Our guest this week is Ben Rose, a longtime creative force in the Indianapolis arts community who recently was named the inaugural artistic director of the fledgling Indianapolis Black Theatre Co. If you want to think about it as a startup, the theater has a long runway thanks to a campaign that raised $1.5 million dollars. Part of Rose's job as artistic director will be to establish revenue streams that can maintain momentum once that first round of funding runs out Rose has several outside-the-box ideas for supporting the company while serving the careers of company members both on and off stage. They're influenced in part by a varied career that took him to Atlanta and Los Angeles for significant periods of time, as well as his professional experience in several artistic modes, including stage acting, writing, videography, filmmaking and photography. And he has learned to see the world through several lenses due to his unusual upbringing as a mixed-race child from Indianapolis who was adopted by a white family at a very early age and grew up in relatively rural Tipton. In this week's episode of the podcast, Rose discusses how he forged a career in the arts through what he calls fortunate, back-door opportunities and developed his vision for how Indianapolis Black Theatre Company can sustain itself while helping its members find work in other venues. He also delves into the group's first official production which has something to say about taking professional risks in places where you might not have felt welcome in the past. It's a staged reading of a play about a groundbreaking black woman who became the first professional female baseball player as a member of the Indianapolis Clowns in the previously all-male Negro Leagues. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

Born Cory DeWayne Robinson January 23 1975, This self produced arsenal of talent has been compared to the stylings of great artists' like Usher, Donell Jones, Ginuwine, Sam Cooke, Terence Trent Darby and Musiq Soul child just to name a few. By the pairing up of urban beats, clever arrangements and smooth but sometimes raspy soulful lyrics, Cory comes with the type of sound that one can only call nothing but absolute genius. Cory first set off to join the ranks of some of the industries tightest urban R&B artist, He was scouted and signed to the Hawaiian based Record label “Homeless Records” from which brought him notable exposure and a number of head nods from labels such as "LaFace Records". With the album “Tell me” Robinson was seen in various performances including his first national televised competition where he was challenged by American Pop and R&B singer songwriter “Neyo” on MTV's prelude to American Idol called the “The Cut” (then hosted by TLC's Lisa "Left eye" Lopez), while also been chosen to open for artist such as Brian McKnight. Cory's first independent project "The Lady disk" gave us just a taste of the vibe Cory Robinson could bring to the industry. With its cool and sometimes seductive way of story telling, the lyrics seem to jump out of the speakers and into your imagination.

Welcome to the second part of one of the most important discussions I've had on the podcast: bringing the experiences and personal stories of Black actors to the discussion table. In this second part, we cover the hard-hitting topics of accessibility and inclusivity in the theater industry. Actors Devin Holloway (AIN'T TOO PROUD), Martina Sykes (THE LION KING), and Christian Thompson (WICKED) all share their stories of being a Black actor in an industry that can be welcoming at times, but also confines actors to certain stereotypes and becomes exclusive to only a few. The trio also shares ways that audience members can give back and support Black theater in their communities. (Note: The views expressed in this episode are solely those of the guests, and may not represent all the views of all the cast/creatives of their respective productions.)
Now, more than ever, Black artists and actors need to be given the credit where and when it's due. The theater industry has come a long way in terms of creating an inclusive environment for all, but there's still plenty of room for improvement. As it is Black History Month, I wanted to bring the thoughts and ideas of extremely talented Black actors to the table and discuss what their experiences have been like thus far. Devin Holloway is currently playing “Richard Street” in the national tour of AIN'T TOO PROUD, Martina Sykes is currently on the road with THE LION KING as “Shenzi”, and Christian Thompson is fresh off the road from WICKED, having made history as one of the very few principal Black actors to have played “Fiyero” in the show's 20-year history. Black actors and artists bring important experiences to the table, as you'll hear in the first part of this two-part special! (NOTE: The views expressed in this episode are solely those of the guests, and may not represent the views of all the cast/creatives of their respective productions.)
In this episode of The Truth in This Art podcast, host Rob Lee interviews Dr. Drew Lichtenberg and LeeAnet Noble, two esteemed professionals from the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.
