Connor and Dylan are joined by Kyle Selig (Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends, Mean Girls). Summer is upon us, and the twins are excited to welcome the dreamy and delightful Kyle Selig for his long-awaited episode of DRAMA. He brings his sunny personality and sense of humor to the pod for an amazing chat, almost like we're… old friends. Speaking of “Old Friends,” we chat about the beautiful Broadway production that Kyle is part of alongside Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, and friend of the pod Beth Leavel, as he sings the “Sondheim Tenor Sampler Platter.” Naturally, this trio gushes over Kyle's wife, Erika Henningsen (now starring in Just in Time), and recounts moments in their love story from Mean Girls to their wedding day. The conversation includes stories about Water for Elephants, Los Angeles living, and superstar Grey Henson. We reflect on The Goofy Movie, Welcome to Flatch, and Aaron Tveit and Gavin Creel's impact on a young Kyle. Stick around for Thunderbolts* and Miss Flo (yes gawd!), plus many doses of DRAMA. and the birth of a beautiful friendship among these millennial men. Over the history of the Marquis Theatre, three musicals have closed during the month of December. Two of them we've already covered here on the podcast: Me and My Girl and Nick & Nora. The third one was The Drowsy Chaperone and is the focus of this bonus mini-episode. It starred Tony Award winner Sutton Foster was cast as Janet Van De Graff, Emmy-nominated TV star Georgia Engel was Mrs. Tottendale, British actor Edward Hibbert played Underling, and the inimitable Beth Leavel took on the title role of the Chaperone. My goal was to keep this under 15 minutes, but the more I learned, the more I had to include. Plus, I finally had to figure out why it didn't win Best Musical. So please enjoy this "quick" look at one of the most successful musicals that has come and gone from the Marquis. Jershua Cavazos is a musical theatre actor. She made her Broadway debut in The Prom back in 2018. In this show, she was in the ensemble. Cavazos got to share the stage with pure musical theatre legends such as Beth Leavel, Brooks Ashmanskas, Christopher Sieber, and Angle Schworer just to name a few of her fellow cast members. The show sadly closed less than a year into it's run in 2019. Post pandemic, Cavazos was starred in the Off Broadway musical, Between the Lines. (with Arielle Jacobs from Season 2). The Riverfront Times wrote, “Under the leadership of executive producer Mike Isaacson, the quality of Muny productions rose like the proverbial phoenix.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch named him “Theatre Artist of the Year,” noting that by “staging one impressive production after another, he made The Muny simultaneously hip and – be- lieve it – important to our community.” During Isaacson's tenure, The Muny has produced new developmental productions of Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn, Lerner and Loewe's Paint Your Wagon and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. During its record-breaking 100th season, The Muny became the first theatre in the world to produce the legendary Jerome Robbins' Broadway, doing unprecedented archival work on both the artistic and business side. During that same season, The Muny produced the U.S. regional premiere of Jersey Boys. Isaacson has changed the look and feel of a Muny production, overseeing a transformation in every aspect of pro- duction that culminated in 2019 with the arrival of the theatre's extraordinary James S. Mc- Donnell stage, a state-of-the art stage house that includes revolutionary LED technology, automated sets and a host of other innovations. During the summer of 2020, when The Muny was closed due to COVID-19, Mike produced and created The Muny 2020 Variety Hour Live!, an online show that reached more than a worldwide audience of over 400,000. With Kristin Caskey, Isaacson has produced more than 23 Broadway musicals and plays, national tours, off-Broadway and London productions. All told, his productions have received more than 122 Tony nominations and 34 Tony Awards. Sandra considers herself to be all things spiritual, then clarifies she is not a part of any religious body. As a spiritual councillor, nondenominational minister, actor, singer, shaman, wedding officiant and more, she sees her role as a spiritual councillor that supports one quest to find and experience a deeper meaning in life, death, and marriage ceremonies. She is vibrant, kind, articulate, fashionable, quick to smile, has an open heart filled with wisdom and a free spirit. She lives in NYC with her husband and has emersed herself in many spiritual pathways through life. And found that acting was one way for her voice and expression to be heard. As a child, she recalls being highly intuitive, having visions, invisible playmates and many metaphysical abilities and experiences. As a child, her parents were open to her spiritual experiences, but at some point, she says, these experiences became less acceptable and were placed under a blanket, hidden from sight. Growing up in a faith-based family, Sandra left her church at 18, finding different pathway for bringing her voice and truth into the world. But as in life, there are pivotal moments. Sandra's arrived with her Mother's Cancer diagnosis. As they prepared for her passing, and eventually her death, Sandra entered her calling, to become a non-denominational minister. Sandra recalls the pain of losing her mom. They had been deeply connected and her Mom was her biggest supporter. As Mother and daughter prepared for death, they spend many special and unique times together, creating and writing her obituary, choosing favored