Infected by her mom's love for Broadway shows, Ilana was introduced to the world of theatre at an early age. After getting a haircut by one of the most handsome people she's ever seen when she was 18 years old, she ended up at his acting studio in New York and walked into a room of people performing a private moment exercise, which changed everything in her life from that moment on, including her college major. Chance after chance, and with the luck of being surrounded by other talented people, Ilana highlights the importance of having an artistic community where you can "fail beautifully over and over again." Apart from acting, Ilana also entered the podcast universe in 2016. According to her supportive friends, there's something about her that makes it easy for people to open up about all sorts of things. Today, she hosts a couple of podcast shows, which to her have become a great avenue and a safe space for people to share stories, and complex issues. This, and her love for creating art with others, tie in neatly with what motivates her in life: connecting. How can you stop waiting for permission and lead a community, a company, or a movement with confidence? How do you stay true to yourself and your dreams, when people say “no” more often than they say “yes” to you?  And how can we stop wasting our talents, our time, and our energy so we can truly make an impact on the world? To answer these questions, I invited my friend, Broadway actress and podcast host, Ilana Levine to My Good Woman. Her podcast, Little Known Facts, gives people space to share their magnificence - because if there's one thing Ilana excels at, it's helping people unlock their true potential. Ilana has a gift for making her podcast guests and listeners feel at home because her conversations are unfiltered, raw, honest, and so freaking funny! And today the shoe is on the other foot. She's in MY digital living room. How to hold on to the certainty that what you have to offer is unique and special - when many people are in your way. [12:45] Why women sometimes feel they need permission to do what they love (and how much talent, time and energy is wasted by that)[23:07] Things that make your life move and work more smoothly: outsourcing what you don't like to do.  [39:45] Ilana looks at herself as a “producer”: someone who's in charge of figuring out how to give everyone they work or live with the tools to bring out the best in them. [46:40] Why we need to own our roles as leaders - and how that starts at home, with our family and our community. (and the introduction of hashtag #uniquequal)[50:52] The message Ilana would put on her Times Square billboard: “Believe!” We need to believe that we have every right to have our voices heard and ideas shared. It's time to finish that "book report" on "Edgar Allan Poe" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1971's You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown and 1982's Snoopy! The Musical on episode seventeen of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN Based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz in his comic strip Peanuts, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown shares the story of a day in the life of everybody's favorite blockhead, Charlie Brown. The musical features music and lyrics by Clark Gesner and a book by John Gordon. Following an unprecedented run of 1,597 performances off-Broadway, the musical finally opened to mixed reviews on The Great White Way on June 1, 1971 and closed 32 performances later. Many critics had felt that much of its original charm had evaporated during the transfer. Despite that, the musical became a popular staple in the amateur theater market and is known as one of the most beloved musicals of all time. In 1998, a significantly revised version of the musical set out on a national tour before opening on Broadway the following year. It featured new dialogue by Michael Mayer, who also directed, and additional songs and orchestration written by composer Andrew Lippa. The character of Patty was replaced with Sally Brown, inspired by the same change Schulz made in the animated TV adaptation in the 1980s. The cast featured Anthony Rapp as Charlie Brown, B.D. Wong as Linus, Ilana Levine as Lucy, and Stanley Wayne Mathis as Schroeder. Also featured were Kristin Chenoweth and Roger Bart as Sally and Snoopy, with each winning the Tony award in the respective category. Despite its Tony wins, the musical failed to gain an audience and closed after just 149 performances.   Original Broadway Cast Dean Stolber as Charlie Brown Liz O'Neal as Lucy Stephen Fenning as Linus Carter Cole as Schroeder Lee Wilson as Patty Grant Cowan as Snoopy ABOUT SNOOPY! THE MUSICAL An official sequel to You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Snoopy! The Musical shares the story of a day in the life of everybody's favorite beagle, Snoopy. The musical features music by Larry Grossman, lyrics by Hal Hackady, and a book by Warren Lockhart, Arthur Whitelaw, and Michael Grace. Despite You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown's Broadway failure in 1971, it had already become a worldwide sensation, and producer Arthur Whitelaw felt that it needed a follow-up. This time, however, he would both write and direct the piece. Snoopy! The Musical premiered on December 9, 1975 at the Little Fox Theatre in San Francisco, California and, despite mixed reviews, ran for 7 months. The musical was then produced Off-Broadway at the Lamb's Theatre in 1982 starring David Garrison as Snoopy. The show performed 152 performances until it closed on May 1, 1983. The Off-Broadway production received similar reviews to the San Francisco production. Later, when Lorna Luft replaced Peppermint Patty, a new song was written for her, entitled "Hurry Up, Face". This song was used in later productions, including the West End later that year. The 1983 West End production was a critically acclaimed success and ran for 479 performances. A revised version of Snoopy! The Musical opened Texas State University in 2017 with a new song co-written by Andrew Lippa and restored material that had been cut from previous versions of the show. This version, now called The World According To Snoopy, is available to license alongside the original.   