Nous profitons de la sortie du Tome 2 de Moi ce que j'aime, c'est les monstres, pour vous parler une nouvelle fois de notre énorme coup de cœur pour l'histoire imaginée par Emil Ferris. Moi ce que j'aime, c'est les monstresKaren Reyes est une petite fille à l'imagination débordante. Elle adore les histoires de monstre et s'imagine en loup garou. Le lecteur la suit au travers de ses dessins et écris qu'elle pose dans son carnet. Karen vit avec sa mère et son grand frère dans le sous-sol d'un immeuble de Chicago dans les années 60. Un jour, une de ses voisines, Anka, est retrouvée morte dans des circonstances étranges. La petite fille se lance dans une enquête qui lui permet de révéler non seulement les secrets d'Anka mais aussi ceux de sa propre famille. L'incroyable parcours de résilience d'Emil FerrisEmil Ferris est une autrice d'une grande inspiration. Elle est une vraie guerrière. En 2001, elle contracte le virus du Nil occidental qui la paralyse du côté droit. Sa carrière d'illustratrice aurait pu s'arrêter de façon tragique mais c'était sans conter sur l'esprit résilient d'Emil. Motivée par son entourage, l'artiste se bat pour retrouver sa motricité et réapprendre à dessiner. Durant sa convalescence, elle a l'idée de moi ce que j'aime, c'est les monstres, en s'inspirant de certains aspects de sa jeunesse, notamment sa fascination pour les monstres, tel que les vampires et les loups-garous. Un comics qui touche en plein cœurMoi ce que j'aime, c'est les monstres est un récit très touchant. Le comics met en scène des personnages d'outsider qui tente de survivre. On a tout d'alors l'histoire émouvante et choquante de la voisine. Celle-ci est mise en parallèle avec la société des années 60. L'horreur se répète toujours, racisme, violence, homophobie. L'autre parallèle se fait avec la petite Karen qui se voit comme un monstre. Cette vision est à la fois une réaction au rejet de son homosexualité par sa mère et encore une fois par la société. C'est également un moyen de défense et de survivre pour la petite fille qui en vient à se dissocier lorsque les émotions sont trop dures à gérer. Une grande palette artistiqueLe comics parle d'art et l'utilise comme un outil narratif. On trouve des références à Manet, Goya, les vieilles gravures des récits du 19 ème siècle, Frida Kahlo, mais aussi toute l'imagerie des films de monstre, de la Universal et de la Hammer. Toutes ces références et ses changements de style dans le dessin permettent de traduire le côté perdu du personnage principal, mais aussi l'innocence de sa jeunesse. L'art permet aussi au lecteur de prendre conscience du subconscient et bien souvent de la violence qui se cache dans certains personnages. Moi, ce que j'aime c'est les monstres est une œuvre d'une grande intelligence et sensibilité. On vous la recommande chaudement. D'autan plus que l'édition de M. Toussain l'ouverture est très belle. Es ist das gezeichnete Tagebuch der kleinen Karen Reyes aus dem Chicago der 1960er Jahre, indem sie ihren Alltag aufzeichnet und die Abgründe der verarmten Milieus ebenso dokumentiert, wie die Gemälde des Chicagoer Kunstmuseums. Es ist ein Krimi, in dem Karen Reyes nicht an den Selbstmord ihrer erwachsenen Freundin Anka, einer Holocaust-Überlebenden glaubt. Analyzing the way that recent works of graphic narrative use the comics form to engage with the “problem” of reproduction, Shiamin Kwa's Perfect Copies: Reproduction and the Contemporary Comic (Rutgers UP, 2023) reminds us that the mode of production and the manner in which we perceive comics are often quite similar to the stories they tell. Perfect Copies considers the dual notions of reproduction, mechanical as well as biological, and explores how comics are works of reproduction that embed questions about the nature of reproduction itself. Through close readings of the comics My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris, The Black Project by Gareth Brookes, The Generous Bosom series by Conor Stechschulte, Sabrina by Nick Drnaso, and Panther by Brecht Evens, Perfect Copies shows how these comics makers push the limits of different ideas of “reproduction” in strikingly different ways. Kwa suggests that reading and thinking about books like these, that push us to engage with these complicated questions, teaches us how to become better readers. Dr. Shiamin Kwa is Chair of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Comparative Literature at Bryn Mawr College. Her written work explores relationships between form and content, text and image, self and self-presentation, surface and depth, and the conflicts between what we say and what we mean. This week, authors and editors Lauren DeJulio Bell, Rebecca Makkai, and Daiva Markelis discuss their contributions to the collection Growing Up Chicago. This conversation originally took place May 15, 2022 and was recorded live at the American Writers Festival. