Although Nick is no stranger to injuries as a sports aficionado, we're not entirely sure how we feel about this… While he doesn't spend all day, every day watching these videos, Nick does enjoy having a chuckle or two when scrolling through his social media feeds.

Anchoring his life in faith and serving others reshaped his approach to leadership, family, and business.Key points of his philosophy include:Excellence in Small Things: Success begins with humility and attention to detail. Small tasks build trust and character.Teamwork: Prioritize relationships over self-promotion. Treat every team member with respect and value their input.Teachability: Embrace mentorship and lifelong learning. Chris credits mentors like Dr. Chwen Sheu for shaping his life and career.Servant Leadership: Serve others selflessly to inspire loyalty and empower future leaders.Perseverance: Overcome challenges with resilience, supported by those you've invested in along the way.Chris emphasizes that true leadership is measured by the lives positively impacted. He challenges listeners to prioritize legacy over self-interest, highlighting the exponential influence a leader can have on others and, by extension, society. Grounded in biblical principles, he asserts that fulfillment and success come from putting others first, echoing the teachings of Jesus: “If you want to be first, you must be last and servant of all.

Comment le major Allison Digby Tatham-Warter se distinguait-il sur un champ de bataille ?

Choses à Savoir HISTOIRE

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 11, 2024 1:57

On this week's Hemp Podcast, I recap my recent visit to the Heart of Europe, the Golden City, the City of a Hundred Spires, the capital city of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia — Prague. The occasion for my trip was the European Industrial Hemp Association's 21st annual Conference, this year held in the Czech Republic. I was invited to be part of an American delegation representing the American hemp industry. The trip was funded through a grant from the USDA Market Access Program, or MAPS. The Market Access Program allows the Foreign Agricultural Service, the FAS, to partner with American trade associations, cooperatives, trade groups and small business “to share the costs of overseas marketing and promotional activities that help build commercial export markets for U.S. agricultural products and commodities,” according to the USDA website. The National Industrial Hemp Council was given official cooperator status by the USDA earlier this year, giving it access to MAP funding. At the conference, I witnessed my fellow Americans developing relationships and making business deals, and I saw the purpose of the USDA's Market Access Program playing out in real time. During the conference, I interviewed over 30 hemp people from around the world. On this episode we'll hear what people had to say about hemp in Europe, what the U.S. can learn from the Europeans, what the Europeans can learn from the U.S., and a whole lot more. Before the conference started June 5, Lorenza Romanese, managing director of the European Industrial Hemp Association, was hopeful for a successful event. “I hope that people will engage. I hope that people will go back home knowing more than what they knew when they arrived,” she said. “I hope that they are able to develop business opportunities.” Francesco Mirizzi is senior policy advisor at EIHA and focuses on the fiber and grain sectors. He said the fiber industry is well developed in Europe, thanks in large part to farmers and processors in France. “We kept production in Europe after the Second World War, and we have something like seven or eight big size decortication facilities that allowed us to build a market for fiber,” he said, “mostly dedicated to specific paper application composites, and especially in the automobile industry, and fibers for insulation material in construction and chives (hurd) for construction, like hempcrete.” An epicenter of hemp construction in Europe is war-torn Ukraine, less than 800 miles to the east of Prague. Sergiy Kovalenkov is a Ukranian hemp builder who has been teaching refugees displaced by Russia's war on Ukraine how to rebuild with hemp. “We train the refugees, the people that lost their houses. And they started to build their own homes during the war using local biomass,” he said. “So when you tell me you have problems, trust me, let's go to Ukraine. I'll show you what problems are,” he said. Hana Gabrielová, a recent podcast guest, is from Czech Republic and was instrumental in bringing the conference to her home country. She has worked with hemp for over 20 years and is involved in many ares of hemp in Europe, including as a board member of EIHA as well as a member of the CzecHemp Cluster, an advisory board to help guide and grow the Czech hemp industry domestically and abroad. Gabrielová was very kind to me, pointing me in the right direction on Czech food, restaurants, pilsner, and what I should see while visiting this ancient city. She recommended the svíčková (pronounced sveech-covah), which she described as the national dish consisting of a root vegetable cream sauce and high quality beef sirloin, served with dumplings. It was good. As for what to see in Prague, she said I should see the astronomical clock in Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge over the River Vltava. “They are not far from each other,” she said. “Prague is not too big so you can walk it out and have a nice afternoon and see everything basically,” she said. I took her advice and wandered around the city each day after the conference ended. I cannot express to you how impressive the city was to me, with its ancient streets of cobblestone and castles and medieval fortresses. So much history in one place. But not all ancient history. I was inspired to learn more about the Velvet Revolution that took place in 1989. It started as student protests against the one party rule of the Czechoslovakian Communist Party. Within a week, the crowd grew to over 500,000 people in Wenceslas Square, shaking their house keys, telling the communists to step down and go home. It worked. By the end of the month, the party relinquished control over the people. I think we can all learn lessons from this story. We the people hold the power. Shipping's persistent piracy problem has all but disappeared off the radar of late. Attacks are still happening of course, but according to the International Maritime Bureau's latest annual report maritime piracy and armed robbery attacks have reached their lowest recorded levels in 30 years. Last year there were five attempted hijacks of ships recorded, only two of them were successful and only one of them saw pirates fire weapons. Compare that to the relative recent heyday of the Somali piracy scourge where hijacks attempts were happening daily and in 2011 alone the 237 attacks cost the industry $8.3bn in ransom and insurance costs – it seems the piracy risk has subsided. So, have the pirates hung up their Kalshnikovs for good? Well, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, the epicentre of today's most significant security hotspot, has clearly been on a downward trend in the past few years, but illegal oil bunkering and pipeline vandalism is at an all-time high. And while the hijack business model may have been broken, armed robbery against ships, particularly in domestic waters, is also not going away. So, this week on the podcast we are looking at what the recent lull in piracy activity means for maritime security and whether it really has disappeared. We look at the regulatory crackdowns and also explore whether the current lull in piracy is really just a rebranding statistics and rampant underreporting. Land defenders Eve Saint and Jocey Alec talk Indigenous power in the face of RCMP arrests

