Sophie Wilde's work in Talk to Me is the epitome of a “breakout performance.” Not only did the film go from Sundance darling to one of the biggest smash hits of 2023, but Wilde herself received the praise she deserved for an incredibly demanding and exceptionally well executed lead performance. In fact, Wilde's work as Mia is one of the main reasons why Talk to Me is so much more than a cool horror movie with a super creative high concept. Yes, the A24 acquisition delivers big when it comes to the thrill of watching a group of naive teenagers willingly becoming possessed via the now-iconic hand, but much of the movie's depth comes from how Mia's grief makes her susceptible to losing herself in the midst of this sinister high.In addition to being showered with critical praise and winning Best Lead Actress in Film at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, Wilde just scored one of the most coveted honors for a newcomer in this industry. She was nominated for the BAFTA's EE Rising Star Award alongside Phoebe Dynevor, Ayo Edebiri, Jacob Elordi, and Mia McKenna-Bruce. Win or lose, the nomination alone is a significant achievement, one that often signals a long, illustrious career to come.In celebration of that nomination, Wilde joined me for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to revisit some of her early steps in the industry and to recap her journey with Talk to Me. This week on Tuesday January 30th the theatre community lost two very important and influential members Chita Rivera & Hinton Battle. Today we turn our focus to Ms. Rivera who was not only a multi awarding artists (including two Tony Awards for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Drama League Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom) but also a performer who was the consummate professional who worked tirelessly at her craft and lit up the stage with her dazzling charisma and incredible dancing. She was a true trailblazer whether it was through her origination of many iconic stage roles like Anita in West Story, Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie, Velma Kelly in Chicago, Anna in The Rink or Aurora in Kiss of the Spiderwoman or through her accolades including being the first Latina and the first Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honor in 2002. She was someone who continually inspired and mentored so many artists and had one of the most infectious laughs that could fill up any room she was in or an stage she was on. Chita Rivera was a true old school Broadway artist who kept their head down and focused on their work and we will certainly not see the likes of her again any time soon. So in honour of her passing we are revisiting our episode on Bye Bye Birdie which is the musical she earned her first Tony nomination for. We will also dive deeper into her work this season when we tackle Kiss of the Spiderwoman in a few weeks. But for now listen and enjoy this special tribute to a one of a kind artist. Mary Kate's affinity for music started when she was a baby. Her parents quickly learned there was no other way to get her to fall asleep in her car seat without playing hymns. Mary Kate auditioned and landed the role of Young Cosette in a local high school production of "Les Misérables" when she was 8. The show went on to be nominated for a National Theater Award and the cast had the opportunity to perform on the Kennedy Center Stage. Since then, Mary Kate has continued musical theater and even won a National Youth Arts Award for Best Lead Actress for the role of Ariel in "The Little Mermaid." Now, Mary Kate is more interested in being a singer-songwriter than being on a Broadway stage.

[ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 1970 and the nominees are: 1. Maggie Smith - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie 2. Genevieve Bujold - Anne of the Thousand Days 3. Jane Fonda - They Shoot Horses, Don't They? 4. Liza Minnelli - The Sterile Cuckoo 5. Jean Simmons - The Happy Ending - In 1970 Maggie Smith won her first of two Oscars for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Smith plays an eccentric schoolteacher in a conservative school during the 1930's in Edinburgh, Scotland. She had won the BAFTA for Best Lead Actress but odds on favourite at the Oscars was Jane Fonda in They Shoot Horses, Don't They. Many speculated she (Fonda) lost this Oscar due to an arrest on Fort Hood military reservation as well as rumours of drug use and adultery had cost her the award. Remember! It was the late 1960's/70's. However Smith delivers an amazing performance in TPOMJB. Liza Minnelli became a first time nominee in The Sterile Cuckoo. A role Judy Garland urged her not to play worried it would make her seem unattractive. I don't agree! Pookie (the character Minnelli plays) is obnoxiously charming! Genevieve Bujold plays Anne Boleyn in Anne of the Thousand Days. A fantastic performance and I would recommend if you enjoy period pieces. Finally, Jean Simmons was nominated for The Happy Ending - a hilarious camp film about a woman who walks out on her family (inexplicably) and struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Luke McFarlane as they discuss.

