The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
In this compelling episode, Vishal Sunil, Co-Founder and CTO of Rocket Learning, offers a nuanced and forward-looking perspective on the intersection of artificial intelligence and early childhood education in India. Rocket Learning, a social impact organization working with over 3.2 million students across 10 Indian states, is radically transforming how foundational learning is delivered to underserved communities. The organization's vision is to ensure that every child, particularly those aged 0 to 6, reaches their full potential by empowering both caregivers and early childhood educators through scalable, tech-enabled interventions. Central to Rocket Learning's success is its deep integration with India's vast public daycare infrastructure, the anganwadi system. These centers, which serve a majority of the country's early learners, were historically under-resourced and underutilized for educational purposes. Rocket Learning is spearheading efforts to convert anganwadi workers into effective early childhood educators, a mission now backed at the national level through initiatives such as “Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi” — a government campaign that integrates nutrition with learning and is supported by a significant financial commitment. What sets Rocket Learning apart is its product philosophy: pragmatic, accessible, and deeply embedded in community. Rather than building flashy new platforms, the organization leverages ubiquitous tools like WhatsApp to facilitate parent-child and teacher-child engagement. Their pedagogy prioritizes social reinforcement by fostering community-based learning environments, where shared participation amplifies motivation and adoption. By rejecting highly individualized and gamified approaches in favor of communal learning, they offer an alternative paradigm rooted in behavioral science and cultural context. The discussion takes a particularly insightful turn as Sunil introduces Appu, Rocket Learning's new voice-based, AI-powered tutor developed in collaboration with Google.org. Appu is not merely a chatbot, but a human-centric educational interface designed to engage children in two-minute voice conversations tailored to their learning level, interests, and local context. The system is engineered with a guardrail framework — ensuring safety, consistency, and pedagogical alignment — while still offering dynamic, personalized experiences. This form of “guided discovery” allows children to learn through everyday interactions, and it encourages parents to participate actively in the process, thereby reinforcing learning through familial bonding. Multilingualism, minimal screen time, and culturally responsive design are at the core of Appu's development. The tool is already operational in several Indian languages and can be quickly adapted to new linguistic and regional contexts, with the ambition of one day serving learners globally. Importantly, Rocket Learning is not just interested in innovation for its own sake. As Sunil notes, the organization is committed to rigorous evidence-building. Their forthcoming randomized controlled trial, conducted in partnership with J-PAL, will offer critical insights into the impact of AI tutors on early childhood learning outcomes — potentially shaping global policy and philanthropy in this domain. Sunil's personal journey, from a data scientist in the United States to a purpose-driven social entrepreneur in India, is emblematic of a new generation of technologists who view scale not just as a metric, but as a moral imperative. His reflections are deeply grounded in the lived experiences of Rocket Learning's users — parents who sacrifice convenience for their child's future, and educators who evolve from caretakers to catalysts of cognitive development. Appu Nedungadi was an Indian writer best known as the author of Kundalatha, which was published in 1887, making it the first novel published in the Malayalam language
Bhola Shankar Reaction first 12 mins Idiot starts at 12:15 Credits Banner: Vaishno Academy Cast: Ravi Teja, Rakshita, Kota, Prakash Raj, Sangeetha, Ali, Jeeva, Giri Babu, Jr. Relangi, Bose, Narsing Yadav, Satya Narayana, Srinivasa Reddy Music: Chakri Cinematography: Shyam K Naidu Lyrics: Kandikonda, Bhaskarabhatla Ravi Kumar & Peddada Murthy Editing: Marthand K Venkatesh Art: Chinna Fights: Ram - Lakshman Story - Screenplay - Direction - Dialogues - Production: Puri Jagannadh Release date: 22nd August 2002 Context: Saw it on VHS way back, pretty sure it was my first intro to Raviteja, I didn't know who this guy was but over the years became a fan because of all the entertaining action comedies he made over the years. Only reason I remember it because of Choopultho Gucci Gucci song and then Rakshita was the heroine and then disappeared. Decided to rewatch for the podcast and the movie was actually really good. Very entertaining and obviously iconic. Interesting Facts: Main is that it is the remake of the Kannada movie Appu which starred Puneeth rajkumar and launched him to stardom and also starred Rakshita as the heroine. After Badri, Pawan Kalyan promised to do another film with Puri right after. Puri narrated him 4 stories and Idiot was one of them. Pawan didn't give the green signal. Narrated it to Mahesh Babu, he said no, Tarun said no, and he was looking for a mass story to give Raviteja a break. Then he made Bachi with Jagapathi Babu and had no offers in TFI so he went to Bangalore and got acquainted with raklumar family and directed the Kannada remake of Thammudu with Shivarajkumar titled Yuvaraja. It was successful Then he met Puneeth Rajkumar and launched him as hero with the movie Appu it became a super hit. But before it released, they had already started Idiot movie in Telugu. Puri and Raviteja had already worked together on Itlu Sravani Subramaniam, Budget was 2 crores when filming started. Political Chintakayala Ayyana Patrudu was a partner in the project and Puri produced the movie on Vishnu Academy banner. March 24th, 2002 filming started. Entire talkie portion was filmed in Hyderabad. They filmed two songs in Bangkok and from here started Puri Jagan's fixation with Bangkok. Back in Vijaywada Puri had a friend named Sreenu and he used to talk about himself and boast himself. Puri took him as inspiration for hero character and wrote it and then tagline was Seenu gaadi prima Katha. But since Raviyeja liked the name Chanti as it was his character's name in Sindhooram, Puri changed it to O chant gaadi prema Katha. Released on Chiranjeevi birthday August 22nd, 2002. The film opened up to Super-Duper Hit Talk. Ravi Teja's characterization was loved by all. Fans loved how Ravi Teja's character was carefree doing what comes to his mind, without hesitating about someone's opinion... The portrayal of the hero character seemed very new. Puri set a new definition for heroism in his own style, saying that the hero should have a strong mentality, behave straight forward, be different in the way of thinking, and not be cynical. Ravi Teja's body language was another highlight for the film. The budget invested on the film was 2.20 crores and it grossed 16 crores. Released with 45 prints, the film reached 100 prints after 4 weeks. It played for 100 days at 36 centers. The dialogue "‘Commissionerlu osthatu untaru, potu untaru, Chantigadu local, "Ye commissioner kuthurlaki mogudlu rara", and "Roju ee timelo ikkadikochi site kodtanani telusu kada, vachi nilabadalani telida?" are a highlight. The music album of the film is also a big hit. Songs like 'Chupulto Guchiguchi Champake' were a big hit at that time. 'Idiot' set a trend, especially the hero's role. Many similar scripts have been made. This is a concept that still does not bore. Raviteja age when this movie released was 34. He got his big break that long and waited almost 12 years. His first movie was Karthavyam back in 1990. It launched him to fame

