Today on the show we talk about something called the 'resource curse' and whether it is hindering economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador. And we ask folks what kind of economy do you want for the future?
In this episode, we speak with Yasha Maccanico a researcher and journalist at StateWatch, a UK-based charity focused on civil liberties, human rights and democracy in Europe. We talk about a proposed EU law that could make it easier for states to criminalise acts of solidarity with people on the move. Yasha also talks to us about abuses of state power in Europe under the guise of lowering immigration, the externalisation of the EU's borders in Africa, and much more. ---Get in touch--- Twitter: @FleetCivil Mastodon: @civilfleet@kolektiva.social Bluesky: @thecivilfleet.bsky.social Instagram: thecivilfleet info@civilfleet.com civilfleet.com --- Show notes --- For more on StateWatch, check out their work here: statewatch.org Follow them on BlueSky: @statewatch.bsky.social Ben misquotes the late left-wing politician Tony Benn, who once said: “The way a government treats refugees is very instructive, because it shows you how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it.” In fact, the phrase may have been misattributed to Tony Benn. You can watch one of Tony Benn's most famous speeches against the US-UK' illegal invasion of Iraq, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7ciGW7h7PI&ab_channel=PoliticsJOE Yasha mentions the an independent media company Bristol Cable. The Council is due to approve its position for negotiations with the European Parliament. The existing law has been criticised for failing to prevent the criminalisation of migration and acts of solidarity with migrants and refugees. The Belgian Council presidency presented a revised draft to other EU member states at the end of May, which would simplify the criminalisation of irregular entry, amongst other things. The draft will serve as the basis for further discussions within the Council, with Hungary now in the presidency role until the end of this year. ----- Viewpoint, Hindering humanitarianism: European Commission will not ensure protection for those aiding sans-papiers, Chris Jones (April 2017) https://www.statewatch.org/media/documents/analyses/no-311-facilitation-directive.pdf ----- The shrinking space for solidarity with migrants and refugees: how the European Union and Member States target and criminalize defenders of the rights of people on the move (TNI, Yasha Maccanico, Ben Hayes, Samuel Kenny, Frank Barat, September 2018) https://www.tni.org/files/publication-downloads/web_theshrinkingspace.pdf ----- Libya/elmasri: including full text of Shatz/Branco submission to the ICC against Italian ministers: http://www.statewatch.org/news/2025/february/italian-ministers-should-face-justice-for-freeing-fugitive-war-criminal-says-legal-complaint/ ----- Secrecy: http://www.statewatch.org/news/2024/november/italy-has-nullified-the-right-to-transparency-regarding-borders/ ----- Tunisia: http://www.statewatch.org/news/2024/november/tunisia-no-to-the-criminalisation-of-solidarity-with-migrants/ ----- Deportations (aka returns): http://www.statewatch.org/news/2025/january/deportations-new-role-for-frontex-as-eu-pushes-for-more-voluntary-returns/ ----- Egypt: http://www.statewatch.org/news/2025/january/eu-police-cooperation-with-egypt-sacrifices-people-s-rights-and-freedoms-for-security/ ----- “Outsourcing borders” externalisation bulletin project, bulletins and documents archive: https://www.statewatch.org/outsourcing-borders-monitoring-eu-externalisation-policy/ ----- To challenge border militarisation (with partners, 2023/24), Telling the story of EU border militarisation, https://www.statewatch.org/media/4000/eu-border-militarisation-narrative-guide.pdf ----- Europe's techno-borders (2023 with EuroMed Rights) https://www.statewatch.org/publications/reports-and-books/europe-s-techno-borders/ ----- Frontex and interoperable databases: knowledge as power? It's claimed sub-standard infrastructure is proving a major hindrance to tourism in the Shannon Estuary Region. It follows calls for a new council led strategy to increase marine based visitor attractions in Clare. The 102km area is shared between predominantly Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Tipperary and welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year. However, concern has been raised that there's been too much emphasis on land based attractions, at the expense of opening up more water based opportunities. In response, Clare County Council has pointed to an over €4m investment in the Vandeleur Walled Gardens, remedial works on Scattery Island and upgraded signage on the EuroVelo cycle route. Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says the roads in West Clare serving the route are not fit for international tourists , but that the lack of facilities for visitors to launch boats on the estuary is proving a huge hindrance. The spotlight has also been shone on the opportunities for adjacent villages from tourists landing at Shannon Airport. Last year alone over 344,000 visitors attended Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, while the Ilaunmanagh Park Run welcomes UK participants on a weekly basis. Newmarket-On-Fergus Councillor David Griffin believes incorporating local water based attractions can enhance this.
