On this week's program, your host, Justin Mog, takes a hike with Terrell Holder, Vice-Chair of the Greater Louisville Sierra Club and Chair of the Kentucky Chapter. Terrell is part of a group that will be lobbying the mayor to appoint a sustainable development expert to the board of the nascent Louisville Economic Development Alliance (LEDA). As it stands, the LEDA board has no one of that description. Basically it's a big “Business As Usual” group. Terrrell briefs us on his meeting this past Thursday with Pat Malloy, Interim CEO of LEDA. We also have a robust discussion of how sustainable development is different from the common understanding of sustainability. And we share the good news that Louisville Metro Government, through its Office of Sustainability, has just published a Request For Proposals to assist in the development of a Louisville Green Bank. This important effort will better position Metro to meet its established goals of 100% clean energy and net zero greenhouse gas emissions community-wide by 2040, advance equity and environmental justice, mobilize private capital towards environmental goals, and receive and distribute funding through the federal Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. There will be a Q&A session on Thursday, November 21st at 11am online, with proposals due December 11. Learn more at https://louisvilleky.gov/government/sustainability/louisville-green-bank Tune in and you'll also hear about Sierra Club's recent Annual Gathering and the upcoming Greater Louisville Sierra Club November Program on Bernheim Forest: Strategies for Conservation in the 21st Century. Elly Brown is the executive director of the San Diego Food System Alliance, a network of more than 100 organizations working to make our current food system more equitable, healthy, and sustainable through collaboration, policy change, education, and community empowerment. We talk about the launch of The San Diego Food System Alliance Food Vision 2030 with the understanding that the time to reimagine and reconfigure our food system is now. There is no question that the current path of our food system is unsustainable and transformations must take root at the community level. Decisions made about food have a powerful ripple effect in all aspects of society. Changing the way we grow food, move food, share food, and think about food ultimately changes the way we treat the planet and each other. On October 22nd, Food Vision 2030 Annual Gathering will be held. Location to be determined. https://sdfoodvision2030.org/ https://www.sdfsa.org https://m.facebook.com/sdfoodsys/ https://instagram.com/sdfoodsys?utm_medium=copy_link We are proud to support and recommend Kitchens for Good. Kitchens for Good's mission is to break the cycles of food waste, poverty, and hunger, through innovative programs in workforce training, healthy food production, and social enterprise. The program is a tuition-free, certified culinary apprenticeship program that trains individuals with barriers to employment to launch their career in the culinary and hospitality industry. The program specifically serves individuals who are experiencing significantly high unemployment rates: formerly incarcerated adults, foster youth transitioning out of the system, survivors of domestic violence, individuals with mental health disorders, and individuals with histories of substance abuse. Anarchists In Conflict: Rojava + Yellow Vest Movement (Sean Swain at 6:28, interviews begin at 14:05) This week on The Final Straw, the episode's theme is anarchist interventions in struggles around the world. We'll be sharing audios from comrades in the A-Radio Network, which just had it's 5th Annual Gathering in Zurich, Switzerland. The A-Radio Network is made up of stations around Europe, plus a smattering in South + North America. We have been a member of the ARN for 4 years now, which over the last year and a half produces the monthly B(A)DNews: Angry Voices From Around The World news podcast in English, made up of contributions by A-Radio member-projects. You can find past episodes at our website. In lieu of this month's BADNews, the gathering produced an 8 hour radio show last week and elements of this broadcast. We'll present here two interviews from that broadcast concerning the struggle for autonomy in the social revolutionary region of Rojava, in northern Syria. The first is with a fighter with the Tekosina Anarsist (Anarchist Struggle, starts at 42:49) and the second with Zaher Baher, a member of the Kurdish Anarchist Forum in London (starts at 57:04). well as one from another an interview conducted a week ago with an anarchist in Paris, France, involved with the Yellow Vest (Gilets jaunes) social movement in France for some updates and perspectives. But first, we'll be airing audio from another member of the A-Radio as well as Channel Zero Network projects, Dissident Island Radio from London in the U.K., with an interview about the geopolitics of Rojava and leadership within the Kurdish struggle with a comrade participating in the annual ‘Long March‘ in solidarity with Abdullah Öcalan (starts at 14:05). We apologize for the audio quality. We invite you to note the differences of opinion between the anarchists who've witnessed, lived in, or fought for the Rojava Revolution, as somewhere within and between their perspectives I believe lies some of the truth of the complex situation there. Guest: Michael's Son joins the show from California ARTICLE 1: Federal officials: Eastern Pequots, second tribe have ‘exhausted’ recognition efforts Published June 07. 