In this week's episode Mark and Pete from their business and religious perspectives cover six of the most bizarre and fascinating stories making headlines. First up, we dive into the ongoing Birmingham bin dispute, where workers' strikes are causing rubbish to pile up across the city, leaving residents frustrated. Then, we discuss the controversy surrounding Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopics, including casting choices that have raised eyebrows due to a lack of authenticity. Next, we take a close look at President Trump's new tariffs, exploring their impact on global trade, U.S. manufacturing, and consumer prices. Moving on, we tackle a peculiar case where a judge in London called buskers “psychological torture,” sparking a debate about public space and noise pollution. In a more somber moment, we pay tribute to Betty Webb, the WWII codebreaker who recently passed away at 101, remembering her contribution to the war effort. Finally, we end on a royal note: King Charles is asked to play a carrot flute at an environmental event, raising questions about royal symbolism and the weirdness of modern celebrity culture. This week, the Geeks wade into a swamp of tech meltdowns, governmental facepalms, and the usual Elon-flavored absurdity. Kicking things off, protesters take their beef with Tesla to the streets while Proud Boys decide this is the hill to vroom and die on. Meanwhile, Elon's privacy prayers have finally been answered—thanks to new FAA rules, he and Tay-Tay can jet around untracked like it's 1999. Oh, and while Earth dodges a killer asteroid, the Moon might be signing up for an unplanned smackdown. Sorry, Luna.In the news, Signal's reputation as the go-to encrypted app takes a nosedive thanks to Republican Senate drama and an Inspector General with receipts. The NSA warned us. Nobody listened. Now it's “SignalGate” season. Elon continues his narcissist Voltron strategy by having xAI buy X (from Elon). Trump, meanwhile, is moonwalking into a $2.3B Truth Social payday, while his meme coin tanks post-tariff tantrum. OpenAI flexes with new AGI funding and 700M AI-generated images (probably 699M of them cursed), while the first therapy chatbot actually helps someone and a brain-voice interface starts sounding a lot like Skynet: The Prequel. Oh, and in shocking news: Trump's war on “information silos” is code for “your personal data is about to be someone else's business.”Media Candy serves up a grab bag from punk docs (Turn It Around) to jungle pulp throwbacks (Tales of the Gold Monkey), and yes—Stephen Collins is still problematic. Apple's prepping new AI-powered health apps, emoji drops, and a food tab for News+, because why not. WhatsApp now wants to be your phone, Alexa+ disappoints, and Zuckerberg tries to make Facebook usable again with a “Friends-only” feed. Meanwhile, Bill Gates pulls a nostalgia flex by dropping OG Microsoft source code like it's a rare vinyl. In other dark corners: Kermit the Frog is now giving commencement speeches, Val Kilmer sadly exits stage left, and Elon fails in his bid to buy a state supreme court. Hands off, Elon. We all know Mr. Clanton, United States war hero who landed on Omaha Beach during D-Day, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and ultimately helped lead the Allies to victory. Meet Betty Webb, a British Veteran who served in British Military Intelligence and worked at the top secret decoding campus, Bletchley Park.Comprised of 75% women, more than 10,000 members of the intelligence community worked at Bletchley during the height of WWII. Bletchley was the braintrust of Winston Churchill, and the first computer was developed here. The team at Bletchley Park managed to crack the previously unbreakable German Enigma code, which experts believe shortened the duration of the war by 2-4 years. On D-Day specifically, intelligence gathered at Bletchley allowed the Allies to understand the locations of German fighting positions along the French coastline, along with other critical intelligence. Most Americans don't know anything about Bletchley Park. We visited with Betty as she explained what she did here at Bletchley. Simply an amazing women! Please enjoy this conversation between Betty and our group, regarding Bletchley Park, her daily life there, and the famous decoding operation that ultimately shortened the duration of World War II.

