Cecil and Sally ep0102 Pet Names and Baby Talk
Brought to you by Keeneland Sales and powered by the KDTF.PTF ia back with you as he sits down in person with Dean Roethemeier of Keeneland Sales and they discuss two-year-old racing from Saratoga, Ellis Park and Del Mar on a terrific Saturday of racing across the country.
Dr. Claire Vallotton, a professor and researcher at Michigan State University who specializes in early childhood language development, joins Lisa Dent to explain why “baby talk” is essential for early language development. She breaks down the science behind tone, repetition, and bonding.
Here is another case of taking a successful movie and turning the general premise into a lackluster TV show. Though there is no connection between this show and Look Who's Talking, outside of slightly changed names, the similarities are there. Despite being called the worst show on TV in its first season, the show got a second season and remained bad.

Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 8-31-2025: Dr. Dawn interviews Katherine Rockwood and Jess Stevens, both registered nurses and breastfeeding advocates, during International Breastfeeding Month. They discuss community events including breastfeeding cupcakes at hospitals, partnerships with WIC (Women, Infants & Children) nutrition programs, and upcoming festivals featuring educational booths from various healthcare organizations. The conversation covers how these events aim to normalize breastfeeding and provide support resources for new mothers. The discussion explores milk donation programs, with Jess explaining her experience as a milk donor after becoming an "overproducer." They detail the screening process involving health questionnaires, blood tests, and milk quality checks before donation. The conversation addresses the high cost of donor milk at approximately $30 per ounce and insurance challenges, highlighting cases where fundraising helped provide donor milk for babies whose mothers couldn't breastfeed due to medical conditions like cancer. Dr. Dawn comments that breastfeeding a baby is like giving them a $100.00 restaurant meal daily. Katherine and Jess explain the superior benefits of breast milk over formula, particularly for premature babies who face risks like necrotizing enterocolitis from formula feeding. They discuss how the mother's breast milk composition automatically adjusts it's content for premature infants and how there is a 28-day window for establishing milk supply that affects long-term breastfeeding success. The nurses describe their support programs, including Katherine's "Baby Talk" group meetings where experienced mothers help newcomers learn breastfeeding techniques. They explain how group settings provide encouragement and demonstrate proper latching through observation and imitation. The discussion includes practical tips like playing jazz music and creating calm environments to facilitate milk letdown, drawing from Katherine's background in jazz clubs. Dr. Dawn explores the science behind breast milk, including human milk oligosaccharides that feed beneficial gut bacteria and establish healthy microbiomes. The conversation covers how breast milk changes throughout the day, with higher melatonin levels in evening milk, and how the antibody percentage composition shifts when babies are sick. Amazingly, breast milk becomes more yellow in color due to increased antibodies. They discuss how milk adapts for different aged children and even changes caloric content based on baby's gender with males receiving 25% more calories. The discussion addresses workplace and societal challenges for breastfeeding mothers, including the need for proper lactation rooms and supportive employers. They mention legal requirements for lactation spaces in California government buildings and the particular challenges faced by agricultural workers who lack adequate facilities. The conversation emphasizes the importance of community support and reducing guilt for mothers who cannot breastfeed. Dr. Dawn then shares statistics showing increasing breastfeeding rates, with 83.8% of babies receiving some breast milk and 25% exclusively breastfed for six months. The discussion covers additional maternal benefits including reduced breast cancer risk through complete breast tissue maturation, improved bone health through enhanced calcium absorption during breastfeeding, and natural birth control effects. They conclude by encouraging any amount of breastfeeding while supporting mothers who cannot breastfeed for various reasons.

In this in-studio episode of Smooth Brain Society, Sahir and Neil are joined by Dr. Kate Messenger as they explore the fascinating world of language acquisition. They discuss why children seem to pick up languages effortlessly, the challenges adults face when learning new languages, and even how bilingual brains store and mix languages. Expect a lively discussion about the theories behind language learning, including the critical period hypothesis and the role of environmental input, along with humorous takeaways about accents, passive constructions, and the everyday struggles of translating between languages. It turns out that humans and monkeys have a shared language when it comes to talking to babies.
In this episode, I answer a question from Kelli in Washington about how to respond when children use baby talk in the playroom. While it may seem like a small thing, baby talk always carries meaning in a session. I walk through three common reasons it shows up—regressive play, a bid for nurturance and safety, or a conditioned pattern—and explain how to stay attuned to what the child may be expressing through this behavior. I also share how to reflect baby talk in a neutral, nonjudgmental way, why it's important not to correct or redirect it, and how to respond when it's difficult to understand what the child is saying. As always, our goal is to allow space for whatever needs to emerge, trusting that with time and the right conditions, these behaviors shift as the child grows through the process of CCPT. Parents may pleasantly puzzle over the “goos” and “gahs” that their babies make, but now researchers say that baby talk shares patterns with the songs of humpback whales. What can that teach us about how children learn to talk, and how language evolves more broadly?
We're diving into part 4 of one of our favorite series, “Is This Normal?” We'll be exploring topics like: Is it normal for my husband to have absolutely no sex drive? Research supports the idea that the ability to learn language from such a young age is innate and pre-programmed into the human brain. As early as two months old, infants begin distinguishing sounds from their native language, showcasing their inherent capacity for language acquisition. By six months, they can even understand the emotional tones in speech. This built-in skill reflects God's design for human beings to communicate - not only with each other but ultimately with Him. Welcome to a brand-new Family Edition of The Tony Robbins Podcast! Join Tony Robbins, his wife Sage Robbins, and their dear friend and podcast host turned surrogate, Mary B., for an intimate, at-home conversation on the topic of CONSCIOUS PARENTING. In honor of Mother's Day 2024, Tony takes the interviewer's seat and talks to both Sage and Mary about the principles, strategies, tools, and learnings derived from their own journey as mothers. This enlightening conversation transcends traditional notions of parenting, as the trio explores the complexities of modern family dynamics. From blended families, stepparents, same-sex relationships, and co-parenting arrangements, Tony, Sage, and Mary discuss tips for how to make it work on the evolving landscape that is parenthood today. One of the highlights of this conversation is their working definition of MODERN CONSCIOUS PARENTING -- the shift from stress and fear-based parenting to an empowering and integrative awareness-based parenting. The family discuss the helpfulness of evolving from high-resistance parenting towards a more mindful, self-reflecting, and self-aware approach. By prioritizing both presence and connection, they explain how parents can create an environment that nurtures the growth of beautiful little human beings – an inside out job. The three also emphasize the significance of our language choices around children, advocating for curiosity over fury and mindfulness over fear. They also share personal anecdotes from their own experiences as parents, highlighting the impact of screen and other stimulus on children's emotional development, creativity, imagination and worldview. This episode offers invaluable insights for parents, prospective parents, and anyone interested in creating meaningful connections within their families. By embracing conscious parenting practices, Tony, Sage, and Mary invite listeners to embark on a journey of personal growth, self-discovery, and lasting harmony. Join us as we explore the transformative power of intentional parenting and discover how a slight shift in our focus can lead to profound changes with children and within ourselves!
