Iron on Iron | Zach Mabry | Saturday MorningYou will be under attack if you're teaching or preaching the Word. Believers have always been facing the same enemies; the world, the flesh, and the devil. In this session, Zach walks through the doxology of Jude. Jude's audience existed in a culture that was hostile to Christianity. The world is still hostile to the Gospel. In this everchanging culture, we must strive to contend for the faith in our families, churches, and workplaces. By Rev Charlie Lacey | Colossians 3: 1-11Colossians 3: 1-11 (NIV)The Good News of the Gospel is that those who put their trust in Jesus, died with him and rose with him to be part of the new creation. Our old sinful nature has died and we have been raised to everlasting life. That life begins now, as does the process of becoming like Jesus. That process will involve a lot of changes as we continue to put our sinful inclinations to death and learn to walk in our newfound freedom.

In Episode 132, we talk about one of the most interesting doctrines in all of the scriptures. It comes in pretty much every single day of our lives. God's purpose is carried out through divine providence. Providence exists because God is concerned about the universe and all of its inhabitants. Throughout history, there have been many who have found immense consolation in the fact of providence. It involves acknowledging that God has been there before in particular situations in life. It is proof that God has not abandoned this planet in the vastness of the cosmos or forgotten about the human condition. God comes before and between man and his wants by visiting, touching, communicating, controlling, and intervening. Thank goodness for Providence.Tune in now, and let's go bigger, better, and deeper! Be Strong | Hank Parker Jr. | BreakoutWhat does it look like to be a Gospel-driven man? In this breakout, Hank Parker Jr. walks through how to be Gospel-driven men. It is easy in ministry to become so familiar with the Gospel that we lose sight of its magnitude. There is nothing else in this world worth pouring our lives out for. We are undeserving recipients of God's grace. In His goodness, He saves us. Matthew 5:27-30 – The Heart of the Matter is the Matter of the HeartJesus moves on from the 6 th to the 7 th commandment…”You shall not kill”27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.' [a] 28 But I tell you that anyone wholooks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eyecauses you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your bodythan for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut itoff and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to gointo hell.”Exodus 20:14 – “You shall not commit adultery” One of the 10 commandmentsLeviticus 20:10 – Punishable by death10 “‘If a man commits adultery with another man's wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both theadulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.”Jesus says “You have heard it said”. He is not quoting scripture or changing scripture, but referencingman's traditions around the old testament law.+ Moses and the scribes did not emphasize the internal aspects of adultery, but just the external…theact…which was punishable by death. For many, it became a conveniently narrow definition of sin. Youwere either an adulterer or not, and if you were caught, you were dead.Part of that narrow definition…Deuteronomy 24:1 – References divorcing a woman because she is “displeasing”If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent abouther, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house1. According to some of the scribes, a man could divorce his wife if he grew “cool” toward her if hedidn't like her cooking.+ A law that was clearly intended to safeguard marriage and the women of Israel was turnedinto an escape clause for self-indulgent men…also pious and proud+ Jesus was speaking to these arrogant leaders who were counting themselves righteous, knowing , but He knew the condition of their hearts. He knows the condition of our hearts too.It was very natural, as it is today, for those of us who are non-adulterers to feel maybe a little smug orconceited…the whole…”I haven't done THAT”. “Jesus isn't talking to me on that one.”(Proverbs 11:2) When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. So in this passage, Jesus introduces a radically new standard.Few of us have not crossed that line from attraction to lust at some time – this should fill us with apoverty of spirit and a humility that realizes that we are spiritually bankrupt. It also should make usamazed that God loves us the way He does.+ Jesus carries us to a place that we never saw coming but was intended by God all along.…”but I say…” Jesus is speaking with authority…+The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart+ In this life…in this world, much like Jesus saying hatred in our hearts being the same asmurder, the penalty is not the same as it is for murder, neither are the consequences of lustliterally the same as adultery, but God sees them as worthy of the same penalty…+ Jesus calls a halt to this distortion of God's word by saying that the lust that leads to adulterywill also lead a man to hell.