songs that would be song and designing her Mom's funeral, a true tribute to her mom's life. And this is Sandra! A multi-dimentional spiritual and caring women of the arts, heart and mind. I hope you enjoy learning more about Sandra and her life experience in this episode of Mind Your Freedom. BIO: Inter-spiritual Minister, Actor/Singer, and Motivational presenter, Sandra lives her life mission of “Create + Uplift = Changing Myself and the World.” After a lifetime of learning about the mystical, earth-based and energetic traditions, Sandra answered the call to spiritual leadership, taking on a parallel career by enrolling in seminary at The New Seminary (TNS) for Interfaith Studies in NYC and was ordained at St. John the Divine in 2007. She has a subsequent seminary degree in Spiritual Counseling from One Spirit Interfaith Seminary, also in NYC. From 2008-2011, Sandra was the Dean of 1st year students at TNS. She is a multiple award-winning wedding officiant and speaks before many diverse groups. Sandra has been a professional actor and singer for 40+ years and holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in drama and music. Her theatre performing credits include lead or supporting roles in Broadway National tours, Off- Broadway, and Regional and Summer Stock theatres across the country. As a singer, she has performed in the cabaret rooms of NYC, on cruise ships and on stages around the world. (Member AEA & SAG/AFRA) She has shared the stage with notables including Eartha Kitt, John Astin, Wilford Brimley, Rebecca Luker, and Beth Leavel, among others. Her distinctive voice can be heard in commercials and books on tape. In 2014, Sandra started her own company, Sacred Stages, LLC, which produces plays, performance art, and media, as well as her one woman shows dedicated to exploring our big questions about life and contemplating these challenging times. Her most recent show, The Edge of Everyday, was nominated for a Broadway World Cabaret Award, and the live CD recording is available on Amazon and CD Baby. Sandra's natural connection to earth based wisdom inspired her to add the role of Activist to her resume, by becoming a Climate Reality Leader in 2017, after completing her training with Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project. In 2020, she was asked by thought leader and author Lesley Michaels to join the staff of The International Strategic Alliance of Women, an on-line membership company that empowers, uplifts, and educates professional women at all levels (www.isaow.com). The pair discussed the importance and impact of "What the Constitution Means to Me."Next, Matt talked to David Korins, Tony-winning scenic designer behind the spectacularly unique set for "Beetlejuice." Then, Matt talked to the Tony-nominated, McArthur Genius winning book writer of "Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations," Dominique Morisseau.Following that is a chat between Matt and American Theatre's senior editor Diep Tran about her recent article advocating for the Tony Awards to include work from outside of Broadway's 41 theaters. Finally, the episode concludes with Tony-winning choreographer of "Kiss Me Kate," Warren Carlyle.Intro: 00:00:10Beth Leavel: 00:02:35Ashley Steves: 00:24:22David Korins: 00:38:08Dominique Morisseau: 00:59:23Diep Tran: 01:23:10Warren Carlyle: 01:40:02Contact Beth Leavel:https://theprommusical.comContact Ashley Steves:https://ashleysteves.comTwitter: @NoThisIsAshleyInstagram: @nothisisashleyContact David Korins:http://www.davidkorinsdesign.comhttps://beetlejuicebroadway.comTwitter: @DavidKorinsInstagram: @davidkorinsFacebook: Click HereContact Dominique Morisseau:http://dominiquemorisseau.comhttps://www.ainttooproudmusical.comTwitter: @domorisseauInstagram: @domorisseauFacebook: Click HereContact Diep Tran:https://dieptran.comhttps://www.americantheatre.org/byline/diep-tranhttps://www.americantheatre.org/2019/05/06/why-the-tony-awards-should-recognize-off-broadway/Twitter: @diepthoughtInstagram: @dieptimesContact Warren Carlyle:https://www.roundabouttheatre.org/get-tickets/2018-2019-season/kiss-me-kate/Twitter: @carlylewarrenInstagram: @warrencarlyleContact Matt: matt@broadwayradio.comTwitter: @BWWMattInstagram: @BWWMattTheme music provided by www.bensound.comMusic in episode:"The Lady's Improving" from "The Prom" Original Cast Album"It's Not About Me" from "The Prom" Original Cast AlbumHighlights from “What the Constitution Means to Me” at New York Theatre Workshop"Dead Mom" from “Beetlejuice” Original Cast Album“My Girl” from “Ain’t Too Proud” Original Cast Album"100 Years of Subterranean Blues" from the "Rags Parkland Sings the Songs of the Future" Off-Broadway Premiere“Too Darn Hot” from the “Kiss Me Kate” 2019 Broadway Revival See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week we chatted with Tony Award winner, Beth Leavel, about the hit Broadway musical, The Prom. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Caitlin Kinnunen, the lead actress in the current hit musical “The Prom” on Broadway talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. “The Prom” is about Emma (Kinnunen) a small-town girl who just wants to bring her girlfriend to the prom. When she makes national headlines news because the PTA cancels the event rather than allow this to happen four Broadway stars whose theatrical production closed on opening night decide that this could be the break they need to get a little publicity for themselves so they decide to go to the small town in Indiana to save the day. “The Prom” was written by Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin with a score by Beguelin and Matthew Sklar and features Tony winner Beth Leavel, Brooks Ashmanskas, Christopher Sieber and Angie Schworer. You may remember that Caitlin made LGBTQ history last November when she performed a scene from “The Prom” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and she kissed her co-star during the live performance. As a fierce ally we asked Caitlin about how she got involved in this groundbreaking role and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what she hopes to accomplish with her work Kinnunen stated, “I feel very lucky and fortunate that I’ve been part of pieces that really have a voice. I’ve gotten to do shows like “Spring Awakening” and “Next To Normal” and now this show “The Prom” and I’m really happy with that and I love being able to do theatre pieces that say something. I love being able to use my voice to open up conversations and really talk to people about their experiences. So I hope to continue to do work like that whether it is films, TV, plays, musicals, what have you. I think acting is such a great vehicle and conversation starter that people can see things that they normally wouldn’t see and can put up discussions that you normally wouldn’t have. I just hope to continue to do that.” Caitlin Kinnunen was born and raised in Washington State. She moved to New York when she was 16 to make her Broadway debut in “Spring Awakening”. She later appeared on Broadway in “The Bridges of Madison County” and on the first national tour of “Next to Normal”. Kinnunen has also appeared in numerous film and television projects including “The Intern”, “It's Kind of a Funny Story”, “Sweet Little Lies”, “Younger”, “American Vandal”, “The Knic” and Law & Order: SVU. Happy Promposal Day! Caitlin Kinnunen may go to THE PROM eight times a week on Broadway as Emma, a high schooler who wants to bring her girlfriend to the big dance. But when she was a teenager herself, she never actually attended prom. On today’s episode, Caitlin opens up about being home schooled and how she could only go to the before and after parties with a friend. Her home schooling was largely due to being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a young age, and being at home meant better care of her condition. She stayed active in local theater, though, auditioning and performing in her hometown of Seattle, Washington. But it was when she landed the role of Thea as a replacement in SPRING AWAKENING in 2008 that she finally moved to New York City. Once that Broadway run ended the following year, it would be another 5 years before her next Broadway show, BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, and almost another 5 years until THE PROM opened at the Longacre Theater. There were times during those in-between years Caitlin wasn’t sure she would “make it” in this business. She even had to go on Medicaid at one point when her Actors Equity health insurance ran out. So being a part of THE PROM isn’t just making up for her lack of one in high school, it is also giving her wonderfully supportive cast and stage management team, who also help monitor her blood sugar levels throughout the show and make sure she has plenty of fruit snacks hidden around the stage. Lastly, Caitlin shares her thoughts on the upcoming Tony Award nominations and what that could mean to the show. But she had even more fun with some fantasy casting of her fellow actors in Sondheim's classic INTO THE WOODS. One giveaway: Beth Leavel would play the Witch, of course. ---------- The time and expense needed to bring these guests and conversations to you each week is sometimes challenging but always rewarding. This week’s guest is Raleigh, North Carolina native Beth Leavel! Beth currently stars as Dee Dee Allen in The Prom on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in the original cast of 42nd Street and was featured again in the 2001 revival. The Prom marks her “lucky 13th” show in Broadway! In this episode, Beth sheds light on the fact that she never even knew what musical theatre was until her senior year of high school (she auditioned to meet guys!), and how she quickly changed paths to make performing her life’s work once she was bitten by the acting bug. See the next hit from Broadway’s Musical Comedy Dream Team – the geniuses behind "The Book of Mormon," "Aladdin," "Mean Girls"…must we go on? Tony winner BETH LEAVEL is back on Broadway in The Prom. She is playing Dee Dee Allen, a delightfully narcissistic, Tony-touting Broadway diva. Not unlike her Prom evil twin, Great White Way powerhouse Leavel oozes fabulous, but Leavel credits her worker bee mentality for her success. Her many Broadway credits iclude 42nd Street, Crazy For You, Mamma Mia!, Elf, The Drowsy Chaperone (for which she won her Tony Award) and more. She recently stopped by Show People with Paul Wontorek to talk about her incredible career, that time her son booked the gig she went in for and more.
Deborah Sharn spoke with the amazing Beth Leavel who is currently performing at The Muny as Momma Rose In GYPSY.
She might have once been a drowsy chaperone but the brilliant artist who created her, Beth Leavel, is an energetic life force whose passion for the art of musical theatre is infectious. Beth drops by Shetler Studios to sit down with Rob and Kevin and discuss her incredible career which not only boasts a Tony Award but featured her gracing the Broadway stages of such shows as 42nd Street, Crazy for You, The Civil War, Show Boat, Mamma Mia, The Drowsy Chaperone, Elf, Baby It's You, Bandstand, and the upcoming The Prom. Beth pulls back the curtain on her career to discuss how becoming a Dame led to a Tony Award, what it was like fighting in the Civil War, and why she never encores "I've Got Rhythm!" Also, Beth shines the spotlight on Casey Nicholaw, Mike Ockrent, Bobo Lewis, and many more!
