Host - Denise Gardiner - Health Becomes Fitness Podcast Nicole's Bio- I am the proud owner of Barre Fit Warriors and Coach the Livestream and On-Demand classes. I believe that fitness should be inclusive and accessible to everyone, which is why I want BFW to be the epitome of online fitness that connects people through a shared passion for movement and well-being. At BFW, we have a community to uplift one another. To be our best self and take care of others we also must look after ourselves. Every day I take actions that contribute to my well-being. I breathe and I meditate; for the longest time, I've been starting my day by setting an intention for myself. I also allow myself 30 minutes a day to worry, where I don't do anything else but then it's out of my mind for the rest of the day. I also take the time to be present and play with my dogs at different moments in the day, it makes me happy; I think anything that makes you happy is good for your mental health. I started my fitness career as a professional dancer and had a successful career for over 25 years. I then moved on to get certified as a Yoga Instructor in Hatha, Yin, Restorative & Gravity Yoga. I am also a Certified American Barre Technique Master Instructor/Barre Coach, and a Piloxing SSP/Piloxing Barre Instructor. I strive to keep growing my repertoire of fitness knowledge to offer more diverse classes that target the needs of everyone and are focused on holistic wellness. Healthy is more than a workout, it's a process and one I look forward to guiding you through. Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito, two leading experts in the world of barre fitness, one of THE HOTTEST trends out there right now. “Using your body as a machine” is a quote that sticks out from our chat with Ashley Layne! She identified with movement when she was just two years old! ”Trust the movement” she says often and her love for community and connection propelled her to create her own “Barre” movement in the Hudson Valley in New York! Listen to how bold she has been — in a business that was adversely impacted by COVID, she doubled down to expand! Talk about faith! Ashley Layne is the creator and owner of Barre Body & Soul. A former dancer for 20+ years before turning into a fitness/wellness enthusiast, Ashley has trained with nationally renowned teachers in New York City under Exhale's Barre program with Fred Devito and Elisabeth Halfpapp, as well as completing the 200hr YogaWorks Teacher training. Ashley got more involved in the wellness industry while living in NYC, shifting her focus as a professional dancer to studying Barre Fitness, pilates and yoga. Experiencing the benefits of moving mindfully sparked her inspiration to create a studio where people could move freely, without judgement and still gain physical strength, while de-stressing. As a mother of three and a business owner, her mission is to create a safe space for her community to step back into their bodies and not only workout but also work “in”. In addition to a full schedule of classes, the studio also offers monthly workshops, a unique Wellness & clothing boutique and infrared sauna all under one roof. The positive energy and motivating music brings a unique experience to every class! SHOWNOTES Welcome to this week’s episode where we talk to renowned acupuncturist and chiropractor Dr. Cathleen Gerenger to find out her approach and the tools she uses to become a leading practitioner in health and wellness. Cathleen has developed a wellness routine that she uses every day. Her day starts with a 9 minute meditation, exercising her body and soul before work, going to work in her clinic and cooking nutrient dense food when she comes home in the evening. Cathleen has a kitchen in her clinic where she teaches about nutrition to help with wellness Cathleen combines her Eastern Chinese upbringing and Western background to bring together a holistic approach to health. As a result of an accident she had in college, she was prescribed tablets to help her with headaches and back pain. She had a remarkable interaction with a chiropractor who adjusted and aligned her and found she was pain-free. He also taught her about inflammation and nutrition. This in turn led her into a career into health, wellness and led her to become a chiropractor herself. Cathleen recognises the importance of gut health to regulate and promote better health and how educating kids at a young age to be proactive helps Cathleen’s consults starts with a 30 minute patient questionnaire about all aspects of their health. If anything suspect comes up she recommends certain tests to see if there are any sub-clinical levels. The underlying problems can then be addressed and the body then can therefore begin to heal itself. Cathleen’s definition of happiness is about the little things. Cathleen’s happiness is part of her routine from her morning coffee ritual, her work, and her cooking. Cathleen’s favourite meal is snapper, ginger, garlic and veggies. Cathleen’s favourite book has a personal connection from the author to her sister and how you can voluntarily change someone’s life. Cathleen’s focus in October in November is to focus on brain health Cathleen talks about how testing your pH will give you a useful outlook to your health to ensure it’s 7.5-8.0. Cathleen’s role models include her father and Elon Musk – she talks about how she admires his persistence. Cathleen talks about her setbacks which was the pressure of perfection and how you can feel unbalanced. The importance of embracing vulnerabilities and letting go of any guilt, resentment, anger and learning to let it go as it sits in the liver. Cathleen makes herself laugh and finds joy in the little things. Cathleen encourages everyone to proactively educate themselves and uses social media to give this information on an open forum so click the links to join in and learn more! QUOTES “I love what I do.
