Episode 16 - Murdock and Marvel: 1978 This week Marvel starts to steady the ship, even as the Distinguished Competition is kneecapped by their corporate overlords.  Prices go up!  Prices go down!  Great new companies sprout up!  Established companies die!  And as usual there are predictions about the impending death of comics.  Welcome to 1978, everyone.  Preshow Listener Mail from Zach Duane at Fan Fusion (https://www.phoenixfanfusion.com/) The Year in Comics  Notable and Newsworthy Dr. Strange TV Movie: https://archive.org/details/dr.-strange-1978-movie Industry Trends Eagle Awards The Year in Marvel Chaos continues and a big name leaves...again. Meanwhile, another of New York's elite that was manipulated by Killgrave hires the Paladin to hunt down Killgrave as well. Eventually Daredevil and Paladin meet, briefly fight and part ways.   After a bad dream, Murdock decides to come clean to Heather Glenn about his Daredevil secret and tell her that Maxwell Glenn is innocent and he's working to find the person responsible. While waiting for Heather to come home, he answers her phone and learns Maxwell Glenn has committed suicide in prison. When she arrives, he still comes clean and Heather blames Daredevil/Matt for everything including Maxwell Glenn's death. She then disappears.  In the Marvel Two-In-One, Matt Murdock is called on to represent Ben Grimm as he's trial for causing too much damage in New York but leads to Daredevil briefly working for the Mad Thinker whom is out to get Grimm. However, with the Help of Vision and Yellowjacket, they are able to take down the villain.  Knowing he can't fix his relationship with Heather, Daredevil orchestrates an intervention/meet-up between Debbie Harris and Foggy Nelson in Central Park – which leads to them deciding they are going to get married again. While in Central Park, Daredevil has another run-in with the Paladin.  Next Daredevil is lured into a trap with Heather Glenn as the bait by Mister Hyde and Cobra. After a lengthy battle that includes the Billy Club being destroyed (again) and Hyde and Daredevil falling from the 12th floor of Glenn's apartment complex, Daredevil is captured.  That leads to an epic final show-down in which Daredevil must take on the Jester, Gladiator, Hyde, Cobra (and briefly Paladin) who are under the influence of Killgrave. This will be our spotlight story for the week.  The year ends with Daredevil experiencing mysterious headaches which is causing him trouble with his radar sense. We also learn Death-Stalker is working on a plan to get Daredevil.  At the Storefront, Murdock interviews and hires a new assistant. During the walk to dinner, Murdock learns Black Widow is in town with the Avengers so he bails on Becky Blake and Foggy. As Daredevil, he invades Avengers mansion taking down Beast and Captain America and calls out Black Widow saying “She'll pay dearly”  New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #154 September 1978 "Arena" Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway The Strange Case of Jack Kirby Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details.    The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.  Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics.  This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377.  My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss.  This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage.  BOOKLIST  The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show.  Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it!  Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo.  Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon.  London: Titan Books, 2020.  This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print.  It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! Episode 12 - Murdock and Marvel: 1974 Well, here we are in 1974, when Richard Nixon leaves the White House in shame in real life even as he is shown to be leading a secret criminal organization in the Marvel universe.  The economy is a mess, crime is up, and comics are affected in all sorts of ways. Gene Colan returned to go art on #112 and #116.  Captain Marvel comes to the aid of Daredevil and Black Widow in their attempt to take down Kerwin Broderick and his Terrex. But it is Moon Dragon amplifying Angar's powers that trap the Terrex in a black void where it is killed along with Broderick. During all this we learn that Captain O'Hara's brother has died in Africa  Next Daredevil takes on the Beetle while Moon Dragon hangs out at the Daredevil/Black Widow Mansion. Daredevil then heads back to New York after hearing about an assassination attempt on Foggy Nelson. We also learn Foggy has a sister named Candice.  We learn the Beetle was hired by the Black Spectre criminal organization who are looking to overthrow the US government and attempt to forcefully recruit Daredevil and Black Widow to their cause. In the 2-in-1, Daredevil and Thing board the Black Spectre Zeppelin in an attempt to confront their leader, but it doesn't go well and they have to flee. Daredevil is finally able to unmask the Black Spectre leader and it's an apish mutant known as the Mandrill. Shanna and Daredevil are captured by another hired villain, Silver Samurai, and brought back to the Zepplin where they find Black Widow has also been kidnapped and is being mind controlled.  