In this episode we delve into the astonishing, adrenaline-fueled life of Colton Harris-Moore, infamously known as the "Barefoot Bandit." From his less than idyllic childhood and rocky homelife on Camano Island of Washington state to becoming a modern-day folk hero to some, and a juvenile con-artist skilled at escaping the consequences of his crimes to many others, Colton's story is one for the books. We follow his jaw-dropping crime spree involving stolen cars, boats, and even planes! How did a teenage runaway, with no formal flight training, manage to elude law enforcement after committing numerous crimes on Orcas Island and elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest, fly across state lines, and eventually flee the US altogether to evade capture for so long?We discuss his many infamous, and (literal) barefoot getaways, the media frenzy surrounding him, and the multiple shocking crash landings prior to his capture. He evaded authorities on both continental, and tropical, international islands from the San Juan Islands of the Puget Sound to the more densely populated Abaco, on to Eleuthra, and the pink sand beaches of Harbour Island. For true crime fanatics this episode has it all—daring escapes, FBI manhunts, and even a dramatic boat chase as Colton continued his criminal antics and island-hopping ways in the Bahamas! Colton Harris Moore (born March 22, 1991)[10] is an American former fugitive. He was charged with the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in property, including several small aircraft, boats, and multiple cars, all committed while still a teenager.
In the shadowy corners of the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State, Colton Harris-Moore emerged not merely as a troubled teenager but as a captivating figure who danced on the edge of legality. He became infamous as the "Barefoot Bandit," a moniker earned from his habit of executing crimes shoeless. Harris-Moore's crimes weren't petty acts of vandalism but a spree that captured the nation's imagination and law enforcement's frustration. His escapades included stealing cars, boats, and even airplanes—an improbable feat for someone with no formal training. His ability to evade capture became legendary, turning him into a media sensation and earning him a legion of online admirers who viewed him as a modern-day folk hero. But not everyone was enamored. Critics pointed to the trail of victims left in his wake, each one facing the reality of lost property and violated privacy. The debate raged: Was he a Robin Hood figure or simply a criminal? One thing is for sure. Colt was just a kid. We find the good aspects of our lesser favourites and the weaknesses in our beloved favourites. Josh plays contrarian on the best episode of the original series but sides with conventional wisdom on the best episode of 'The Next Generation', plus a discussion on how Star Trek continues to push the boundaries of representation and diversity in their utopian future and our ideas how they could boldly go even further. This week Johnboy takes on the story of the traumatized child who started thieving for survival before becoming a folk hero who successfully evaded police for years while teaching himself how to steal and fly planes from the Puget Sound to the Bahamas during his time as a fugitive, challenging society! The boy was tired, dirty and hungry. He climbed up the side of the house using the window ledge to boost himself up to the roof. He'd been to this house before. His muddy bare feet barely left a mark on the metal roof. His tracks snaked along the roof line then disappeared near the window that, he knew, had been left unlocked. He quietly slipped inside. The house was currently unoccupied but he was quiet nonetheless. He crouched listening to the silence just to make sure. When he was reassured that he was alone, he made his way downstairs to the freezer. Inside, was just what he needed, frozen pizza and ice cream. The thought of food made him smile. He started the oven, placing the pizza inside then showered while it cooked. He started a load of laundry too. He ate his pizza while watching TV then made sure to clean up afterwards. Feeling warm, clean and satiated he decided he'd sleep here tonight. It certainly beat sleeping outdoors like he was used to. This hungry boy, named Colton Harris Moore would grow into a 19 year old felon and "folk hero", who had a penchant for stealing boats and planes. His final act was stealing an airplane in Bloomington, Indiana and crashing it in the Bahama islands hours later. The people of Mount Vernon might hate him but the world loved him, today we are talking about Colton Harris Moore aka the Barefoot Bandit. He stole America's hearts one plane at a time but didn't escape the feds in the end. An impressive teenager, he went downhill in the year 2016, it is a true shame when you get to know your hero's. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bookcult/support

