with three amazing guests: Katie Jones, Jessica Merlin, and Devon Check. We start off the conversation by talking about whether patients with cancer and cancer pain are really that different, and their paper that was just published on January 11th in JAMA Oncology showing that substance use disorder is not uncommon in individuals with cancer. After discussing screening options for substance use disorder, we go on to talk about both the treatments for it and the issues that arise. In particular, we talk about Katie's and Jesica's paper in NEJM titled “Juggling Two Full-Time Jobs — Methadone Clinic Engagement and Cancer Care,” which described the difficulty in managing cancer pain and methadone for opioid use disorder. Lastly, we discuss Katie's paper on substance use disorder in an aging population and how one can incorporate the 5 Ms (ie, matters most, medications, mind, mobility, and multicomplexity) into a framework for age-friendly care for older adults with substance use disorder. This week's guest is Katie Jones, a graphic designer from Manchester. We met Katie at the Manchester School of Art, where she is currently an associate lecturer. It's a role she adores, as she spends a lot of time doing something she loves while helping the next generation of designers. She enjoys it so much that in 2019, she scooped an MMU Teaching Award for 'Outstanding Feedback', the first teaching award the Art School has ever won. The School is where Katie studied her own art foundation and a degree in Graphic Design. During her course, she looked around at the other students and teachers and found a calling to create a magazine called Fresh – one that would shine a spotlight on diverse creatives. It's a side project that has since opened many doors, built skills and confidence, and introduced Katie to the wider creative industry. In fact, Fresh made Katie realise just how important it is to build her own community. And so, she's since become part of SLAN Collective, a global network of artists and designers who all support one another. She's also become one of the people behind Ladies, Wine & Design in Manchester – the networking group for women. Aside from these valuable hustles, Katie also runs a vegan food truck with her family. In this episode, we talk about the values and life lessons Katie inherited from her parents and two brothers. It's the way she holds herself, not conforming to any gender roles and why she has the strength and courage to pave her way – despite having that conversation with her mother, the one some of you know only too well. We also hear about side projects and why they can be so fruitful. About rebellion and artistic freedom. Of listening to your gut and not being afraid to change or quit something if it isn't working. Katie also shares why she will not accept the status quo and doesn't want to be pigeonholed into one field or merely picked out for the colour of her skin. It's a warm and honest conversation with someone who reminds us to count our blessings and counter these difficult times through the currency of kindness.

Find show notes here. Is money a barrier to launching your dream? This episode is the first in a series of three finance-focused conversations in my financial series where we're talking about how to think about spending your hard-earning money on a dream. Listeners have been telling me that time and money are among the biggest barriers to jumping into a God-shaped dream. That may be the reality for some, however, the reason I wanted to do this series was so we could have some real talk about this topic of finances (after realizing I've been neglecting it all this time). I brought in Money Coach Katie Jones this week, who shared her dreamer story in episode 215, and we're talking about how to think about your finances so you CAN invest in your dream in the future. This is Katie's passion and I know you're going to get so much out of this conversation where we talk about: The secret to getting started on a dream even when you feel like you don't have the money Underlying motivations that could be influencing your desire to spend, and The importance of identifying priorities to see if you're actually spending on what's most important to you.
