On Halloween weekend 2022, a small group of us gathered in a lounge above The Royale Food & Spirits to hear Stan Chisololm deconstruct his single “Smitten.” Later that night, Stan would play an all vinyl DJ set. To help set the scene, you might picture Stan sitting on a black leather couch wearing the Bjork swon dress from her Academy Awards appearance in 2001 back in her Vespertine days.[“Hi I'm Stan aka 18andCounting…”][Theme]Stan Chisholm, aka “18andCounting” is an experimental DJ and emcee. He's also a graphic artist and muralist with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts from The Art Institute Of Chicago.[I'm a grimey art kid]He's co-founder of open concept arts venue Blank Space on Cherokee St. and a Board Member of the New Music Circle arts collective. He's won numerous academic scholarships and music awards holds DJ residencies at places like The City Museum, The Royale and Spark and occasionally performs and records under the name “The Only Ensemble”, notably at Loufest 2017. Mid pandemic, he landed a track on fellow artist Nathan Cook's afrofuturist compilation entitled AfroFuturism St. Louis. Last summer, his album Some Sort Of Future cemented 18andCounting as lyricist and emcee in the most complete way to date. For this episode, Stan provided 61 individual instrument and vocal tracks (and 26 AUX buses) AND a track laying around from 2015 that would eventually become verse one.Songs Out Loud breaks it down, instrument by instrument, lyric by lyric, and beat by beat.

From Amazon warehouses to the galleries of major cultural institutions, unionization has seemingly undergone a sort of revitalization during the pandemic. The National Labor Relations Board reported a 57% increase in union election petitions between July 2021 and June 2022. Regardless of whether those votes are successful, the number points to the desire workers feel to assert power in their workplaces. And at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago — the teaching arm of the Art Institute — full-time faculty voted to unionize in January. Staff at the museum did as well. It's been followed by a push by lecturers and non-tenure-track professors to work toward the same goal. Elena Ailes — assistant professor, adjunct in Contemporary Practices at SAIC and a member of the SAIC Faculty organizing committee — drops by The Best of Our Knowledge to explain the process they've undertaken, as well as what led to the unionization push. Additional reading “When the pandemic began, it became very clear the priority was nowhere near about protecting staff and giving us a living wage to survive,” Eala O'Sé, an AIC employee told Chicago-based journalist Mark Guarino. When full-time instructors and museum staff organized earlier in 2022, assistant curator Erica Warren saw it as a “watershed moment.” The uptick in unions is part of a pretty well-documented trend of culture workers organizing. In a June story from Jacobin, a labor organizer said that “Three-quarters of all [SAIC] faculty are non-tenure-track.” End notes Our theme music, this and every week, is a track called “Musical Chairs” by Los Angeles producer Omid. With a background in cinema, Jason Rodriguez of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago sits down with Jared to talk about how film influences his poetry. They unpack how Jason captures movement in visual poems, how the bombardment of media and pandemic isolation influence his work, and how he found an MFA program that allows him to investigate all areas of writing without confinement to a single track. Jason Rodriguez is a second-year MFA in Writing student focusing on design, interactivity, and poetry at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He's been a producer on the school's podcast, SAIC Beat, for the last three seasons. He was an Assistant Poetry Editor for the journal ANMLY and recently worked on a queer/sci-fi stop-motion short film titled Mother Bunker, which played at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Outfest, and Melbourne International Film Festival. His writing has been published or is forthcoming in BathHouse Journal, GlitterMOB, Mannequin Haus, Word For/Word, and Gasher, and was included as the introduction to Michael Aurelio's poetry collection, The Smokers (2019). Find him on Instagram @freefloppydisk. MFA Writers is hosted by Jared McCormack and produced by Jared McCormack and Hanamori Skoblow. New episodes are released every two weeks. This episode explores Bisa Butler's fascinating journey, which began with her getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at Howard University. Realizing painting was not her passion, she went on to Montclair University to pursue a Master's in Teaching. It was there, while making a quilt in her first-ever fibers class, that she had an artistic epiphany; she realized she could do what she loved, express her creativity in a way that moved her deeply, and tell the countless untold stories of African Americans. Each pivotal step in her journey is described in fascinating detail. She talks about learning to sew from her grandmother; a black woman, and wife of an Emissary, who found herself transported to Morocco. She and her husband had to attend many formal events, and since they couldn't afford to buy the refined clothing one was required to wear, her grandmother would pore through fashion magazines and create replicas of designer outfits. The scraps of fibers and fabrics from those outfits can be seen in Bisa's portraits of her grandmother and grandfather. She explains how using little bits of their lives helped inform her work. Butler describes her work as “excavating the soul, where her own spirit has a conversation with someone who has long passed. The process begins with a portrait. By gazing into the eyes of her subject and really looking at the lines, creases, scars, and the expression in their eyes, she can ‘hear' their unspoken story. She spoke of the improvisational nature of private quilts and their ability to tell the personal experiences of her people (21:20 – 24:21). As she details her journey through galleries and museums, Butler recounts the bias that was shown towards artists who use cloth in their art. But through all the rejections and dismissals, she kept at it, slow and steady, until her work was exhibited at the Seraleli Gallery in New York. From that moment, her work began getting accepted at more galleries and museums. Her latest fiber and fabric creation, The Storm, the Whirlwind, and the Earthquake features a life-sized representation of abolitionist and social reformer Fredrick Douglass whose magnetic gaze pulled her in. This piece is a powerful example of how Butler's painterly textiles convey a sense of shared humanity. It is currently on exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art. Her textile creations are also being exhibited in the European Painting Gallery Space at the Art Institute of Chicago through September 6, 2021. This is the first time a living artist has been showcased in this space. Her work is also featured in Dress Up, Speak Up: Regalia and Resistance at the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Tucson artists Fred Borcherdt came by today, I've been trying to get Fred on the Podcast show and finally found time. I've represented Fred for 15 years and own his sculpture in my personal collection. Borcherdt trained at the University of Arizona and got his masters of fine art at the Chicago Art Institute, where he would eventually teach 3D design for 5 years. Fred takes us through his art career chronologically, specifically how sculpture came into his life and how traveling the world on a sculpture scholarship influenced his artwork, including time in Australia and the Pacific islands looking at Polynesian art. Fred speaks on what it's like to be a sculptor that works with very difficult and unforgiving mediums such as steel, hardwoods, and stone, what a life can be if you dedicate yourself and focused energy to your creative side, and what it's like being artist hitting 80 years of age and where his art will go from here.https://www.medicinemangallery.com/search/?q=fred%20borcherdt