Welcome to the 28th episode of Wild Society! In the sleepy town of Amityville, New York, a large Dutch Colonial style home sits elegantly along the Amityville River on a picturesque street of other comfortable waterfront houses. As you drive down the quiet street, passing the stately mansion at what was once 112 Ocean Ave, it’s almost unfathomable to imagine the horrors that happened to the Dafeo family in the early morning hours of November 13, 1974. What transpired from that event forever changed the town of Amityville, and shot the once peaceful town into permanent spotlight.Authorities struggled for 2 years to find teenage Colton Harris Moore aka the Barefoot Bandit. He was on the run after countless burglaries. Colton continued to baffle the community when he was successful at stealing and flying multiple airplanes, most of the time while barefoot, and without any formal training. For Colton it was all the thrill of the game, and his extreme passion for airplanes.Check out our merch hereSee all of our episodes hereSend us case ideas, or personal stories hereBird Song by Sherree ChamberlainAmityville Murder Sources:All That’s InterestingFancy Pants HomesWikipediaTopicAmityvillemurders.comBarefoot Bandit Sources:CBS NewsCBS NewsLA TimesBBCWikipediaFox NewsSeattle TimesCNNHerald Net
On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we bring you a strange brew of True Crime and talk about the Barefoot Bandit. If you aren’t from the Pacific Northwest, you may not have heard about this kid, but it’s quite a ride! The Bandit, named Colton Harris Moore, was a teenager who went on an international crime spree. His crimes? Breaks-ins to survive out in the woods, mostly. But then there were a few dozen cars. Oh, and the airplanes that he taught himself how to fly and to steal. Oh, and a crazy boat chase in the Bahamas! The Barefoot Bandit came from a very rough, broken home, and he started to live out in the woods as young as the age of 7. He started to break into vacation homes to survive, something that carried on through his teens. This guy was a genius, evading police endless times by escaping in the woods like a sasquatch ninja. He started on Camano Island in Washington, and eventually was being chased by cops, feds, and an army of organized bounty hunters. What led the Barefoot Bandit to his final stolen airplane destination of the Bahamas? How did the locals treat him there? How did he learn to fly? Why didn’t he wear shoes? What’s up with the guy named Harley Davidson Irownwing? Listen, laugh, learn? From a dilapidated mobile home on rural Camano Island to the warm island breezes of the Bahamas, the legend of the Barefoot Bandit’s international crime spree has inspired books, movies and countless ballads.A poor kid from a broken home, Colton Harris Moore was hell bent on living the high life, sleeping in luxury homes, driving fancy cars and flying private airplanes, even if those luxuries weren’t his for the taking.Whether he was a modern-day Robin Hood or an envious teen with no regard for his many victims, there’s one thing that’s indisputable, Colton was a smart kid from a troubled home who wasn’t afraid to follow his dreams… no matter the cost.It would all come to a head on a hot summer night in 2010.After nearly two years on the run, the Barefoot Bandit was spotted at a marina on Harbor Island in the Bahamas. Someone called out to him, but the Bandit dropped his shoes and shirt on the dock and jumped into the water. He swam out into the darkness and managed to climb onto a boat with the keys still inside. But, the police were hot on his tail in a yacht of their own. They gave chase, firing at the stolen boat, disabling the engine. The bandit was cornered, but he wasn’t ready to give up just yet. He took out a gun and pointed it at his head, threatening to pull the trigger. In the end, he decided to give himself up instead. Still barefoot, the Bandit was handcuffed and taken back to shore, to the police station, where he was met by throngs of followers. Some of them were cheering his capture. Others, just trying to catch a glimpse of the poverty-stricken teen who made his dreams his reality. At least for a time. But, he’s not the only kid who’s ever grown up with big dreams or rebelled against his troubled past. So, how did he get here? Why Colton? And, where is he now?

