Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss how this performance by a five-narrator cast is truly special. The Fall children harness unique powers. When a magical rainbow-haired girl reveals her connection with the family, it kicks off a whirlwind of secrets that will either break them apart or further unite them. What's more magical is the gorgeous concoction of every narrator's style. It genuinely feels like each character is a complete story on their own, but when blended together, they create a symphony of mystery, challenges, and compelling world-building. This is a sneak peak at Jess and Liz's other podcast "Carrey'd Away" where they're joined Broadway's "The Prom" stars Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle Mccalla join us to unravel the chameleon-like career of Jim Carrey, sharing laughs as we reminisce on his metamorphosis from rubber-faced comedian to a thespian of depth. Today we're talking about the forgotten Coppola romantic comedy called "Peggy Sue Got Married," where Jim Carrey plays the best friend of a very campy Nicolas Cage. Our stroll down memory lane brings us face to face with the rhino scene that defined "Ace Ventura" and the sublime moments of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," interspersed with personal stories that paint a fuller picture of Carrey's unique trajectory. It's an episode punctuated with chuckles and reflections, much like the roles that have shaped Carrey's legacy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What lullabies did we listen to as kids? Do we remember how WEIRD the children's stories we were read as kids were? Does Tony nominee indeed have a dog fighting ring in her basement? Will I ever finally get Jonathan Groff to pay attention to the nonsensical beef I'm trying to start with him? WHO KNOWS! But we talk about all of this and more on this week's episode featuring guests Caitlin Kinnunen and performer/writer Ryan Bauer-Walsh. From our discussion about their upcoming project THE RAINBOW LULLABY to our heated exchange about whether we'd rather have fingers as nipples or nipples as fingers, it was a laugh a minute with these two. Last season, The Prom leapt onto the Broadway scene, delighting audiences with an original queer-themed musical just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. In The Prom, teenage lesbian Emma Nolan is banned from attending her high school prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa. When a group of narcissistic Broadway performers hear the news, they travel to Indiana to help Emma and pick up some good press along the way. While this premise sounds quite humorous — which it is, The Prom also moved audiences with its great heart and depth. This week, we asked Caitlin Kinnunen, who received a Tony nomination for originating the role of Emma, into the studio to chat about her experience as a queer actress bringing this role to life. In addition to The Prom, Caitlin has performed on Broadway in Spring Awakening and The Bridges of Madison County. Here’s our conversation… Learn more about your ad choices. Tony Award nominee Cailtin Kinnunen joins me on Zoom to discuss her big move to New York City, the benefits of being homeschooled, how she celebrated her sixteenth birthday, & how she and I became friends. We also trade stories and compare moments of panic onstage, discuss the familial bonds she built in THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, how THE PROM became the gift that keeps on giving, and how she has used her time this year to reflect and recalibrate after a busy and hectic 2019.
"What does ideal visibility look like?" "How does ideal visibility lead to more freedom to explore gender expression and sexual identity?" "Why do bisexuals need visibility?" "Why was The Prom more important than people realized?"On this episode, I have a Prom reunion with the two incredible leading ladies--Caitlin Kinnunen (she/her) and Izzy McCalla (she/her)--who made national television history when they shared the first same-sex kiss in The Prom's performance on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Queer stories are increasingly becoming more visible in all entertainment mediums and that is extremely important considering how long the Queer community was only exposed to "straight" narratives or stereotypical portrayals of Queer characters. However, sometimes people can see all this increased visibility as a check in a box and not feel the need to keep fighting for it to be better. Sometimes people, even the most "progressive," can fail to acknowledge the privileges that come with living in a liberal bubble. Caitlin, Izzy, and I talk about why The Prom was so important because not only did it help so many people, including themselves, feel comfortable in their sexual identity, but it also showed many living in these bubbles that these stories about overcoming adversity, even in a more progressive world, still exist. We also discuss the importance of visibility and acceptance of all sexual identities; too often Queer people are defined by the relationships they are in and not by what they say they are. We talk about the idea of bi-erasure and how gender and sexual profiling