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME About Growing Up Chicago: Growing Up Chicago is a collection of coming-of-age stories that reflects the diversity of the city and its metropolitan area. Primarily memoir, the book collects work by writers who spent their formative years in the region to ask: What characterizes a Chicago author? Is it a certain feel to the writer's language? A narrative sensibility? The mention of certain neighborhoods or locales? Contributors to the volume include renowned writers Ana Castillo, Stuart Dybek, Emil Ferris, Charles Johnson, Rebecca Makkai, Erika L. Sánchez, and George Saunders, as well as emerging talents. While the authors represented here write from distinct local experiences, some universals emerge, including the abiding influence of family and friends and the self-realizations earned against the background of a place sparkling with promise and riven by inequality, a place in constant flux. The stories evoke childhood trips to the Art Institute of Chicago, nighttime games of ringolevio, and the giant neon Magikist lips that once perched over the expressway, sharing perspectives that range from a young man who dreams of becoming an artist to a single mother revisiting her Mexican roots, from a woman's experience with sexual assault to a child's foray into white supremacy. This book memorably explores culture, social identity, and personal growth through the eyes of Chicagoans, affirming that we each hold the ability to shape the places in which we live and write and read as much as those places shape us. About the speakers: Lauren DeJulio Bell teaches in the Honors College at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She previously taught in the UIC English Department and the Chicago Public Schools district. She serves on the associate board of StoryStudio Chicago and leads a local project (We Are All Chicago), where she engages with the people of Chicago to foster civic engagement, community writing, and artistic endeavors. Rebecca Makkai is the Chicago-based author of the novels I Have Some Questions for You, The Great Believers, The Hundred-Year House, and The Borrower, as well as the short story collection Music for Wartime. The Great Believers was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and received the ALA Carnegie Medal and the LA Times Book Prize, among other honors. Makkai is on the MFA faculties of Sierra Nevada College and Northwestern University, and she is Artistic Director of StoryStudio Chicago. Daiva Markelis is professor of English at Eastern Illinois University. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in New Ohio Review, Crab Orchard Review, The American Literary Review, Oyez, The Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine, Writing on the Edge, Women and Language, The Chicago Reader, Mattoid, and The Fourth River. Her short stories have been published in The Cream City Review and Other Voices. In 2010, the University of Chicago Press published her memoir, White Field, Black Sheep: A Lithuanian-American Life.

Souvent le texte compte autant par sa taille, sa forme, sa position dans l'image que par son seul contenu. Les lettres se boursouflent, s'amincissent ou se mettent à trembler. Elles débordent des bulles et se mêlent au dessin. Un auteur comme Will Eisner fut un virtuose des variations de lettrage, dès les années 1940. Ni le son ni le mouvement n'ont jamais manqué à la bande dessinée. Elle a trouvé de multiples manières de les suggérer. Uderzo et Gotlib, Craig Thompson, Emil Ferris et la plupart des auteurs de mangas ont fait de ces signes intermédiaires entre l'écriture et le dessin un élément essentiel de leur style.

Ep. 10 - EMIL FERRIS "Benevolent Vampires and the Starfish Army" CW: childhood sexual assault Welcome back! We have not actually been away for longer than our usual bi-weekly hiatus, but it feels like we have.  IN THIS EPISODE we sit down in her home city of Chicago with artist and graphic novelist Emil Ferris.  Emil's book "My Favorite Thing is Monsters" affected both Aimee and me deeply; SO deeply that, at our mutual friend, designer Gail Marowitz's suggestion, I was lucky enough to be able to enlist Emil into doing the art for my own last album, The Hanged Man (which was also, by the way, under Gail's brilliant design supervision).  Our conversation ranges from subtle energy and a race of benevolent vampires, to how blockages and limitations in one area of life can lead to deeper understanding and greater heights in others. As mentioned, there is a self-imposed content warning on this one because we do delve a little bit into childhood trauma, specifically, sexual abuse.  In accordance with MY experience and ever-changing perspective and standards CURRENTLY, it's not that heavy, but I realize that we're all wherever we are with this sort of thing, and I want to give you, the listener, the opportunity to opt out of approximately minutes 36:30 to 40:00.  This is audibly mentioned in the episode as well. There's also some light goofing about cigarette smoking and alcohol intake, a little earlier on, so I want to put up a flag about that for you as well.
