Four Grade 1 winners. Five millionaires. One big race. This weekend's Grade 2, $500,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct is punching above the weight of a December race, and it is the feature of the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Fox Sports and New York Racing Association racing analyst Richard Migliore will discuss the build-up to the race and how it came up so big. He also will talk about the other graded stakes on Saturday's card, including the Remsen Stakes (G2), a Kentucky Derby prep that last year produced championship contenders Dornoch and Sierra Leone. Trainer Rodolphe Brisset, who will saddle morning-line favorite Mullikin in the Cigar Mile, will look ahead not only to this weekend's feature but also to Liam in the Dust's bid to win the Demoiselle (G2), a points prep for the Kentucky Oaks (G1). Super Screener creator Mike Shutty will handicap the Remsen, the Demoiselle and, of course, the Cigar Mile. Co-host John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times will offer his perspective on the newly filed lawsuit by Churchill Downs Inc. and NYRA against the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. He also will help go through listener and reader feedback. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.

John Remsen, Jr. is one of the country's leading authorities on law firm leadership, management, marketing, and business development. He's the Founder of TheRemsenGroup, a consulting firm that works exclusively with law firms to help them develop and implement strategic objectives to improve cohesiveness, performance, and profitability. John is a frequent speaker and author on law firm leadership and marketing. He's spoken at conferences of the American Bar Association, Association of Legal Administrators, and the Legal Marketing Association. Additionally, his articles have appeared in publications such as the ABA Journal, Law 360, and Lawyers Weekly, among many other prestigious journals. In 2001, John created the Managing Partner Forum, the nation's richest source of information and a highly acclaimed conference series for leaders of midsize law firms. With decades of experience in law firm leadership and management, John knows that being an effective leader requires credibility, a firm-first attitude, a positive mindset, and the ability to be a catalyst for change. In this episode… No one is taught how to become an effective leader in law school. However, leadership is a crucial part of running any business. So where can leaders (and aspiring leaders) turn to develop their skills, support their firms, and become the best leaders possible? According to John Remsen, the key characteristics that set outstanding leaders apart include a firm-first attitude, optimism, communication skills, and the ability to enact change. But leadership goes beyond these attributes. John adds that leaders should also seek development outside of the industry, avoid tolerating toxic behaviors in the workplace, and make decisions that better the firm — instead of trying to make everyone happy. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman is joined by John Remsen, Founder of TheRemsenGroup, to talk about the qualities of effective leaders and why they're valuable within a law firm. John also shares advice on seeking support from other leaders and associations, the successful strategies law firms use to select their leaders, and tips to develop future leaders at your firm.

In the final year of the American Civil War, a special Union Army post was constructed just outside Philadelphia to handle a jumble of returning citizen-soldiers. Many soldiers bore bullet wounds, broken bones, and other scars of combat. Some had lost limbs. Some were laid low by illness. Hundreds arrived half-dead as survivors of wretched prison camps. Others were blessedly unscathed—but all grappled with the fresh, ferocious memories of their time at war. The post, known as Camp Discharge, did its best to move the young Union veterans on to their next assignment or, more often, back to civilian life. During its brief existence, it sat on a bluff overlooking what is today one of the nation's busiest highways, the Schuylkill Expressway. The post was quickly dismantled, its story forgotten. The authors reclaim that remarkable history and trace the often tumultuous lives of the Pennsylvania volunteer soldiers who passed through Camp Discharge's gates. Jim Remsen is a journalist and author of "Embattled Freedom: Chronicle of a Fugitive Slave Haven."

After six years apart, Lauren and Drew reunite in the Den of the Wizard of Remsen Street (noted literary critic Christian Lorentzen) to produce [sic] an episode that some will call unlistenable and others mumblecore. They bear witness to the completion of a new Lorentzen piece (“I'm going to see my editor at the bar later,” he says). Lauren fiddles fruitlessly with wires and mics she picked up from a listener/new friend serendipitously named Gunnar in Williamsburg, Drew sprawls out on the couch with an old Spanish guitar, and Christian's neighbor and pod supplicant Krithika Varagur shows up with salted licorice. Lorentzen, ever the solicitous host, supplies the discussants with Pepsi (Mexican, mid-century sugar), coffee (Chemex, poured over paper towel) and Miss Vickie's chips. You are listening to an excerpt of what was in fact a deep, deep--geologically deep--hang: Drew and Krithika bonded over incest and heroin in the work of Edward St. Aubyn, Lauren smoked Lorentzen's Camel Blues, and the critic himself typed away and commented on the mingling of smoke and afternoon sunlight in his study. In a state of classic Our Struggle delirium, Drew and Lauren finally vowed to face that evening's bar hang without chemical aid--raw-dogging life, as the kids say. In that vulnerable, intimate and perhaps diseased spirit, we humbly present our first-ever in-the-flesh episode, REMSEN STREET RAWDOG with Christian Lorentzen and Krithika Varagur --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ourstrugglepod/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ourstrugglepod/support

