We simply cannot leave the upheaval that was season six of Designing Women without talking about the elephant in the room: the cast changes. America was glued to their TVs to see how Julia Duffy and Jan Hooks would fare in place of the beloved Delta Burke and Jean Smart. Thirty million strong for that matter. We'll discuss if they got a fair shake. Designing Women had some cast changes, but they didn't invent them. So we're going to talk about some iconic ones in other corners of TV. Who did it best? Who did it worst? And, most importantly, was there drah-mah?!?!
We can't possibly round out our coverage of season 6 without discussing the much-discussed, oft-aligned newbie, Allison. It's a big change, but how did we take it? Let's discuss. Salina's also going to bring us a Sidebar on Julia Duffy. And then come back Thursday for an Extra Sugar we're calling Cast Away. We're going to chat not only about the major Designing Women cast changes this season, but some other major - and less-major - cast shifts throughout TV history.
An overbearing aunt involves her nephew in murder, and things spiral from there in Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker. Grant joins us to talk about this early-1980s often-overlooked, bizarre movie.

Bang bang! We are here this month with Julia Duffy. You Might Know Her From Palm Royale; Designing Women; Newhart; Looking; Baby Talk; The Mommie; Intolerable Cruelty; and Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker. We got to chat with Julia about her incredible arc as Mary Meredith Davidsoul on Apple TV's starry Palm Royale. That finale twist, huh? She also gave us the scoop on playing Patrick's mom on Looking (and the importance of playing mom to a queer person), her iconic run on Newhart (7 Emmy nominations!), and her ‘90s run as “Julia Duffy, sitcom saver” including joining the powerhouse female ensemble of Designing Women. We also got to chat about Julia's book Bad Auditions, who was in those rooms with her, and what it was like playing a high school student at 30. Truly a treat! When Julia Duffy is not filming something to entertain and delight you, chances are she's reading a book. It's generally non-fiction, often historical, and in one notable recent case, it was all about a tiger. Don't worry, there isn't enough action in her detailed descriptions of these books to keep you awake at night. It's more like Julia, who starred as Stephanie on Newhart and as Mary Jones Davidsoul on Palm Royale, is doing your bedtime reading for you, so you can just shut your eyes and drift away for the evening. Julia even matches John Moe's mellow dulcet tones to get you extra tuckered out.The book Julia discusses is The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant.Hey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber?Email us at: sleepwithcelebs@maximumfun.org.Follow the Show on:Instagram @sleepwcelebsTwitter @SleepWithCelebsTikTok @SleepWithCelebsJohn is on Twitter @johnmoe.John's acclaimed, best-selling memoir, The Hilarious World of Depression, is now available in paperback.Join | Maximum FunIf you like one or more shows on MaxFun, and you value independent artists being able to do their thing, you're the perfect person to become a MaxFun monthly member.
Julia Duffy joins Mase & Sue to talk about her high society role in Apple TV+'s sixties set comedy-drama PALM ROYALE. They discuss how she landed the part, digging into her Minnesota roots to find her character, working with an all-star cast, the spot-on midcentury scenic and costume design. Also, her childhood obsession with Carol Burnett, the dream job of playing opposite Bob Newhart, garnering seven Emmy nominations, her journey into pursuing an acting career, whether it's harder for a woman to work as an actor that a guy, how the streaming vs advertising model has opened the door to content that appeals to older age groups, her deep admiration for stand-up comics and binge worthy crime shows. Plus, Mase's hammered evening at The Whisky, Sue's News – Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter, Kevin Bacon and a high school prom, their Kevin Bacon degree-age, celebrities who do cool things for fans, Kim Kardashian's quiet donation, a Triple A team's controversial mascot-naming contest and our biggest celebrity dinner tables.
Guest: David Yazbeck, Julia Duffy Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winning composer and writer David Yazbeck discusses his new project, a "play with music" for Audible, DEAD OUTLAW, based on Maine-born criminal and mummified side show attraction, Elmer McCurdy. Julia Duffy returns to the show to talk about her work on the Apple TV+ series PALM ROYALE, along with Allison Janney, Kristin Wiig, Laura Dern, and the legendary Carol Burnett.