+ Adultery actually breaches several of the 10 Commandments: the commandment that forbidsit, coveting which leads to theft and even idolatry.2. Jesus is not talking about looking or recognizing someone's beauty, but lustfully looking or fantasizingabout more than just looks…a GAZE, not a GLANCE...and to Him (“But I tell you…”) it's the same.It starts in “The heart”…What does the Bible say about the heart?Jeremiah 17:9The heart is deceitful above all thingsand beyond cure.Who can understand it?Proverbs 4:23Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.3. We need to recognize that those thoughts and actions which, long before any overt sexual sin, makesthe possibility of giving into temptation more likely, and we must take dramatic action to avoid them.Psalm 51:10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.The crucible for silver…refinement of precious metals…to purify usProverbs 25:4-5Remove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel;5 remove wicked officials from the king's presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness.Consider God a silversmith refining us…impure stuff comes to the top under heatJames 1:2-42 Count it all joy, my brothers, [ a ] when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing ofyour faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfectand complete, lacking in nothing. We need to leave our lives of sin behind…all sin, and allow God to refine us.John 8:2-112 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he satdown to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act ofadultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They wereusing this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioninghim, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw astone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they?Has no one condemned you?”11 “No one, sir,” she said.“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”+ Jesus does not condemn her, but calls out the hypocrisy of those willing to stone her.+ We don't really know what Jesus wrote, but consider this possibility….+ Jesus wrote in the sand twice…you could say that Jesus was drawing a line in the sand – for herto step over and sin no more.+ We need to draw a line in the sand in our own lives4. How do we draw a line in the sand?Colossians 3:5Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, andcovetousness, which is idolatry.Vs 29:29: If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to loseone part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causesyou to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than foryour whole body to go into hell.”+ The eyes can entice the heart, and the heart, enticed by the eyes, directs the hands+ Does Jesus want us to literally cut off our hand or pluck out our eyes? No. He wants us to:+ Realize where sin will take us and turn from it. Jesus said that Hell is the direction where all sinleads+ God has something better for all of us+ Deal with sin aggressively, immediately and decisively. You don't need to cut off your hands, but…+ If you need to cancel Netflix, then do it+ If you need to get a flip phone, then do that+ If you need to quit your job to guard your heart, prayerfully consider it.+ If you need to get rid of your romance novels, then do it+ You may need better friendsDo whatever you have to do…for your eternal soul, for your marriage, for your children…Jesus is also addressing you and YOUR sinful heart, me and MINE. He says to pluck out YOUR eye, notsomeone else's.Matthew 7:4-54 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is aplank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will seeclearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.+ Don't blame others for your sin…take responsibility for it. While there is truth in avoiding doing thingsthat cause a brother or sister to stumble, blaming how people dress or whether you are satisfied athome for the condition of your heart, or the actions that come from it, is no different than the scribes'escape clause for their self-indulgence. Jesus put that idea to death.James 4:1717 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them. Why did He have to say it? He doesn't want us to go to hell. Sin takes us there. Period.Francis Chan-“Hell is the backdrop that reveals the profound and unbelievable grace of the cross. It brings to light theenormity of our sin and therefore portrays the undeserved favor of God in full color.”There is good news…He is good news, and a greater understanding of the depth and scope of our sin, will give us a greater understanding of our need for a Savior.Romans 5:88 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.Romans 10:99 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from thedead, you will be saved. We're saved by the cross…the same God that said “this is how I see it…” is the same one who rescues usfrom it. The more we understand the depths and consequences of our sin, the greater appreciation anddesire we'll have for the One who rescues us from it.The Heart of the Matter is the Matter of the Heart – July 17, 2022Scripture ReferencesMatthew 5:27-30Exodus 20:14Leviticus 20:10Proverbs 11:2Jeremiah 17:9Proverbs 4:23Psalm 51:10Proverbs 25:4-5James 1:2-4John 8:2-11Colossians 3:5Matthew 5:29-30Matthew 7:4-5James 4:17Romans 5:8Romans 10:9

