Kwa suggests that reading and thinking about books like these, that push us to engage with these complicated questions, teaches us how to become better readers. Brecht Evens (1986) is striptekenaar. Hij studeerde illustratie in Gent, won op zijn negentiende een debuutprijs met Een Boodschap Uit De Ruimte. In 2010 kreeg hij de Willy Vandersteenprijs voor zijn boek Ergens waar je niet wil zijn. Hij wordt de belangrijkste vertegenwoordiger genoemd van de nieuwe golf Vlaamse stripmakers. In deze podcast werden zijn boeken twee keer gekozen: Illustratrice Floor Denil koos Panter als één van haar drie boeken, Sabien Clement koos De liefhebbers. Ze zei over het boek: Ik zie De Liefhebbers van Brecht Evens als een hoogtepunt in de graphic novel. Op het moment van ons gesprek is net zijn boek De bondgenoten 1 verschenen, in het Frans Le Roi Méduse 1. Brecht Evens woont nu in Parijs, waar ik hem ook ging opzoeken. Zijn werk verschijnt ook in het Frans en wordt in verschillende talen vertaald. We hadden afgesproken in een café (in de wijk Belleville) waar hij graag zit omdat het een van de weinige plekken is waar hij kan roken. Toen ik aankwam, zat hij stukken tekst over te typen van papier op zijn computer. Het ging om aangepaste teksten van zijn volgende strip. We trokken naar een voorlopig appartementje in de buurt - helemaal bovenaan op de 7de verdieping (enkel trappen). Zijn atelier is op een andere plek. En zo zaten we te praten, tussen sofa en wasrek. Hij vertelt over dierenverhalen, over zijn psychose die hij 10 jaar geleden had en waarvan hij verhaalaspecten gebruikt heeft in zijn nieuwe boek. Hij legt uit waarom De Da Vinci Code een psychotisch boek is. Het gaat over de tekeningen die hij verkoopt, over zijn greatest hits, over het archief dat zijn ouders bijhouden, en hij vertelt over de invloed van Suske en Wiske, Jommeke en Kuifje op zijn werk. L'auteur belge d'expression flamande s'affranchit des codes traditionnels (la case, les phylactères) et même d'un caractère fondamental de la bande dessinée : la ressemblance d'un personnage d'une séquence à l'autre. Nous verrons comment, l'air de rien, Les Rigoles réinventent à leur façon le médium.Aurélia Aurita est née en 1980. Elle publie ses premières histoires dans Fluide glacial et se fait connaître du grand public avec « Fraise et chocolat » (2006). L'autrice poursuit sur sa lancée avec « Buzz-moi », « Vivi des Vosges » et le reportage « LAP ! Un roman d'apprentissage », avant de signer chez Casterman « Ma vie est un best-seller », puis « Comme un chef » avec Benoît Peeters. Avec la chanteuse Jeanne Cherhal, elle donne plusieurs représentations de concerts dessinés. Chroniques du Muséum : 21 illustrations inédites accompagnées d'autant d'articles qui retracent une histoire des sciences ainsi que l'histoire d'une institution qui a toujours été ancrée et engagée dans les enjeux de son temps. Des chroniques au ton humoristique à la frontière entre histoire, science et fiction.Le Muséum est un établissement scientifique riche de plus de 400 ans d'histoire naturaliste, ayant vu passer d'éminents savants, ayant ouvert des lieux devenus incontournables pour le public et toujours en quête de connaissances sur le monde du vivant. The conversation in this month's episode includes a number of timely topics, including the way scholars define children's and YA comics, the challenges and benefits of teaching children's comics, and the exciting formal aspects of comics, as well as other categories, such as verse novels. Charles had just returned from the San Diego Comic Con, and he shared a list of sessions that were held in conjunction with SDCC at the San Diego Public Library, as well as commentary on this year's nominees in the three award areas devoted to young readers: Best Publication for Early Readers, Best Publication for Kids, and Best Publication for Teens. Another rich topic for discussion among the panelists was the portrayal of children in comics written for adults. Recent releases mentioned in this regard included Emil Ferris' My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Nick Drnaso's Beverly, and Brecht Evens' Panther. Recommended children's texts that seem to be breaking conventions include Eric Orchard's Bera, the One-Headed Troll, Drew Weing's The Creepy Case Files of Margo Maloo, and favorite texts to teach included Luke Pearson's Hilda series, Barry Deutsch's Hereville series, and Lewis/Aydin/Powell's March series, among others. If listeners have been looking for a good list of must-read children's and YA comics, this roundtable delivers on that count.

The Dynamic Doctoral Duo is back for another action-packed episode promising thrills and chills! This time, Gwen and Derek begin by discussing Brecht Evens's  Panther (Drawn and Quarterly), a book that gives a first impression of innocence but then becomes darker and increasingly disturbing as the story develops. Gwen is a scholar of children's literature, and she points out that Evens follows many of the tropes found in picture books, and his style -- what you'd find in his earlier works, The Wrong Place and The Making Of -- may even lead readers to see this as one. But she argues that Panther is anything but a text for younger readers. Evens's penchant for watercolor and his borderless panel style make this a most sophisticated narrative, one with no easy answers and ending in ambiguity. Next, Derek and Gwen transition into yet another portal narrative, Gene Ha's Mae #1 (Dark Horse Comics). In this new creator-owned series, which began last year as a Kickstarter, the titular character's older sister, Abbie, has discovered a way into another world and often absents herself from her family. But Abbie's fantastical getaway begins to insert itself into the mundane world, initiating events that are sure to carry the  homebody Mae into unexpected adventures. This is Ha's first attempt at both writing and illustrating in a longer narrative form, and it's a series that both cohosts plan on returning to in the months to come. Finally, the two wrap up by doing something that has not yet been done on The Comics Alternative: reviewing a Walking Dead title. As much as Derek enjoys the popular comic-book series and the TV show, they've just never had the opportunity to discuss a beginning point or something standalone from Kirkman and Allard's franchise. But this time, they have: Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin's one-shot, The Walking Dead: The Alien. This is available on the creators' Panel Syndicate website, and as with the other titles you'll find there -- e.g., The Private Eye and Barrier -- this is a pay-what-you-want comic. Gwen does not have much history with The Walking Dead, and she's not a fan of zombie narratives, so she brings a unique perspective to the discussion...and likes what she reads. And as Derek points out, this is a title that will resonate with avid Walking Dead fans and at the same time can hold up outside of any larger narrative context. As if we needed any addition reason to love the creative team of Vaughan and Martin.