The final showdown with Mandrill and Black Spectre comes in Washington D.C. at the White House after Daredevil is able to snap Black Widow from her mind control. Black Widow and Shanna are able to defeat Nekra when she's distracted by the explosion and Daredevil defeats Mandrill on the white house roof after he falls – but no body of the mutant is found.  Next Matt Murdock/Daredevil go to Florida in search of Gladiator and Candice Nelson – whom he kidnapped. The trail takes him to the Everglades where he finds Candice but also Death Stalker – whom hired Gladiator to get the project notes. Death Stalker captures Daredevil but the Man-Thing intervenes which ultimately saves Daredevil from the Gladiator.   Death Stalker heads to New York and tries to lure Murdock/Daredevil into a trap with the help of Foggy Nelson, but it doesn't go as planned and Death Stalker escapes. Foggy and Matt hide Candice at Matt's hotel. A final confrontation takes place in a chemical plant with Daredevil using his Billy Club to know Death Stalker into a vat of acid (along with the project notes).     The year ends with Daredevil returning to San Francisco to help Black Widow and her financial woes, but the pair are attacked and defeated by the Owl. He loads the unconscious heroes on his chopper so he can deal with them as he sees fit.  New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #112 August 1974 “Death of a Nation?”  Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Crediting Creators in the collaborative and evolving world of corporate comics https://www.newsfromme.com/2024/04/08/claws-for-debate-part-1/ Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Whether its the comics or the TV show, the world of Daredevil wouldn't b be the same without Gladiator -- but his earliest appearances do Melvin Potter no justice, as he struggles to find his character. The earliest years of Daredevil feature so much testing-new-ideas, The Hornhead faces some forgettable foes like The Tri-Man and the Masked Marauder as well. But it's cool because Gladiator is so hot it really doesn't matter. Then – Daredevil spends much of the 1960s searching for an identity. Ka-Zar's jungle vibes and his weird crime-boy brother do not help this journey, but it's still a fun romp. Plus holy &$*& 1960s letters pages were savage! (Beware of  Pat, Matt!!) Next – The holidays are a time for family! This Thanksgiving weekend installment sees the return of Producer Kevo, so our Billy Club family can discuss exactly that: family, and its significance to one recently-gilded hornhead. Daredevil's surprising (and significant!) appearance in She-Hulk's finale has significantly amped up our excitement for Charlie's and Matt's futures with the MCU, and our team has gathered to praise the former's hard work and look forward to what the latter has in store. Last – It's that time of year where everyone starts posting their holiday and end of year best episodes -- and The Billy Club is swinging in with a special look at one of the team's all time favorite issues! Mark Waid's Daredevil v3 #7 contains so many of the character's best features, conventions, and storytelling highlights, including the much famed "I Am Not Daredevil" shirt. Join Nico, Tori, & Producer Kevo as the three of them celebrate everything that makes Daredevil so holly, jolly, and deadly all year round! When Marvel fans think of classic friendships, Daredevil and Spider-Man often comes to mind first. While many of the earliest stories lack the exact magic that later tales would contain, this early story is filled with memorable moments and a battle with the Masked Marauder. But really, it's about the power of community the two characters manage to share despite their as-of-yet-unknown secret identities hanging overhead! Then – It takes the title a while to find its groove and its recurring character line-up, but Daredevil: The Man Without Fear is on its way. A two-part arc with Gladiator and the Masked Marauder sees Nico, Tori, and occasional spots from Kevo examine how much Gladiator has transformed over the last few years! Last – The Owl is one of the villains most synonymous with Daredevil's wild rogues gallery -- but he was not always the same sort of scary/silly he is today -- he started a lot sillier. A lot. Join Nico, Tori, and producer Kevo as the three of them take a look at the very odd, error-filled, and disjointed return of The Owl! The Ox was not the most memorable villain Daredevil had in the earliest issues o the title, but Ox's second appearance, while rote with tropes that were common to the era, manages to finally reclaim the energy that once belonged to the title. The transition of artists, writers, and genre left Daredevil languishing, like the wrong mind in the wrong body – which is exactly what Daredevil #15 delivers! Then – The Billy Club is back with an all-new news special! Daredevil Omnibus volume 2 was announced leading Nico & Tori to a deeeeep rabbit hole looking at literally every Marvel Omnibus edition to contain Daredevil or Elektra