Emphasizing diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Clearfield was the “go to” guy when other physicians, even specialists at NYU and the University of Pennsylvania were baffled, in his adopted hometown of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Dr. Clearfield graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, now Des Moines University, in 1978.  He interned at Metropolitan Hospital in downtown Philadelphia and followed that up with a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Medicine. In 1984 he tested and successfully implemented one of the first individualized computer generated diet programs (on an Apple IIc no less) and instituted the Medifast Protein Sparing Modified Weight Loss program at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital in Kingston, Pa. In 1990, a curious combination of family events, a cousin who, after ten years of fertility issues, became pregnant after three sessions, and a chance encounter with a ninety-year-old practitioner from the Peoples Republic of China, on a trip back home, led him to UCLA's Medical Acupuncture Physicians training. Dr. C. took to acupuncture quickly, becoming the second medical doctor in the Wilkes, Barre-Scranton area to offer acupuncture in his practice. He became. Elected to the board of directors as the education director of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture in 1992, Dr. C began a student with experienced acupuncturists which continue to this day. After election as the Secretary of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture in 1994, Dr. C obtained his most prized academic degree. The secretary of the AAMA signed the diplomas earned in that session. In short, Dr. Clearfield signed his diploma! His 1992 treatise “Celestial Stems-5 Element Diet and Exercise Program,”  based on Traditional Chinese Medicine dietary laws, was well received in the complementary medicine community. In 1994 Dr. Clearfield established the first combined functional and alternative medicine pain clinic at John Heinz Rehabilitation Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He partnered with staff physiatrists, physical therapist, speech pathologist and psychologists to offer a comprehensive pain management program. A 1995 article “Form Follows Function; The Treatment of Musculoskeletal Head and Neck Disease,” is the model used taught today for all shoulder and neck injuries. In 1997 he chaired the 9th Annual Symposium of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture in Washington, D.C. Dr. C was the fourth licensed osteopathic acupuncture physician in the state of Pennsylvania. Moving his practice to Reno in 2013, Dr. William Clearfield and the Clearfield Medical Group has quickly become the source in which patients turn to when looking for alternative and functional medicine.     Personalised Health Optimisation Consulting with Lisa Tamati Lisa offers solution focused coaching sessions to help you find the right answers to your challenges. In episode 5, Ramey starts her six-week Health Strategy program, and she's ready to work on her wellness unlike any health visit she's had before. It starts with the skills to become a systems thinker. This mindset doesn't just expand outside the box. Embracing the best of traditional and nontraditional medical models is both an art and skill you need to navigate today's fragmented healthcare systems. How Did We Get Here?To understand your current state of health, you need to look back in time to the root causes. Roots are easier to find in the earth when you have the right tools to dig for them and know enough about the plant to avoid causing harm. You wouldn't think to treat the leaves to nurture a tree back to health. Why, then, would you just focus on your symptoms? The answer is in the culture we live in. Symptoms matter more than the root causes of illness. The healthcare system in the United States is failing you by remaining stagnant and holding tight to their biomedical model as the dominant narrative – specialist-driven care, mostly time-limited appointments, focusing on the symptoms. This a big reason why you can't afford to fail yourself. Transcending ParadigmsRight now, a lot of healthcare practitioners are siloed in their own specialties, both on the Western and Eastern medicine side. Most don't communicate with each other, and that still leaves you in the passive role. That really didn't sit well with me as a second-generation physician with Board certification in traditional Family Medicine and in Medical Acupuncture. To truly change a system in the most profound way, you must transcend medical systems in order to gain the most from them.Blended medicine is good medicine. And I believe you deserve to have the best that multiple medical systems can offer. The dominant medical