While we try to make this podcast diverse year-round, we always shine some extra light on black cinema in February and 2021 is no different. For our first episode of Black History Month, we're looking at the films that lead to the first black winners of Best Lead Actor and Best Lead Actress. First we have Sidney Poitier's winning performance in the passion project Lilies of the Field in 1963. It's an incredible, much deserved achievement that serves as a landmark moment in film history. Then we have the 2001 indie film Monster's Ball that gave us a slew of great performances, but none as powerful as Halle Berry's portrayal of Leticia. Berry won for this performance and herself made history as the first black actress to do so. Enjoy!
Episode 23 of The Blank Canvas with Kat Stewart. Making a career in the performing arts is notoriously challenging but in this case the cream has certainly risen to the top. Kat Stewart's searing performance as Roberta Williams in the iconic first TV series of UNDERBELLY, planted her into our collective consciousness. Kat received both the 2008 AFI Award for Best Lead Actress and the 2009 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Actress. Whether comedy, drama or anything in between, the incredible performances and accolades have followed ever since, however Kat is probably best known for her AACTA Award winning portrayal of Billie Proudman in the TV phenomenon - Offspring. Aside from being a lovely human and charming conversationalist, this is an inspiring career change story; Kat completed a degree in marketing and arts and was working as full time publicist for publisher Penguin Books. Unable to shake the acting bug from some university theatre she dabbled in, she studied acting at night after work for 3 years, eventually getting her confidence up to taking the plunge into that arena. "There are some people that have just driven by an innate self-belief, I'm driven by a lot of self doubt, but it means that I work really hard because I do think that I can fail at any second. You know, every time I take on a job, I think, oh shit. I don't know if I can pull this off. Every character you starting from ground zero, but in a way that's the greatest thing, the fear and the trepidation is a respect for the task at hand.” Kat’s latest hit TV series is FIVE BEDROOMS which is produced by Hoodlum. Series Two is returning to Network 10 in 2021. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1830811/ https://www.instagram.com/kat_stewy/ W: https://theblankcanvaspodcast.com.au/ W: https://leerogers.com.au/ SOCIALS Insta: @theblankcanvaspodcast FB - The Blank Canvas Podcast Twitter: @blankcanvaspod THE BLANK CANVAS TEAM Produced by Lee Rogers & Rien MacDonald. On this episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, on the Broadway Podcast Network, I am recording at The Houdini Museum in NYC with writer, actress, and singer Laiona Michelle. After a triumphant debut in 2018 at the George Street Playhouse, of Laiona's original musical Little Girl Blue - The Nina Simone Musical, Laiona Michelle will be returning to George Street Playhouse for a one-night only concert to celebrate Black History Month & Women's History Month, paying special tribute to the life and music of the High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone. The evening will feature some of Nina's most iconic hits including "Feeling Good," "My Baby Just Cares," and "Little Girl Blue" + a selection of Broadway classics. ***Due to COVID-19 Pandemic An Evening with Laiona Michelle has been postponed. As soon as a new date is announced, I will post it here along with a ticket link.*** Laiona & I also discuss the projected 2021 NYC premiere of her original musical Little Girl Blue - The Nina Simone Musical as well as the development of her Broadway-bound original musical Mandela, a new musical developed in partnership with the Mandela Family, music & lyrics by brothers, Greg Dean Borowsky and Shaun Borowsky, and book by Laiona Michelle. Prior to her Broadway debut, Laiona had been on the road, cast in the first national tour of the musical, Book of Mormon, which won nine Tony Awards in 2011. Laiona’s passion as an actor took a different turn during the run of Amazing Grace, which was written by a first-time playwright. That story captivated the writer’s side of her. And what began with a thought, turned to obsession, and led to a re- discovery of her writing skills, one she now continues to perfect. In 2018, Little Girl Blue – The Nina Simone Musical made its way to the George Street Playhouse, where it had a limited run engagement and played to sold-out audiences, standing ovations and stellar reviews. She has since been commissioned by the Mandela estate to collaborate on a new, Broadway bound, Mandela Musical, based on the South African activist, imprisoned for 27-years, and who was eventually released to become that nation’s president. The musical features music and lyrics by Shaun and Greg Dean Borowsky, and book by Laiona Michelle. It is being produced in partnership with the Mandela family itself, and is scheduled for a New York theatrical – date to be announced. As an actor, she has been nominated for a number of awards including the Independent Reviewers of New England, Best Lead Actress award (2001, Stonewall Jackson’s House), Laiona is the recipient of the Barrymore and Carbonell Awards (2004, Constant Star), The NAACP Hollywood award (2005, Constant Star) and she was nominated for the Helen Hayes Award (2005, Yellowman). In addition to her stage work, Laiona has also made appearances on network and cable television in Showtime’s Lift, ABC’s All My Children, NBC’s Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: CI, The Blacklist as well as Amazon’s, Sneaky Pete (Bryan Cranston and Giovanni Ribisi).