Colossians 1:9-14 (NIV)How to Bear Fruit in Every Good Work9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. Wecontinually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom andunderstanding that the Spirit gives, [a] 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and pleasehim in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 beingstrengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have greatendurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you [b] toshare in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us fromthe dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom wehave redemption, the forgiveness of sins.Verse 9: For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying foryou. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom andunderstanding that the Spirit gives,Paul asks God to fill them with knowledge of God's will “in all spiritual wisdom andunderstanding”It is significant that Paul is praying for knowledge for the Colossians – they were under siege bypeople who were telling them that they needed a better knowledge: a gnosis. The Gnosticswere teaching that Christ was a good place to begin but there was so much more they couldknow and experience if only they would incorporate the Gnostic system of passwords, rites andinitiations. These folks were know-it-alls. They were elitists and intimidating, and some of theColossians were falling for it…feeling like they were lacking.Paul's prayer hit the problem head-on.The Gnostics word for knowledge was “gnosis”, but Paul used the word “epignosis”which was closer to “full knowledge”…which was significantly spiritual.Paul knew that spiritual knowledge is foundational to a sound, fruitful Christian life.Proverbs 1:7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools [a] despise wisdom and instruction. This knowledge starts with a proper attitude towards God.Right knowledge leads to right behaviorRomans 1:2828 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so Godgave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. The wisdom and understanding that Paul prays for are inseparable from the knowledgeof God and His will. When praying for knowledge of God's will, he is not just praying for them to know whatGod wants them to do…it's bigger+ Filled with an understanding of God's entire plan and scope for salvation.…an understanding for God's full saving purpose for man…an understanding how God views us, and His purposes for us in Christ JesusDo we really want to know God's will? You know, it might conflict with ours…Praying for business…This knowledge of God's will only comes by spiritual wisdom and understanding“Spiritual understanding” references understanding through the Holy SpiritThe scriptures are the primary source of knowledge for the believer as they are studied in thepower of the Holy Spirit. This produces a person whose life, through their actions, bears fruitand pleases God.When we pray for others, we often pray for healing, well-being and spiritual growth. Maybe weshould be praying for people to have “knowledge of His will in all wisdom and understanding”We should be praying that for each other, for our pastors, our family and new believers. We need to be prepared to be part of the answer to our own prayers too…HOW? Readand meditate on God's word.We need to be able to filter out OUR culture's gnosis through the filter of God'sepignosis.Examples of cultural influence in our knowledge…Verse 10: …so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearingfruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, Knowing God's will and being obedient to it are the only way we're going to be able tolive a life that even comes close to being worthy of Him.“Bearing fruit” in every good work – does that describe us?Pray that your knowledge increases so you can live and follow in the way that Godwants for our lives. When you do that, you can begin to understand God's will and live alife that pleases Him…live out the desires He has for us. In turn, you will see God's willmore clearly.Obedience to the knowledge of God which has already been received is a necessary andcertain condition for the reception of further knowledge. In the Hebrew mind, knowledge and conduct were bound together. From their perspective, a person did not know something unless they did it.– true spiritual knowledge means ACTION.- Paul prayed that they walk their talk…DO WE?These days, people of knowledge, don't seem to be people of action. (except Gene). Andpeople of action tend to neglect the pursuit of knowledge.-an ignorant “soul-winner” who only knows a pattern of tracts through scripture may nothave a thought-through of his own. On the other hand, a Biblical scholar who has neverled a soul to Christ.WE NEED BALANCE – a profound knowledge should profoundly affect one's walk.Any doctrine that isolates the believer from the needs of the world is not a spiritualdoctrine. The result bears fruit – a constant, ongoing reality. Why did Paul add … growing in the knowledge of God, again? He knew that once you start tobear fruit in every good work, you naturally open yourself to “increasing in the knowledge ofGod”.It's an upward spiral: the more one truly serves Him, the more one increases in theknowledge of Him…and the more one knows Him, the more one wants to serve Him.John 7:17 – Jesus made it clear that doing the Father's will made possible the reception of theknowledge of the Son.17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comesfrom God or whether I speak on my own.Romans 12:1-2Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as aliving sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do notconform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then youwill be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.Conform to the pattern set before us…die that we might liveWe are told to “die to self”, but it's critical that as we die to self, we grow in understanding ofwhat it means to die to self…what it means to live in Christ.Verse 11: being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you mayhave great endurance and patiencePower of His Glorious might – the power of God - the creation, parting the red sea, thevirgin birth, raising Lazarus from the dead and the resurrection of Jesus.