#BeyondtheBurgh is a series of podcast interviews recorded during my recent trip back to Pittsburgh, PA where I served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints more than 15 years ago. The footage of that trip culminated in the documentary film "Back to the 'Burgh" about my experience as a missionary in Pittsburgh. #BeyondtheBurgh is a bonus feature of the film as these interviews did not make the final cut of the film. But they are nevertheless a huge part of my missionary experience and thus a huge part of the untold story. I met Chris and Reita Derrick and their young family when I was serving in Beechview, PA. They had recently joined the Church and loved to have the missionaries over for dinner and for visits. Our conversations and the time we spent with them was so memorable for me that I wanted to try and capture some that energy and the incredible minds of this wonderful couple in a podcast. On October 7, 2017, the Carnegie Library of Beechview will be celebrating 50 years serving the community. Mary Koller chats with us about her love for the libraries and her thoughts on the Beechview branch, how important is reading. Mary discusses how important the library renovation has been for the neighborhood in becoming an even more welcoming environment. Three weeks away from opening night, Creative Director Scott Simmons and Katie “Dudders” traveled to Beechview to Sorgatron Media Studios to record a long distance podcast with Ricky Brigante from Inside the Magic. Buzzy Torek of Epicast joins Katie on the big purple couch this week. Facebook shut down a Snapchat competitor – LifeStage. Netflix has a bit of news this week, like Disney is leaving, for starters. Netflix has also acquired Mark Millar’s publishing house. Comics seem to prefer Netflix to Comedy Central these days. YouTube Red outbid Netflix and Amazon for a Karate Kid comedy series? Pro wrestlers apparently use Sarahah App. Apparently smart cars (the self-driving variety) have issues with altered signs. YouTube has a messaging feature now.
