Over the years, we've been honored to host iconic figures like Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably, who revealed how color can be a life-changing force, and Tula Pink, who welcomed us into her imaginative, boundary-pushing world. We heard from Alex Anderson, who reminded us of the importance of claiming space for our creativity, and Amanda Murphy, who inspired us to stretch the boundaries of traditional quilting. This journey has introduced us to countless other inspiring voices: astronaut Dr. Karen Nyberg, who shared her love for quilting in space; Michael Thorpe, whose bold textile art challenges conventions; and the incomparable Gee's Bend Quilters, represented by Mary Margaret Pettway, whose work connects us to a rich heritage of storytelling through fabric. We've also learned from quilting luminary Ricky Tims, who shared his unique blend of music and quilting, costume designer Justine Seymore and Julian Collins, who creates fashion with purpose. Mimi G brought her vibrant energy and DIY spirit, while Deanna Springer reminded us of the enduring legacy of Nancy Zieman and the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show. We've brought you behind the scenes at Quilt Week in Paducah, BERNINA university, C2E2, QuiltCon, The Sewing and Stitching Expo, Houston Festival, The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show and The National Quilt Museum.  And our guest list goes on: Gail Yellen with her expert sewing techniques, sustainable designer Tristan Detweiler, creative advocate Kristina Wong, and reality star Craig Conover from Southern Charm who we accompanied to North Charleston High School as he donated BERNINA sewing machines to their maker space. We've heard from visionaries like Jean Wright from Sew Sisters, Amanda Richie from Unshattered and fabric artist Cookie Washington, each of whom has left an unforgettable mark on our community. As we reflect on these first 100 episodes, we are profoundly grateful to each guest who has shared their time, talent, and insights, and to each of you who have been with us on this journey.  So now, let's celebrate by taking you back to February 18, 2021, to where it all began with a replay of our very first episode featuring the incredible Bisa Butler. Here is Sew & So episode #1… This podcast explores Bisa Butler's fascinating journey, which began with her getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at Howard University. Realizing painting was not her passion, she went on to Montclair University to pursue a Master in Teaching. It was there, while making a quilt in her first-ever fibers class, that she had an artistic epiphany; she realized she could do what she loved, express her creativity in a way that moved her deeply, and tell the countless untold stories of African Americans.  Each pivotal step in her journey is described in fascinating detail. She talks about learning to sew from her grandmother; a black woman, and wife of an Emissary, who found herself transported to Morocco. She and her husband had to attend many formal events, and since they couldn't afford to buy the refined clothing, one was required to wear, her grandmother would pore through fashion magazines and create replicas of designer outfits. The scraps of fibers and fabrics from those outfits can be seen in Bisa's portraits of her grandmother and grandfather. She explains how using little bits of their lives helped inform her work. Butler describes her work as “excavating the soul, where her own spirit has a conversation with someone who has long passed. The process begins with a portrait. By gazing into the eyes of her subject and really looking at the lines, creases, scars and the expression in their eyes, she can ‘hear' their unspoken story. She spoke of the improvisational nature of private quilts and their ability to tell the personal experiences of her people (21:20 – 24:21). As she details her journey through galleries and museums, Butler recounts the bias that was shown towards artists who use cloth in their art. But through all the rejections and dismissals, she kept at it, slow and steady, until her work exhibited at a New York gallery. After that, her work began getting accepted at more galleries and museums. Her fiber and fabric creation, The Storm, the Whirlwind, and the Earthquake features a life‐sized representation of abolitionist and social reformer Fredrick Douglass whose magnetic gaze pulled her in. This piece is a powerful example of how Butler's painterly textiles convey a sense of shared humanity were on exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art. Her textile creations were exhibited in the European Painting Gallery Space at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021. This is the first time a living artist has been showcased in this space. Her work iwasalso featured in Dress Up, Speak Up: Regalia and Resistance at the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was a joy to learn about the strides fiber, fabric and quilting artists have made, and we owe much of it to Bisa Butler. Her personal story of using textiles and the medium of quilting to celebrate her heritage and her community and her powerful art is a great inspiration to us all. This is one story you don't want to miss, so make sure you catch the podcast. You can learn more about Bisa Butler and view some of her amazing works of art at Bisabutler.com If you know someone you think has an outstanding story – a story that should be shared on this podcast, please drop me a note to meg@sew&sewpodcast.com  or complete the form on this website. Be sure to subscribe to, review and rate this podcast on your favorite platform. FAQ: How do I make small talk when you are on the road with a stranger?   Destination: Louisville, Ky   Today's Mistake-Getting lost in Louisville Travel Advice:  Pack half your suitcase with giveaways and gifts. FAQ:  How do I make small talk with a stranger when you are on the road?   Start small with a question or comment about the weather, date, location, or event you are both at or have just attended. Do they seem to have something in common with you? You can gently ask how they are doing today.   