Hello and welcome to rabble radio. It's the week of Friday, December 10. I'm your host and the editor of rabble.ca, Chelsea Nash. This week on the podcast, rabble contributor Brent Patterson interviews Wet'suwet'en land defenders Eve Saint and Jocelyn, or Jocey, Alec. Eve and Jocey are sisters who have been arrested and criminalized for defending their sovereign territory in northern British Columbia from a fracked gas pipeline being built on those lands without consent. Eve was arrested by the RCMP on February 7, 2020, at the Gidimt'en checkpoint blockade at the 44-kilometre mark on the Morice River Forest Service Road. There were 60-100 police officers present, including the Emergency Response Team (ERT), dressed in army green and carrying automatic weapons. Before she was arrested, Eve said to them:  “This is Wet'suwet'en territory. We are unarmed. We are peaceful. This is unceded territory. This is the territory of Woos. I am his daughter. You are invaders. You are not allowed here. You are not welcome.” Eve was charged with obstruction of justice and held in custody for four days. More recently, Jocey was arrested by the RCMP on November 19, 2021, while inside a cabin at Coyote camp near the 63-kilometre mark on the road. That cabin was built on the Marten Forest Service Road near Morice River to stop Coastal GasLink from drilling under the river to lay the pipe for its pipeline. Jocey was inside the cabin when the RCMP used an axe and then a chainsaw to tear down its front door as an ERT officer pointed an automatic weapon at those inside. Journalist Michael Toledano filmed this dramatic footage of the assault. Jocey was charged with civil contempt for breaching the terms of an injunction granted to Coastal GasLink not released from custody until November 23. Eve has said: “The post-traumatic stress is real. As Indigenous peoples, we don't like to see these images of our relatives and loved ones being invaded with these colonial forces.” Take a listen to these two powerful women as they discuss their experiences with Brent.  That was rabble contributor Brent Patterson interviewing Wet'suwet'en land defenders Eve Saint and Jocelyn Alec. Now, it's time for the segment we call: IN CASE YOU MISSED IT. This week at rabble, a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives shows just how much higher the risk of contracting COVID-19 is for Indigenous, racialized workers, senior national politics correspondent Karl Nerenberg reports.  The new report does an analysis of jobs that require close physical contact with others and where risk of infection is highest. This includes jobs in health and long-term care, retail and warehousing and food processing. Here, the researchers' findings are striking. They identify not only a race and ethnicity gap, but also a gender gap. Indigenous women had the highest share of employment — over 30 percent — in the occupations that ranked as most dangerous and risky due to the physical proximity to others these roles demand. Next were non-Indigenous women at 28 per cent, followed by Indigenous men at 14.6 per cent. Non-Indigenous men had only a 12.5 per cent share of these dangerous and risky jobs. Racialized workers held well more than half — 57 per cent — of the jobs that included, to some degree, what the CCPA describes as “close proximity” to others. It is interesting to note that white women worked these jobs at almost as high a rate. On the other hand, a third of racialized men and only 28 per cent of white men worked in such high-risk situations. Overall, the CCPA notes that: “the fault lines of the pandemic have been drawn between low-wage and high-wage workers, between women and men, between those who could safely work from home and those who risked infection at work, between Indigenous Peoples and settlers, and between racialized and white Canadians (sic).” The study also noted that From July 2020 to June 2021, 28 per cent of Indigenous and 31 per cent of racialized households lived with economic insecurity. They lacked adequate funds to pay for basic needs such as food, housing and medicines. For white households, the proportion was much smaller: 16 per cent. It's these exact systemic disparities that authors Karen-Marie Elah Perry and Shila Avissa say are being brushed aside in our governments' ongoing pandemic response. Why are we being asked, they wonder, to return back to "normal" or to build "back," when "normal" is what got us here in the first place? Why are we being told that the pandemic is over because businesses have reopened meanwhile new variants are spreading rapidly across the globe, and the majority of the Global South is left without access to vaccinations?  "Whether driven by a focus on the economy above the wellbeing of workers, white supremacy's refusal to acknowledge the pandemic's ongoing impacts on racialized communities, or toxic masculinity's tendency to conceal vulnerability and “push through” the emotional pain of the pandemic, gaslighting is culturally systemic," the authors write.  Also this week:  Writer and land defender Kelly Tatham writes about her decision to divest her personal funds from the Royal Bank of Canada due to its involvement in funding fossil fuel projects like the Coastal Gaslink project currently being pushed without consent through Wet'suwet'en land. There's absolutely no reason to continue letting the big banks use our savings to bulldoze through Indigenous rights and fund the destruction of the planet. Even if there isn't enough money in your account to make a measurable difference in fossil fuel project investments, closing your account sends a message and creates a ripple effect, both inspiring others to do the same and empowering you to take on more tangible actions in your day-to-day life, Tatham writes, as she encourages others to take similar action.  Stephen Wentzell reports that Canada has been failing children living in impoverished conditions across the country for decades. At the current rate, childhood poverty won't be eradicated until the 2070s, according to a recently published report from Campaign 2000. The report concluded Canada has over 1.3 million children living in poverty, making up nearly one in five children. Between 2018 and 2019, just 24,170 children were lifted out of poverty, representing less than one per cent of Canada's impoverished youth. That's it for this week! The Importance of the Youth Vote