2016 6:44PM | Updated June 08. 2016 1:00AM By SUSAN HAIGH HARTFORD (AP) — The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs has notified two state-recognized tribes in Connecticut that they've exhausted both administrative and judicial remedies for gaining federal recognition, a claim rebuffed by the leaders of both tribes who vowed to keep pursuing their applications. R. Lee Fleming, the director of the Office of Federal Acknowledgement, said "the only available remedy" now available to the Historical Eastern Pequot Tribe in North Stonington and the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation in Kent is Congress passing legislation granting them federal recognition. Fleming sent similar letters to the Eastern Pequots on June 2 and the Schaghticokes on April 25. The recognition would make the tribes eligible for federal aid for such things as housing, health care and education. It also would give them the ability to pursue economic development, such as casinos. Richard Velky, chief of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, said the letter sent to his attorney came as a complete surprise. He said the tribe does not have any applications currently pending. "I was taken aback. Why is this guy sending my attorney a letter like this when we requested nothing from him," Velky said. http://www.theday.com/statenortheast/20160607/federal-officials-eastern-pequots-second-tribe-have-exhausted-recognition-efforts Article 2: Gathering of Nations Announces New ABQ Home at Tingley Coliseum The 34th Annual Gathering of Nations will be from April 27 to 29, 2017. Seemingly without irony or self-awareness, she uses the images of powerful women of color like Shirley Chisholm to sell her campaign to women, working people and people of color. Many who identify themselves as feminist seem to believe that any progress made by an individual woman, particularly a wealthy white woman, translates into progress for the rest of us. It does not. Wealth does not trickle down, nor does societal power. Dismantling oppression just doesn’t work that way. A few token members of an oppressed group being allowed into the halls of power will not set the rest of us free, and it’s disheartening to see people in 2016 still looking to women like Gloria Steinem, Madeline Albright and Hillary Clinton as saviors of women. Another such case, this time regarding the Colorado caucus, has just been revealed, thanks to reporting by The Denver Post. On April 12, the Colorado Democratic Party admitted to miscounting the results in ten percent of the state’s precincts in caucus. The Denver Post discussed in detail the potential consequences of this miscount: ‘The mistake is a minor shift with major implications. The new projection now shows the Vermont senator winning 39 delegates in Colorado, compared to 27 for Clinton. Even if Clinton wins all 12 superdelegates in the state, Sanders can finish no worse than a split decision. The new count contrasts with prior projections from The Post, Bloomberg Politics and The Associated Press that indicated Clinton would probably win the majority of the 78 delegates in Colorado because of her support from party leaders with superdelegate status. If Sanders lands one Colorado superdelegate — two are still undecided and others are facing significant pressure — he could win the state’s delegation.’ What is most controversial about this issue isn’t the fact that a mistake was made, but the fact that a mistake was made and the Colorado Democratic Party tried to cover it up rather than fix it. The Sanders campaign was not informed about the miscount, while the Clinton campaign was. Full Article here: http://usapoliticus.com/breaking-colorado-democratic-party-admits-error-bernie-sanders-could-win-majority-of-delegates/ (C) Bernie Sanders Campaign….Where does he/we go from here? June 7th Super Tuesday was being built up as the last of the Primaries, excluding Washington DC. as of the date of this broadcast, Bernie Sanders is still in the race, The media has declared Hillary Clinton of the “Presuptive Nominee” and President Obama and Vice President Biden have officially endorsed Clinton for President for the Democratic party. But….. What if you found out that there was voter fraud being pretreated on the American people? What if you found out that…out of no fault of your own…. your vote was never counted? As a “Good American Citizen” you were just doing your “Civil Duty” to cast your vote for either the person of your choice, or the person from the Party of your choice. So you went to your local polling place during this past primary season, and cast your vote. But what if it wasn't’ counted? Would you know? Would it it matter to you? We think it does….
