“There's three things we have in music: the choir, the rehearsals, and the concerts. We put the people first, not the product. There's a lot of coaches who have this collateral damage thing about winning, and we choral directors have this collateral damage thing about getting a superior rating. It just doesn't work that way. I put the kids first, and it's amazing how my rehearsals changed.”Dr. J. Edmund Hughes [b.1947] retired from the Music Faculty of Chandler-Gilbert Community College in August, 2011 after a teaching career which began in 1971. While at CGCC, he taught choir, music theory, conducting, and organized two on-campus choral festivals per year. From 1990 - 2011, he was the Director of Music at Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa. Prior to his appointment at CGCC, he taught at Tucson High School, California State University-Fresno and Phoenix College. Most recently he was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA), where he directed the Chorale. His choirs have had the distinction of performing at ACDA, NAfME, and Arizona MEA conventions. In April, 2017 he directed “Requiem” by John Rutter, in his Carnegie Hall debut. He has also presented lectures and demonstrations on special interest sessions at ACDA and AMEA conventions. In 2002 he received the Arizona Outstanding Choral Educator Award by ACDA, and in 2005 he was honored as the Arizona Music Educator of the Year by AMEA. He received the first Lifetime Achievement Award granted by the University of Arizona Choral Music Department (December, 2011) and the Lifetime Achievement Award from AMEA (February 2012). Liz's story is one of resilience, rediscovery, and grace—and we're honored to share it with you today. She begins by telling us she was born in Arizona, but her early years were shaped by her father's role as a traveling evangelist. As she grew older, Liz came to see how much of her father's passion for ministry was inspired by the Jesus Revolution. Life on the road wasn't easy. Liz speaks candidly about the challenges of growing up in a family constantly on the move. For a time, they even lived in a bus—a reality that left her feeling embarrassed and isolated, especially at school. Even after the traveling stopped, her family continued to relocate frequently throughout the Valley. They rarely stayed in the same church or school for more than a year, and this instability began to distort Liz's understanding of what community—especially Christian community—could be. Much of the faith she encountered in those years felt lonely, restrictive, and at times, judgmental. Liz found herself longing for independence, counting down the days until she turned 18 so she could create a life of her own. That journey began when she enrolled at Phoenix College, where she met her husband, Buddy. Their early years together were sweet, and before long, they were welcoming a baby boy—and shortly after, a baby girl—into the world. With motherhood came a shift in Liz's heart. She felt a deep desire to raise her children with an understanding of who God is. Though Buddy wasn't actively pursuing faith at the time, he fully supported Liz's efforts to introduce their kids to Jesus. This marked the beginning of a slow but meaningful return to God. As the kids started attending a Christian school, a fellow parent invited Liz to visit Desert Springs. She calls it a “visit” that lasted four years—coming regularly but still holding back. And then, something began to change. Liz started to take real steps into community, into faith, and into relationship with God again. Today, Liz speaks with honesty and humility about her journey—about the ways God has reshaped her heart and mind over time. Her story reminds us that faith is often a winding road, but one full of hope, healing, and transformation. We're so grateful Liz chose to share that road with us.Pastor Steve's January 2025 sermon on deconstructionBuddy's (Liz's husband!) testimony videoWant to share your story on The Stories Collective podcast in 2025? Today is the second episode on our two-part series looking at Black representation on the Phoenix City Council. Morrison F. Warren was the first Black man to ever sit on the Phoenix City Council. But he wasn't a politician. Rather Warren spent his life building bridges through education and advocating for equality. He grew up at a time when Phoenix was segregated. It was something that struck him deeply. He graduated valedictorian of his high school and attended Phoenix College before serving in the Army during World War II. He survived and came back to Phoenix to earn his bachelor's degree from Arizona State University, then called Arizona State College. He was a star player on the football team there and even had a short stint in the NFL. Later, Warren moved on to get his master's and PhD, all in education from ASU. In this episode, we hear from his son, Kevin Warren, and from Morrison Warren himself from an archived interview. The audio of Morrison Warren is provided by the Arizona Historical Society. You can watch the interview with him here. The video was directed and written by Chris Wooley. The director of photography was Wayne Dickmann. THE WINDOW by Christa L. TarpleyIt is about a Frog name Teddy, who lived in a small town and wanted to become king, Teddy did not consider all of the heart-ship and responsibilities that came along with king-ship but only saw one thing and it was becoming king and exercising his authority, he wanted to rule the world and show others what he could do.Teddy assumed that he had many friends; but realized he had only two true friends who were there in good times as well as bad times. After climbing the highest building Teddy found out that trouble was around the corner and needed help and assistance in getting out. Many friends he saw passed by him and at one point they were considered to be his closest friends, they turned and walked away he then understood even in the mist of conflicts there is only those that really care and will be there. So it is in life, you will often wonder who are your friends if I go through trials will they be there for me? If I get in a bind will they come and pull me through? Or just walk away and say sorry I can't help. I believe a true friend will be there until the end, it does not matter what will happen the two of you will walk down the long road together.I am Christa Tarpley born and raised in a town called Axton Virginia, married to Dr. Rev. Jimmy Tarpley and the proud parents of two daughters April and Sol Angelo and a god-daughter Janice. Four years of college; National Business College, Phoenix College all together. My passion is writing, includes poetry, spiritual songs, plays, and children's books. I express feelings in writing and to see the joy upon others faces. I learned that in order to obtain anything one must believe in self and faith to know one day it will happen. I am a waiter, things will not take place over night but preparation, information, putting thoughts together, and meditation must take place.https://www.amazon.com/Window-Christa-L-Tarpley/dp/1954753284/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+windows+christa+tarpley&qid=1615330650&s=books&sr=1-1www.WorkBookPress.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/wbp102821.mp3