system won't serve it to you. You need good strategy to access what you need.Systems Thinking Improves Your Health That's why I created the Health Strategy Consult program. It's almost like a boot camp to be the CEO of your health now and in the future. Join Ramey and me in Episode 5 to start the journey to become a systems thinker. It's never too late to get to a place of knowledge and power for your health. You can have all the best tools, but you need a good strategy to know which tools work best for you. Follow Ramey's Health Journey in Season 3My client, Ramey, reached a point where she wanted to dig deeper to find more health solutions through the Health Strategy Consult program. They discuss chronic illness from his personal eyes in his family which led him to get involved in asking the question WHY are people, especially women, getting so sick? This led to the conversation of something called Estrogen Dominance. In his words, it's the most dangerous disease for women.Estrogen dominance can lead to so many horrible things in women from ovarian cysts fibroids, endometriosis, bad menstrual cycles, and more. It also drives excessive worry, anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia.80% of people that get auto-immune disease are women. And if you get estrogen dominance before menopause, you have a 5.4 times greater risk of getting breast cancer before menopause. And a 10 times greater risk of malignant cancers your entire lifetime--the ones that travel.LISTEN. Patients with skin issues may benefit from a functional medicine approach that considers the connection between gut health and skin issues, like hives, acne, psoriasis, and dermatitis.00:11:45 - Celiac Genetics and Gluten-Free Diets, Celiac genetics are prevalent in people of Irish descent, and eliminating gluten from the diet can alleviate hives and other skin issues. A functional medicine approach can provide a solution for patients who have seen dermatologists without any results.00:13:35 - Good and Bad Bacteria in the Gut, The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem that includes a set of bad bacteria that serve a purpose and keep the system in balance. Opportunistic bacteria can flourish in environments where the diet is not optimal, leading to gut-centric and non-gut-centric issues.00:16:23 - The Gut Microbiome of Indigenous Tribes, Dr. Pedre discusses the gut microbiome of indigenous tribes and how it differs from Westerners. Indigenous tribes consume a high-fiber diet, and their gut microbiome has adapted to digest difficult-to-digest fibers. 00:20:20 - The Importance of Gut Microbiome Adaptation, Dr. Pedre stresses the importance of slowly introducing changes to the gut microbiome. A sudden change can lead to bloating and discomfort. 00:25:05 - The Gut-Airway Connection, Dr. Pedre explains how the gut microbiome is connected to upper respiratory infections. Antibiotics can disrupt the gut microbiome and immune system, leading to recurrent infections. Pregnancy can ramp up the immune system, but can also suppress certain parts to protect the baby.00:29:35 - Lipopolysaccharides and Metabolism, Dr. Pedre explains that Lipopolysaccharides (LPs), also known as endotoxins, are released by gram-negative bacteria and can be absorbed into the body. LPs levels increase after meals high in fat, especially saturated and hydrogenated fats. LPs can affect metabolism and insulin sensitivity.00:33:42 - Microbiome and Leaky Gut, Dr. Pedre explains how an unfavorable microbiome and leaky gut can lead to the absorption of lipopolysaccharides and cause many health issues, such as weight gain, muscle aches, fatigue, and depression. Keeping a food, mood and poop journal can help identify patterns and triggers.00:35:34 - Timeline for Food Sensitivities, Dr. Estima and Dr. Pedre discuss the importance of keeping a food journal to identify patterns of food sensitivities. They explain how sensitivities can have a threshold effect, where one exposure may be fine, but a second exposure can cause symptoms. Other factors such as stress, sleep, and food combinations can also impact sensitivities.00:39:35 - Stress and Gut Health, Dr. Pedre explains how stress can affect the gut microbiome, gut permeability, and vagal tone. High cortisol levels from stress can alter the gut ecosystem, leading to more yeast in the gut and sugar cravings. 00:43:39 - Behavioral Changes Caused by Stress, Dr. Estima and Dr. Pedre discuss how stress can drive behavioral changes such as cravings for sugar and comfort foods. 