It is a true honor to welcome our guest for episode 12, Ms. Betty Webb. Our mission at Walk Among Heroes, is to provide first-hand accounts from various aspects of the largest (and most important) war in the history of our world. This week, Ms. Webb tells us about one of the most secretive aspects of the war, the Government Code & Cypher School’s codebreaking operation at Bletchley Park. Located approximately seventy miles outside of London in Milton Keynes, Bletchley Park was a classified, top secret campus that housed the groundbreaking intelligence operation, codenamed ‘Ultra.’ During the peak of World War II, nearly 10,000 personnel worked at Bletchley Park, with approximately three quarters being women. The codebreaking work at Bletchley Park remained classified until the mid-1970’s, and many historians believe that the work accomplished at Bletchley Park shortened the war by 2-4 years. Think about how many lives were saved by their incredible work!At eighteen, Ms. Webb left college and volunteered for the ATS, Auxiliary Territorial Service, or women’s branch of the British Army. After basic training, she was given a travel warrant with orders to report to Bletchley Station. Between 1941 – 1945, Ms. Webb was stationed at the Government Code & Cypher School’s codebreaking operation at Bletchley Park. She worked initially for Major Ralph Tester in the main mansion before moving to Block F, which focused on paraphrasing deciphered Japanese messages. In 1945, she travelled to the United States to work at the Pentagon to assist in de-coding Japanese intelligence in the Pacific Theater. Ms. Webb actually decoded/translated messages that first revealed the Nazi atrocities conducted at the concentration camps, before anyone in the world knew about them. Today, at age 97, she is one of the few surviving codebreakers of Bletchley Park, and she continues to tell their incredible story. She was featured this past year in National Geographic, and she has also written a book, ‘Secret Postings: Bletchley Park to the Pentagon,’ by Charlotte Webb, which is available at Amazon.com. An amazing woman, we are incredibly honored to meet her. Thank you, Ms. Webb, for choosing to share your story with us.Thank you, Shreyas Ganesh, for volunteering your time as sound engineer. February 2020    In contrast to its roots as a top secret organisation, the name of Bletchley Park is now recognised around the world. Sharing Bletchley Park’s stories with our audiences through education is at the heart what we now do here. Since first opening the site as a museum in 1992, educational programming has been a crucial part of the work of Bletchley Park Trust.    Our Learning team of dedicated staff and volunteers now welcomes over 35,000 visitors to the site each year and reaches even more through their growing Outreach and Digital programmes. Their workshops, tours and events have won awards at the national School Travel Awards and a prestigious Sandford Award in 2019.   A recent project, Challenge HQ, has seen Bletchley Park open brand new learning spaces on site to complement the increasing work done by this busy team. This gives us a perfect opportunity for our listeners to meet the Learning team and find out more about this exciting new project.   For the Bletchley Park Podcast, we brought five local young people, who have taken part in the new project, back to the Park to meet a Veteran of BP’s Japanese Section, Betty Webb.   Image ©Bletchley Park Trust 2020   #BPark, #WW2, #BletchleyPark, #Enigma

Richard Sirgiovanni: Music and cartoons were always forefront for Richard Sirgiovanni. At a very early age Richard saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. The impact was life altering. Richard, was already an avid reader of comics, but now at seven years old began playing drums and drawing. These parallel roads created a self-taught drummer/cartoonist who whilst listening to rock n roll music copied everything he saw from newspaper comic strips to Marvel/DC comic books.Richard's interest in popular music and drawing continued as he was accepted to the prestigious School of Visual Arts in Manhattan where he studied cartooning and storytelling under Harvey Kurtzman (co-founder of Mad Magazine) and Will Eisner, (creator of The Spirit comics). Simultaneously, Richard played drums in an original rock band in New York City. The band was voted one of the top original acts by The Soho News. He crossed paths on the club scene with Madonna, Jon Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Cyndi Lauper and The Stray Cats.Richard continued freelancing in art and music as a cartoonist becoming an award winning Creative Director in