content! They look at the proper runs (the Classic 60s, Miller, Bendis, Waid, & more) plus crossover collections (like Shadowland and the X-Men collections), as well as what's still missing (like the Ann Nocenti run)! Next – The D23 Expo may as well been named Daredevil 23 Expo with the amazing news they provided to The Billy Club team! The incredible event gave new clips from She-Hulk featuring Daredevil, Echo news, a new Born Again logo, and more beyond just the new Disney+ show! There's news of Daredevil headed to the theme parks and even a Mickey Mouse and BEARDEVIL mashup!? Last – The hotly-anticipated appearance of Matt Murdock (aka I Am Not Daredevil) has finally arrived! On this installment of The Billy Club, Nico and Tori are joined by Producer Kevo as they discuss the hornhead's triumphant return to superheroics with his first full appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Does the devil live up to the hype? Hell yes!! The She-Hulk series perfectly nails the character of Matt Murdock that we knew and loved from the Netflix series while continuing to expand the character, making these fans even more excited for what's to come. As Daredevil continues to struggle to develop its voice as a title, the characters continue to evolve and transform into the heroes we know them as today. In Daredevil #9, Matt gets his first “you-may-get-your-sight-back” story as well as the first DD villain who never shows up again – in fact, never even sees mention again. Klaus Kreuger acts as a rough Doctor Doom stand-in, and finds himself slipped into Matt & Foggy's past, and then just as easily slips right back out again. But of course, regardless of anything else, Matt's struggles against ableism are far from over. Next – Daredevil continues to transform as a title before The Billy Club's eyes! Join Nico and Tori as they take a look at Wally Wood's Daredevil script, a story taking DD from his previous element to the next stage of his storytelling – a crime/superhero hybrid! The Organizer recruits The Organization (convenient!) featuring Cat-Man, Frog-Man, Bird-Man, & Ape-Man to cause a crimewave as Foggy Nelson becomes a political figure. In some ways, these are the base elements of what will become Daredevil's building blocks going forward, but at the same time, this silly story never moves to where it needs to to sustain the Crimson Crusader and his place in the Marvel Universe! Then – Well, we knew this was coming. In an effort to create more Daredevil, Daredevil stops being Daredevil, exactly. Daredevil makes the switch to monthly and in, to accommodate additional issues, a three-part story about Ka-Zar completely replaces the title. It's a weird choice. Ka-Zar, while a staple of the Marvel Universe, is not a great fit for Daredevil and the weird dynamic created by forcing Daredevil into a story in his own title meant to facilitate crafting a bigger picture for the burgeoning comic line, Daredevil truly begins to get lost in the lack of an identity presented by being not-quite-Spider-Man-for-adults. Last – It's been an exciting weekend for Daredevil fans!! Your Billy Club hosts Nico & Tori couldn't be more thrilled about all of the amazing news that came from San Diego ComicCon this year, so we've put together a little reaction special just to talk about it! Don't worry, they'll be back with their usual DD deep dives on our next installment. Until then, stay fearless! Few Marvel heroes stretch back as far as Namor: The Sub-Mariner does through canon, and a year into Daredevil's run, the two characters come against one another! In Daredevil #7, Namor WIPES THE FLOOR with Daredevil, kicking his ass in the air, on land, and underwater. But despite this power imbalance, Namor sees the worth in Daredevil and treats him with dignity, only leaving him in defeat, instead of destroyed. Then – Marvel's first family made contact with Daredevil back in DD #2, our second episode. Once again, the FF & DD find themselves teaming up, and this time MM, RR, SS, & Co are facing off against D(r)D for the BB. Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Matt Murdock, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Doctor Doom, and Baxter Building, respectively. The story here focuses far more on the FF with DD in more of a support role, which suits him just fine. Stepping in, and once again hopelessly outmatched, against Doctor Doom while a powerless Fantastic Four flounder, Daredevil gives a solid 20 pages in this two part Billy Club Bonus appearance! Last – Daredevil's rogues gallery is known for a number of incredible, threatening villains, representing menaces of all kinds. Whether it's Kingpin, Bullseye, or yes, even The Beast of The Hand, the villains of Daredevil cover the peak-human, the not-so-human, and the all-powerful. However, none of those guys show up until later. And for every early Purple Man and The Owl, there's Stiltman, the most under-appreciated Daredevil villain of them all. In a story full of twists and turns and a pivoting point for the awkward trio-romance, more than just the Stiltman comeths. Cometh? Comeths. Sure. One of the most famous friendships in all of comics, Spider-Man and Daredevil have their first team-up