So, is homework still a thing in 2026 or is it time to let kids just be kids? And, a viral post by Jana Barrett has the internet talking about the invisible labor behind every successful man. He got the trophy, she got the school run. It has us asking, do we all deserve a medal for carrying the mental load? In this week's episode of Medicine: The Truth, hosts Jeremy Corr and Dr. Robert Pearl unpack a wide range of developments shaping healthcare in America today, including the TrumpRx drug discount program. From new legislation affecting telehealth and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to the rapid spread of measles and growing public concern about vaccine policy, this month's discussion highlights the policy decisions and scientific debates influencing medicine right now. The episode opens with the latest federal legislation passed to avert a government shutdown. While healthcare was not the central focus of this particular political battle, the bill contains several provisions that affect medical practice. These include extensions for telehealth coverage and hospital-at-home programs, reforms targeting PBM transparency and new requirements designed to address “ghost networks” in Medicare Advantage provider directories. Dr. Pearl explains that while these provisions represent incremental progress, they are unlikely to solve the larger problems driving healthcare costs and access challenges in the United States. Here are the other major storylines from episode 104: Healthcare costs remain nation's top concern: A new KFF poll finds that healthcare expenses rank above food, housing and utilities as the economic issue Americans worry about most. Prior authorization frustrations grow: Many patients report delays or denials of care due to insurance requirements, highlighting persistent tension between insurers, physicians and patients. Drug pricing debates continue: Pearl examines a new prescription drug website initiative and explains why it may have limited impact compared with broader policy proposals such as “most favored nation” pricing. Telehealth's uncertain future: Although the latest legislation extends certain pandemic-era flexibilities, the lack of a permanent solution leaves virtual care programs in limbo. PBM reforms move forward slowly: New policies aim to increase transparency and reduce incentives tied to drug list prices, though Pearl notes that meaningful change will depend on future implementation. Site-neutral payment gains attention: A provision requiring unique identifiers for outpatient services could pave the way for policies that eliminate higher reimbursement for hospital-owned facilities providing identical care. Measles outbreaks surge: Nearly a thousand cases have already been reported in 2026, with the overwhelming majority occurring among unvaccinated children. Trust in the CDC declines: Polling shows confidence in the agency has dropped significantly following changes to vaccine recommendations. Independent vaccine review groups emerge: Medical organizations and states are forming new committees to evaluate vaccine evidence as federal guidance becomes more contested. Early colon cancer deaths rise: The death of actor James Van Der Beek at age 48 highlights the growing incidence of colorectal cancer among younger adults and the importance of earlier screening. FDA confusion over a new flu vaccine: The agency initially declined to review Moderna's mRNA-based flu vaccine before reversing course and agreeing to evaluate it ahead of the next flu season. Younger Americans face worsening health trends: New claims data suggest chronic disease is appearing earlier among millennials and Gen Z, driven by lifestyle factors and reduced connection to primary care. Wearable data reveal health disparities: Apple Watch data show significant differences in resting heart rates across states, reflecting variations in lifestyle, access to care and public health conditions. As the episode concludes, Dr. Pearl warns that growing political conflict around vaccines and biomedical research risks undermining public trust in science. The consequences, he argues, could shape American medicine for decades to come. Tune in for more fact-based analysis and discussion of the biggest stories in healthcare. * * * Dr. Robert Pearl is the author of the new book “ChatGPT, MD: How AI-Empowered Patients & Doctors Can Take Back Control of American Medicine” about the impact of AI on the future of medicine. March is back, and that means we're leaning into the mess with the return of Love Stinks! Month - our annual deep dive into the "Not-So-Love-Love-Stories" that make us cringe, cry, and question everything. We're kicking things off with the ultimate manifesto for the death of romance: Roger Avary's 2002 chaotic collegiate trip, The Rules of Attraction. Grab a drink try our Emotional Vampire cocktail - as we head to Camden College, where the only thing more plentiful than the drugs is the total lack of genuine connection. This week, we tackle the polarized reactions between us, as Mackenzie struggles with the film's relentless nihilism while Lemar holds onto his nostalgia for this