Today's destination: Louisville, KY Derby is on the first Saturday of every year in May. I've attended several of them with friends and always had fun. I miss those days, but still love the races. Churchill Downs is the place to visit when in town as that's where the race takes place, the fastest two minutes in sports ever! Even if you can't make the early week races, get dressed up and place your best. Check out Thurby Oaks, which is an alternative to Churchill Downs. On Derby weekend, you can go bourbon tasting or whatever. Be sure you get your big hat! Follow the rules regarding what you can bring. My friend and I always celebrated with a Mint Julep, even if not at the race. What's the recipe?  The four ingredients to taste are mint leaf, bourbon, simple syrup, and crushed ice. Once, I did not have a mint leaf, so I used oregano, which went over badly. It was a hoot! https://www.churchilldowns.com/tickets/   https://www.letsgolouisville.com/kentucky-derby-tips   Visit the museums on Museum Row, including Louisville's own Muhammed Ali Museum, the Frazier Kentucky History Museum, 21C Museum Hotel, KMAC (the Kentucky Museum of Art & Crafts), and Roots 101 African American Museum, all within proximity. The Speed Art Museum is also a fantastic contemporary art museum in Old Louisville. Stroll through beautiful Old Louisville, or take a guided history tour with Louisville Historic Tours to learn all about the local architecture and history. Take a food tour with Louisville Food Tours and experience the story of Louisville one bite at a time in the most scenic neighborhoods in town.  You'll learn all about the city's history while enjoying the sights, interspersed with stops at fantastic local eateries for food and drinks. With just 1.5 miles of walking spread out over 3 hours, it's the perfect balance of activity, history, and eating and drinking. Louisville has a fantastic theatre scene! Check out what's playing at Actor's Theatre, or if you're visiting during the summer, check out the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, the longest-running free Shakespeare festival in the country. Another fantastic entertainment venue is PLAY, a gay nightclub hosting drag performances and Queer-owned theatre productions. Take a sunset cruise on the beautiful Ohio River aboard Louisville's historic steamboat, the Belle of Louisville. Explore NuLu and shop at the local boutiques and gift stores in the NuLu neighborhood. It's a small area, about 2 blocks, but full of locally owned businesses. My favorite is Revelry, a gift shop and art gallery featuring unique creations by Louisville artists. Right across the street is Women Owned Wallet, a shop featuring only women-owned and created products. There are also two bourbon distilleries, Angel's Envy and Rabbit Hole! If you're spending the day in NuLu, book a NuLu Food Tour with Louisville Food Tours. Their 3-hour daytime tour features food that represents the culinary heritage of Louisville and Kentucky, and they also offer an evening bourbon food tour in NuLu, which treats bourbon as if it were wine and explores pairings of food, bourbon, and bourbon cocktails.  Lia Garcia, Founder and CEO, Let's Go Louisville   Today's Mistake- Getting Lost in Louisville   It was the night of the Kentucky Derby, and my college friends were all there, staying near Churchill Downs. One friend drove their motor home out to a bar after the event, and they left me behind by mistake. I did not have the address of where I was staying before cell phones, so I found a policeman and told them what happened. They helped me get “home” for the night.  Just as I walked in the door, they noticed I was missing. Today's Travel Advice: Pack half your suitcase with giveaways and gifts. Our guest this week is a talented designer with over 20 years of experience. She's a leader who helps transform spaces into experiences that are truly part of their local communities. Joining the show is Chief Development Officer at NuovoRE, Heather Ciszczon!Heather joins host, Dan Ryan, for a comprehensive discussion on her journey from design to development. Heather discusses the intricacies of her work, including exceptional renovation projects like the 21C Museum Hotel in St. Louis. Additionally, Heather touches on the challenges of historic tax credit works and the responsibility of the hospitality industry in making outsized impact on the lives of people through innovation and engagement.Takeaways:  Hospitality is about meeting someone where they are at and where they're most comfortable. While luxury experiences are nice, your customers may want something more relaxed.  As a designer, when working on any project, you need to fully understand what the owner wants. Understanding those goals allows you to more effectively meet them, and deliver a satisfactory end product.  When you are the owner of a project, you need to help give your team agency to work effectively. Helping them understand the why behind your motivations will allow them to carry out your vision to its fullest.  While any project requires a good team, renovations have particular nuances that members need to handle. Having team members who are familiar with historic buildings and tax credit work are crucial understandings in addition to their design skills.  When renovating old buildings, there is a fine line between preservation and adaptation. Adjustments to a building to make it function more efficiently as a hotel may face pushback from preservation societies; designers need to be sensitive to these needs.  When trying to ingrain a property in the local community, partnerships are key. By partnering with local groups and providers, you help meet everyone's needs, have stronger procurement processes, and invest in the local community.  The foundation of a good team is trust. Rather than waiting for something to go wrong, establish trust early on. With a strong connection between your team, issues that arise will be much easier to handle.  Quote of the Show:“That's not my skill set is to make something of a blank piece of paper. But if you give me a bunch of puzzle pieces, I will find a way to solve them.” - Heather CiszczonLinks: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heatherciszczon/  Website: https://nuovore.com/  Shout Outs: 03:38 - McDonalds 04:19 - Two Roads Hospitality 04:59 - The El Capitan Hotel: https://elcapitanhotelmerced.com/  05:49 - 21C Museum Hotel St Louis: https://www.21cmuseumhotels.com/stlouis/ 09:04 - The Hermosa Inn: https://www.hermosainn.com/  09:08 - Lon Megargee 11:08 - Liam Neeson 12:52 - YMCA: https://www.ymca.org/  28:34 - New Waterloo: https://newwaterloo.com/  42:23 - Lor Tush: https://lortush.com/  46:13 - ASU: https://www.asu.edu/  48:40 - Fidelity Hotel Cleveland  50:17 - Hotel Marcel: https://www.hotelmarcel.com/  Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