00:49:39 - The Power of Soil and Dirt, Dr. Pedre emphasizes the importance of soil and dirt for our microbiome. Exposure to organic soil without toxins can magnify our gut microbiome diversity, as seen in the Hadza tribe.00:55:05 - Diversity vs. Eating the Rainbow, Dr. Pedre discusses a Stanford study that compared a high fiber diet to a high fermented foods diet. The high fiber diet did not show a significant increase in microbiome diversity, while the fermented foods diet did. Diversity is the holy grail, but it's not a one-size-fits-all approach.00:59:00 - The Role of Fiber and Fermented Foods, The study found that fermented foods had a significant impact on microbiome diversity and reduced inflammation. While fiber had a smaller impact, it helped to regulate the immune system. 01:03:27 - Gut Disruptors, Dr. Pedre notes that alcohol is a significant gut disruptor. Other factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, and processed foods, can also impact gut health. A personalized approach to healing the gut is necessary, with fermented foods and fiber as cornerstones, but with consideration of individual circumstances.01:06:18 - Dairy and its impact on gut health, Dr. Pedre discusses the impact of dairy on gut health, highlighting that it can cause constipation and trigger food sensitivities due to lactose and dairy protein intolerance. 01:07:35 - Fecal matter transplant, Dr. Estima and Dr. Pedre discuss fecal matter transplant as a possible treatment for gut-related conditions such as Crohn's colitis and ulcerative colitis. While it is not yet approved for many indications, it has shown promise in experimental treatments for food sensitivities and autism in the microbiome community.01:11:06 - Protecting the microbiome, Dr. Estima and Dr. Pedre stress the importance of protecting the microbiome throughout life, from birth to adulthood and into old age. They discuss the negative impacts of persistent antibiotic use and emphasize the need to foster microbial diversity through diet, exposure to nature, and limiting exposure to mass agriculture.01:13:32 - Seeking microbial diversity, Dr. Pedre encourages individuals to seek microbial diversity in their gut by avoiding antibiotics as much as possible, only using them when necessary. He advises fostering microbial diversity through a healthy diet, exposure to nature, and gardening. He notes that microbial diversity is a key factor in the health of centenarians. We'd like to thank our sponsorsAthletic Greens – redeem an exclusive offer hereFourSigmatic Use code DRSTEPHANIE for 10% offOrion Red Light Therapy – Use the code STEPHANIE10 for 10% offSchinouusa – Use code DR.ESTIMA10 for 10% offBIOOPTIMIZERS – receive 10% off your order with Promo Code “ESTIMA”The DNA  Company – $50 discount using code “DRSTEPHANIE” at checkout.HVMN Ketones – get 10% off your order with Promo Code “STEPHANIE”ILIA BeautyLiving Libations – Use code BETTER for 15% offLMNT Electrolytes – A FREE 7-flavor sample pack!PRIMEADINE – get 10% Off your Order with Promo Code “DRSTEPHANIE10”Follow Me On InstagramWatch Better! on YouTubeGet yourself a copy of my best-selling book, The Betty BodyJoin the Hello Betty Community hereSign up for my FREE MASTERCLASS: HEALTHY OFFERS – for health practitioners looking for strategies to earn more moneyAre you A Healthcare Practitioner? Approximately 50 million Americans have autoimmune disease, according to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association. More than 80 different conditions—including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, Graves' disease, and Hashimoto's disease—fall under this umbrella, and some have similar symptoms. While these diseases are generally viewed as separate conditions by specialists who treat the symptoms alone, they share common causes. In many ways, they could be considered one big disease that can involve any body part.My guest today, Dr. David Bilstrom, is an author, international speaker and distinguished member of the American Academy of Integrative Medicine and American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. He is an advanced fellow in anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine. He is affiliated with the first medical center in the country associated with a teaching hospital to treat all types of autoimmune diseases. The center is the first in the nation to utilize nature and its healing properties as a fundamental component of a wellness program. Our conversation started where he started his medical career, as a rehab doc specializing in spinal cord injuries. He was limited in the what he could use to treat these patients because what might work for an able bodied human could kill a paralyzed one. He discovered acupuncture and had great success. His next challenge was his young son's terrible asthma and allergies. This led him to Functional Medicine. An article in The New York Times about the author's struggle with undiagnosable symptoms that got worse and worse until finally she was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition but the only answer was immunosuppressive medication.Again