- with that power, Paul prays that they would have endurance and patiencePaul was praying for them to have the steadfastness that which enables one to holdone's position in battle. There were forces in the Lycus valley who were looking todestroy the Colossian Church.Paul was praying that they would stand…endure…persevere…remain steadfast…stay at it.As Winston Churchill told students at his former school “never give up. Nevergive up. Never give up. Never. Never. Never!”- If you're going to be filled with the knowledge of God's will, and live a life that pleaseHim, you'll need both, endurance and patience.Endurance is a reference to adverse circumstances. Patience is a reference to difficultpeople. Possessing endurance, does not mean one will succeed in patience.Endurance and patience, when combined together, are beautiful. Of course, they exist perfectlyonly in Jesus. Paul knew that, which is why they should be strengthened with allpower according to his glorious might…The church with “endurance and patience” is a great church…a church that walks in a mannerworthy of the Lord”Where do we stand with this? Where do you stand with this?Verse 12: …and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you [b] to share in theinheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of lightNow He is starting to talk about our inheritanceWe also walk in a worthy manner by being thankful. We cannot walk worthy of God withoutjoyfully giving thanks to our God for our salvation. WHY? Paul gives 3 reasons:1. He has qualified us to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom oflight. Not through anything we have done. We are now in the realm of LIGHT.2 Corinthians 4:66 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” [ a ] made his light shine inour hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in theface of Christ.1 Thessalonians 5:55 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to thenight or to the darkness.2. We are rescuedVerse 13: For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into thekingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.We have been rescued! The 4 R's of our testimony: Rescue – Renew - Resource – and ReleaseWe have been rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into thekingdom of the Son He loves. He rescued us from THIS kingdom and released us into HisStockholm Syndrome – emotional connection with captors3. Reason 3 comes in Verse 14: in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.We have been purchased for a price…fully redeemed and fully healed in Christ. Free from sin.Summary: Interceding for each other is remarkably valuable…A church that is growing in the knowledge of Christ and His will, and consequently is walkingworthy of Him, will do great things for Him. Let's commit ourselves to this…if we haven't yet, let's start now.PRAYScripture References (NIV)“How to Bear Fruit in Every Good Work”(slides)Colossians 1:9-14Colossians 1:9Proverbs 1:7Romans 1:28Colossians 1:10John 7:17Romans 12:1-2Colossians 1:11Colossians 1:122 Corinthians 4:61 Thessalonians 5:5Colossians 1:13Colossians 1:14

In this episode Saso and Ben talk about the topic of sanctification. Below are some notes and thoughts directly derived from this episode. Enjoy! The first part of the process is changing from your way to God's way. Salvation is the changing of the mind and the process to start to walk a new road, and serve a new master Romans 6:4 I received Christ, but now what? What changes? Romans 6:11Colossians 3:3 The power that saved is the same power that changes us through the help of the Holy Spirit. We will receive emancipation from the slavery we endured when we were lost. John 8:362 Peter 1:4 We no longer are saddled with the old nature, but we have escaped that corruption. The word sanctify at it's basic level, means to set apart. If you are a blood bought child of God, and you have been born again, then you have been sanctified. You've been positional set apart in Christ. Hebrews 10:10Sanctification is also the act of making holy or another way to phrase it, it is he pursuit of Godliness. We are commanded to continue in this process of holiness. Philippians 2:12-13 Notice how it's God that does the work through us. And it's only possible if you have been regenerated or born again. If you've not received Christ as your Lord and Savior we suggest going back and listening to Episode 6, because if you've not been born again, this episode will likely not be a help to you. Does sanctification mean we are just to be moral nice people? Not entirely. In fact the Pharisees were very moral people. This is what Jesus said about the pharisees: Mark 7:6-7 Since God is our standard, let's begin by talking about God and His holiness. God is holy and He does not need to be sanctified, He already is. God is pure, set apart and separate from us. Isaiah 45:22The idea is that God is separate and distinct from His creation. In fact, we are called to be holy because He is Holy. Leviticus 19:1-2 If we are going to talk about the process of becoming holy, we must know what it is to be holy. Simply put, God is holy and the process of sanctification is to become holy. To focus this idea in a little more, the process of sanctification is to become Christ like. It is not just a rules checklist, or being moral, because there are a lot of people that are morally good. It's about being like Christ.Be sure to checkout the Changed into His Image book by Dr. Jim Berg. Support the show (https://abundantlife.fm)