This episode explores Bisa Butler's fascinating journey, which began with her getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at Howard University. Realizing painting was not her passion, she went on to Montclair University to pursue a Master's in Teaching. She and her husband had to attend many formal events, and since they couldn't afford to buy the refined clothing one was required to wear, her grandmother would pore through fashion magazines and create replicas of designer outfits. By gazing into the eyes of her subject and really looking at the lines, creases, scars, and the expression in their eyes, she can ‘hear' their unspoken story.  She spoke of the improvisational nature of private quilts and their ability to tell the personal experiences of her people (21:20 – 24:21).  As she details her journey through galleries and museums, Butler recounts the bias that was shown towards artists who use cloth in their art. But through all the rejections and dismissals, she kept at it, slow and steady, until her work was exhibited at the Seraleli Gallery in New York.  From that moment, her work began getting accepted at more galleries and museums.  Her latest fiber and fabric creation, The Storm, the Whirlwind, and the Earthquake features a life-sized representation of abolitionist and social reformer Fredrick Douglass whose magnetic gaze pulled her in. This piece is a powerful example of how Butler's painterly textiles convey a sense of shared humanity. It is currently on exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art.    Her textile creations are also being exhibited in the European Painting Gallery Space at the Art Institute of Chicago through September 6, 2021.  This is the first time a living artist has been showcased in this space. Her work is also featured in Dress Up, Speak Up: Regalia and Resistance at the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio.

JONATHAN DOWDELL is a senior producer at TV home shopping giant QVC. Jonathan identifies with the legions of loyal viewers who tune into the network 24/7 searching for good deals because at the age of 50 he is – as he’s always been – compulsively conscious of every dollar he spends. (34:26) EXPLICIT       EPISODE NOTES: Some of my very best friends in life are people I’ve met while working on various television shows. JONATHAN DOWDELL is one of them. I met Jonathan on a series in 1993 and, despite his moving to the east coast 15 years ago to take a producing job with TV home shopping giant QVC, we’ve managed to stay close. When I turned 50, Jonathan and I met up in Clarksdale, Mississippi to celebrate with another relocated TV buddy. Recently, Jonathan turned 50 and this time the celebration was in Louisville, Kentucky. I packed my portable digital recorder thinking I might, on the occasion of his milestone birthday, convince him to sit down and record an episode of PIERSON TO PERSON. I wasn’t sure what we would talk about – there are several topics we could have covered – but as you’ll hear in THE PENNY-WISEGUY, Jonathan was feeling introspective. As we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in our room at the trendy 21C Museum Hotel, he was remarkably candid about aspects of his personality that he believes have stood in his way over the years, including his deep-rooted frugality: “I’m very measured when it comes to spending money. It’s very hard for me to spend top dollar for anything. I do sometimes wonder if I was freer would I be happier. Not that I’m unhappy. But why can’t I have the nice dinner? Why can’t I buy the better bottle of wine? Why can’t I drive a nicer car? I don’t need to drive a 19-year-old car. I can afford a new car. Sometimes I wonder if I feel like I don’t deserve a new car. That it isn’t just about the money, or saving the money or not spending the money. Do I deserve nice things? I’m not sure I feel that I do deserve nice things.” Being overly concerned about other people's opinions is another obstacle that Jonathan feels has hindered him over the years: “I have felt that I can’t achieve certain things because I can’t get over the hump of being judged. Maybe I would be more successful if I didn’t care about how other people felt. There are a lot of things in my life that I have been reluctant to do because I’m worried about being judged or failing, and I think that that is something I’m striving to get over. How do I push that aside so that I can have some other achievements in my life that will ultimately make me more fulfilled, more happy, make my life better?” This episode may, at times, sound more like a therapy session than Kentucky cocktail conversation. But in the 23 years I’ve known Jonathan, this is the most self-reflective I’ve ever heard him be. Maybe there’s something about hitting the half-century mark that inspired him to look inward. (That, and being sequestered in a hotel room, having me clip a mic on his shirt and asking him a bunch of personal questions.) As I do with all my podcast guests, I sent the finished episode to Jonathan to make sure he was okay with me releasing it. He called a few days ago to say it definitely was weird to hear himself talking about “all that stuff.” Even so, he didn’t ask me to change a thing and gave the green-light to share it with you as is.