in their long careers in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #16. Their brotherhood is first defined here, where Matt and Peter meet and face off against the Ringmaster, an odd turn considering last issue of DD, DD faced off against another mind-controller. Nico and Tori fall for DD and Spidey falling for each other. Also, Daredevil's head appears twice in Amazing Spider-Man #18. So that comes up. Then – Early Daredevil is punctuated by unusual, and sometimes forgettable villains – Matador falls somewhere between. In an issue filled with strange appropriation, advances for the romance subplot, and more “is Daredevil a coward” nonsense, Daredevil #5 is a pinnacle 60s issue of the hornhead's adventures. There's crazy costumes, wild backstories, and more as Nico and Tori continue to understand the world of Murdock and Nelson and navigate their adventures in The Billy Club. Last – Daredevil enters his biggest adventure so far as Nico and Tori follow Daredevil into his first multi-villain challenge. Mr Fear calls together the Fellowship of Fear to take on the Man Without Fear, enlisting the help of Ox and Eel. The Yellow Suit makes its final original run appearance which leads the Billy Clubbers to consider the entirety of the Yellow Suit era and the changes the Red Suit bring to the title. The Angry World of the Great Reset. Comedian Russell Brand brilliantly slams Klaus Schwab and the villainous WEF. Penetrating Cabinets. Running farmers off their ancestral lands. Climate Change as Billy Club for the Global Elites. Why is the UN now partnering with the WEF? Who elected any of these people? Meanwhile, Noam Chomsky laments the "totalitarian culture" of the United States, which he says is now worse than "the Soviet Union before Gorbachev." Darren Beattie describes the warped "national security state" agenda behind the January 6th Propaganda Commission. Weaponizing against the American People. CIA James Woolsey jokes with Laura Ingraham about the CIA meddling "in other countries elections." Pretty funny? Plus, our study of Leftist "name-calling" of their political opponents. From Clarence Thomas to Mayra Flores. Not very nice! Biden falls to subterranean 18% approvals with Hispanics. According to Gallup, trust in media reaches yet another all-time low. But should be still lower. With Listener Calls.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! Hey, who's that on the podcast?  Heather!  She's back for this one as she gets closer and closer to getting off the ship! Ken has a story for her to read by a new author, Richard Le Gallienne, called "The Haunted Orchard". It is, unsurprisingly, a little haunting story about a ghost.  In an orchard.  But despite being a little on the nose, it's beautiful story with some incredible imagery. Ken and Heather catch us up on Heather's recent adventures, then they get into the story discuss some bizarre side topics like Shakespeare's little Willy, furniture made by exotic dancers, and mormons at a beach bar. Oh, and they don't have internet access, so you're going to have to look up words yourself. "The Haunted Orchard" was published in Harper's Magazine, January, 1912. Email us at 5050artsproduction@gmail.com. Remember to tell five friends to check out Campfire Classics. Like, subscribe, leave a review. Now sit back, light a fire (or even a candle), grab a drink, and enjoy.

Many people, if they were honest, would admit to being confused by the Bible--but not only confused, discouraged. It shouldn't be this way. The Bible is the testimony about Jesus Christ, who came to save sinners like us. In it, we should see our only true and lasting hope. How should we approach the Bible in order to better understand it in light of Christ? What are things we need to know so that the Bible becomes a balm for our souls, rather than a billy club? Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin talk about the priesthood of the believer and how it has been misunderstood and misapplied. This week on Roberta’s Radio, the bars that make up this community official boycott the puke-filled pub crawl. Hear from Pearl’s Social & Billy Club, Three Diamond Door, Roberta’s, King’s County and Montana’s Trailhouse as they make it clear that SantaCon participants will not be welcome in Bushwick. Also hear from an anonymous “former Santa” who helped organize the event in its formative years as she explains why all of the good intentions behind the convention (anti-consumerism) have been overtaken by the new suburban wave of participants (drunken assholes). This program was brought to you by Heritage Foods USA.

This week we are back to reviewing movies and we grabbed Insidious from my collection here at the house. We find out the few things in this movie that can piss of Taylor (there doesn't seem to be much), our inability to remember any facts twenty seconds after we watch the movie, and the fact that Taylor wasted an entire picture of iced coffee. And we can't forget what the hell is the team drinking this week. At the very end of the show we try something new, we talk about movie trailers and our reactions to them. We have Billy Club, Animal, Leprechaun: Origins, The Purge: Anarchy and The Human Race.Oh!