The legend of the Barefoot Bandit is the story of an epic crime spree involving hundreds of burglaries and millions of dollars of stolen luxury cars, planes, and boats. The crimes went on for years and crossed state and international borders. The crimes earned the Barefoot Bandit the unenviable title of FBI’s Most Wanted. But what makes the story legendary is that the Barefoot Bandit - was a teenager. TVNZ's new streaming service has one key aim: to increase the amount of Kiwi content available to kids. Chris Schulz and Karl Puschmann investigate.Ask Amie Mills why Kiwi kids need to see themselves on TV, and she'll pause, apologise for pausing, then say this: "I lose words when I think about how important it is."Mills, the children's commissioner for TVNZ, explains her loss of words with a shocking piece of research: "We've had some fascinating conversations with teachers. They're astounded by how many children are turning up to school aged 5 with American accents."Kiwi kids starting school with American accents? What gives? How does this happen? By watching too many American TV shows via American streaming services, that's how.Heihei hopes to change all that. The NZ On Air-funded online streaming service launches next week with the express aim of increasing the amount of New Zealand-orientated content available to kids. It's ad-free, features shows that use New Zealand people, place names and te reo, and uses Kiwi kids or characters wherever possible.Mills believes that's an important mandate to follow."I can't think of anything more important as a child growing up to see and hear yourself (on screen)," she says."My hope is that we've got kids reconnecting with New Zealand stories, places, sounds, and we build up that love of local content."Heihei lives up to that statement by launching with 50 shows, 38 of which are made locally. They range from live action shows like Fanimals and The Moe Show, to animated cartoons Barefoot Bandits and Darwin and Newts.Mills says Kiwi content has always been created here, but often gets lost across various streaming platforms.Heihei, she says, is the first to bring it all together.Aimed at 5- to 9-year-olds, it's not just a television streaming service, offering games and stories that are often related to other shows on the platform."It's a gateway for parents so they can find other things that are great for kids," she explains. While some international shows are in the mix, like Peppa Pig, Mills says they'll be watching their performance closely to see if they resonate as much as local ones."Do kids fiend off those? Do they need to be part of the mix? We spent a lot of time finding content that wasn't just straight American content. We just want it to feel a bit more high quality," she says.So far, the feedback for Heihei has been positive, and a presentation to 90 content creators last week went well."Producers were saying, 'It feels like we've been given a new lease of life here to make content for kids in the digital age that we haven't been able to do with the constraints of linear TV'," she says. But Mills believes the best is yet to come, with new shows broadening Heihei's offerings commissioned throughout the rest of the year."We don't have a kids news show, what does that look like?" she asks. "I can't wait for it to be out there so we can look at the stats ... and get involved with schools and teachers."There's a vision we can work towards. It feels like this platform gives longevity to kids content now."LISTEN TO CHRIS SCHULZ TALK ABOUT THE STORY WITH ANDREW DICKENS ABOVE

The boys are back. After a few weeks worth of technical issues, we've been able to pull it all together to bring you another head scratching show.Colton Harris-Moore: The "Barefoot Bandit" is on his way east by stolen boat, stolen car or even stolen plane. Is he a self taught, high flyin' criminal or this generations D.B. Cooper?Internet vs. Cable: Do we really need to pay insane prices for 200+ channels of crap when 24 hours of content is uploaded to youtube every minute?Casting a different race for an ethnic character? Othello a Puerto Rican? A Mexican Superman? How about a young, Black Anne Frank? Can we look past someone's skin to see the person being portrayed?MI: Barefoot Bandit; Internet vs. TV; Ethnic roles for any actor?

Who was that masked man? Was it the Barefoot Bandit, the Mummy Bandit, or perhaps the Botox Bandit? Or maybe it was the Bad-Breath Bandit? The hosts discuss the wacky names that law enforcement officers give to suspects. Also, what's a pickle button? Why do we say be there or be square? And what does the word seditty mean in the African-American community?A news story about the Ho-Hum Bandit has Grant musing about the odd names that law enforcement officers give to criminals at large, usually based on their appearance or behavior, like the Barefoot Bandit, the Mummy Bandit. Or how about the Bad Breath Bandit?Where do we get the phrase be there or be square? What's seditty? Many African-Americans use this term, also spelled saddidy, to mean "stuck-up." A caller's heard it all his life, and is curious about the word.Grant has a riddle: "I never was, am always to be, no one ever saw me or ever will, and yet I am the confidence of all to live and breathe on this terrestrial ball. What am I?"Quiz Guy Greg Pliska offers a colorful variation on his ever-popular "Odd Man Out" puzzle. In this series, for example, which one doesn't belong: Imperial, Shasta, Kings, and Orange. A caller from the coastal town of La Jolla, California, is sure he's heard a word for bright pools of silver light that form on the surface of the ocean when sunbeams poke down through cloud cover. Albedo http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/albedo, maybe? Coruscation http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/coruscation? "Ethiopia!"? The hosts clear up the mystery.Martha shares a puzzle sent in by a listener: "What's the longest word typed on the left hand's half of the keyboard?" Hint: It's the plural of a now-outmoded occupational term.A lagniappe is a little something extra that a merchant might toss in for a customer, like a complimentary ball-point pen. What's the origin of that word?Grant argues that new commercial categories of literature, which include poop fiction, chick lit, K-mart realism, and tart noir resemble the kind of fracturing that already occurred in the music world. Here's the blog entry that got him started http://thewritingresource.net/2010/04/06/weekly-vocab-builder-new-lit-types/.What exactly do you mean when you use the words couple, few, and several? Do they conjure specific numbers? The hosts disagree. A retired Air Force officer says he's never wondered until recently why the button that pilots push to drop bombs is called the pickle button, and to "pickle off" the bomb means to drop it.Grant reveals another riddle: It's the beginning of eternity, the end of time and space, the beginning of every end, and the end of every place.