The Force (and certainly the comedic force) is with #BTLRadioShow on this May the 4th Monday thanks to a jam-packed show and some fabulous guests; so jam-packed, in fact, the show expands to 90 minutes this week! First up, say "welcome back" to writer/director MICHELE REMSEN who is back with us talking about her hilarious anti-romcom TOSS IT and worldwide VOD (Amazon Prime, AppleTV) screenings which culminated in a live Zoom Q&A with Michele and some cast and crew on May 4th courtesy of NYWIFT. Then take a listen to writer/director/editor BRUCE DELLIS talking about his new film, RAISING BUCHANAN! Funny and sweet, with added charm thanks to Rene Auberjonois in one of his final screen appearances, here as President James Buchanan, RAISING BUCHANAN is a lighthearted gem that boasts an unforgettable performance by Amanda Melby while giving us a bit of a history lesson on a man often dubbed "America's Worst President". I loved speaking with Bruce about the "history" behind this film and the "history" of President Buchanan. Imagine! A film that's entertaining and educational! We go in-depth on the importance of casting and in this case, the perfect blend of veteran "character actors" Rene Auberjonois and M. Emmet Walsh (Bruce and I both have some fun Emmet anecdotes) with a talented and diverse blend of folks like Amanda Melby, Kathy Shim, Terence Bernie Hines, and Steve Briscoe. Candid and passionate, Bruce talks about making the jump from short films to a narrative feature and the learning curve therein, as well as discussion on finding that perfect visual and emotional tonal bandwidth in collaboration with his cinematographer Bret Kalmbach. And how about showing some love for the beauty and diversity of Arizona by incorporating it into the story! Terrific film. Terrific conversation. We round out the show with a whole lotta laughter during life in the time of covid thanks to QUARAN TEAM and our exclusive interview with the creative team behind QUARAN TEAM - BOBBY CHASE, GREG AIDALA, and MIKE FEURSTEIN. Guaranteed to have you in stitches just listening to our pre-recorded conversation, you're in for even more laughs as you watch this episodic series set during, you guessed it, the covid quarantine! And with an entire office staff using Zoom, what could possibly go wrong?? The comedy is fresh and funny and laughs abound not only in the show, but on air! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Intel’s Steven Remsen made the cross-country trip from Portland, OR to Orlando for OPEX Week. We caught up with him to discuss process mining. Intel’s Steven Remsen made the cross-country trip from Portland, OR to Orlando for OPEX Week. We caught up with him to discuss process mining. Steven starts out with a quick history of a few special algorithms before noting the strengths of traditional mapping methods. As a practitioner, he understands the three basic steps of process mining from the academic space: discovery, conformance, and enhancement. Steve’s science background sets him apart from some other data scientists who see the black boxes of AI as collateral. Steven looks under the hood. After all, he notes, finding an AI solution to a business problem isn’t enough—it must be the correct solution. Next, Stephen shares a multi-million-dollar solution to a bottleneck in Intel’s fabrication process that was achieved through a quick and easy process mining activity. Next, Steven drives home the backbone of any successful AI implementation: people. In order to process mine in a holistic way, as Steven says, “It’s always people, process, technology.” He demonstrates this point with one more fantastic story about how data won’t work together if people can’t.