In today's episode, we're focusing on what we can do to build strength for life and identifying hidden culprits of muscle loss. Coming in at #1 (and probably of no surprise) is refined flours and added sugars. They have a special affinity for degrading muscle health. When we eat foods like white bread, pastries, or sugary snacks, our body responds with an insulin surge to bring that blood sugar back down. Over time, frequent spikes like this can lead to insulin resistance, where muscles struggle to absorb the glucose and amino acids they need for repair and growth. This isn't just a challenge to maintain energy, it directly impacts our ability to maintain and build muscle. Ultra-refined carbohydrates (think standard bread, cracker, chips) and added sugars feed the inflammatory cascade in our body. When we have chronic low grade inflammation, the muscle repair process is downgraded, leaving us weaker and more prone to injury. Instead of rebuilding muscles after a workout, the body is sending its resources to curb inflammation. -------- ➡️Healthy Meals Made Easy PDF ➡️ Download Supplement Rx PDF Ask your lifestyle health questions on social media, tag @drwholeness and use #accumulatehealth. -------- Connect with Dr. Matt online:

Welcome to Run With Horses! My name is Norman and my goal is to help you thrive as a follower of Jesus. These obstacles can be internal or external, but all of them can slow or even stagnate a believer's growth in Christ. 1. Lack of Biblical Knowledge and Study 2. Neglect of Prayer 3. Unconfessed Sin and Lack of Repentance 4. Worldly Distractions and Priorities 5. Lack of Discipleship and Church Community 6. Spiritual Laziness or Lack of Discipline 7. Unbelief or Doubt 8. Fear of Man or Persecution 9. Spiritual Warfare 10. Pride and Self-Sufficiency Overcoming These Hindrances To grow spiritually, Christians must be intentional about: Developing strong spiritual habits (Bible study, prayer, fasting, worship, service). Staying accountable in the local church through fellowship and discipleship. Relying on the Holy Spirit to overcome sin and distractions. Being diligent in faith despite trials and temptations. **(00:00) END PART 1** **(27:00 – 5:00) BEGIN PART 2** A church can easily drift from its biblical purpose if it is not intentional about staying focused on God's mission. Some of the common hindrances that prevent a church from remaining faithful to its biblical purpose: 1. Mission Drift (Losing Focus on the Great Commission) 2. Biblical Illiteracy Among Leaders and Members 3. Compromising with Culture 4. Overemphasis on Programs Instead of Discipleship 5. Leadership Failures and Power Struggles 6. Fear of Man and Avoidance of Hard Truths 7. Lack of Evangelism and Community Engagement 8. Division and Conflict 9. Prayerlessness 10. Materialism and Financial Mismanagement Overcoming These Hindrances For a church to stay faithful to its biblical purpose, it must: ✅ Stay rooted in sound doctrine and biblical teaching. ✅ Keep discipleship and evangelism as the central focus. ✅ Equip and release believers for ministry, not just entertain them. ✅ Commit to prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit. ✅ Uphold godly leadership and unity in the church **(5:00 – 1:00)** Bibliology – Preservation of Scripture **(1:00)** The spiritual journey may seem long and slow sometimes, but don't give up. Keep on putting one foot in front of the other and get up when you fall down. You will face stumbling blocks but God is able to take you through them and even to strengthen you along the way. – “Thank you for listening today! Giving Thanks should be a daily part of the life of every disciple of Jesus. We have so much to be thankful for, we just so easily are distracted by the details of life. With the New Year upon us and the start of pitchers and catchers inching closer than we think, the Astros have been active in the offseason aiming to add depth to their roster and make another run for another postseason. Acquiring more depth in the bullpen followed by some in the infield as well, many have raised huge question as to what the Astros may tend to do with veteran third baseman Alex Bregman. With options dwindling down for Bregman, the two organizations that are still interested in him happen to be the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Wondering as to why it's taking so long for Alex to sign his next contract and hashing through the scenarios, one caller brought up the scenario pertaining to the Astros scandal back in 17' may be the deciding factor in why teams interest in Bregman has dwindled. Is it possible the scandal the Astros had a few years back, the sole reason as to why not very many teams are interested in signing Bregman?