"Homes and Jojo" (May 1, 1989) Newhart is a show about white people who live in the snow, and while 70s-era Bob Newhart sitcom is the one pop culture remembers better, this is the longer-lived, more-Emmy-nominated of the two. What the 80s-era Bob New1hart sitcom has working in its favor are future Simpsons showrunner David Mirkin, who gives a host of wacky townspeople not unlike what you'd find in Springfield, and the duo of Julia Duffy and Peter Scolari, who male a perfect yuppie couple worthy of mockery. We're getting silly on a brand new episode of George Kennedy is my Copilot with Greydon Clark's Airplane-inspired horror spoof WACKO from 1982 featuring Joe Don Baker, Stella Stevens, Julia Duffy, Andrew "not yet Dice" Clay and - of course - George Kennedy as the kinda creepy Mr. Doctor Graves! We also fit in a discussion on the Clint Black video for "Summer's Comin'" which features a lovely George Kennedy cameo (amongst a slew of other celebs). CHECK IT OUT! Brittany Snow plays a woman dumped by her boyfriend, but is invited to spend Christmas with his mom and dad. She agrees, and ends up meeting Justin Long. So, yeah, a meet cute, a wishing tree, a cute little village during the holidays, romance, oh... and vulgarity. A fair bit of vulgarity. Ashley & Matt talk about this new Christmas movie, on the latest installment of our 12 Days of Christmas series.
A show that George Clooney was quoted as saying was "a particular low point" in his career. "Baby Talk" was a television adaptation of the hit movie "Look Who's Talking" The show was created by Amy Heckerling, the writer and director of the original film and Ed Weinberger, who co-created such hit shows as "Taxi" & "The Cosby Show". The show was even originally slated to be called Look Who's Talking until it was determined that it may cause confusion with the sequel that would be airing concurrently. This show also readapted and recast the main characters so we don't see the likes of John Travolta and Kirstie Alley reprising their roles and instead of the baby being voiced by Bruce Willis the network went with Tony Danza who was already starring in the show "Who's The Boss" at the same time. Despite having the likes of Danza and Clooney involved in the project the show just didn't perform well. Shockingly a full second season was eventually ordered but not before a total re-haul changing nearly the entire cast and location. Those adjustments did little to improve ratings and the show was canceled at the conclusion of the season. But with all this in mind does the pilot episode have enough laughs to make you want to watch more? Listen as we do a deep dive of the show's pilot episode, "Baby Love". www.S1E1POD.com Starring: Tony Danza, George Clooney, Julia Duffy, Lenny Wolpe, Ted McGinley, & William Hickey

Wow! This classic manages to swaddle some truly transgressive, squirm-inducing discomfort in the gauzy warmth of William Asher's 1950s-60s television eyeball. I don't know what's happening to my body, but I don't like it. For a good time, watch this movie starring Jimmy McNichol, Bo Svenson, Julia Duffy, Steve Eastin, and an unfathomably epic performance from Susan Tyrell. Dinah came aboard to chat about penning her debut novel, a fictionalized coming of age tale about a moviestar with a Hollywood pedigree and a complicated relationship with the paparazzi. We also talked to Dinah about her own showbiz upbringing with actress mother Lee Grant and writer dad Arthur Manoff; the good, bad, and annoying of appearing on a network sitcom for seven years, winning a Tony for her Broadway debut in Neil Simon's I Ought to Be in Pictures, and appearing in our all time favorite movie Grease as Marty. Our PRIDE MONTH celebration continues with a look at the truly unusual, blood-streaked 1981 psychological thriller BUTCHER, BAKER, NIGHTMARE MAKER aka NIGHT WARNING. Billy, an orphaned teenager, finds himself being dominated by his increasingly unhinged Aunt Sheryl who's hell-bent on keeping him with her...at all costs. Despite its deceptively simple plot, BBNM is a remarkably layered film featuring a bravura performance from SUSAN TYRELL and enough twisted Greek Tragedy elements to make Oedipus blush. Given the time the movie was made, most surprising of all is its positive portrayal of gay men standing strong in the face of vicious homophobia, making it a perfect choice to round off PRIDE MONTH. “A Toe in the Water” (September 23, 1991) What is Designing Women minus Delta Burke and Jean Smart but plus Julia Duffy and Jan Hooks? An interesting beast that is different than the Suzanne/Charlene years, yeah, but still pretty damn interesting. Movie Meltdown - Episode 516 Settle in for an extensive discussion of the sci-fi "classic" - Battle Beyond the Stars. And this is a film that definitely gives us a lot to dig