Original Off-Broadway Cast David Garrison as Snoopy Terry Kirwin as Charlie Brown Vicki Lewis as Peppermint Patty Kay Cole as Lucy Stephen Fenning as Linus Deborah Graham as Sally Brown Cathy Cahn as Woodstock

The first Tony Awards ceremony took place on Easter Sunday in 1947. It was a small affair where awards were handed out to notable artists of the day. Some of the winners that evening included actress, Patricia Neal and playwright, Arthur Miller. The ceremony was not televised and took place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The first awards handed out were a money clip for the men and a make up compact for the women. It took many years until it took the form of an actual award and the only award that spins! Since 2011 Heather Hitchens has been the President and CEO of The American Theater Wing. She herself is an accomplished drummer who started out at a local radio station and then later went into arts management. She counts many women mentors in her life who gave her the confidence to take on leadership roles in the world of arts organizations which is how her career in the arts began at the age of 24. “The arts is the only sector that I know of that lifts up every sector that it touches.” Heather Hitchens. Tonya Pinkins had a very complicated journey with the musical Jelly's Last Jam. From the very beginning she felt she was up against a cast that was not happy that she was replacing the original Anita in the show, she was away from home with her nine month old baby and in rehearsal she found herself holding back. But at night she would dream of what the role could be. She wanted to bring the power and vulnerability she remembered so well about her grandmother to the role but it wasn't until the final run thru that she was able to bring all her ideas and show the cast and creative team what she could really do. Tonya shares that she was almost fired multiple times- even when she was in rehearsal for the Broadway production- but somehow she persevered and she won a Tony Award for her portrayal of this raw, powerful and vulnerable woman. Ruben Santiago-Hudson had dreamed of being in an August Wilson from the first time he was in the audience of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He found himself crying during the play and realized he was not just deeply moved by the play and the actors in it but the tears were connected to this feeling that for the first time in his life he was seeing people on stage who were so familiar to him and he wanted to be a part of that kind of storytelling. It took a few tries but finally he was cast in Wilson’s Seven Guitars and that began a brotherhood and an artistic marriage between Ruben and the great playwright that lasted until the death of August Wilson. It was Wilson who encouraged Ruben not just to act in his work but to be one of the few artists he trusted to direct his work. Since then Ruben has directed his plays on Broadway and adapted Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for the screen. This is an artistic relationship that will be a part of theater history. When Ilana, host of AND THE AWARD GOES TO.. had the privilege of talking to John Benjamin Hickey - the winner of The Tony Award for The Normal Heart- it was the day after Larry Kramer had died so it was so timely and beautiful to have this conversation while John was still processing this news.  John first came to the role of Felix Turner in a  reading  for charity directed by Joel Grey.  The reading was so successful that very quickly a production was mounted this time directed by George C. Wolfe. His friend Joe Mantello encouraged John  to take on the role for the original reading with neither of them ever imagining that as best friends they would go on to be such glorious and devastating scene partners in the play when it  went to Broadway. With only ten days of rehearsal the play was mounted for a full Broadway production with the original idea that different actors would play the roles with a rotating cast perhaps even with scripts in hand but then a few of the actors started to learn the lines very quickly and it evolved into a more traditional production with Ellen Barkin, Jim Parsons and an all star cast. Plus … some incredible words of wisdom shared by the great  director, Mike Nichols. Hosted by Ilana Levine, Produced by Alan Seales, part of the Broadway Podcast Network. That love of performing a song became her obsession and then she found Broadway! She dreamed of being a professional actress and of one day winning a Tony Award. Sure- lots of people practice their speech in the bathroom mirror but Nikki is one of those extraordinary talents who actually made it happen. Losing her father at a young age made her all the more focused and devoted to her craft and then a play reading when she was still in high school was the beginning of something