David was called to do something. “This is a story I hear all the time, he said, I can see where we can reverse that already. This has gotta change. we can't have all these women, particularly because 80% of people that get autoimmune disease are women. We can't have this happening.”Well amen to that Dr. Bilstrom! His life since then has been getting the word out about what he's learned and teaching others to work with the information.I asked why more women and he talked about the number of “bad” genes found on the X chromosome and guess what? We get two Xs, guys get on X, one Y. More for us to deal with as usual. There are central mechanisms in the body that keep us healthy when they are in working order. First, gut health, then hormone balance, specifically of estrogen and progesterone. He explained that even after menopause when many women are estrogen poor, we can have dominance if it's not clearing the body.Autoimmune diseases and cancer are said to be two sides of one coin.Blood work will tell you if you are estrogen dominant. I asked him to explain how the immune system is related to the gut.“So any immune system stuff, whether it's the autoimmune disease, allergies, asthma, eczema, which are the overactive immune system issues, or the underactive immune system issues, which are infections, recurrent infections, cancer, and the infections that drive chronic disease, such as Epstein Barr viral virus, herpes virus, six mycoplasma, these kind of guys, whenever you see any other stuff, you go, oh, what's going on with the gut?”Basically, if the gut's off the body can't absorb nutrients properly, can't rid the body of toxins. Cleanses as a remedy? He said if you have leaky gut and you start detoxing protocols your toxins leak into your system and can cause more problems. Best to get the gut healthy first then use your life habits—lots of broccoli

This is Dr. Neal Sivula. I'm a veterinarian and owner of Dancing Paws Animal Wellness Center, a holistic veterinary practice located in beautiful Richfield, Ohio. Today I'll answer the question- "I love acupuncture for myself, can I get it for my pet?" Of course, you can! The basic acupuncture certification program for Veterinarians in the United States is a post-graduate course, usually around 200 hours in length. We learn Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture point locations, case management, and in some courses, students study herbal medicine as well. Some courses only teach TCM, others teach a combination of TCM and Medical Acupuncture, and some teach Medical Acupuncture exclusively. All courses offer a certification examination upon completion of the course and most require internship hours with a certified doctor and the submission of a few case reports to verify that the candidate can think logically through an acupuncture case.  Like our human acupuncture colleagues, the basic training is only the start of our journey in acupuncture. Our certifications require that we participate in approved continuing education courses in acupuncture. These range in topic from refresher courses on basic acupuncture theory all the way to instruction in other techniques like the Balance Method or Scalp Acupuncture, or in other philosophies like Classical Chinese Medicine. Certification is just a jumping off point for every acupuncturist I know, continual education makes us better acupuncturists.  Once trained, veterinarians use acupuncture in all sorts of ways in their practice. I am fortunate in that I am able to limit my practice to holistic medicine, while other doctors may offer acupuncture as something that they provide alongside their allopathic services. So how should one find an acupuncturist for their pet? That can be a little complicated, as we don't have a centralized database for all veterinary acupuncturists. Resources that provide practitioner location services include the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, Chi University, Curacore Academy, the Canine Rehabilitation Institute, and the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies. Of course, doctors that are seeking acupuncture patients will have that service listed on their practice websites as well.  If you're interested in hearing more about holistic veterinary medicine, I host “The Integrative Veterinarian" podcast where I have conversations with veterinarians and discuss their training and their lives as holistic practitioners. Acupuncture is as powerful in our animal friends as it is in humans, so don't forget to consider acupuncture when thinking about your pet's health!  Thanks for listening and be sure to tune in next week for the next Essential Point.  https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA ) Mentioned in this episode: https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA )
