West Coast Swing is more than a dance style — it's a lifestyle for members of West Slope Westies, Durango's nonprofit swing dance community. Known for its fluid, elastic movement and ability to complement almost any genre of music, West Coast Swing has drawn a growing and passionate local following. When the group began outgrowing their rented rooms at the Smiley Building, leadership made a bold decision: find a bigger home and trust the community to fill it. That leap of faith led to the creation of The Durango Collective, a downtown studio that now serves as a shared hub for multiple local dance communities all under one roof. As the group's president describes it, the space was built for people to connect, create and celebrate — and for anyone willing to push through that first moment of vulnerability on the dance floor, joy is waiting on the other side.By Paige SparksThis story is sponsored by Sky Ute Casino Resort and Serious Texas Bar-B-QWatch this story at durangolocal.newsSupport the show

The new dance season is fast approaching in most of North America, and on this week's podcast episode I discuss some things to consider as we head into a new season. Every year, we see an increase in injury rates in the first 6 weeks of a new dance year. This is for a variety of reasons, but some of the most common ones are dancers doing too much too soon, dancers who are coming into the season fatigued and under-recovered from not having a proper off-season, and dancers who are dealing with niggling injuries that haven't been fully dealt with previously. In this episode, we discuss these different scenarios, as well as touch on things we can do to adjust training load to ensure that dancers are gradually progressing into the new season and staying healthy and injury-free.Podcast episodes mention in this episode:Episode 6: Periodization in DanceEpisode 10: Training Load Management for DancersLearn more about Erika Mayall:Follow me on Instagram: @dancephysioerikaLearn more about me on my website: https://www.allegroperformance.comSign up for my newsletter: Click hereSend me an email: hello@allegroperformance.com

Chambers movement based practice are found in collaborative creation, close observation, and the idea of choreography as living archive. She is concerned with a choreography of the everyday; with the unintentional dances, as she describes them “that are already there.” She emerges from the Black American Diaspora, bi-racial and a dual citizen. Her practice extends from this continuum, and its entanglements with western contemporary dance and visual art practices. Her recent choreographic projects include: Zephyrs, Heirloom, And then this also, One hundred more, tailfeather, for all of us, it could have been like this, ten thousand times and one hundred more,  Family Dinner, Family Dinner: The Lexicon, Semi-precious: the faceting of a gemstone only appears complete and critical; Enters and Exits and COPY. When she was 13, she left home to attend Quinte Ballet School of Canada in Belleville, Ontario, where she undertook her professional training for the next five years. Now an independent contemporary dance artist, she has spent the past 20 or so years in Toronto/Tkaronto and so-called Vancouver (on the unceded Indigenous territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations) wearing almost every "hat" a person can wear in the community, (performer, choreographer, administrator, volunteer, producer, presenter, educator, outside eye, probably a couple other things). She works regularly for local artists Company 605, Justine A. Chambers and Tara Cheyenne Performance, amongst others, as well as being in her eighth season as Associate Artistic Director of four-year post-secondary contemporary dance program Modus Operandi, where she has the responsibility and privilege of teaching a small, dedicated, passionate group of younger dance artists.  Kate has taught Yoga and Pilates mat work in the past.    About Tara:   Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, is an award winning creator, performer, choreographer, director, writer, and artistic director of Tara Cheyenne Performance, working across disciplines in film, dance, theatre, and experimental performance. Make Dance Fun
5 Customer-Friendly Tips for Your New Dance Season

Make Dance Fun

In Episode 52, we're sharing 5 fun things we've done this season that have been well received by our customers this season! We created a Calendar Magnet for Performing Company that we handed out during our themed company parent meetings. These are convenient for them to put on their fridge to always have access to the many dates their dancer is committed to throughout the season. We gave it to them during our disco-themed company parent meeting where we also treated them to a coffee bar, goody bags and fun photo ops and prizes for people who dressed up in the theme. Class Hosts - You may have heard us talk about this position we started during covid, but we have learned just how valuable these ladies are, and have hired them again this season. We have 1-2 at each location and they hang out at the front door, and one other area in the studio to help kids and parents navigate the studio, get to their cars, help us craft when we are in crunch time and so much more.New staff photos and headshots, plus new fun headshots for the company dancers. We held a photo shoot that was more fun and on brand for us and the pics look great! And, if you go to our faculty page, it is a fun + fresh update to our old headshots! We also did headshots for all our company dancers during their intensive week and it worked great - they were already scheduled to be here, so it was so much easier to schedule and make happen! These will be going on colorful, fun posters in to hang in the lobby very soon, and we are so excited about having this fresh update for the walls! Monthly Performing Company Update: This is a simple, but colorful and cute, easy to read “newsletter” of sorts. But, it's just the information they need to know with a date or dates attached to it. Dani designs these and she is self-proclaimed to not be a pro in Canva, but she made the template and alters it each month with updated info and sends it out.  We have been creating QR codes for multiple things. For example, we have a QR code for the make-up google form that company members have to fill out when they come in to do a make-up class. Also, if you come in for trial class, there is a QR code that you scan to sign up. On the magnet we did for company, there is a QR code on the magnet that they can use to get to their Company Landing Page - this landing page holds ALL the things they need for company, from their absence tracker and form to their schedules and more!  We hope you find some of these few things we've been doing to also be helpful at your studio!Subscribe & ShareYou are officially invited to subscribe to our podcast, and we would love you to leave us a 5 star rating and review!