that would change her life forever even though she didn’t know it at the time. Her performance in that reading stayed with one audience member- Bobby Lopez ( one of the creators of The Book Of Mormon) and many years later when they were casting for the workshop of the show he thought Nikki would be a great fit. n 2012, Little Known Facts host Ilana Levine got a call that her dear friend Susan was in a horrible car accident. Her car had literally been crushed by a Los Angeles city bus that had driven head on into Susan's car. Her 12 year old daughter who had been in the passenger seat walked out of the car unharmed but Susan was trapped inside. Almost every bone in her body was broken including her neck, she had bleeding on her brain and her lungs had collapsed. One of life's biggest clichés became a horrific reality when Douglas Segal, Susan's husband, showed up at the scene. Following the accident, Doug began sending regular email updates to their circle of friends and family—a list that continued to grow as others heard of the event and were moved by the many emotional and spiritual issues it raised. Those emails became the centerpiece of his memoir "Struck" an intimate and honest chronicle built around these email updates, and is a profound example of how people show up for one another in times of crisis and is an uplifting tribute to love, determination, and how the compassion of community holds the power to heal, serving as an inspiring testament to the resilience of the human spirit when faced with pain and adversity. Doug and Susan share the harrowing story of what it took to recover from a near death accident not just physically but emotionally and spiritually and share many of the life lessons learned along the way.

Allison Janney, a seven-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, had dreams of becoming an Olympic figure skater. That dream ended when, at age 17, she ran through a sliding glass window. The injury was serious, and, suddenly Allison's future goals shifted. She found herself at Kenyon College and she became a theater major. While at Kenyon Allison was discovered by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward who had come to the college to direct a play at their alma mater. They encouraged Janney to go to NYC and pursue a career in acting professionally. What happened after that is the subject of this funny and intimate conversation with host Ilana Levine, a dear friend of Allison's. The two met and became fast friends when Ilana was starring in the HBO series "Tanner 88" with a mutual friend. Allison walks us through her audition for "The West Wing" and opens up about why the recent loss of her brother makes starring on the CBS hit show "Mom" all the more important for her during this emotional time. The incredibly versatile Allison Janney has taken her place among a select group of actors who combine a leading lady’s profile with a character actor’s art of performance. Currently starring alongside Anna Faris in the CBS/Chuck Lorre sitcom, “Mom,” Janney also received rave reviews for her turn as ‘Margaret Scully’ on Showtime’s groundbreaking drama “Masters of Sex.” Janney won Emmys for both roles in the same year; a rare feat in Emmy history. She won a second Emmy for “Mom” the following year, bringing her total number of ATAS statues to seven. She was also recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition, Janney has continually taken on movie roles during her hiatus weeks from the sitcom. She’s completed filming “I, Tonya” with Margot Robbie for Miramax Films. Janney also appeared in two of the previous summer’s biggest box office titles: the adorably animated “Minions” and “Spy” with Melissa McCarthy. Prior feature work includes “The Duff,” Jason Bateman’s directorial debut “Bad Words,” the Dreamworks’ animated film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” and “The Way, Way Back” with Steve Carell and Toni Collette. Additionally she co-starred in the much anticipated feature film "The Help" based on the best-selling novel of the same name, winning the Ensemble awards from the Screen Actors Guild, National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics. For her role in Todd Solondz's film "Life During Wartime" she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the Spirit Awards. She received another Spirit Award nomination for her work in the independent feature “Our Very Own,” and starred opposite Meryl Streep in “The Hours,” which received a SAG Award nomination for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. Other feature credits include the Academy Award winning film “American Beauty” (for which she won a SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture) as well as “Nurse Betty,” “How to Deal,” “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “Primary Colors,” “The Ice Storm,” “Six Days Seven Nights,” “The Object of My Affection,” and “Big Night.” On TV, she is renowned for her starring role in the acclaimed NBC series "The West Wing," where she won a remarkable four Emmy Awards and four SAG Awards for her portrayal of White House Press Secretary ‘CJ Cregg.’ She made her Broadway debut in Noel Coward’s “Present Laughter” for which she earned the Outer Critics Circle Award and Clarence Derwent Award. She also appeared in Arthur Miller’s "A View from the Bridge," receiving her first Tony Award nomination and winning the Outer Critics Circle Award as well as the musical "9 to 5," Janney made her return to Broadway earlier this year in the revival of John Guare’s “Six Degrees of Separation."

