GIVE US A SMILE, 13min., USA Directed by Alessia Fionda A humorous retelling of the sitting of the Mona Lisa featuring the master himself, Leonardo da Vinci and his not so talented pupil, Alessio. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20850030/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk https://instagram.com/alessiafionda Get to know the filmmaker: I was motivated to make this film because the script I had written encompassed everything I love. Women's issues both past and present, art history and of course my favorite, comedy. The Mona Lisa is the most recognizable and discussed piece of art in existence, yet there is little to no information regarding the subject of the painting, Lisa del Giocondo. I wanted to add a colorful reinterpretation of what could have happened during the sitting. Also, I deeply wanted to play the character of Mona Lisa and challenge myself from an acting perspective. It's something we don't like to speak or think of happening in Canada – a country that prides itself on welcoming immigrants and embracing cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity and differences Yet, many minorities contend with racism and intolerance every day. Perhaps, you are one of those people. In Riceboy Sleeps, Korean/Canadian Actor, Filmmaker, Writer and Producer, Anthony Shim, addresses these very issues; unlike others who have recalled the trauma of immigrating to this country in their films. Winner of Best Original Screenplay at this year's Canadian Screen Awards, Riceboy Sleeps is a 2022 Canadian drama that Shim also edited and directed. Based in part on his own childhood, the film centers on So-Young (Choi Seung-yoon), a Korean immigrant single mother raising her teenage son Dong-Hyun (Ethan Hwang) after losing her husband and moving to Canada in the 1990's to give him a better life. In Canada, they fight for acceptance and respect. Dong-hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates at school, and he isn't helped by the timid, distinctly Canadian racism of his teacher and principal, who consider the family “troublesome.” At work, So-young battles loneliness and racist and sexist comments. As they negotiate with their separate circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows. Unwelcome news sparks an unplanned return to South Korea — and the in-laws So-young hasn't spoken to in many years — but might open the possibility of mutual understanding. Shim's deep engagement with his subjects sparks profound, affecting revelations. So-young's joyride in a convertible heartbreakingly underscores the emotional weight of dealing with life in a new country and raising a headstrong child alone. An offhand remark in class that ends in a fight shows how tightly wound and ill at ease Dong-hyun is — even as a teenager. Throughout the film, Shim expertly balances the very different perspectives of a boy and his mother, poignantly capturing his loneliness and frustration, her isolation, and sacrifices. It premiered in the Platform Prize program at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, and was named the winner of the program's award. It had its international premiere at the 27th Busan International Film Festival in October 2022. I met up with Shim on the red carpet at The 2023 Canadian Screen Awards to discuss the message he wants audiences to take away from this movie. He has completed many dangerous missions and of them while he was a bodyguard for a VIP in Ghana, Vincent visited a shelter where 20 children had just been rescued from slavery. He risks his life to save children around the world. Whether these children are orphans, refugees, or poverty-stricken, the goal is to protect and provide aid to help them survive. Vincent's work is making a life-saving difference by helping save children from slavery, trafficking and starvation. He has founded a nonprofit organisation called We Can Save Children whose mission is to rescue and recover children in Africa and the Middle East. A humbling conversation that sheds light on some of the extreme journeys that Vincent has taken and the life threats he has encountered by trying to help those less fortunate. Heroic yet highly dangerous work that enables others to lead their lives in safety and without fear. An inspirational encounter with someone who has dedicated their life for the higher good of others. For more information on Vincent Lyn visit https://www.wecansavechildren.org

Baseball legend Yogi Berra was not only a favorite of the author because of his great baseball skills and accomplishments but also for his unique sayings, commonly known as Yogi-isms. Some memorable Yogi-isms include: "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." "You can observe a lot by just watching.""No one goes there nowadays, it's too crowded." However, the most quoted Yogi-ism is "It's like déjà vu all over again," which the author believes applies to the current financial situation. While the author does not believe that the current economic crisis is a repeat of 2008, it does resemble the stagflation that affected the country from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, a period of high inflation, mortgage rates, and unemployment that lasted around 15 years. The author wishes that someone had advised them to buy gold in 1971 when they graduated from high school, as it has since increased from $44 to over $2,000 per ounce. The author hopes that viewers in their 20s and 30s will take their words to heart. He's written and directed 21 films, including “A Safe Place”, “Sitting Ducks”, “Tracks”, “Can She Bake a Cherry Pie,” and “Train to Zakopané.” He worked with Hollywood greats like Lee Grant, Maximillian Schell, Dennis Hopper, Roddy McDowell, Vanessa Redgrave, Faye Dunaway, David Duchovny. ***TRIGGER WARNING**** Sexual harassment, eating disorders, bullying, hazing First act actor Emily Nixon chats with me this week. Emily always wanted to be an actor and was able to make her dreams come true as today she's working as an actor, writer and director, with experience on screen with TV shows such as Umbrella Academy. Emily and I take a deep dive into what theatre school was like for her. She experienced harassment, bullying and a lot of hypercritical feedback from the teachers and saw many of her fellow students cut from the programme from one year to the next. We discuss the parallels between theatre school and medical school and whether theatre school is designed to prepare actors for the harsh rejections that are part of the industry. We then talk about the many benefits of doing background work and Emily tells me how she tries to appreciate every moment on set, regardless of whether she's on camera or working behind the scenes. At the end of the episode, she shares some really helpful advice that will give any aspiring actor a little bit of hope! If you found this episode with first act actor Emily insightful and inspiring, please share it with a friend or on your social media accounts to help others to discover the show. Corbin Allred may look familiar. He has enjoyed a successful acting career in film and television since the age of twelve and spent much of his youth and early adulthood in Hollywood, California pursuing the entertainment arts. Though his work in the entertainment industry has been his most public and noticeable contribution, he tries to balance that work with other endeavors including his passion for medicine and mental health. He has worked as a 911 paramedic, search and rescue team member, and he is currently a practicing emergency medicine PA in St. George, Utah and the medical department coordinator for an adolescent psychiatric treatment center. He also has spent decades speaking to tens of thousands of youth throughout the country on mental health topics. Through his extensive work in healthcare and speaking, Corbin has identified one of the most critical issues plaguing our time - that of the mental and emotional health epidemic threatening the minds and hearts of young people. Corbin is now writing, directing, and producing film and media projects specifically for the purpose of bringing attention to this crisis. He hopes that, through powerful stories of health, healing, and the miracles we can perform in other peoples lives, his audiences will feel something and be motivated individually and collectively to change for the better so that tragedies of the heart and mind can be prevented for all of us. Experiences change us. Corbin believes that there is not a more powerful medium through which to communicate than that of storytelling. It is the only way one person's story can become every person's experience. In addition to his work in film, Corbin is preparing to self publish his first children's book, “A Time to Play”. Corbin hopes that through his life experiences, education, expertise, and storytelling he can influence others for good. He strives to live by the acronym - L.I.F.T. He wants everything he does in this world to help others feel Loved, Inspired, Fulfilled, or Taught.