mid-aughts time capsule. We examine James Van Der Beek's aggressive pivot away from Dawson's Creek as the "sexual vampire" Sean Bateman, Shannyn Sossamon's doomed pining for the absent Victor, and Ian Somerhalder's heartbreakingly misdirected search for intimacy as Paul Denton. We also break down the film's flashy, hyper-stylized techniques—from the famous split-screen hallway encounter to the dizzying European montage—and debate whether the movie's bone-deep cynicism is a truthful portrait of youth or just "directorial masturbation."If you've ever loved someone who didn't even know you existed, or if you just want to hear us argue about whether these characters are "horrible people" or just tragically human, this is the episode for you. We're mixing our conflicting perspectives with our usual casual banter, making this a perfectly messy start to our month of cinematic heartaches. Just remember: at Camden, the party never ends, even when the romance is long dead. This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. AI and the future of journalism In February, "Ideastream Explores: Artificial Intelligence" covered the myriad ways AI is rapidly evolving and changing our lives. It's impacting how students learn, reshaping the workforce, and we're learning more and more about the environmental costs of data centers and the massive processing power needed for generative AI programs. Ideastream hosted a "Sound of Ideas Community Tour" at the Idea Center and took part in another live event as well, about the intersection of journalism and artificial intelligence and concerns the public has about how we might be using it and what guardrails we're setting in place. The Akron Press Club has pulled together a panel today to talk about the choices newsroom are making and what the next generation of journalists are being taught about AI. Guests: - Andrew Meyer, Deputy Editor, Ideastream Public Media - Phil Trexler, Editor-in-Chief, The Marshall Project - Cleveland - Mizell Stewart, Professor-in-Residence, Kent State University Colorectal Cancer Rates Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer deaths among people younger than 50 in the United States, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. The recent deaths of actors James Van Der Beek and Catherine O'Hara have brought renewed attention to the disease. While most cases still occur in people over 50, rates among younger adults are rising. Screening guidelines from the American Cancer Society adopted in 2018 now recommend that average-risk adults begin screening at 45 instead of 50. Colorectal cancer is highly treatable when detected early, and experts say screening options, including colonoscopies and at-home stool tests, are saving lives. Guests: - Joshua Sommovilla, M.D., Colon and Rectal Surgical Oncologist, Cleveland Clinic - Mengdan Xie, M.D., Gastroenterology, MetroHealth - Amy Fogerty, Teacher, Shaker Heights High School

It's one of those weeks where the headlines feel uncomfortably close to home. Between James Van Der Beek's death from colorectal cancer and Eric Dane's ALS diagnosis, it's hard not to think about your own health and mortality. So we brought on our friend Mickey Rapkin — journalist, author, former GQ editor, and yes, the guy who wrote Pitch Perfect before it became a major studio franchise. In August 2025, Mickey's older brother Jon died from brain cancer. We talk about sibling loss (aka the worst club), the sacred inside jokes, the random movie lines that become part of your daily language, and how grief rewires you on a cellular level. We also get into Mickey's Men's Health piece about cancer screenings — the big question of how much do you want to know, what testing can (and can't) do, and why “control is an illusion” is both depressing and… oddly clarifying. Today, if you’re an Australian with even a drop of British or Irish blood, Amelia has a warning that might cost you hundreds of dollars. And, is it okay for celebrities to ask us for money? After the deaths of millennial TV icons James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane, their families have started GoFundMe campaigns — and not everyone’s happy about it. Holly, Jessie, and Amelia have very different takes on whether it’s okay to solicit for donations when you live on a multi-million dollar ranch. Also, the new Married At First Sight villain,Tyson has landed. Jessie thinks his quest for a 'submissive' woman and his 'manosphere' vibes reflect what women are dealing with out in the dating world. While Holly‘s pearls are clutched about the podcast he’s doubtless going to start when he leaves the show. So, ‘should’ this man be on primetime TV? Plus, a listener dilemma we can’t stop talking about. Vanessa is overwhelmed, over-worked, and considering quitting her job because her husband’s 'big career' has left her doing 100 percent of the heavy-lifting at home. Jessie says "life is long, just quit," while Holly is asking: if every woman is making the 'choice' to scale back, is it actually a choice at all?Plus, we deep dive into PHAARC — the probably not real (but very relatable) 'medical' condition currently ruining your work life.
