This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to review the film adaptation of August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" directed by Malcolm Washington. The film follows the lives of the Charles family as they deal with themes of family legacy and more, in deciding what to do with an heirloom, the family piano. Notions of weighing one's own family history and legacy against sacrificing it to help push forward in meaningful ways is at the core of the story, the hosts discuss their own perspectives in how to balance staying rooted in Black history without remaining stuck there and striving for progress personally and in a larger societal sense. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Corey Hawkins, and Skylar Aleece Smith.

As Brutus waits for Cassius in the rebel camp, he learns from Lucilius that Cassius is not as friendly as he once was. As soon as he arrives, Cassius accuses Brutus of wronging him. Not wanting their soldiers to see them fighting, they withdraw into Brutus's tent to carry out their argument in private. It all comes to an end when Cassius offers his dagger to Brutus and bares his chest for Brutus to kill him. Once they make their peace, Brutus tells Cassius that his wife, Portia, has killed herself by swallowing hot coals. Cassius is shocked and saddened but Brutus insists that they focus on their battle plans. Cassius suggests they wait for Antony and Octavius' armies to exhaust themselves reaching them where they are now but Brutus disagrees, saying they should meet their enemy half way, at Philippi. Cassius gives in. Once alone, Brutus is visited by Caesar's ghost, who tells him they will meet again at Philippi. Brutus wakes his guards but they all say they didn't see anything. He sends word to Cassius to be ready to march ahead of him the next morning. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. For John David Washington, bringing Netflix's The Piano Lesson (November 22) from stage to screen was a family affair. His father, Denzel, produces while his brother, Malcolm, directs the film adaptation of August Wilson's play about the Charles family in 1936 Pittsburgh as they wrestle with selling a family heirloom, a piano descended from ancestors who were slaves. “I don't think you have to be a Black American to relate to this story.” But it wasn't just working with his family that meant something to him. “I'm thinking about Sam [Samuel L.] Jackson, who originated the role in 1987. Michael Potts. LaTanya [Richardson] Jackson. I'm thinking about Stephen [McKinley] Henderson. I'm a part of that now. That gives me so much power and encouragement.” And while “the whale of truth that we're floating along here is the underbelly of the antebellum South, the Jim Crow era,” Washington says the universal messages runs deeper. “If you understand that, we also talk about something else. It's what's so brilliant about August Wilson's work.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Caesar approaches the Temple, noting that the “Ides of March” have come. He refuses to read Artemidorus's warning. Cassius worries their plot has been discovered but Brutus reassures him. As they approach the Temple, Metellus Cimber pleads with Caesar to return her brother, Publius, from banishment. Caesar refuses. Once inside the Temple, the conspirators surround Caesar and stab him to death, proclaiming “Tyranny is dead!” Antony's servant enters and reports that Antony has fled to his house. Brutus invites the conspirators to bathe their hands in Caesar's blood. As a crowd assembles outside the Temple, Antony's servant returns to ask for safe passage for Antony to speak with the assassins. Brutus grants his request. Antony enters and offers his life unless they can justify their actions. Brutus tells him that all will be explained once they've quelled the crowd. Antony shakes hands with each of the conspirators and requests permission to speak at Caesar's funeral. Cassius is reluctant but Brutus agrees, making Antony promise not to speak poorly about them. Once alone with Caesar's body, Antony mourns and vows revenge. Octavius's guard enters to give word that Octavius is on his way to the city. Antony tells him to report to Octavius about what's happened and to warn him not to arrive until they see how things unfold. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Brutus paces in his study, unable to sleep. His wife, Portia, enters and begs him to tell her why he's so troubled. He does his best to comfort her and tells her he'll explain everything later. Caius Ligarius, an ailing Senator, enters to meet with Brutus, who convinces him to join the assassination plot. Caesar has a hard night as well. His wife, Calphurnia, tells him of terrible dreams she's been having about his murder and says they are omens for Caesar not to go out of the house. When Decius arrives to accompany Caesar to the Temple, Caesar explains that he is staying home on account of Calphurnia's dreams. Decius tells him that the blood in Calphurnia's dreams is a symbol of the new life that Caesar gives his followers and that he will be seen as a coward if he stays home. Caesar changes his mind and leaves with Decius and the rest of the conspirators. Elsewhere, a poet and prophet named Artemidorus writes a letter to Caesar warning him to beware, naming all the traitors who are out to get him. He vows to hand Caesar his letter when he passes by. Outside the Temple, Portia frets over the conspiracy that her husband has confided to her. She tells Lucius to go into the Temple and report back to her about what's going on. When the Soothsayer passes, Portia grills her to find out what she's going to tell Caesar. Caska and Cicero meet on a stormy night. Caska trembles at the omens he's seen until Cassius arrives and dispels his fears with the encouragement that they're not alone in fighting tyranny. Cinna nervously joins them, expressing her hope that Brutus will join their conspiracy. Cassius reassures her that Brutus is on board. Later that night, Brutus ruminates at home on the possibility of killing Caesar, deciding that murder is the only way to stop him. His servant, Lucius, announces the arrival of cloaked guests. Brutus welcomes them and Cassius introduces the co-conspirators: Trebonius, Decius Brutus, Caska, Cinna and Metellus Cimber. Together, they plan Caesar's assassination. Cassius suggests that they swear an oath but Brutus says oaths aren't necessary because their plan is noble. They all agree not to include Cicero in their plans. Cassius suggests that they also kill Mark Antony but Brutus advises against it, saying they will appear “too bloody” and that Antony won't be a threat once Caesar is dead. When Cassius worries that Caesar won't come to the Temple, Decius offers to bring him to the Temple herself. Cassius says they'll all go to Caesar's house together instead. Metellus suggests that they include Caius Ligarius in their plans and Brutus agrees, then sends everyone on their way, telling them all to freshen up so their looks won't betray their purposes. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Activists assemble outside the Stadium to celebrate Caesar when they're interrupted by Flavius and Murellus, who challenge them to honor not just one man but all the people who helped in the Movement. Once the group breaks up and moves on, Flavius tells Murellus to help him take down all the posters celebrating Caesar. Inside the stadium, Caesar and his entourage–including his closest friend, Antony, and his wife, Calphurnia–are enjoying the thrills of a drag race when they're interrupted by an old woman who warns Caesar to beware the “Ides of March”. Caesar dismisses the woman and tells his entourage to enjoy the race with him. Cassius and Brutus stay behind and share their honest feelings about Caesar. Cassius tells Brutus he thinks Caesar is weak, spurring Brutus to confess he's uneasy with the way things are going in Rome. As they return from the race, Caesar sees the two men talking and tells Antony he thinks Cassius is dangerous. Brutus pulls Caska aside and asks him for details about what took place at the race. Caska describes how Caesar refused the crown three times when it was offered to him, further endearing him to the crowd. Caska also describes how Caesar “fell down” and foamed at the mouth. Brutus suggests that Caesar must have the “falling sickness” (epilepsy). Cassius says Caesar is not like them. Caska goes on to describe how Flavius and Murellus were punished for pulling down placards and posters celebrating Caesar, warning Cassius and Brutus to watch how they treat him. After Brutus and Caska depart, Cassius muses to himself about how easily Brutus can be manipulated. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Biophilia is more than plants, light and air, it's also about surrounding ourselves with living beings and our living natural world. If we think about it, E.O.Wilson's seminal book, Biophilia celebrates all aspects of our living planet and is a call for that direct connection with nature. Wilson's book examines our inherent connection to living species, the fascination of life, and how other living societal systems can inform our own. In fact, his lifelong interest in ant colonies emphasises this. Creating those moments of intimacy with nature has a really important place in our modern world where there is a disconnect with getting out there. In this wonderful podcast, we speak with Michael Potts, who has spent more than 30 years as a wildlife cameraman, mostly for the BBC in more than 50 countries worldwide on major series including working alongside David Attenborough filming Life of Birds, The Life of Mammals and many programmes in the Natural World series. We discuss the importance of nature connection, why we need to introduce and educate the next generation, and also how audio-visual connection to nature through our TVs and devices is a positive thing and how we could take this one step further and introduce it into our built environment. “If you see something and understand it, then you care about it, then you might do something to protect it and encourage other people to do the same.” The messaging, inspiration and education you experience through wildlife films inspire people, and footage of birds in flight for instance has a calming effect as well. Michael regales us with tales of animals, where he has filmed birds of paradise in New Guinea, Grizzly bears in Alaska, Termites in Namibia, Caribou migration, Polar Bears and more. He has spent many hours, up close and personal, feeling the heartbeat of a bird as it sits in his hand, feeling the strength of it, studying the intricacies of plumage which adapted to that way of life, their piercing eyes, incisive bills which continue to fascinate him: “every species is so special, they are all so different, so supremely adapted to where they live.” He has also seen so many changes, reduced habitats for farming birds for instance where prairie-style farming is destroying land and habitats. We can do more to improve the habitats of birds and animals, and the built environment, cities, towns and communities can do much to change how we build and design our communities. Biomimicry is one aspect of nature understanding that has a positive impact on our built environment, he mentions filming Termite mounds, huge, 12-15 feet high, made from mud, clay and sand. “They have incredible internal temperature control systems. It is +40 centigrade during the day, but to near freezing at night, but with a system of chambers and ducts, the termites maintain constant temperatures inside the mound to within 2 degrees.” This was for a study by Loughborough University which were using the knowledge garnered from the filming to use the design as an example for cooling systems in modern buildings. Nature provides us with so many answers, if we have eyes to see. Michael has a fascinating book out “Untangling the Knot, Belugas and Bears: My Natural World on Film” which you can buy directly from all good booksellers, and also directly through Michael, contact him via his website:http://michaelpottsphotography.comHe will also be at The Global Bird Fair in July 2023 https://globalbirdfair.orgDid you know our NEW printed and eBook journal is out now https://journalofbiophilicdesign.com/journal-of-biophilic-design-1 Please register for our newsletter https://mailchi.mp/4001fc945c4f/untitled-page and view previous podcasts with images here too: https://journalofbiophilicdesign.com/podcasts-journal-of-biophilic-design.Credits: with thanks to George Harvey Audio Production for the calming biophilic soundscape that backs all our podcasts. Um, I want to welcome you. A great new episode of covered wordsmith. Got Michael Potts with me today. He is actually a professor and has a PhD. So he's [00:01:00] probably one of my most prestigious guests that I've had on here. He's published some interesting things, including some horror poetry. So it's a great listen. We had a great chat about this. Um, and I'm sitting here. It's the first, really big snowy day of 2022 for me, uh, and, uh, joined the snow. Have a good podcast to listen to. So sit back and enjoy and words of wisdom for any of the writers out there. If you've come up with 27 new story ideas today, but you haven't finished the other 362, you might be a writer. So here's what. First of all. Tell me the names of your books. I don't think I had that in any of the emails. We haven't really started the interview. This is just a talking a little bit, so I know. And then we'll get started. [00:01:49] Michael: My first book was a poetry book that was won the Mary Bell Campbell awards from the North Carolina writers network. And it was from field. And that was [00:02:00] published. And 2006, it was really a nice addition. I don't have many of these left. I reprinted it with my own edition and published it myself later on when I read out of most of these, but it's mainstream poetry. And then my next book was in 2011. This was end of summer. It's a Southern fiction book published by WordPress press in Tullahoma, Tennessee. And unpardonable sin was 2014, I believe. Yeah. From word towards craft press. That is a horror, novel, love crafty and horror and obedience. Cool. Nice cover here is going to be made into a movie. Hopefully we can get the funding by a. Rule 14 pictures, which is associated with my publisher work graphs. And it's also a horror novel. Then I self published a hiding from the reefer [00:03:00] and other horror points as that was my first collection of horror poetry. It's hard to publish horror poetry. I would say a lot of well-known writers in horror poetry have to self publish. On that. And then my latest shoot this year, I have the death rattle and other dark tales, and I worked through breath to digital on that one. And that means it's an ebook only I sent you a copy, which you should receive [00:03:32] Stephen: and have to go look through the emails, but yeah, [00:03:35] Michael: that's fine. And that was my first anthology of short stories. Published and the nice thing about drafted digital, they let you name a press, any press. You can give it any name you want. So I just called mine heart's blood pressure and make it sound creepy. And then I also published another collection of dark poetry, not really [00:04:00] horror poetry, but mainstream dark poetry with a few horror points in there. And that's called Slipknot and other dark points. And that's my. That would be my literary books. I have an academic book that I edited called beyond brain death and came out in 2000, but,

Overview Michael has had experience with several different presses and talks about his experiences in this second part of episode 88. YouTube https://youtu.be/zKDHghS4thY Transcript Michael let's talk some author stuff. Now, some writing publishing before we get onto our discussion topic, what are some things you've learned through writing several books over a decade and getting them out and published that you're doing different now [00:01:00] than when you did at the beginning? [00:01:02] Michael: At the beginning, I really didn't have a process whereby I could, I didn't use an outline. Really I did. Eventually I've learned that you really have to outline a novel, at least for me, some people don't, some people just write what comes to mind, but I have to have some idea of the direction of the plot. And I would say over time, my outlines had become a little bit more detailed. One thing I have done in writing that I didn't do before is I would write out scenes like. On cards. All right. And you can write a screenplay that way, but you can also write a novel that way. In fact, obedience started as a screenplay and then I turned it into a novel. So that's one thing you can do it. It was a hard pass to turn it into a novel because you got to add in all [00:02:00] your details. And some people think it's easier to turn a novel into a screenplay, but I've found it easier to go the other direction. And it's going to vary from writer to writer, but you have to find what works for you. I focus a lot on the, on a lot more on looking at the plot and characterization in general, rather than just doing the line edits that I used to focus on so much as this working, is this not working and I do listen to people's advice. But one thing I would say to people in workshops, listen to the people's advice you think is best and ignore the others people. Oftentimes, oh God, I got to do this. Then I gotta do this. Oh, this person says this. And this person says that they're going to say contradictory thing. All right. Ultimately it is your novel, your, it is your work or your story. And the, you have to decide for yourself, what's going to work and what's not [00:03:00] going to work. Listen. Yes, take it seriously. If several people say the same thing, make use of it. But I'm not, uh, you know, I don't pay as much attention to it, so it worries me all the time. I agree. And I [00:03:15] Stephen: think people need to understand that the guy that writes nonfiction about military hardware is going to have different path and different advice than someone that writes cop thrillers. And that's going to be different than the lady who writes a romance. And so you need to think any. And I had this at a writers group where the there's a couple of guys that write suspense thriller, and there's one guy who's reading the opening couple of chapters of his book, and it was a horn story. And it wasn't till like clear into the third chapter or something that you realize. The main focus. Character is a ghost and you don't realize that at first something's wrong and something strange and it's a buildup and they were like telling them, oh no, you [00:04:00] can't do that. You need to put it like first chapter, we need this conflict. We need to know. And I'm like, no, not for her book. A horror book has to bill. I, if it's a suspense, okay. Here's the dead body. Let's go. But for a horror, it has to have that build to it, to get that feel. It's a totally different thing. So yeah, you got to sometimes think of the advice and how it applies to you and you're writing [00:04:24] Michael: and that's true. And I recently received some good advice on revising a screenplay. They told me you need to let it build more. You introduced too many things too early for a horror screenplays. So I'm going to have to work on that. So that's always good advice. [00:04:41] Stephen: Yeah, definitely. So when you're writing a,

This is the second of two episodes focusing on August Wilson’s play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and its recent film adaptation on Netflix. Today’s interview is with actor Michael Potts who starred in the Netflix film as Slow Drag, the bass player in Ma Rainey’s blues band. When I watched Michael Potts as Slow Drag, I saw something recognizable: the way his character can convey so much with a glance or a knowing look. It is the tendency to observe rather than jump into action. To see a situation from an intellectual distance. I went back to re-watch three roles from his TV work, all HBO series: True Detective, Show Me a Hero, and The Wire in which he played the notable character Brother Mouzone. The art of observation is apparent in each of these characters. As Michael says in the interview: “It’s part of my natural inclinations as a person, as Michael, to observe everything. I’m very aware of where I am in situations. I’m always checking the temperature of the room, which the actor training simply reinforced.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan put on their codpieces and fret over the innocence of teenage girls around David Bowie. Don't get us wrong, we love this movie, but why does this charming children's tale have a character named after the part of the anatomy responsible for transporting sperm? And why do so many sequences resemble sperm? And if all of these things are symbols for sperm, what does the Bog of Eternal Stench represent? We shudder to think… Labyrinth (1986) d. Jim Henson w.
