#BeyondtheBurgh is a series of podcast interviews recorded during my recent trip back to Pittsburgh, PA where I served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints more than 15 years ago. The footage of that trip culminated in the documentary film "Back to the 'Burgh" about my experience as a missionary in Pittsburgh. #BeyondtheBurgh is a bonus feature of the film as these interviews did not make the final cut of the film. But they are nevertheless a huge part of my missionary experience and thus a huge part of the untold story. I met Chris and Reita Derrick and their young family when I was serving in Beechview, PA. They had recently joined the Church and loved to have the missionaries over for dinner and for visits. Our conversations and the time we spent with them was so memorable for me that I wanted to try and capture some that energy and the incredible minds of this wonderful couple in a podcast. Hell on Hills, in Beechview is advertised as the world's steepest 5k. After interviewing Bethany Ruhe and Melissa Harmon, two of the race organizers, we can't wait for this to be a yearly event. Beechview, located minutes away from downtown Pittsburgh via the “T,” Pittsburgh's trolley system, is home to a diverse population…and the steepest street in the world. The staggering 37% grade of Canton is just the beginning of a 5k course that climbs four of the biggest hills Pittsburgh has to offer. The inaugural Hell on Hills 5k takes place on October 15, 2016.