the advertising field. Having this deep passion for storytelling and music he thought to create an original idea combing rock n roll and cartoons…. Something magical and fun for kids with a positive message. The Grimps were born.An original animated rock n' roll series for kids presenting original music. It's time for The Grimps.http://thegrimps.comPaul D. Marks:Paul D. Marks is the author of the Shamus Award-winning mystery-thriller White Heat, which Publishers Weekly calls a "taut crime yarn," and its sequel Broken Windows. Betty Webb of Mystery Scene Magazine says, "Broken Windows is extraordinary." Though set in the 1990s, both novels deal with issues that are hot and relevant today: racism and immigration, respectively, in the context of mystery-thrillers. His short stories appear in Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazines, among others, and have won or been nominated for many awards, including the Anthony, Derringer and Macavity.http://pauldmarks.comComplete Radio Promotional Package: The Douglas Coleman Show is now offering a complete radio promotional package for music artists. September 2018 Every year, close to the anniversary of GC&CS staff first arriving at Bletchley Park in 1939 we invite our Veterans and their families back to celebrate their vital war work. It’s our favourite day of the year at the Museum and it allows us to share their amazing stories with our listeners. This year also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Auxiliary Territorial Service or ATS, the woman’s branch of the British Army during World War 2. To celebrate, our Veterans were given a sneak peek at our new ATS pop-up exhibition. In this, the first of two episodes this month, we will take you to this year’s reunion and listen in as Betty Webb and Mary Watkins reminisce about their time in the ATS, the gas masks, the knickers and how it changed both their lives.     Also we hear from Doris Moss, who arrived at Bletchley in 1942 after escaping the German advance in Belgium two years earlier and went on to break both Italian & Japanese codes. Finally actress and drama teacher Elizabeth Davies tells us how she was plucked from Balliol College Oxford to help crack Japanese Naval Codes. March 2017 This month’s It Happened Here story is a truly global one. It’s about what happened when the war was no longer just in Europe. In December 1941, Japan entered World War Two. This meant intelligence gathering and processing became a far bigger and more complex task, which brought about the need for a significant expansion of the top secret operation at Bletchley Park. We'll hear from two of the women who worked on Japanese codes at Bletchley Park, Betty Webb and Mary Every, who had never met until they were interviewed together for a Japanese newspaper. We look back at this seismic change with Bletchley Park's Research Historian, Dr David Kenyon. As well as all that, Podcast Producer, Mark Cotton, was allowed privileged access to the Bletchley Park Archive to look at flash cards used to help hapless Codebreakers learn Japanese in double quick time. Also this month, we bring you a sneak preview of an exciting new exhibition opening soon at Bletchley Park, Off Duty. Although few official records remain of what people did in their spare time, this exhibition will use stories pieced together from letters, diaries and surviving wartime documents from Bletchley Park. Off Duty will feature a number of Veterans’ memories gathered by the Oral History Project, which help us understand what it was like, in their own words. You can find out more at https://www.workingwithbletchleypark.co.uk/ Next we bring you a Q&A session held at the end of our most recent Bletchley Park Presents Event – The Real Women of Bletchley Park. Historian & Bletchley Park guide Bob Horner, put questions from the sell-out audience to four Veterans, Ruth Bourne, Gwendolyn Page, Jean Valentine & Betty Webb. Finally we bring you a truly serendipitous & heart-warming conversation between the Architect who led the restoration of Bletchley Park and the Hut 6 Veteran who inspired her. Architect Janie Price literally bumped into Veteran Jane Fawcett during the recent visit of HRH The Duchess of Cambridge. Jane was Janie’s tutor in building conservation at the Architectural Association and was an expert in historic flooring. * A message from mcfontaine * The sound on The Real Women Package is not up to our usual high quality due to a technical problem that was completely out of our control on the day, but we have improved it as much as possible & felt we should include it because of the importance of the content. We hope it doesn’t spoil your enjoyment.
