Brian Keene has written so many damn books! …and I had never read any of them.   This absolute horror faux-pas (and my embarrassment) is the reason that it's taken so long to get Brian on the show. But I set a week aside and read as many Keene books as I could and here we are… on a leisurely stroll through Brian's life and career, both of which he has devoted to stories of really nasty s*** happening to undeserving people. We talk abouthis bleak coming-of-age novel, Ghoul, his story of a homicidal nightfrom hell, The Complex, and his sombre study of mortality and writing inthe 21st century, The End of the Road. And between all that we cover hope and nihilism, we ask if horror could help shore up the failing centre, and Brian talks me through all the great writers I missed when I wasn't paying enough attention to horror. Enjoy!   Other books mentioned: The Rising (2003), by Brian Keene Entombed (2011), by Brian Keene Ghoul (2007), by Brian Keene End of the Road (2020), by Brian Keene The Cellar (1980), by Richard Laymon The Beast House (1986), by Richard Laymon The Island (1995), by Richard Laymon A Writer's Tale (1998), by Richard Laymon The Girl Next Door (1989), by Jack Ketchum Survivor (2002), by J.F. Gonzalez A Choir of Ill Children (2007) by Tom Piccirilli “Sticks” (1974), by Karl Edward Wagner “West Of Matamoros, South of Hell” (2017), by Brian Hodge (in Best Horror of the Year, Volume 10, edited by Ellen Datlow) The Day of the Door (2024), by Laurel Hightower The Better To Eat You With (2024), by Wesley Southard   Support Talking Scared on Patreon   Check out the Talking Scared Merch line – at VoidMerch   Come talk books on Bluesky @talkscaredpod.bsky.social  on Instagram/Threads, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode of Translating Aging, Chris welcomes Nathan Cheng, the program director at On Deck Longevity Biotech (ODLB), to discuss how ODLB is cultivating new founders and connecting people in the longevity biotech space. Nathan writes about the longevity biotech industry in his Longevity Marketcap Newsletter, is the founder of Longevity List which aims to connect job seekers, companies and investors in the longevity industry, and is on a self-professed mission to end biological aging, Today, he tells us about the purpose of ODLB, its achievements thus far, and the bridge it hopes to build in the longevity biotech industry. Nathan begins the conversation by discussing what On Deck is and why the company was formed. He briefly narrates his journey in tech, what increased his interest in the longevity space, and the mission of the ODLB, as well as how the fellowship works towards creating founders. He goes on to discuss the obstacles many face when they get accepted in the fellowship and how ODLB works to reduce those obstacles by promoting face-to-face interactions. Also contained in this episode are brief interviews with ODLB fellows Brian Hodge and Gabe Warshauer-Baker. Episode Highlights: What is On Deck? Nathan's journey in the longevity space On Deck Longevity Biotech's (ODLB) mission The importance of connecting those in the longevity biotech space How mentors contribute in ODLB Does the startup culture reward extroverts over introverts? Getting into the ODLB fellowship Interviews with ODLB fellows Feats the ODLB has achieved The future of the longevity biotech space Quotes: “At a high level, On Deck is where people come to start and accelerate their companies. It's also a place where people start and accelerate their careers in the startup economy.” “What makes On Deck unique is that it's a huge network of interconnected program communities. So we have communities centered around specific career goals.” “ODLB's mission is to increase the number of people working to build longevity biotech startups.” “For some people coming from the scientific domain, this whole idea of networking is foreign to them or nebulous.” “We're gonna generate new founders, but among the people who decide for whatever reason not to become founders, we also want them to be encouraged and empowered to be involved in longevity biotech in some other capacity.” “Putting ourselves on the map for people who are interested in building longevity biotech, I think that is our greatest achievement so far. ” “So I think just more efforts in popularizing this geroscience paradigm, you know, actually targeting aging, I think there's a lot to be done there as well.” Links: Email questions, comments, and feedback to podcast@bioagelabs.com Translating Aging on Twitter:https://twitter.com/BioAgePodcast ( @bioagepodcast) BIOAGE Labs Websitehttps://bioagelabs.com/ ( BIOAGELabs.com) BIOAGE Labs Twitterhttps://twitter.com/bioagelabs?lang=en ( @bioagelabs) BIOAGE Labshttps://www.linkedin.com/company/bioage-labs/ ( LinkedIn) On Deck Longevity Biotechhttps://www.beondeck.com/longevity-biotech/ ( Website) Nathan Chenghttps://twitter.com/realNathanCheng ( Twitter)

Sometimes you pick up a book and get a chance to embarrass yourself in front if it's author. This week the guys discuss The Immaculate Void with author Brian "The Brain" Hodge (Shhhhhhh. He doesn't actually go by The Brain.)Our hosts pander like pathetic fanbois to another author, stumble over their words, talk over their guest, and generally yell really loud things while Brian puts up with their bullshit. We learn that the one author Rance doesn't actually have a desire to fistfight is willing to throw down, and so he cowers and backtracks while Bob mocks him.The show covers both the serious and the stupid, and somehow by the skin of their teeth, the fellas manage not to make Brian walk right the hell out of the zoom meeting.P.S. WARNING!  Not like you need the reminder, but this nightmare is NSFW! We apologize for the delay in getting this episode out!  October is a silly month for us! Please bear with us. This week our heroes discuss the "Audiobook" excerpt Nightmares on Elm Street: Freddy Krueger’s Seven Sweetest Dreams, Asleep at the Wheel by Brian Hodge, narrated by the 80's Slasher Librarian. We discover that not every long hidden nightmare has to end in suffering and a week of sadness. The brothers go for a ride on the spooky side, and meet up with everyone's favorite dream demon along the way. Rance finds an author he finally doesn't want to challenge to fisticuffs, and smiles and says "uh huh," a lot to Rance's scholarly analysis of the subject matter.  At the end of the day, the guys find that sometimes if you sift though enough poop, eventually you might find a diamond someone swallowed by accident. P.S. If you're having nightmares, don't come crying to us.  That sh*t is contagious, and nobody over here wants to catch a case of the Freddys.  *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: Freddy Krueger’s Seven Sweetest Dreams, Asleep at the Wheel by Brian Hodge, narrated by the 80's Slasher Librarian.
