It's time to drift out across the farmlands of Iowa to find your one true love on a random encounter. Or not. This month we cover the wildly popular Bridges of Madison County and discuss what made the book so impactful and maybe why it hasn't stayed alive in public discourse over the years. For not being a particularly long book, we found a lot of great topics to cover, even though we definitely had our opinions on the book itself. Maybe this is who we are and who we're meant to be. Or maybe we should just get over ourselves. Either way!

This week, I'm so pleased to welcome back to the podcast a talented, supportive, and funny friend. Currently based in Newark, Delaware, Mitchell Beaupre is not only the Senior Editor at one of my favorite services (via Letterboxd), but they're also the co-host of the Weekend Watchlist and Four Favorites podcasts, which you can find in the stream for The Letterboxd Show. Additionally, a prolific freelance film journalist and stellar interviewer for prestigious outlets such as "The Film Stage," "Paste Magazine," "The Playlist," and "Little White Lies," you can keep up with all of their impressive work on Twitter @ItIsMitchell. Over the past few years, I've enjoyed following Mitchell's film journeys on social media, including their discovery of a trio of outstanding Meryl Streep romance movies that I love, including FALLING IN LOVE, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE, and most recently, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, which became one of their new favorites. Messaging them instantly to join me in discussing the topic of Meryl Streep in Love, we chose these three films which showcase a lighter, more accessible, and less "actorly" side of the Oscar-winning legend, yet one that might boast her best performance committed to film. And as we delve deeply into what Streep and her great co-stars and craftsmen are doing in these movies and the ways they touch us, we wind up doing a lot of storytelling along the way, culminating in a long, personal, and philosophical conversation about friendship, love, and some of our own experiences that I know listeners will appreciate. STREEPS OF FIRE: THE RIVER WILD (1994) WITH BLOOD AND POPCORN'S ERIK! Following Streep's break from heavy roles after 1988's A CRY IN THE DARK, 4 out of 5 of Streep's next movies were sharp-ish turns to comedy (SHE-DEVIL, POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE & DEATH BECOMES HER), with one prestige drama (THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS) before she decided it was time for becoming an... action hero? We are still in the midst of Streep's most fascinating period (she would next romance Clint Eastwood in the brilliant BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY). Curtis Hanson (director of LA CONFIDENTIAL) was a master of the mid-budget studio thriller at the time of The River Wild. Once Streep was on board with Hanson, a crack cast around her quickly followed (Kevin Bacon, John C. Reilly, David Strathairn, that one kid from Jurassic Park, a heroic dog, and Benjamin Bratt). It all makes for a relatively satisfying early 90s mid-budget studio thriller about a couple of convicts taking a river guide (Streep) and her family hostage on a river-bound getaway through some gnarly rapids she has a deadly history with. It IS a ridiculous premise but Hanson, to his credit, along with Streep giving more than a script like this deserves, make it work. The River Wild was filmed in a few different location but most of the sedate or passable rapid river scenes were shot in Southern Oregon on the wild and scenic portion of the Rogue River. Co-host Ken and special guest Erik (of the pod Blood and Popcorn) lived in the area at the time and discuss both the river and working at a movie theater when the film was being made AND having most of the stars come through at one point or another. It is always a peculiar thing when Hollywood invades a small town. There is also a quiz about the movie! Usually we do two movies in an episode but we didn't have any Streep-as-action-hero movies to pair this with. We all eagerly await Streep to show up as Commander Azmatron Eleven (first introduced in the classic Kree-Skrull War, Avengers Annual #6 to be exact) in the MCU so she can be in another action movie and we can have a Streep action figure!*THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096*there is no such character and we all pray Streep never steps into a green closet to shoot a cameo in a shitty superhero movie, It would tarnish her crown

BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY & ADAPTATION - STREEPEAT A first for our podcast! Join us as we rewatch two movies we originally talked about during seasons focussed on Clint Eastwood and Nicolas Cage (boo, patriarchy!) but wisely shift our focus to Meryl Streep. We are joined by Shannon this week to discuss the books both movies were based on! 1995's BRIDGE'S OF MADISON COUNTY co-stars and was directed by Clint Eastwood, covered at length in S1-S3. This was during Eastwood's 1990s streak of great movies and Bridges is up there with his best. Streep, at 45, was deemed too old by the studio to play romantic lead with Eastwood, WHO WAS 65 at the time (boo, patriarchy!!). Luckily Eastwood was able to get her on board and, together, make one of the quietest, devastating romances of the time. Eastwood wisely cut out a lot of his big moments and lets the film, and viewers, fall in love with Streep's character and the low key easy rhythms of an isolated farm house in the 1960s. Streep owns the movie and you can feel Eastwood, the director, being 100% okay with it. In 2002's ADAPTATION (originally covered in our S4 premiere of Cage Uncaged) Streep plays real-life author Susan Orlean, whose article-then-book THE ORCHID THIEF is given to screenwriter Charlie Kauffman to adapt. Meta antics ensue. It's hard not to focus on Cage playing identical twins or Chris Cooper in an even showier role, but Streep grounds the movie in a way it might not succeed had Orlean been played by an actress with less finesse. We all get a ton of background on what in the book was not used and, what, surprisingly, was in the book, by Shannon. To wrap up our month on mothers at the movies we have to do a bit of homewrecking. And there is no better person to do it than Clint Eastwood as he shows up at Meryl Streep's door with a camera in hand and many notches on his belt. And while so far these show notes have leaned into comfortable sarcasm, prepare yourself dear listener for discomfort as two middle-aged men share their love over this film that they would never admit to seeing before.Thankfully no one listens to this podcast. In episode sixty-six of movies imo., Ben, Brandon, and Daniel yell over each other about Clint Eastwood's swan song (until the next swan song) THE MULE. They also discuss two more Clint directed-Clint starring opuses with MILLION DOLLAR BABY and THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. Ben celebrates Meryl for taking love into her own hands and driving to Des Moines for a new dress, Daniel appreciates the ways in which this patriarchal icon processes shame through sensitivity, and Brandon nails the easygoing high-pitched cadence of Clint's crotchety botanist.