THE RUNDOWN Hello and welcome to rabble radio, the proud reemergence of our weekly audio magazine. Rabble radio has its finger on the beat of the issues that matter to you. This week, we're talking about the issues that are conspicuously absent from the federal election thus far. And, we're talking youth voting. After that I'll take you through last week's headlines in a segment called "in case you missed it." But it's been a busy week -- so don't be too hard on yourself. That's what we're here for!  BTW, if you like what you hear, remember we here at rabble.ca cover and produce a lot more timely news, commentary and even events online. You can find it all at rabble.ca. STUDENT VOTING Our national politics reporter Stephen Wentzell joins us to talk about his story about how students feel their vote isn't valued. You can keep up with his reporting on the site, and be sure to sign up for our weekly newsletter so you never miss a beat. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Here are some stories you might have missed on rabble.ca this week. Joyce Nelson breaks down why we should be paying more attention to military spending this election. The federal government is set to award a $5-million contract for drone procurement this fall, in addition to the upfront cost of $19 million for the 88 new fighter jets it is proceeding with purchasing (the No New Fighter Jets Coalition pegs the full life-cycle cost of these jets at $77 million.) All this spending–in addition to a recent joint statement from Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan and his American counterpart -- could signal that Canada is planning to participate in the U.S. ballistic missile shield -- the purpose of which is to create a North American shield to enable to U.S. to wage a "winnable" nuclear war. And, Rachel Snow laments that this federal election -- much like the 43 before it -- will not advance the interests of the First Nations peoples. Instead, the Canadian electorate is focused on "first-world problems," she writes. "We live within a shadow world of structural and economic apartheid that is so ingrained that many no longer question it," Snow notes of the living conditions of many First Nations. Snow observes that talk about reconciliation during this election is all about platitudes, politics, and public perception. Take the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, for instance, the first observance of which will take place on September 30. Rather than make reparations with Indigenous folks or address systemic challenges like clean water supply and living conditions on reserves, Trudeau "stepped out in front of the parade" and created a symbol. "The catastrophic state of Indigenous communities sits in the balance as Canadians ponder which party has the more progressive policies for some future, amorphous 'reconciliation,'" she writes. Plus, Aidan Simardone writes much of the same but about the Liberals' approach to Islamophobia. The Liberals' modus operandi towards Muslims is centred around "fairness," he writes. "It means opposing direct discrimination–hate crimes, slurs and exclusion from the halls of power. Rather than being systemic, it suggests that discrimination is the fault of individuals." The solution to Islamophobia (and to reconciliation) is not found in supplying each group with equal opportunity under capitalism; rather, more radical options are necessary, he writes. Also this week, Kelly Tatham reports from the blockades of Fairy Creek where she is participating in the resistance to and protest of the logging industry cutting back the old-growth forests. Amid increasing police raids, and after witnessing police violence directed to the Black and Indigenous forest defenders, Tatham questions whether any of it is really about the trees anymore–has it ever been? Read her piece to learn about the human cost of Fairy Creek. And, senior politics reporter Karl Nerenberg brings you up to speed on the first parallel look at the five major party leaders' TV performance after Radio-Canada hosted the first such event earlier this week. Jagmeet Singh was surprisingly on top of his game, Nerenberg noted, seeming to give on-top answers in good–if not perfect -- French, and overall giving off an air of amiability. The question remains if he -- as the only party leader who wears a turban -- will be able to overcome the xenophobia he faces in that province. Check out the rest of Nerenberg's analysis at rabble.ca. Candidates to watch This week, national politics reporter Stephen Wentzell profiled Vancouver Centre candidate Breen Ouellette. Ouellette, in his second election campaign against long-time incumbent, Liberal Hedy Fry. In 2019, Ouellette managed