PHOTO: NYRA NYRA/Fox Sports Analyst Andy Serling joins Spencer for a fun conversation with a lot of great information for horseplayers including his thoughts on a new way to look at key races, a better way to use trainer stats, and why people who think the Remsen is a bad race are idiots. If you're "playing" along from home, aces covered are from AQU 12/7, the third, the seventh, and the ninth.
This week's podcast covers four SUPERB stakes races at Aqueduct including the Cigar Mile Handicap. Toss It is the story of smart-skeptical Emily and obsessive-compulsive-flirt Finn – (latter-day Rosalind Russel and Cary Grant types) who can witty-banter-for-days and seem a perfect match -- then everything gets tossed. Finn wonders why he’s so fucked up, and Emily wonders why she’s so drawn to him. Toss It explores women as the real power players because women, by and large, run and nurture the fundamental unit of society: family. And via this particular family, Toss It looks at Natalie blindly following what she thinks is woman’s role, Marie seems to know nothing but by the end attains some wisdom by actively exploring female options, Adele has wisdom but in retrospect re-evaluates women’s culpability in fostering dominant men, and Emily discovers the age-old Socrates’ maxim ‘I know that I know nothing’ applies to herself – pushing her to learn what really matters. While Emily evolves, Finn seeks to discover ‘why he’s so fucked up’ - and finally, together, they toss everything they know, in this entertaining film that opens a dialogue for the audience to continue long after it ends. I'm very excited about this episode of BEHIND THE LENS as we welcome back two wonderful filmmakers, one with a new film that was just released, and the other with a film we've followed since the festival circuit which now has distribution and is available for all. Our first guest is writer/director/producer/editor QUINCY ROSE talking about his latest film, THE NARCISSISTS. It's a true joy to have Quincy join us again. #BTLRadioShow has had the privilege of showcasing all three of Quincy's feature films and having Quincy on hand to talk about each. With a storied cinematic pedigree, this latest love letter to New York City handily shows us whom a couple of his filmmaking influences are. Take a listen as he talks about casting this four-person ensemble, crafting the dialogue, showcasing New York – and not the iconic images, but rarely seen gems, embracing "the still" of the camera while life just moves on, sound design, and of course, some exquisite jazz musical pieces. Then, writer/director/producer MICHELE REMSEN is back talking more about her feature directorial debut, TOSS IT. Fresh off a visit to Cannes Film Festival, Michele has words for the wise when it comes to film distribution, not to mention considerations for filmmakers contemplating heading to Cannes on their own dime. Listen as Michele fills us in on her filmmaking journey and the events that have transpired since her last visit to #BTLRadioShow when TOSS IT was on the fest circuit. But before our special guests join the fun, we've got excerpts of our exclusive interview with writer/director GAVIN HOOD as he talks about the powerful and important OFFICIAL SECRETS. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
EPISODE 298: This is the first of a two-part celebration of Brooklyn Heights, a picturesque neighborhood of architectural wonder, situated on a plateau just south of the Brooklyn Bridge. A stroll through Brooklyn Heights presents you with a unique collection of 19th century homes -- from wooden houses to brownstone mansions, all preserved thanks to the efforts of community activists in the 20th century. But in this episode, we'll explain how they got here. And the answer can be found on almost any street sign in the neighborhood -- Pierrrepont, Hicks, Middagh, Remsen. Those are more than just street names. Each sign traces back to an original landholder who developed this special place in the early 19th century. In a way, the neighborhood tells its own story. By then, the land once known as Clover Hill had seen its share of both tranquility and drama, the former site of a Revolutionary War fort and a crucial evening in the saga of the Revolutionary War. But in the 19th century, most Americans knew Brooklyn Heights for more than just architecture and George Washington. This was the home to respected cultural institutions and to scores of churches, so many that the borough received a very spiritual nickname. FEATURING: Henry Ward Beecher, Robert Fulton, the Marquis de Lafayette and, of course, the Lady Montague. boweryboyshistory.com Support the show.