Dating is a stressful and exhausting process. It's often romanticized (no pun intended) as this cutesy, lovely gathering when really it's a trial in the spotlight of your future that determines EVERYTHING. It's daunting. Luckily Jewish matchmaking (also known as the shidduch system) makes that process easier... right? Wrong. Gabi Koyenov, licensed therapist and host of the GKP Podcast, tells us his nightmare story of the long, high-pressure and seemingly forced experience he went through to find his wife. Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, commiserates with Koyenov, as he too is familiar with the judgmental world that can be Jewish dating. PLAN GOAL PLAN | Schedule, Mindful, Holistic Goal Setting, Focus, Working Moms
In this podcast episode, I share how the chaos of juggling multiple roles, ambitions, and obligations can leave us overwhelmed and disconnected from what matters most. Despite having a knack for planning, I struggled to maintain momentum after becoming a parent. My foggy, sleep-deprived mind forced me to rethink how I organized my life. I dive into five limiting thought patterns that kept me from effective planning, such as waiting for the "right time," striving for perfection, doubting my skills, fearing uncertainty, and struggling to ask for help. Through personal stories, I explore how shifting these patterns allowed me to reclaim control and find joy in planning. It's not about rigid schedules but creating space for meaningful reflection, connection, and action. I encourage listeners to challenge their own limiting beliefs and take small steps to embrace intentional planning, promising more clarity and purpose, if not complete ease, on this journey. LONG Weekend Recap and Listener Questions:Q: “If gaining 1 lb of muscle is more difficult than losing 1 lb of fat, how does body recomposition without losing weight work? (Aka, when we hear in a fat loss phase that we shouldn't worry if the scale isn't moving, it's because your body is recomping)”?Q: “Ok, stupid question, but I eat a candy bar daily. It's my vice. I don't drink, eat fast food, chips, pizza, etc. I get in 110 grams of protein/day, calories are about 1800. I'm not overweight at all. I'd definitely like to put on muscle – it's painfully slow, so I'm wondering if this is hindering my progress?”Q: “Will not weighing my fruit make me overshoot in maintenance?”Q: “Would you adjust calories down in winter if steps decrease from like 15,000 to 10,000?”Q: “Key factors in determining when to do a full deload/no lifts for a week give or take?”Q: “I've been focusing on strictly strength training for the last 10 weeks. Georgia Recorder columnist Jay Bookman reminded readers the many and varied ways Donald Trump injected pettiness into federal disaster response efforts while President. The headline: "Trump's lie that Biden didn't offer Georgia storm relief a disastrous pattern." Because it's so difficult to keep up with the sheer volume of things we ought remember about his presidency, it was a necessary reminder. Also "all accusations are confessions" with him. These lies - and this cultural phenomenon of generating and circulating unbelievable (literally to anyone grounded in reality) distortions or lies, are hindering relief efforts and - according to the Washington Post - stirring up anti-FEMA militarism. "One user suggested “a militia to go against FEMA,” in a post that had received more than half a million views as of Saturday afternoon," per that piece. Asheville resident and digital creator Mark Huneycutt set off (mostly by foot) to Chimney Rock, NC, to see for himself what's reality vs fiction, and shared his findings in a riveting 20-minute YouTube video. In it, many of the "myths" circulating through social media are - surprise - dispelled. Having lived in Louisiana before during and after Hurricane Katrina, it's not lost on me where Trump is getting his inspiration to spew these falsehoods. This is just yet another scenario where his lies are not only endangering lives, but could prove to be deadly. __________________________ CONTRIBUTE TO THE SHOW

A theme has come up in sales calls that I thought we left in 2020. So today, Iet's address the outdated notion of trading money for design assets without considering the long-term value they bring to a brand. Here's a hypothetical: say you're given one hundred brand photos and 20 social templates designed for you. What do you think the value of these photos and templates will be if they're mismanaged, neglected, or misinterpreted over time? They're probably not going to continue bringing you results if your rebrand isn't fully integrated and intentionally executed over time. That's why it's flawed thinking to go into the investment of a rebrand with the mindset of "I'm paying X dollars for X amount of assets." The fact is, assets are only the beginning of the conversation. And approaching design with such a black and white view ultimately devalues the ROI that business owners actually can see from rebranding. You're not just paying for the website. You're paying for the high ticket client that will pay twice as much as they would have if your business was stuck in word-of-mouth land. Suddenly, they trust you more because your website is validating their interest instead of detracting from it. In this episode, we're chatting about: The evolution of branding and design since 2020 Why many business owners are slashing their rebrand's value over time The importance of brand maintenance How to actually approach your rebrand to ensure the highest ROI

Look around, Podsters - and look closely. Your environment (the people you hang with, the places you go, the information you take in, all of it) shapes your thoughts and beliefs. Your beliefs shape your behavior. And we all know – your behavior shapes your outcomes. So, I ask… Who are you surrounding yourself with? You know the saying, "your net worth is the average of the five people you spend the most time with"? Well, I'd take it a step further and say your value (which is your currency), is shaped by those same people. How you see and value yourself affects how others do, and if you're not hanging out with people who inspire you, challenge you, and are on the path you want to be on, professionally or personally, it's time to rethink your circle. Podsters, it's true. You become what you surround yourself with. The people in your life, their energy, their mindset, ALL OF THIS has a massive impact on what you think, your beliefs and how you show up. And eventually, you'll start to reflect the ideas, thoughts, goals and opinions of those around you as well - so make sure these are people you admire, people whose qualities and successes you want to emulate. Today, podsters I invite you to take a good hard look around; your friends, your colleagues, your family, your professional networks, how you spend your precious time and who you spend it with…. are these the people who will support you, believe in you and help you get where you want to go? As we get ready for fall, and the “back to school” frenzy, it's the perfect time to assess who you're spending time with on the playground of life. Let's unpack this in a real, practical way. No cheesy quotes or overused memes, just an honest look at how the company you keep can significantly impact your journey. As summer winds down, let's use these quiet moments to re-evaluate and ensure that we're surrounding ourselves with people who are lifting us up, pushing us forward, and helping us to achieve our goals. If really want to level up, it's time to pay attention to who's in your circle.