to come second, nabbing 23.7 per cent of the vote. His career in politics has not been without its challenges, though: Ouellette told Wentzell he has been subjected to repeated violent threats from anti-maskers while out on the campaign trail. Another candidate to watch this week: Libby Davies profiled Kamloops–Thompson -- Cariboo candidate Bill Sundhu, who sees a realistic path to victory in the BC interior. Conservative Cathy Macleod is not running for reelection there, and Sundhu feels there is Conservative fatigue among voters, giving the NDP a shot at taking that seat. Sundhu -- driven by social justice and informed by his own life experiences with racism, disability services, and much else -- wants the people of his riding to know they should expect more from their Member of Parliament. In cahoots Six human rights and environmental groups are requesting precautionary measures for activists opposed to the Escobal mine in Guatemala, according to Mining Watch Canada. We can't forget: this weekend is Labour Day! UFCW Canada wants to remind you that as we recover from COVID-19, we must ensure that we do not return to the status quo. Worker's rights are a big part of that, as we've seen from this pandemic. Now for our top five headlines, all of which you can find at rabble.ca. 1.    Stephen Wentzell: Student voters decry suspension of Vote on Campus program 2.    Bruce Campbell: Climate crisis cannot be separated from extreme wealth inequality 3.    David Climenhaga: No media welcome: Jason Kenney reappears to answer curated questions on Facebook Live 4.    Yves Engler: Afghanistan and the failure of Canadian 'aid' 5.    David Suzuki: IPCC report could be a legal game-changer for climate THE MUSICAL QUESTION Oh, and the music for this podcast? It's the jazz stylings of our political boffin, Karl Nerenberg.  END NOTES Stay tuned for more of our special election next week. If you like the show please consider subscribing wherever you listen to your podcasts. Rate, review, send it to a friend – you know the drill. Follow us on social media, @rabbleca on both Instagram and Twitter. Got feedback on the show? I'd love to hear from you. Get in touch anytime at editor@rabble.ca. This week podcast hosted by Sean Price is with Alex Tatham, Managing Director at Westcoast Limited. “Be the leader you would want to follow” Today we hear about the Alex's journey and how it lead him to be the Managing Director at the UK largest IT company Westcoast Limited. Starting off working his way up to a senior management level in accountancy at Ernst & Young. The main objective that was given to Alex at Westcoast, was to grow the business to £4 billion pound, starting at £600 million. Such an extraordinary task required tremendous amounts of effort, wisdom and determination. In the episode you will hear exactly how he took on that challenge and how he and the staff at Westcoast have been operating to achieve it. (There has roughly been an 800% grown over the 12 years Alex Tatham has been Managing Director!). “what are your opinions on a 4 day working week… well I want a 6 day week!” Alex mentions one of his regrets is not getting into sales sooner, since he was in accountancy before. Whilst he admits his days at Ernest and Young were great Alex reveals his true career path in life was always working in sales. Sean and Alex also discuss the current affairs surrounding Covid-19 and “Freedom Day”, now everybody is faced with something new to fear, being “pinged” by NHS Track and Trace. We also speak on the inequalities there are within the IT service industry and how Westcoast Limited are removing those stigmas and changing the norms in the industry, especially in regard to the woman- man ratio within the “The Channel”. From servicing 5 machines a day to 5,000. We take a look at Westcoasts exponential growth and how being a privately owned business with good finance has helped expand the business massively. In today's episode we see find out about Alex's views on working from home, hearing that he would rather people be in office to create the energy for high levels of productivity as well as interacting and enjoying speaking to staff. Mentioning bell ringing after any big success has been temporarily stopped because of Covid-19. Alex goes on to give us an inside view on what life is like at Westcoast, discovering there isn't a “open door policy” because there aren't any doors or secluded offices where senior staff work, all the sales team including Alex and Joe sit at their desks in the office with everyone else. Giving employees the opportunity to ask questions and seek support. (Fun Fact Alex and his wife Sue, are the first ever married couple to come out of the show “Blind Dates”!)