BookSpeak Network Sunbury Press Books Show Lawrence Knorr hosts JIm Remsen author of the Civil War-era history Embattled Freedom. About the Book: Chronicle of a Fugitive-Slave Haven in the Wary North Rural Northeastern Pennsylvania was a bucolic farming region in the 1800s—but political tensions churned below the surface. When a group of fugitive slaves dared to settle in the Underground Railroad village of Waverly, near Scranton, before the Civil War, they encountered a mix of support from abolitionists and animosity from white supremacists. Once the war came, 13 of Waverly’s black fathers and sons returned south, into the bowels of slavery, to fight for the Union. Their valor under fire helped to change many minds about blacks. Embattled Freedom lifts these 13 remarkable lives out of the shadows, while also shedding light on the racial politics and social codes they and their people endured in the divided North. The men had found a safe haven in Waverly, but like other people of color in the 1800s and early 1900s, their freedom was uneasy, their battle for respect never-ending. Dysfunction, hypochondria, and comedy are the watchwords for this episode of BEHIND THE LENS as we talk live with MICHELE REMSEN, MATT PORTER, and MAX AZULAY. First up is writer/director/actor MICHELE REMSEN talking about her debut feature directorial TOSS IT, a comedy that in many respects harkens to the early days of screwball comedies with witty and biting banter punctuated with comedic hijinks, most notably "The Philadelphia Story". Listen as Michele talks about the creative genesis of TOSS IT and how it morphed into being a feature film on the page and then onto the screen. Plus, her thoughts on directing, casting chemistry, working with a small ensemble, cinematography and color, and more! At the midpoint of the show, co-writers/co-directors/actors MATT PORTER and MAX AZULAY are on hand talking the fun-filled 5 DOCTORS. Listen as Matt and Max talk about their very long journey into bringing 5 DOCTORS to life, as well as the experience of setting a film in their hometown and revisiting and incorporating their old stomping grounds into the production. And how about their co-creative and co-directing processes? But before you hear from our live guests, take a listen to what Martin Freeman has to say about his role of Agent Ross in the blockbuster BLACK PANTHER. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Written & directed by Michele Remsen (“Juke,” "Two in the Morning”), Toss It will make it’s world premiere during the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival at the LA Live Regal Cinemas on Sunday, February 25th. Opening on the last two bitter singles at a wedding -- smart-skeptical Emily and obsessive-compulsive-flirt Finn – (latter-day Rosalind Russel and Cary Grant types) who can witty-banter-for-days and seem a perfect match -- then everything gets tossed. Finn wonders why he’s so fucked up, and Emily wonders why she’s so drawn to him. A younger couple, sophisticated parents, a wise great-uncle, and a flaky friend impact both, driving them apart until they take a leap. Then a major curve-ball hits, the curtain gets pulled-back on dearly held traditions and reveals what made them who they are. Discovering the real-deal goes down in back-hallways, Finn and Emily kick against convention to find some kind of truth of their own. Toss It explores women as the real power players because women, by and large, run and nurture the fundamental unit of society: family. Director and screenwriter joins us to talk about love, relationships, fast-paced filmmaking and writing modern day cinematic dialog. hollywoodreelindependentfilmfestival.com micheleremsen.com/TossIt Get tickets to see Toss It at: HRIFF tossitthemovie.com Twitter: @TossItMovie Follow Michele Remsen on twitter.com/micheleremsen?lang=en

Join us this week as we welcome country pop music singer songwriter, Danika Portz. Hailing from Remsen, IA., and currently residing in Nashville, TN., Danika has caught the attention of several record labels and publishers around town. Her distinctive sound and style is what sets her apart from the typical country act as her music has been described as a mixture of Mumford and Sons, Kacey Musgraves, and Katy Perry with a voice on par with Norah Jones. Lyrically grounded in country music, yet unafraid to think outside the box melodically, Danika phrases things in such a way that grabs the listener and makes them want more. In Nashville, Danika performs at the Bluebird Café as well as the historic Hotel Indigo, Douglas Corner, and Antique Archaeology (History Channel's American Picker's antique shop). Danika's current album "Set The World On Fire" is available at all good digital retailers. In addition, Danika is currently preparing for a overseas tour with Armed Forces Entertainment this month to entertain the troops. We will talk to Danika about her upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at her music, feature her latest songs, and ask her to share her message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Danika Portz at http://www.danikaportz.com/ and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and speak live with Danika during the show (718) 766-4193. If you would like to participate in the live chat during the show, you must sign up on the show site first and then log in during the show. And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Be sure to join us, Thursday 5/28/2015 at 8:30 PM EDT! Our message to the troops....WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.

Flick Coleman reads an excerpt from The Life of Ira Remsen by Frederick Getman, published by Journal of Chemical Education. (3:37) "A greenish blue liquid foamed and fumed over the cent and over the table. The air in the neighborhood of the performance became dark red. A great colored cloud arose. This was disagreeable and suffocating."