into, considering the movie is produced by Roger Corman, written by John Sayles, featuring music composed by James Horner, art direction and visual effects by James Cameron… just to name a few of it's notable crew. Plus a star-studded cast including Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, John Saxon, George Peppard, Julia Duffy and of course Sybil Danning. And while we come to realize we are vaguely humanoid in the wrong kind of ways, we also cover… Last Woman on Earth, electric kaleidoscope, Enter the Dragon, Harlan Ellison, Vincent Price, glitter is cool, a disgraced conquistador, a back alley that also just happens to be a space ship, George Lucas, Starcrash, Hephaestus, lots of dome shapes, The Wasp Woman, Eloi, sassy consciousness, protecting the village of the innocent, analog electronic toys, stealing from Kurosawa, he's an old prospector stuck inside of a giant egg timer, create a new kind of a world, Ray Harryhausen, always be selling, this is a pretty bored universe, it doesn’t matter how many of the pools leak, Bucket of Blood, almost everything from a plumber's supply store, in a brutal display of physical comedy, prancing lizard man, clone Borg, a space hell house, Gale Anne Hurd, perched on top of a pile of pirate treasure, Ingrid Pitt, space medieval, plasma balls, Bela Lugosi, high-concept science fiction, H. P. Lovecraft, finger on the pulse of the decade, a caulking gun, Bill Paxton, cycling through potential robot partners, the most awkward angle possible, spiral latex, hope for the future, shooting people from space, with a washable silk shirt, surreal pop art, why did your movies manage to become classics, five surgery-mutant thumbs up, Forbidden Planet, the league of local actors who all do the robot, a lot of uncanny valley, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Alec Gillis, Las Vegas in space, Caroline Munro, matte paintings, space hippies, captured by mimes, the development of special effects as a science, The Man Who Fell to Earth, a civilization of rubes, The Mission, Marcia Lucas and the worst Roomba ever. Spoiler Alert: We go into painstaking detail about the film Battle Beyond the Stars. So you should watch the movie before listening. You have been warned! “...this movie was like, it was trying to be, at times, a silly, sci-fi romp, but then would turn around and then just be utterly surreal, acid-trip of a film.”

Cloverleaf Radio's host The Host with the Most Jimmy Falcon welcomes the Actress Terry Bolo! Terry Bolo is originally from Detroit, Michigan, spent some formative years in Scottsdale, Arizona, and as a young teen, moved to Hollywood, California. She was a student at the Strasberg Institute in the early 70s and became one of the original founding members of the improv comedy troupe, The Groundlings. After 5 years of performing with the group, she went on to other theater and film projects (including a student in "Carrie", a party girl in "Big Wednesday", a passenger in "Airplane 2", and a biker chick in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure", to name just a few), including a stint as a casting assistant at Warner Brothers. She became a stand-in, first for children, and then worked with actresses Julia Duffy, and Roseanne Barr. On "Rosanne", she also worked as a dialogue coach. She has taught improv classes, and coached actors. Besides film and TV work, Terry is also a Hollywood tour guide. And she appears in the award-winning documentary "Strictly Background" which centers on Hollywood extras/background artists. JOIN US! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jianetwork/support
Creating something from nothing. In this episode I talk with Terry Bolo, cult film actress, about the birth of The Groundlings, an improvisational sketch comedy troupe and school that she was a part of, and Paul Reubens creating Pee-wee Herman and Pee-wee's Playhouse. We also talk about how she changed her diet to get off all pharmaceutical drugs, and of course, yoga. And she appears in the award-winning documentary "Strictly Background," which centers on Hollywood extras/background artists. The Groundlings are an improvisational and sketch comedy troupe and school based in Los Angeles, California. The troupe was formed by Gary Austin in 1974 and uses an improv format influenced by Viola Spolin, whose improvisational theater techniques were used by Del Close and other members of the Second City, located in Chicago and later St. Louis. They used these techniques to produce sketches and improvised scenes. Its name is taken from Shakespeare's Hamlet, Act III, Scene II: "...to split the ears of the groundlings, who for the most part are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumbshows and noise." In 1975 the troupe purchased and moved into its current location on Melrose Avenue.