can cause Queer people to struggle to accept themselves in a world that tells them what they are instead of listening to what they say they are.Follow Izzy and Caitlin:Izzy: https://www.instagram.com/izzymccalla/Caitlin: https://www.instagram.com/caitlin.kinnunen/"If I'm Not Gay Enough, & I'm Not Straight Enough, Then What Am I?" by Lauren Patten: https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2020/06/9880848/lauren-patten-jagged-little-pill-queer-bisexual-coming-outBlack Trans Femmes in the Arts:Follow: https://twitter.com/BTFAcollectiveLearn: https://linktr.ee/btfacollectiveDonate: https://www.artsbusinesscollaborative.org/asp-products/black-trans-femmes-in-the-arts-sponsored-projected_/Show Produced by Nick EiblerEdited by Addison McKissackTheme Song written by Matt Gregory, Colin Egan, and Mike Hubbard Produced by Colin Egan and Mike HubbardLogo Design by David Pavón

Caitlin Kinnunen, the lead actress in the current hit musical “The Prom” on Broadway talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. “The Prom” is about Emma (Kinnunen) a small-town girl who just wants to bring her girlfriend to the prom. When she makes national headlines news because the PTA cancels the event rather than allow this to happen four Broadway stars whose theatrical production closed on opening night decide that this could be the break they need to get a little publicity for themselves so they decide to go to the small town in Indiana to save the day. “The Prom” was written by Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin with a score by Beguelin and Matthew Sklar and features Tony winner Beth Leavel, Brooks Ashmanskas, Christopher Sieber and Angie Schworer. You may remember that Caitlin made LGBTQ history last November when she performed a scene from “The Prom” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and she kissed her co-star during the live performance. As a fierce ally we asked Caitlin about how she got involved in this groundbreaking role and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what she hopes to accomplish with her work Kinnunen stated, “I feel very lucky and fortunate that I’ve been part of pieces that really have a voice. I’ve gotten to do shows like “Spring Awakening” and “Next To Normal” and now this show “The Prom” and I’m really happy with that and I love being able to do theatre pieces that say something. I love being able to use my voice to open up conversations and really talk to people about their experiences. So I hope to continue to do work like that whether it is films, TV, plays, musicals, what have you. I think acting is such a great vehicle and conversation starter that people can see things that they normally wouldn’t see and can put up discussions that you normally wouldn’t have. I just hope to continue to do that.” Caitlin Kinnunen was born and raised in Washington State. She moved to New York when she was 16 to make her Broadway debut in “Spring Awakening”. She later appeared on Broadway in “The Bridges of Madison County” and on the first national tour of “Next to Normal”. Kinnunen has also appeared in numerous film and television projects including “The Intern”, “It's Kind of a Funny Story”, “Sweet Little Lies”, “Younger”, “American Vandal”, “The Knic” and Law & Order: SVU. Happy Promposal Day! Caitlin Kinnunen may go to THE PROM eight times a week on Broadway as Emma, a high schooler who wants to bring her girlfriend to the big dance. But when she was a teenager herself, she never actually attended prom. On today’s episode, Caitlin opens up about being home schooled and how she could only go to the before and after parties with a friend. Her home schooling was largely due to being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a young age, and being at home meant better care of her condition. She stayed active in local theater, though, auditioning and performing in her hometown of Seattle, Washington. But it was when she landed the role of Thea as a replacement in SPRING AWAKENING in 2008 that she finally moved to New York City. Once that Broadway run ended the following year, it would be another 5 years before her next Broadway show, BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, and almost another 5 years until THE PROM opened at the Longacre Theater. There were times during those in-between years Caitlin wasn’t sure she would “make it” in this business. She even had to go on Medicaid at one point when her Actors Equity health insurance ran out. So being a part of THE PROM isn’t just making up for her lack of one in high school, it is also giving her wonderfully supportive cast and stage management team, who also help monitor her blood sugar levels throughout the show and make sure she has plenty of fruit snacks hidden around the stage. Lastly, Caitlin shares her thoughts on the upcoming Tony Award nominations and what that could mean to the show. But she had even more fun with some fantasy casting of her fellow actors in Sondheim's classic INTO THE WOODS. One giveaway: Beth Leavel would play the Witch, of course. ---------- The time and expense needed to bring these guests and conversations to you each week is sometimes challenging but always rewarding.