How do you become "good" at editing and what makes editing worthy of an Academy Award Nomination? Does this week's film have a satisfying ending? Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a 2017 drama film written, directed, and produced by Martin McDonagh and edited by: Jon Gregory starring Frances McDormand as a woman who rents three billboards to call attention to her daughter's unsolved rape and murder. It was released in the United States in November 2017 and in the United Kingdom in January 2018 by Fox Searchlight Pictures and grossed $159 million worldwide. SCENE: https://youtu.be/3rilXPF0tYY The film received widespread acclaim, particularly for McDormand and Rockwell's performances and McDonagh's screenplay. McDonagh won a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award for his original screenplay, while the film also won the Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award for Best Picture.
Anderson Cowan (center) at the FILA 2019 Q&A for "Groupers" At Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2019, the feature film Groupers took home four awards; including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actor. But it also has substance; substance without being preachy. In fact, it has so much substance that during this interview I completely forgot to talk to him about all the impressive stylish elements he worked into the movie. When the weather's fine, we've got summer blockbusters on our mind. We've created sixteen categories, such as Best Soundtrack, Surprise Hit, Biggest Letdown, Most Mind-Blowing Visual Effects, Best Lead Actress and, yes, Greatest of All Time. Kent and Joel probably stressed about their answers more than they should have, and they're worried about giving too many "primary answers," but we hope you enjoy this episode all about some of the biggest movies in cinematic history. Pop some popcorn, shut off your brain a little and press play to hear this explosion-fueled, CGI-laden episode of Baconsale!
Wade and Siggy took extra time to make this episode worth the wait, as they deliver their rundown of the best nominees for Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Lead Actor, and Best Lead Actress, with an extended discussion of Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman. And don't miss the appearance of some surprise celebrity guests. Only one more part to go after this!

Apologies, but we’ll get you our Super Bowl Trailer reactions and that Oscar Race Update after the DGAs, ACE Eddies, Annie’s, and ADGs in an upcoming pod, perhaps of the old school MMO Hollywood Hot Takes variety. So stay tuned for that. Until then, he’s a category overview of Best Animated Feature. This breakdown of Best Animated Feature makes our 4th of probably 9 category reviews we’ll do before the final curtain falls on Oscar night. We’ve already looked at Best Original Song, Best Supporting Actor, & Best Lead Actress, and the two other acting categories, director, and of course, Best Picture are still on our to do list. In any event, it’ll be hard to believe another category unearths more intrigue than Best Animated Feature. Mike 1 has been peddling a conspiracy theory around the MMO streets like the world’s about to end and only he knows it. So today is the day, we finally let him step up to that soapbox and preach his apocalyptic nightmare to the masses. Will you hear him out? Or like Me (Also Mike), just laugh him out of the room? The choice is yours. As usual, we continue our discussion of the snubs of Oscar, and we lead off the episode with some possible snubs of this category. Then we argue for and against the chances of victory for each before giving our own top 5 ranking to finish the episode. It’s an oratorical exercise meant only for the strange. But we aren’t exactly normal, if you haven’t noticed, and if you have, then hopefully that’s why you continue to tune into the show. We hope you’ve been enjoying all our coverage of the final weeks of awards season. MMO Weekly will continue to keep you up to date, our interviews will help you pick the minds of entertainment pros, and as usual, we’ll try to preview & review whatever movies you watch or might ever wanna watch. Let us know what you think. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook Reddit, and Gmail. You can rate / review / comment / like / share / subscribe & listen to our show on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Tune In, Google Play, Spotify, and just about wherever you find podcasts. ***This is a Spoiler Free Episode*** It’s our 2017-18 Best Actress Overview, and we avoid all spoilers. Twitter Update at MMandOscar - 2:49 WHY SHE’LL LOSE/WHY SHE’LL WIN THE 2017/18 BEST ACTRESS OSCAR: Sally Hawkins - 4:29 Frances McDormand - 10:30 Margot Robbie - 15:39 Saoirse Ronan - 23:34 Meryl Streep - 28:49 Perfecting Perfection - 34:30 Final Thoughts - 41:41 Here’s our overview of this year’s Best Actress category. The format is simple. We make the case against and for each of the 5 nominees. Then we rank them in a segment we’ve pompously entitled, Perfecting Perfection. We begin as usual with a lousy song and dance number, but don’t worry because we attempt something those in the business call “banter?” Idk, we give that a try. The Best Actress race poses some tough questions. Does the cast of The Shape of Water steal too many scenes away from Sally