Moeten we vrezen voor een nieuwe energiecrisis zoals in 2022, of loopt het zo een vaart niet? ­ De oorlog in Iran katapulteerde de prijs van olie maandag ineens tot boven de symbolische kaap van 100 euro per vat. “Dat is veel, maar nog lang niet rampzalig”, sust Stijn Decock van onze economieredactie. “Net voor de economische crisis van 2008 kostte een vat ruwe olie zo'n 200 euro.” Zolang de voorraden in Europa aangevuld blijven, kunnen we nog niet van een crisis spreken. “België heeft nog voor ongeveer 92 dagen aan oliereserves, die voorlopig nog niet ingezet moeten worden”, kadert Wim Winckelmans. “Er is nog geen toevoerprobleem”. ­ Eén plus één is twee, zou je denken. Geen extreme kosten en geen probleem qua reserves betekenen dan ook dat er geen crisis om de hoek loert. University of Florida Professor and research engineer Nina Stark dives into the logistics of post-hurricane data collection. In 2024, as part of the Nearshore Extreme Events Reconnaissance (NEER) team, Stark deployed to the west coast of Florida before and after Hurricane Helene. As she tells her story, we understand how reconnaissance deployments work – with so many uncertainties -- and how anyone can get involved. Stark urges students and early-career researchers to join an Extreme Events group and connect with members.

Specializing in geotechnical engineering and coastal science, Nina Stark studies soil mechanics and soil responses to coastal and riverine stresses -- like hurricanes and related flooding. During hurricane season, you will find her in the field, collecting perishable data with NSF-supported extreme events reconnaissance teams.
