The strain of cynicism that characterizes so much of Alex Garland's filmography is at its most pronounced in his latest, CIVIL WAR. But paired with Garland's 2002 debut as a screenwriter, Danny Boyle's 28 DAYS LATER, an interesting counterpoint emerges in their shared acknowledgement, even hope, that humanity could perhaps find a path forward through catastrophe. So after spending some time wallowing in the muck of CIVIL WAR's muddy politics and unsettling violence, we examine that mutual glimmer of hope in Connections, as well as the similar back-and-forth rhythms and character parallels of these two road movies. And in Your Next Picture Show we recommend the sequel that provides a different filmmaker's answer to that question of where humanity goes next, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 28 WEEKS LATER. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about 28 DAYS LATER, CIVIL WAR, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.

If you want to succeed with fantasy and make it a transformative experience, you have to create real characters. To convey realness, you have to go beyond the “good versus evil” narrative of traditional fantasy movies. You have to create duality. In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, to discuss: Why Juan Carlos became a filmmaker The complicated family dynamics in his film, Damsel Why he loves portraying duality in the characters Why you always have to have a plan, even if you don't stick to it How he prepares for production A happy accident that became one of his favorite shots The inspiration behind the violent fire in the movie Creating a proper fire simulation Why you have to chase your own voice Memorable Quotes “I thought ‘oh my god I have to make movies like this.' ” [5:46] “I'm much more willing to show the grey zone, because I think that takes you into the reality.” [11:35] “You have to give space to happy accidents.” [16:26] Mentioned: Damsel Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! Writer/Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo discusses being inspired at a young age by Alfred Hitchcock, getting the call to direct 28 Weeks Later, and the perils of directing a VFX-heavy film like Damsel.
Escuchar audio

INFECTION HIT! And as I lay in hiding in my house, I decided to record a special episode on a film about people hiding in a house as an infection hits. How meta is that?
Going deeper into the Underground, we go deeper into ourselves. That is the psychological highlight of Episode 4 where we dig deep into the climactic underground scene in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later. A sequel to the Danny Boyle film, 28 Days Later, Fresnadillo's film used pioneering camera techniques and a robust cast (including Robert Carlyle, Imogen Poots, Jeremy Renner, and Rose Byrne) winding their way through London hoping to escape a new outbreak of the Rage virus. For all the thrills in this action-heavy horror, its most intense and horrific moment happens on the platform of Charing Cross Underground.

Welcome everyone to another episode of Nerds Amalgamated, we would like to take a moment and congratulate all those who are graduating university, school, or just having an excellent week. “The pursuit of knowledge is never ending. The day you stop seeking knowledge is the day you stop growing. Brandon Travis Ciaccio.” So, no we have set a serious mood let’s look at the first topic, which is that video games are an excellent way to combat loneliness. Also, that video games are helpful for men to combat issues such as social isolation and stress for men in today’s society. That’s right, read that correctly, video games are beneficial to men’s health and should be encouraged. What to know more to help develop those arguments for the girlfriend or boss, listen in and find out what we are talking about.Next up Buck has decided to bring us a mystery to try and solve. Now who doesn’t love a good puzzle? If like Buck you love sitting down with a crossword, a Sudoku or reading a good detective novel then you will love this. We have a mystery that is 500 hundred years old, has some of the most baffling elements and to top it off has stumped many professional investigators over the years. We are talking about a mass murder that struck fear in the hearts of the population of England. This is a mystery that is guaranteed to get you remembered in history if you solve it. Want to know what Buck has unveiled for us to ponder, listen in and find out.Now Ben Affleck is not someone who we get excited about, in fact he makes Buck yawn at the mere mention of his name. In fact I just yawned at the thought, crikey why are we talking about him? Well, it appears that he has a movie in the works that is looking kind of good, it is a topic that we hope he does justice to. Now we know that Hollywood has failed to deliver anything great for some time now, but this story has potential. We aren’t going to hold our breathe, and not just because of Benny boy of the sleep inducing performance. The reality is that the story is one that needs to be told with a sensitivity and care that is hard to deliver. This is something the likes of Spielberg should be directing. Want to know what it is we are talking about? You know what to do.As usual we have the regular shout outs, birthdays, remembrances, and special events. We hope you enjoy this episode and if you want to give us feedback we are always happy to hear from you. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo broke onto the international scene with "28 Weeks Later," the sequel to Danny Boyle's film, and has been tied to a number of high-profile Hollywood projects since, including the just-announced "Pet Sematary" remake. But it's his feature film debut, 2002's "Intacto," that one only need look at to understand why this writer/director is in such hot demand. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we begin our Foreign Language series with a show about this fascinating movie from Spain about people who gamble not to win money, but to win luck. We talk about the fantastic element of this story — the idea that luck is something that can be taken from other people through touch or photos — and how it works in the film. We discuss the problems with the script that we have and the struggle to fully understand all of it on a single viewing, even though it's so easy to look past these issues while enjoying this film. We chat about the global feel of the film and how interesting it works as a movie made by a first-time feature filmmaker, creating a project that truly gives an immense sense of scale and a complex sense of the world. And Andy goes on and on about his fascination for the Malaysian Jungle Nymph, aka the Heteropteryx dilatata, the giant bug that lands on Tomas' head in the film, and how he wants to raise his own. (Pete, on the other hand, is whole-istically against it.) It's a great way to kick off our foreign language series. If you haven't seen the movie, definitely check it out, then tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we’re doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it’s just a nice thing to do. Thanks!!
