Thomas Jane and Mike Carey on The Lycan

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

They couldn't let go. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey resurrect The Lycan, a comics project languishing for over fifteen years. Jane and screenwriter David James Kelly initiated the concept and hired Carey to write the script. An artist was also hired. That artist disappeared. An opportunity arose years later, and a new artist, Diego Yapur, finally materialized this ruthless tale of adventure and horror. The North Sea. 1797. A ship shatters on the shore of a Scottish isle. The hunters within spill upon the sand, encountering a Red Coat regiment and a Convent-turned-Fortress. The three factions mistrust each other but must find unity if they're to defend themselves from a hirsute plague. The Lycan recalls the gnarliest stories in the best comic book anthologies: Twisted Tales, Creepy, Vault of Horror, etc. Yet, it's given the space that writers like Bruce Jones were never afforded. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey are confident storytellers who've spent a lifetime consuming this beautiful medium and know they can let the title and the many engaging characters below it do the work. The beast is coming, but in The Lycan #1, the horror explored is utterly, painfully human. With the French Revolution on the horizon, paranoia grips everyone, and the faith carried by pirates, soldiers, and nuns is challenged and found fractured. How can they possibly fight their doggie dinner destiny? The Lycan allows our podcast conversation with Thomas Jane and Mike Carey to travel into various caves and crannies. We dig into their passion for the comic book medium and how it differs from movies (The Punisher) and novels (The Girl With All The Gifts). We discuss the comic's complicated origin and the challenge of collaboration, as well as the powerful, relatable themes at this book's center. Fear, paranoia, and faith - who needs a werewolf to do you in? The Lycan #1 is now available on ComiXology but will eventually see physical release through Ablaze. We speak with M. R. Carey about his book 'The Girl With All The Gifts', where the zombie fungus Cordyceps plays a central role in bringing about the end of civilization. We talk about the appeal of a post-apocalyptic story and discuss some of the science in Merlin Sheldrake's book 'Entangled Life': scientific revolutions and evolutions, gestalt shifts, the ancient evolutionary history of fungi, how they can be both parasitic and symbiotic, and how all of life is like a lichen.  Mike tells us  how he came to be a writer, and about his experience of benevolent presences on psilocybin – and the ineffability of the psychedelic experience.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Carey_(writer)https://www.littlebrown.co.uk/contributor/m-r-carey-2/https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17235026-the-girl-with-all-the-giftshttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt4547056/Buzzsprout (podcast host):https://thescienceinthefiction.buzzsprout.comEmail: thescienceinthefiction@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/743522660965257/Twitter:https://twitter.com/MartyK5463

Volles Haus, viele Themen: Die DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS düsen ins WUNDERLAND - VOM KINDHEITSTRAUM ZUM WELTERFOLG, während DER DRITTE GAST zuhause bleiben muss. Derweil sind sich THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS und die ANTIGANG einig: WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN. That's Kinoplus. Adieu. I had no clue then I would end up behind a camera years later.” Studying Graphic Design at Torquay Fine Art School he discovered a love of B&W photography as well as daydreaming about movies and movie making. “So I borrowed lights and a Super 8 camera from the school and made my first short film with my brother as the lead and my mum as the gaffer!“ He attended the Napier Film School in Edinburgh wanting, like most, to be a director yet discovered another key role he felt instantly drawn to - cinematographer. He spent his entire grant on old Arriflex ST camera from a former BBC Cameraman and began shooting a number of music promos and shorts films with friends, learning as he went. (One short, SEX & DEATH, won a Scottish BAFTA Television Craft Award for Lighting). In 2002 he shot his first feature film THE LAST GREAT WILDERNESS for Oscar winning director, David MacKenzie. His first real break came with feature film THE SWEENEY (2012 d. Nick Love) based on the 70’s TV show. “I remember taking my parents to see it at a Multiplex in Devon and that feeling of shear pride and knowing no matter how hard this industry can be, cinematography, and the artistry that came with it was my lifelong passion.” For his first TV experience he shot one episode of DOCTOR WHO (2013 d. Colm McCarthy) which led to episodes of RIPPER STREET (2013 d. Kieron Hawkes) and then the entire Season 2 of the acclaimed show PEAKY BLINDERS (2014 d. Colm McCarthy) which earned him a BAFTA & RTS nomination. In New Orleans he shot AMERICAN HERO (2015 d. Nick love) a documentary style feature film giving him an insight into the American film scene. It was while shooting the Canadian based movie I STILL SEE YOU (2017 d. Scott Speer) he was invited to LA to shoot the series THE ASSASSINATION OF GIANNI VERSACE (2018) a vast TV production for Ryan Murphy Productions and Fox Studios (that went on to be nominated for 18 Emmys). “I couldn’t believe my luck so I put my head down and worked and created as hard as I could” Since then he has photographed the powerful transgender TV show, POSE (2018-19) in New York (based on the 1990 documentary, Paris is Burning ) and more recently the alternative vision of discrimination in HOLLYWOOD (2020) for Netflix which both changed his view on the power of entertainment and "how it can make a difference by challenging and possibly healing key social issues." He was invited into the BSC in 2018. Despite being adapted from a successful novel, The Girl With All The Gifts failed to connect at the box office in 2016 - and passed us by completely. Which is a shame, as it's one of the best and most thoughtful British horror movies of the past few years, and one that definitely merits exposure to a wider audience.  Tune into this week's podcast as we break down the plot, play a merry round of drinking games and pitch the fantasy sequel ideas that this movie surely doesn't really need. We also reach out to our regular listeners for their thoughts, while Harry is forced to reckon with the return of his greatest cinema nemesis... ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we look back on some classic one-off cinema moments and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. After three years and over 170 episodes, we may take the occasional Zombie bite, but we always seem to rise from the dead... There is a very brief spoiler free review before we get into a deep discussion about the socio political themes that are subliminally in the message of the movie and its exploration of how trauma can change a person. It's not all serious; we talk about the fun Easter eggs Peele sprinkled throughout and our favorite kills! Before we get into that, Alexz basically spent her weekend at the cinema watching French genre films; Yann Gonzalez's highly stylized slasher KNIFE AND HEART, Gaspar Noe's psychedelic horror CLIMAX, and a midnight screening of 70s sci-fi movie FANTASTIC PLANET. Jeanette and Will were festive for St Patrick's Day and saw the new LEPRECHAUN. Will is rewatching all of GAME OF THRONES to prepare for the final season.
