Bishop G. E. Patterson, the presiding bishop of the Church of God in Christ, the nation's largest African-American Pentecostal denomination, died Tuesday in Memphis. He was 67 and lived in Memphis, where the church has its headquarters.  The cause was heart failure, his nephew Milton T. Hawkins said. A son of a bishop of the Church of God in Christ, Bishop Patterson was elected leader of the denomination in 2000. Known for his vivid sermons, Bishop Patterson spread the Pentecostal word through regular Sunday services broadcast on the Word Network, the Trinity Broadcasting Network and Black Entertainment

Story by: Gail NoblesBackground music by: PixabayToday I want to talk about the Encore Gospel Magazine that was launched in 2005 as a digital magazine and a division of Total Prayze Entertainment Group. Encore has since expanded into a leading multimedia brand consisting of a magazine, a music television production studio, Encore Entertainment, an online music video platform: A podcast network and more. The magazine features cover stories like Jekalyn Carr.It's good to have gospel magazines. I don't remember any black gospel music magazines in the 80's and 90's on the shelf at the bookstore. It was always the Ebony, Jet, and RightOn magazines that were so popular about black entertainment. There may have been some black gospel music magazines around during that time, but I just didn't see them. It seemed as if the Rock n Roll entertainers were the ones that stood out on the bookshelfs and television the most. It seemed like they were the ones getting the publicity constantly. I mostly heard about gospel singers mostly through radio on Sunday mornings on a show called Inspirations Across America. There was a program on Black Entertainment Television hosted by Dr. Bobby Jones (Bobby Jones Gospel). The series premiered on Sunday, January 27, 1980, two days after the network's January 25 launch. I didn't always know about the show, and I didn't always have cable or satellite.But getting back to the Encore Gospel Magazine, it's great to have it. Rushion Interviews The Suga Chef and Ricky Anderson This week's topic is: Exceeding Expectations and I will be speaking with…   My guest is Executive Pastry Chef Padua Player, also known as SugaChef.  He is the youngest of seven children.  He has been featured on WE TV's Platinum Weddings and was a competitor on Food Network's Sweet Genius and Holiday Baking Championship. He won the 2013 Capital Food Fight's High Stakes Cake Battle in DC, hosted by Duff Goldman. Following that success, he returned in 2014 and 2015 as a celebrity chef judge and appeared on Cooking Channel's Cake Hunters in 2018. Television called on his sweet culinary skills once again and he appeared on CHOPPED Sweets on Food Network in 2020. Duane M. Harley, Esq. is an entertainment attorney specializing in contract transactions. Duane Harley graduated from Quinnipiac University School of Law in Hamden, CT in 1999. While attending law school Mr. Harley became the President of the Black Law Student Association for two (2) consecutive years. He has written for In Living Color, The PJ's (which he co-created), The Office (on which he has appeared as Mr. Brown, the diversity consultant), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. An 'icon' is much more known than a celebrity. They are someone who leaves a mark on history. They have a strong depth of significance. They are a person who is well known, and who people look up to. Jayne Kennedy Overton embodies that description breaking barriers when she became the first woman of color in the late 70s to host THE NFL on CBS, a national sports show, on what Bob Costas credited as being "the template for modern studio shows." The ease of her manner as an interviewer, whether talking to a young Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Joe Namath, or Muhammad Ali, along with a sincere intimacy in her tone, body language, and steady eye contact, was completely disarming. Managing to demonstrate both knowledge of subject while projecting the ability to not take herself too seriously, this Ohio-raised former beauty queen is undeniably charismatic.  Recently, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC inducted Jayne into the annuls of media pioneers, honoring her alongside luminaries, Diahann Carroll, Nat King Cole, Nichelle Nichols, The Supremes, and Don Cornelius.