Today I have Appupen with us on Audiogyan (loosely translated from Malayalam as grandfather). Appu is a noted graphic novelist and artist from Bangalore. He is the creator of graphic novels ‘The Snake and the Lotus’, ‘Moonward’, ‘Legends of Halahala’, ‘Aspyrus’ and the super hero satire series ‘Rashtraman’. His work is almost wordless narratives with sarcasm and irony. He is the founder/editor of Brainded India. Today we are here to know his thoughts and ideas about art, comics and more... What does art mean to you. Especially comics as an art form? Can you briefly share the kind of books you've written and the reasons for it? You work which I have seen or could comprehend, want to strongly communicate a message. If I can say, your work has a lot of despair - if yes, why? I mean I am saying this as layman, be it titles like Dystopian times, Halahala (which is poison), Aspyrus, brainded and so on… Also the kind of colour palate seems to be dark and grungy. Not just that, you characters like Rastraman, Propogandhi also has subtext to it. Whats going on in here? How would you respond to that? You don’t seem to like the idea of a superhero, or of gods or god-men either. Ironically you yourself are trying to create a superhero Ratrashman. Whats your response to that? Who is Rashtraman? I would also like to know what is BraindedIndia? Do comic as an art form gives you hope? How?

Aparajita Jamwal is lawyer who practices in Jammu High Court and Trail Court, Jammu and Kashmir. As cliched as it may sound, Aparajita always wanted to study law, litigate and do good for the community. Aparajita is also Abhimanyu's childhood friend. Abhimanyu and Appu (as Abhimanyu calls her) discussed: 1. Nuances of a rape case, 2. A lawyer's job and life as a lawyer 3. Public Interest Litigation (PIL) which also is Aparajita's forte with 99.9% success rate. 4. And of course a lot of gossip and college memories.

Sofia Crespo is an Art Director (and long-term aspiring Computer Scientist). Her interests go from memes (being the most relevant one) to microbiology, neuroscience, botany and human-machine collaboration.