This month's episode was recorded live at SF Sketchfest 2019 and it’s Andrew's all-time favorite of his own dead pilots. Inspired by his own mother, "Pearl" tells the story of a woman who receives a diagnosis of terminal cancer, and decides to use the time she has remaining to orchestrate the lives of her loved ones to her liking. Our cast for this one was incredible: Julia Duffy as Pearl, Tony Hale as Billy, Alice Wetterlund as Olivia, Craig Cackowski as Kurt, Atsuko Okatsuka as Sara, Lucy Davis as Joy, Keiko Agena as Arlene, Carla Cackowski as Deedee, Kevin Pollak as Len, Tawny Newsome as Shelby/Waitress/Quinn, Will Choi as Travis/Cicerone, Guy Branum as Doctor Hudson/Radio Announcer/Student #2, Joel Kim Booster as Henry/Student #1, and Andrew Reich with stage directions. Before the read, you'll hear Ben’s interview with Andrew where he discusses the process of developing this very personal story into a network sitcom. Enjoy! In June 2016, David Darlington, co-producer of Big Finish Production's Dark Shadows ranges, and I flew to New York to attend the Tarrytown celebrations for Dark Shadows' 50th Anniversary. When the fans visited the Big Finish tables, they all had requests for what they'd like to hear from the range... "Something with Julia", "More Tony and Cassandra", "Quentin and Laura in Eygpt", "More Tony and Cassandra", "What Happened Next to Adam", "More Tony and Cassandra"... All weekend, over and over, we were asked for further adventures of Tony and Cassandra. And it wasn't just us... when we were chatting with Lara Parker and Jerry Lacy about the stories they had both recently been writing for Big Finish they told us they'd been delighted by the requests for more they had been getting. ...So make more Tony and Cassandra we did. David and fellow co-producer Joseph Lidster got to work on The Tony and Cassandra Mysteries and - with script-editor Alan Flanagan - assembled their team of writers and a company of actors who could take on the guest roles in all four plays. And over in LA Jerry and Lara got ready to crack four more cases, this time joined by Jerry's wife, the multi award-winning Julia Duffy, as Tony's secretary Rita Channing. I attended the UK recording sessions and spoke to Davy, Joe and Alan... and the four writers and four guest actors to see what mysteries I could solve myself.
Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For
How many of us are lucky to have a bar we frequent where everybody knows our name? How about for 11 seasons? Hilarious comedian and writer Matt Manser joins host Cassi Jerkins to talk about the hit TV show “Cheers”! Matt watched the show as a kid learning many adult issues from it. Matt and Cassi get into the different characters that created such a dynamic ensemble which lead to the popular spin off show, “Fraiser”. Cassi learns that Frasier was originally written for one of her favorite actors of all time, John Lithgow, but Lithgow turned it down giving Kelsey Grammer the most prominent role of his acting career. (Honorable mention to Sideshow Bob). Cassi reflects upon John Lithgow’s career and her love for him a bit too long and Matt has to reel her back in.