Hawkins? Isn’t Frances McDormand the on & offscreen badass we want giving the Best Actress acceptance speech THIS of all years? Has Oscar History already doomed Margot Robbie’s chances? When has Mike No. 1 laughed the hardest this year? It was in Lady Bird? (Wow!!! Must be a good movie.) And of course, the question we’re all asking this award season. Does Meryl Streep’s Darth Vader helmet of a wig disqualify her performance in The Post? Or should Mike No. 1 put a shock collar on his co-host to stop him from pointing out hair & make-up blunders in Hollywood movies? We answer all these questions and more. Do please follow us on Twitter at MMandOscar . The BAFTA awards are next Sunday night. The Indie Spirits come along a few weeks later. We’ll be LIVE tweeting those. Plus, you’ll get some serious GIF game (if I do say so myself) (Imagine I just GIF’d you a man patting himself on his own back. You’re welcome.) We’re also on Facebook, Instagram, reddit, America Online, Napster, and MySpace. So we’re with it AND hip. Please follow, subscribe, like, poke, share, retweet, repost, and/or if you have a few minutes, do please leave a positive review. Best of all though is the old fashioned word of mouth. Tell a few friends or relatives about the pod if and when you can. We so appreciate all your help. We’re growing, and we love doing this. So it’s early days, but we enjoy interacting with the people as often as possible, and it’s been a blast watching this little show of ours find an audience. The next few weeks will include more Category Review pods including the Best Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Director, and Picture. Go back and listen to our Oscar Sprint Profile series where we review each of these movies in detail, and do stay tuned for another movie event where we’ll cover Marvel and Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. The news of the world can be a drag because reality can suck. So as we like to say, watch some movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
This episode, Rob and Mike talk about the lead acting categories. They make their predictions for Best Leading Actress and Bead Leading Actor, and also discuss some performances they wish were nominated. Play or download the episode here.
This week, two of our favorite Bullseye guests. First up: Ellie Kemper, star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. If you haven't seen it, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has a pretty unusual premise. A woman emerges from a mid-western bunker. She's been held captive there by a cultish kidnapper. She and her fellow captives are national news. So, she moves to New York, the one place she can think of where no one will care. The mix of characters and dense, super joke filled pace has earned Kimmy love from critics and a bunch of Emmy nominations - Ellie's up for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series this year. Then, Flying Lotus. Jesse talked with the musician back in 2010, he'd just released his third record, Los Angeles. Born Steven Ellison, he was at the head of a burgeoning beatmaking scene here in LA that would eventually leave a huge, lasting impact on pop and hip hop. Over the course of five records, dozens of collaborations, FlyLo has created lush, kind of psychedelic soundscapes. It's a little disorienting sometimes, but it's always gripping. Now, Ellison's directed his first ever film. It's called "Kuso," and it's probably one of the most intense, and frankly gross, movies to come out in the last few decades.
Today's Guest: Neal Baer, executive producer "Law & Order: SVU" Law & Order SVU Ultimate Collection Seasons 1-15, Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni. Order your copy today by clicking on the DVD set above! The Law & Order television franchise has passed through numerous stages over its two decades on the air at NBC. There was innovation, as in the split show format of the original; shock, as in the horrible nature of some of the crimes depicted; expansion, as in the addition of series such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”; ubiquity, as in, “isn’t there anything on besides these doggone crime shows”; and, finally, respect, as in Mariska Hargitay winning the 2006 Emmy Award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Neal Baer, showrunner, Law and Order: SVU Kill Switch by Neal Baer and Jonathan Greene, Mr. Media Interviews NEAL BAER podcast excerpt: "The secret of the show's success? I think it's the teaming of Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni. I think they're the longest running team in drama; Ozzie & Harriet beat them in comedy—they ran for 14 years. They've got great chemistry. Chris represents the rage we feel about the crimes and Mariska represents the empathy we feel toward the victims." That’s all the stuff that you and my wife see when you watch hour after hour of “Law & Order.” But what goes on behind the scenes? That’s what I hope to discover from today’s guest, Dr. Neal Baer, the executive producer of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Dr. Baer is a real medical doctor with a degree from Harvard; he interned at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles and, more germane to a discussion of TV, he was on the original writing staff of “ER,” eventually rising to the position of executive producer.