Simply Designed Life | Business, Lifestyle Design, and Productivity Tips From Women Entrepreneurs and Gamechangers

Have you seen the 2008 movie Yes Man starring Jim Carey who challenges himself to say ‘yes” to everything for an entire year? That movie comes to mind when I think of my latest conversation with actress, voice over artist and fellow podcaster Ilana Levine. Although her case wasn’t as dramatic as Carey’s, one of the things I loved was how open she was to all the possibilities that presented themselves. I think sometimes within the context of busy work and life schedules, there’s this tendency stay on top of our “to do” lists that we forget to also stay present and be open to those serendipitous moments. She had this credo for saying “yes” to whatever came her way (within good reason of course), which then led to some pretty cool opportunities in her business and life! As the summer season opens with plans for travel and all, I hope this inspires a sense of openness and self-discovery in your own journeys.   Who is Ilana? As an actress, Ilana Levine has performed on stage and screen to critical acclaim. She has produced films and plays. She is a wife, daughter, mother and activist. On Broadway, Ilana is best known to musical theater fans for her comedic turn as "Lucy Van Pelt" in the Broadway revival of, You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. Ilana also starred in the Broadway productions of Jake's Women, Wrong Mountain and The Last Night Of Ballyhoo. She has performed on the Tony Awards. As a voice over artist she has done commercials and audio books. She resides in Brooklyn with her husband, actor Dominic Fumusa, her two children, and their dog, Lola. In May of 2016, Levine joined the podcast universe when she began hosting Little Known Facts with Ilana Levine. Quotes from Ilana On the Hollywood guests she interviews: For most of them, their self-worth wasn’t completely tied up in their careers. They were constantly growing as humans. And the other thing I think, and I don't mean to sound hippy dippy about it but I think it's really true now more than ever, people who volunteer, people who spend their time doing things for others in big and small ways truly are the happiest people. (10:45) On being open: I work very hard at listening, you never know where the idea is going to come from, and it can come from a very unlikely source. So just be open. Work hard, be open, and don’t lose your sense of humor. That’s the hugest thing. (18:30) On defining success: I think for me, a life where creativity, love and being of service are all in play. (22:56) What You’ll Learn How she manages both the business and creative sides of her career How she integrates family in her business Her karmic view of treating everyone from all walks of life with kindness as an assistant one day may be the CEO the next A beautiful, daily ritual she practices that was included in actress Molly Ringwald's book and literally involves turning a new leaf Resources and How to Connect: Ilana's website: www.littleknownfactspodcast.com Social Media: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter Other: Look Up Campaign / YouTube Other Listening Options: Individual player or full player view on website: http://lorirochino.com/podcast-2/

To my knowledge, Ilana Levine is the only actor who learned she could sing AFTER she was cast in a Broadway musical. Her path as a performer has been anything but typical, and in her latest incarnation as the host of her own podcast, Little Known Facts With Ilana Levine, she's doing things differently again. Guests Cynthia Nixon, John Slattery, Molly Ringwald, and the like give her the real tea. So, I wanted to hear from Ilana about her inspiration (Gloria Steinem!!), experiences on stage, and how we both ended up in the fraternity of actors who've performed You're A Good, Man Charlie Brown. Maybe you knew this about me? I was a total theatre junkie in high school and college. I acted, I directed. I minored in theatre. I think that if I was more risk-taking I would have pursued acting as a career. But then I just saw LaLa Land...and saw how excruciating the audition process is in Hollywood. I'm not sure I would have lasted long. Ilana Levine is an actress who has appeared in multiple films, plays and TV shows...and the host of a new podcast called Little Known Facts where she interviews fellow performers about their lives, careers and of course all the juicy things you can't just find online about them. Like, did you know that Laura Linney was raised by a single mom in New York and spent her days after school as a latch-key kid? And Matthew Broderick was supposed to star in a breakout role with Sally Field, but then the director of the film passed away and the project never happened.
